Annihilation is going on at the same time I suppose, although Silver Surfer made another appearance in Hulk as a captive gladiator.
But I was thinking the deal with the Annihilation was that the Negative Zone had been shrinking and disintegrating until there was nothing left, forcing Annihilus and his crew into our dimension. I could be confusing it with the Ultimate version of Annihilus.
But I'd love to see Annihilation and Civil War brought together somehow, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Isn't Annihilation intolerably shit? The Silver Surfer ish I read deffo was - just the worst dialogue known to man.

Diz, I know what you're saying but it didn't implicate our heroes quite so directly.

Have you guy's seen this?
Thunderbolts, Warren Ellis, Bullseye and Venom?

To answer both your questions, yes. Ellis seems like the perfect guy for Thunderbolts; his Authority and even even Nextwave teams have always been on the edge between superheroism and supervillany, which is exactly where Thunderbolts should be. The new Civil War lineup (Bullseye, Lady Deathstrike, Taskmaster ((yay!)) etc.) is a lot better than the current no-name crew.

Unfortunately, the lineup as of the first issue is more like New Masters Of Evil:

Songbird, Swordsman, Moonstone, Radioactive Man, Venom, Bullseye, Green Goblin, and a new character called Penance (despite the fact that the former Penance is getting airtime in another series).

The premise is that these Thunderbolts (led by Norman Osborn) are tasked with hunting down unregistered superhumans. They are also described as "celebrities", which doesn't fill me with glee.

(There have been a lot of Suicide Squad comparisons made online, which is only slightly apt, even if they keep the whole "nanites in your brain will kill you if you get out of line".)

The biggest questions appear to be "who is Penance?" (my leading candidates are Tony Stark and Robbie Baldwin) and "Which character will be the sarcastic, alcoholic cigarette smoker?"

Wow, it's exactly like the New Avengers, except not.
Penance = Ronin.

This Venom in the new T-Bolts... is it The Scorpion, or is it Eddie Brock? I'm so confused with the symbiote history nowadays.

I think it's absolutely no coincidence that Marvel should release a villain book in the wake of DC's successful villain efforts.

The books may not be precisely comparable but their parallel publishing isn't any kind of fluke.

Mario

The latest host of the symbiote is still Mac Gargan. However, it would not surprise me if Brock gets it back at some point.

Well, Spidey is set to wear a black suit after CIVIL WAR is over, just in time for the movie. I'm willing to bet that the suit exhausts Gargan and goes back to Peter Parker again.
They'll definitely keep Brock alive long enough to wear the suit again.

I'm willing to bet that the suit isn't symbiotic.

We'll see.

Brock's already dead, isn't he? Slashed his wrists in the last bit of the Venom arc in Millar's Spider-Man.

It wasn't confirmed though, I believe they just left it with him in a puddle of blood. But he was also dying of cancer I believe.

My money's on Scorpian.

Brock had a form of cancer that increased his adrenaline. the suit fed from the adrenaline. The only two hosts it ever found that could sustain it without being exhausted were Brock and Spidey. Eventually Brock's body started dying and not feeding it enough adrenaline.
I see a good chance of his adrenaline surging again and the suit being the only thing that saves him from the cancer. or maybe they'll just retcon it again, as they have so many times before.

We got a shadowed glimpse at our secret manipulator making a deal with Norman Osborne.

Any guesses as to his identity?

Um, so which side is Mr Castle on?

I seem to remember Quesada saying something about his arrival being powerful and important. It's worth noting, then, that the alternative cover for ish 5 has the Punisher and Spidey on it. Contrast that with the other cover that has Spidey legging it away from what looks like the new Thunderbolts and I reckon Frank intervenes to protect Peter.

I don't see an out of the frying pan and into the Punisher's-line-of-fire moment matching Q's description.

I was thinking it might be Namor, and that he sent Osborne to cleanup the Atlantean spy cell before SHIELD found them.

I feel kind of certain that it's a member of the Illuminati.

Looks like he's wearing a suit...grey with a blue shirt. 'Tis the uniform of a Republican. (but hey if he's pro-reg, he must be! oh!). Probably a red tie to boot and khakis.

But the over-inked shadow on his upper lip looks to be hiding a mustachioed traitor.

Tony? Or his he rocking the van-dyke? Traitor X isn't sporting any hair on his chiny-chin-chin. Can someone look for a picture of Tony Stark for me. I'm...too drunk.

Could this mystery man also be the secret manipulator behind that big prison break, the one that lead to the formation of the New Avengers? That particular plot has yet to be resolved...

I like the idea that one of the Illuminatti is behind it all, one of the "good guys", like Namor or Black Bolt. It's probably just a villain though, like Loki or Hate Monger or Tony Stark's evil teenage clone from an alternate future timeline or something.

Better yet, Osborne is nuts so maybe it's his son Harry and he's having a Fight Club moment. Any other theories?

