I prefer Ka Faraq Gatri, the Bringer of Darkness... (for the McCoy fans out there) that'll at least get you a packet of twiglets.

Are you Russel T Davies?

17:50 / 27.06.06
I'm afraid I can't answer that question except by filming a 90 second trailer in which people mention the fact that I am Russell T Davies approximately fifteen times, thus removing any sense of drama from the big reveal next week.

Or, if you boringly want the truth, no. To his credit, RTD has never tried to rewrite the history of new season Who in order to unify its continuity to Babylon 5 by having the Timelords and Daleks perish in a 'timequake' which actually leads to them transcending physical form and being reincarnated in a new parallel universe as the Vorlons and Shadows. Thankfully.

Exceeeeeeept RTD would turn it into Buffy.

Damn. So, after watching seemingly countless reruns of the trailer for the two-parter, I'm pretty sure it's the Doctor blasting Cybermen with a Dalek weapon. Either that, or he's turned to plumbing as a more secure source of income.
Be interesting to see if they have any more little tributes secreted away in the background - Love and Monsters had both LINDA (from RTD's early kids' show Why Don't You?) and a possible reference to Peter Pan (Elton finds him in his house looking for a shadow; an ageless figure reappearing throughout his life and Rose as Tinkerbell - ok, so it falls down after a couple of minutes, but...)

So presumably they'll just say that there was more than one Dalek crashlanding to Earth as I don't remember anytime in TOS when present-day humans could get their hands on Dalek tech, it's going to be a little bit intellectually squidgy about how Torchwood could decipher and use Dalek tech without Van Statten finding out about it a few years from now. Anyway, let's wait and see...

Fucking hell! Fucking, fucking hell!

One tiny complaint, the ghosts didn't move like Cybermen, but otherwise, woohoo!

So, Daleks versus Cybermen or Cybermen and Daleks versus the Earth?

One protozoon. Two protozoa. You'd think a scientist would know that. Hmm.

Otherwise, brilliant first half!

Great intro from Rose. Jackie, as ever, outstanding. Kissing and hugging the Doctor one minute, questioning how his friendship is changing Rose and what it demands of her nthe next.

Peggy Mitchell abusing the "ghost" of Den Watts.

Who you gonna call: Ghost Doctor!

My mum's still on board.

My people called it The Void. The Eternals called it The Howling. But some people call it Hell.

Yay, Mickey! Lookin good, dude, but a bit offhand with poor Rose. My name's Mickey Smith and I'm saving the world Great menace from the Cybermen and then DALEKS! Eccellente, Ambassador!

Oh yes!

Great Big Hair Action from Torchwood Woman - although it started flattening when the cybermen arrived.

One tiny complaint, the ghosts didn't move like Cybermen, but otherwise, woohoo!

Perhaps they move like they used to.

Excellent episode. Loved spy Rose and then "all Torchwood operatives have had Level 1 Psychic Training".

Who ya gonna call?!

Office slacking the downfall of the world? Nahh... Thing is, did the first bloke have two controlly-earpieces when he tried to lure the woman in? Bit lucky for Dr. Cyberman, Neurosurgeon! if he didn't.

Mickey giving the silent thumbs up. So best.

I'm glad that Torchwood and Hartman aren't absolutely evil, it's a RTD script but he's got the lightness of touch he wasn't displaying at the start of the season.

I'm wondering about that Rose voice-over. It's the type of device not used on telly but common in comics, the voice-over that isn't exactly the blow-by-blow but a sort of 'looking back afterwards'.

I'm really fascinated about how the script is going to stop the new ultra-lethal Daleks from shooting Rose and Mickey straight away, maybe they'll worry that she's going to Bad Wolf them again.

Doctor Who Confidential big-upping the Torchwood series...

It looks mighty tasty.

Damnably good episode. Torchwood as secret conspiracy to re-empower Britain rules (OMFG!1 TEH EMPIRE NVR DIED! 11! 23!!).

The Micky reveal had me cheering. Liked his little pop at the Doctor.

Void ships, the only possible way to escape from TimePhoenix Rose. Me like.

Me not wanna wait another week.

To war! We go to war!

Peggy Mitchell abusing the "ghost" of Den Watts.

