Does the BBC only have so many actors to go around or something?

Companion spoiler for the next series.

In work we have a replay service for popular new episodes of stuff. Checked: last Saturday, 2nd place under Eastenders.

Whohoo!.

For God's sake, don't look at Outpost Gallifrey if you want to avoid the new companion spoiler. It's right there at the f***ing top of the FRONT page with a picture and everything. Even the BBC News site has the nous to keep it a click away. Gah!

I can't believe that they're using that person for the new companion. There is absolutely no need to recycle actors in that way, it's sloppy and shoddy. Why couldn't they have had someone else play the part that person played in this series? It's not like it was a major character or anything ... for Christ's sake.

I confidently predict a massive popularity slump for the next series.

Also, although it may be too late, avoid Metro.

Anyone know what the actual ratings are for this series, and how they compare? I've got a vague feeling that it seems more populist without feeling more popular...

I confidently predict a massive popularity slump for the next series.

On what basis? (Let's take this to the spoilers thread, which I've just revived.)

Whisky Priestess
09:34 / 05.07.06
On the basis that the new companion looks shit.

Why don't we take further discussion of next season to the spoilers thread, Whisky, wherein you can detail exactly what looks shit and in what way...

Others seeking to avoid spoilers may not want to run their cursors over the link above, as it contains the name of the new companion.

Also, although it may be too late, avoid Metro.

How about avoiding the BBC news this morning too? I switched on the telly this morning only to have that gurning twat of a newsreader (Bill, I do believe) spoiling it with a big photo and everything. I didn't even know there would be a new companion, I'm gutted. Why couldn't they wait until next monday to start with that kind of news?

On the other hand, can I just say how lovely it was to see the wonderful Sophie Aldred again... it's hard to believe that it's almost twenty years since she was the current companion...

In answer to Haus' question, average ratings are up this year over the previous series - even with the later transmission into summer.

For the trainspotters:

Series 1 full-year average: 7.95
Series 2 average to date: 8.12

Here's the final ratings breakdown on a comparison basis per episode; it looks like Series 2 is being propped up by some heavy hitters but underperforming on a general episode-to-episode basis:

Series 1/Series 2 (in millions)

1: 10.81/8.62
2: 7.97/9.24
3: 8.86/8.31
4: 7.63/7.9
5: 7.98/9.22
6: 8.63/7.63
7: 8.01/6.76
8: 8.06/6.32
9: 7.11/6.08
10: 6.86/6.66
11: 7.69/6.6*
12: 6.81/7.66*
13: 6.91/

Interesting! Where'd you get the figures (if it's not a secret)?

Could you add the Series 1 and 2 ep names to the figures though, so that we know which ones got the best audiences?

Thanks, who cares - I had a funny feeling that may have been the case. I recently read a blog which said that he was unsure that Doctor Who would survive Russell T Davies, apparently forgetting that it hadn't been doing great before he turned up...

Final rating sfor Fear Her just came in at 7.14m ... we can probably expect a similar jump when the finals come in for Army of Ghosts.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

Given the upswing in tabloid spoilers and "you much watch THIS!!!"-ness, I'd guess so. An awful lot of people will be watching this week.

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
16:12 / 06.07.06
It's actually quite interesting looking at that list anyway, without thinking about ratings- the two seasons have been structured entirely differently. Dalek/The Age Of Steel both push similar buttons, as do The Long Game/The Idiot's Lantern, but other than that there aren't really many parallels, apart from the big two-part finish, which I guess is gonna become standard.

DID THEY JUST SHOW A FUCKING SPOILER 45 SECONDS BEFORE THE FUCKING SHOW IS ON ON THE FUCKING CHANNEL I'M ALREADY FUCKING WATCHING?

I believe they fucking did.

OK, sorry, I'll keep quiet until the end of the episode.

Did Catherine Tate have her own Tardis? The Bride? Is that like... and... oh... HER?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
17:51 / 08.07.06
Sorry, the emotional element of this episode didn't really grab me (Doctor/Rose that is, everything else, Jackie/Pete was wonderful, Pete zapping back to save Rose (though how did he know?) was wonderful) but the rest of the episode was fun. I loved the idea of the genesis arc (it's the Dalek's name for it, not the Time Lords) and I'm glad these Daleks weren't ones that escaped Rose Bad Wolfing them last series.

I felt it started going a bit crazy when it was zillions of Cybermen versus zillions of Daleks but it was good fun otherwise. Would have liked a bit more explanation of the Zone Ship the Daleks came in, but I suppose that might be for another day.

But Catherine Tate at Christmas? Oh crapsticks...

OK, I completely lost track of what was going on about halfway through, but I did cry at the end.

Well, near the end.

What was with the fucking END?

doozy floop
17:55 / 08.07.06
Oh, the emotional element got me, but I'm a soft touch who cried at the end of Cool Runnings as opposed to a... what's the word? Who-er? Whooligan? You know, big fan of the whole mythology and stuff. I wept real drunk little tears. And now I have to put spoons on my eyes or whatever the elegant people do when they need to appear in public but they're looking a bit weepy.

Umm... who's Catherine Tate? Other than the girl at the end, I kind of got that, but... I've never seen her before in my life. A friend of mine just phoned me to say she wasn't happy about that either, and I had to confess I have no idea who she is.

Stoatie - Catherine Tate is a comedien who has her own sketch show entitled 'The Catherine Tate show' - she started off with Alistair McGowen but has struck out on her own and is doing quite a bit better than him if 'Mayo' is anything to go by...

She's the "bovvered" comedian lady.