I'd totally forgotten that we never found out who paid off Electro and allowed the villains to break free of the Raft. I definitely hope that factors into things. Back then, I was assuming Loki (being the one who kickstarted the last Avengers series), but now...
And did this person work with Damage Control to engineer the Stamford Incident as a false flag? You know, Tony Stark used to own Damage Control? And coincidentally, Speedball was an employee.

So, Marvels' 'Civil War' is pretty much crap. A pretty good idea done badly. But it does leave the Marvel Universe split down the middle. At odds with itself. Iron Man doesn't really hate Captain America. We all know that. So at some point they have to make up. And, as we all know since Watchmen, the way for two conflicting sides to make up is by getting together and facing a larger threat...

So to my theory...(and apologies to anyone who might have said the same stuff up thread...might of missed it..may be in Wizard for all i know...i'm just chuffed at the moment cos i just thought of it and i'm having a fanboy moment...)

So, it seems like the best Marvel comic to read at the moment is the Hulk (or maybe X-factor). Planet Hulk is great. Hulk is building an army and he's going to kick some alien arse very soon. Really, he'll smash his way through that planet, and quite right too as it's run by a bunch of twats. But when he's finished he'll want to stomp some more. Plus he has an alien army behind him. Do you see where i'm getting at? Plus the story tag line for a few months time is World War Hulk! Yes!

Even if it's right or wrong can we please get behind the idea of the Hulk returning to earth with an army. Starting World War Hulk. And kicking holy fuck out of every superhero who has ever lived. Really, they have let themselves down in a very, ok maybe quite touching in some respects way, but they have fucked up big time. But what it boils down to is that they have let us down and as such they deserve to be fucked over big time by the Hulk. And his army.

armed with madness: Iron Man doesn't really hate Captain America. We all know that. So at some point they have to make up. And, as we all know since Watchmen, the way for two conflicting sides to make up is by getting together and facing a larger threat...

Actually, can we have a sexy ending instead? A sexy marriage of opposites where they realize they aren't even opposite, they're just written that way?

Or, you know, Noh-Varr can start up his New Kree Empire BUT GOOD.

Though, if I'm to be honest, the best way I can imagine Civil War ending is if twelve-year-old Molly Hayes walks up to Iron Man and Captain America and starts going off about how stupid everybody's being, really, grown-ups are stupid, and Cap & Tony can start giggling about that time that Little Molly beat the crap out of Wolverine and then they start laughing and of course Reed won't get what the joke is.

Heads up, pampered punks, CW5 is out today. Preview images here

Is it just me, or are Johnny 'n' Sue the new Wanda and Pietro? Certainly looks that way from McNiven's heads-thrown-back-in-incestuous-ecstasy art. Maybe 'keeping it in the family' is Millar's new anal rape...

Annhilation (which I'm actually really digging... Keith Griffen is doing good Marvel Cosmic which is something that hasn't been seen in a long time) does take place at least in part, during Civil War. The reports of the Civil War on earth are one of the things things that propel Nova and crew into making their last ditch attack on Annhilius -- knowing that the divided house of the earth heroes would not survive the Annhilation Wave.

Keith gives good Thanos... the character evolution of Nova is nice and the redesigned Riddick-style Drax the Destroyer is fun. As is the return of the man who used to be Starlord.

*some spoilers*

As to the return of the Punisher to the mainstream MU? Well, it succeeded in getting a "yeah" from me which is the only emotion the Punisher has evoked in me except for his "hell yeah" appearence in Daredevil. Miller does a good job of portraying him as a hardcore SOB without descending into Ennis-style parody. Also interesting is the comparison between the anti-reg heroes and the Punisher... what makes them any different at this point (other than the Punisher's body count)?

Of course my biggest gripe with this book is this: Peter's already registered and exposed... WTF did he do that was illegal?!?!

Oh, and any ideas on who might be in the Iron Man suit after CW is over?

That whole piece of dialog was completely, completely unnecessary. Millar only has twenty-three or so pages over seven issues to tell teh BIGGEST STORY IN MARVEL COMICS EVER and he's squandering them on that? Decompress all you want, but a scene of two people going into a door and talking about how uncomfortable they are posing as a married couple (not hinting at incest in any way imho, since we know Marvel won't explore that or even have it strongly hinted at) is just sloppy writing right when we don't need it.
And speaking of sloppy writing (and *SPOILERS*):

"Who do you figure's been running around in a ski mask and covering your backs these past few weeks?" Okay, I know they needed to resolve that whole 'who's in the mask' thing, and Big Pun's a good a fit as any, but a) we haven't seen Punny-bunch actually doing any back-covering b) we've had no indication that the Secret Avengers have seen somebody in a ski-mask following them around.
And that 'thirty pieces of silver' bit at the end, jeeee-zuss, why didn't Daredevil say 'Moronsayswhat?' or ask Stark to pull his finger? That non-incest page and the two page spread could have easily been removed to allow Tony to laugh his ass off at Daredevil's weak snaps.