I got a little scratchy about that being an in-joke. Denn Watts' ghost appearing in an episode starring the actress who killed him. Plus, extra Eastenders flavour in the form of Raj, played by another departed star of said soap. But I've been scratchy about a lot of things again lately.

And now I depart this thread as I no longer trust Barbelith not to fuck next week's closing ep up for me. It's been an experience.

That was mightily satisfying. It was similar in tone to last season's opening part of the finalé: light hearted and breezy at first, before the shit hits the fan and everybody is screaming about void ships and being exterminated by Daleks with a black matt finish.

The music was a little too loud, but I'll forgive it because of the return of some of Gold's best compositions and the introduction of one or two excellent new pieces.

I wonder how they'll get out of this. I hope we don't get a retread of Bad Wolf Rose, this time destroying the cybermen, Daleks and sealing that rift. Heh. Maybe we'll have Jack emerging from the void sphere next, crotch mounted Dalek gun thrusting forward.

Lots of questions about Torchwood - particularly on a funding front.

If they really are the well-funded British Empire protection society, how come the sun set on the Empire at all?

Because they couldn't fight Mahatma Gandhi with stolen Dalek weaponry.

Our Lady Has Left the Building

Because they were shit and poorly financed for ages? The fanwank explanation could be that in the early 90s there was a power struggle between UNIT and Torchwood, the red-headed stepchild of alien response. And Torchwood achieved primacy. Or that Torchwood grew out of what was left of UK-UNIT after the Slitheen's attack last year.

I loved Derek Acorah questioning what he could do any more.

I really wonder whether they have what it takes to kill Rose. She is the viewers friend on the journeys of the Doctor. Kill her and they reisk alienating the new fans. On the other hand, the use of language in this is very tricksy if they try to go for 'when I said I died I meant it was my heart, or my life as a companion of the Doctor'.

And as the Doctor seemed to know enough about the orb to know the Cybermen didn't make it presumably that means the Daleks didn't make it either, so where did they get it from. I'm thinking Satan is involved in someway, though it's puzzling with the Doctor insisting a few weeks ago that it couldn't come from before time yet this week describing entire universes as though they were seperate islands in the big stream of existence.

And yes, big geek joy for the Eternals ref.

I'm now thinking of laying money on my Rose speculation.

My people called it The Void. The Eternals called it The Howling. But some people call it Hell.

And Warren Ellis called it The Bleed... top episode, but does no-one else feel as if Uncle Russell and his merry team may have been reading from the Wildstorm back catalogue during breaks?

Voidship = Snowflake

Torchwood = The Four (esp. with the hording of stolen alien tech) / The Establishment

The Doctor = Elijah Snow

OMG SUPERFICIAL SIMILARITIES!!!32!!

Fuck me. Daleks v. Cybermen? Have we even had that in Who before? They were both in the Five Doctors, sure, but this looks like all RTD's most lurid fantasies made (synthetic) flesh.

Nice homage to Tomb of The Cybermen too:

Lovely shot of a random alien planet as well. Looking forward to the next part an idiotic amount.

Apropos of nothing...

I actually had a theory a long time ago that the Daleks WERE the Vorlon. And also the Invid from Robotech. (And possibly the Zoanoids from Guyver).

But then again, I was very young. And very silly.

Or maybe they just read the same books Ellis read when he was a kid?

And I told myself that I was going to resist reading this thread in regards to this season's ending, but my two reliable downloading sources were served with a cease-and-desist order....

I knew the Cybermen and Daleks and Mickey were all making appearances again...but what about the third "supposed" villain?

PM if you know what I'm thinking of as I do not wish to incur the wrath of Haus again.

I'm wondering if Rose is safe but they kill off Mickey and Jackie and that makes Rose leave the Doctor.

OK so! I was just advancing a lazy and ill-formed analogy... let's face it, it's all I do on this forum. Check my Evangelion-related bollocks on the Battlestar Galactica thread for corroborating evidence.

My girlfriend has imposed a moratorium on spoilers for next week of any kind (she wouldn't even watch the post-credits teaser last night), so like Dupre X, I'm out of here. See you later.

Yes, for a moment I did wonder whether Hawksmoor would jump out of the sphere and the season would end in a sexy party. An orgy.
