My prediction:
All the characters we see above will survive and keep on doing the same stuff, they did the last 40 years. Some mutant will die and Spider-Man will get a new custome.

Mario
18:10 / 27.12.05
The new costume thing is happening in the Other.

Personally, I just don't care. Absolutely nothing coming out from Marvel in the next few months is enticing me in the least. (I should add, in the interest of fairness, that DC isn't doing much better).

Turn Spider-Man into a soul vampire? Depower a bunch of mutants? Turn the major heroes of the Marvel U into a bunch of paranoid conspirators?

*yawn*

Wake me when there is teh joycore.

WhoaWhoaWhoa dude. Paranoid Conspirators rock. Let's not say things we can't take back...

Depower a bunch of mutants?

IMHO, that's not so boring. Here's a hypothetical - Peter David, a writer who knows a character, takes a depowered mutant and sketches out the psychology of losing one's everything. That'd be interesting. Apparently the Son of M, about Quicksilver, isn't that bad. Maybe.

Mario
11:55 / 31.12.05
The thing is, you only need to depower ONE mutant to tell that story (see Uncanny #185-227). You don't need to make it an EVENT[TM].

Furthermore, it's rather annoying that the odds make it so that almost all the reoccurring cast of the X-books dodged the bullet. Not surprising, but annoying.

Ah, good point.

Matthew Fluxington
13:28 / 31.12.05
Yeah, Decimation wasn't a very good idea, but Peter Milligan and Peter David are using the premise very nicely, so it's not such a bad thing in the short term. It's also sparked something in Claremont, who is doing better lately.

Matthew Fluxington
13:41 / 31.12.05
It seems like it's a strong possibility that the loophole allowing the overwhelming majority of the X-Men to make it out with powers was something that the Scarlet Witch did on purpose or unconciously. We're being led to believe that Lorna lost her powers for her relation to Magneto, so that explains her lot.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
14:09 / 31.12.05
They're definitely implying that, Flux, but it doesn't really take the sting out of its lameness. It's like watching an off-off-off broadway play with four main characters and no set and while they're all healthy you're supposed to derive all the drama from the fact that "outside" everyone is dead and these four are the only ones left.

A clumsily transcripted analogy, to be sure, but you see what I'm getting at?

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

And yeah, that last ish of Uncanny actually wasn't bad. Pretty vicious stuff for those who know their X-History. And, of course, I'd follow Bachalo into the depths of hell. My copies of Age of Apocalypse II prove that, in actuality, I already have.

Mario
15:37 / 31.12.05
In any case, as this isn't the Decimation thread...

My biggest problem with CIVIL WAR is that it's so contrived. The only way it works is to crowbar this "Illuminati" council into Marvel history, which makes little sense. It begs the question of "Where was this council during EVERY major crossover?" I can think of a handful of stories that would be comepletely different if folks like Professor X and Reed Richards were in cahoots behind the scenes.

As I've said before, I liked it better when they merely met for poker once a month. =)

I'm aware I might be missing a crucial piece of information, but I have to ask why? The high concept, as I've heard it sketched, would require nothing of the sort.

Mario
20:25 / 31.12.05
Because in order for it to be a Civil War, both sides must be organized. Otherwise, it's a bunch of independent heroes reacting individually.

Isn't the point that when it's revealed that there's been this Illuminati running things for years, and there's a schism within it, the various heroes have to pick sides (probably Mutants vs. Superheroes).
But yeah, it still feels like it's been crowbarred in. The Marvel stories up to this point haven't needed there to be a secret club running things, and it definitely wasn't hinted at, whereas D.C's Crisis had been on the cards at least since Identity Crisis, and definitely since Luthor, all hopped up on drugs, said there'd be one. Marvel's lagging behind on 'tEh MEGA-EVENT' stuff, and my worry is that this Civil-Crisis-War-Saga is going to trample on some of the good series that've come out of House of M, particularly X-Factor.

I think that'll be a contributing factor, but far from the point. Hell, most of the pre-Civil War press seems to be pointing at House of M, Planet Hulk, Secret War and Enemy of the State as the big issues.

I mean, hell... look at how the chess game between whomever is running both SHIELD and Hydra vs Nick Fury is cracking open over in the Bendis books.

I think that if you are right, then it'll be lame, but I also think it'll be a good deal more involved in that.

And for that matter, how many uber-crossovers haven't involved most of the "Illuminati" members putting their heads together to fix things? I think that's why it's a cute concept, actually -- the Illuminati have existed for ages in the MU, Bendis is just fleshing it out.

all I know is that I laughed out loud when this month's Wizard ran a mockup of the rumored SuperHero Registration Act for the MU - which included the question "Raised by your parents, or cow-woman?" and asked heroes if they appeared in "that terrible Super Bowl commercial" (the first joke is the one that made me laugh; the second evoked only a smike at the memory of that commercial)

Also, Millar has said he wants this to be his "Secret War" or "Crisis on Infinite Earths" - I'm optimstic enough and aware of enough of Millar's fanboy tendencies to want it to be really good and have a similar sensibility to those 80s classic crossovers (not that Secret War was brilliant but it was fun, and I read it when I was a teen so it seemed all the much cooler for that). Time will tell on this one.

Bendis took his shot a huge Marvel crossover story with House of M, now let's see how Millar does.

Mario

I guess I'm just EVENT[TM}'ed out. I could probably accept the idea of Civil War, if it was the only major crossover going on. But Civil War AND Decimation AND Planet Hulk AND Annihilation...

It's just too much.

Mario you still haven't written anything that doesn't look like a raft of assumption.

I'm really trying not to be a prick but you're making it hard. For the record I'm genuinely interested in what you have to say.

The Illuminati have been appearing in Daredevil occassionally ever since Matt was outed, haven't they?

It does make sense in looking back why, say, Dr Strange would give a shit about Matt's identity being revealed publicly, and also Reed Richards. I suppose they dragged Cap and Spidey along with them so it wouldn't look too sus.

Here I gibber on about some other possible Civil War links. Seeing how Wolverine is suppossedly a big part of this, I'll be shocked/disappointed if they don't use Weapon Plus.

If Bendis is good enough, the Illuminati one-shot could link everything up in retrospect, showing how everything joins together. Don't know if he'll do that though.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm trying to say myself. *grin*

I guess it's just my usual knee-jerk reaction to the idea that almost no character in the Marvel Universe seems allowed to actually have a good time.

I keep bringing up the poker games, and there's a good reason for it. Poker games are FUN. Meetings (especially ones with agendas) usually aren't, and "civil wars" DEFINITELY aren't. Once upon a time, the Marvel Universe seemed like it would be a fun place to visit. I don't think that's true, anymore.

They've run out of super-villains to fight, so now they FIGHT EACH OTHER!!!

Hopefully by the time this is done, people will respect Speedball, as he takes down all of the other heroes and becomes the herald of Galactus.

In the Avengers issue they question Iron Man about his new Avengers, with Namor being a huge dick about it (Namor's always coolest when he's being a dick though), and they also mention to Iron Man that they had previously discussed putting a superhero team out in Chicago or L.A., like they were Superhero team managers or something.

I can't help but notice that Cap is simultaneously highlighting and hiding his crotch. It's like a Super-Soldier fan dance.
