The better side of Victor does only tend to come to the front when whatever group he's talking with is made up of more than just het male company. It's entirely possible that he's just uncomfortable in those groups, though
I get the impression that, in an odd way, the fact that he's irritatingly all mouth and no trousers (ie. in one-to-ones with Jason or directly to Big Brother, comes out with the whole baby's arm/pleasin' da ladeeez/gameplan puppeteer crap - but we see absolutely no evidence of any of this elsewhere) is Victor's saving grace. Jason's problem (or one of Jason's problems) is that he not only buys into the same crap, but tries to enact it.
I suspect Spambo also partly defines himself by who dislikes him (seem to recall a comment, a few weeks ago, about how he quite enjoyed having people dislike him, and knowing he disliked them) in a way Victor doesn't.
Jason ticks most of the boxes for (d)evolving into a classical Scottish hardman: background that's felt to be lacking in emotional closeness (adopted); sexual ambiguity with subsequent clumsy-bordering-on-assault attempts at stereotypically hetero relationships; disinterest-verging-on-anger toward women (particularly those who reject him); preference for (often pantomime) masculine company; sensitivity to perceived slights to authority/heterosexuality; tragically low self-definition/esteem.
Victor, having been brought up in a mainly female household (as he's always reminding us) doesn't seem quite as desperate in his performance of masculinity, overblown and stereotypical as it might appear. I can't help wondering whether he'd act the same if there were other black people in the house who might conceivably call him on his inauthenticity.
Re: the wankers comment. I'd read it on the site first, and come to the same conclusion as you, but hearing him actually say it on the round-up show gave it a slightly different slant. Because Jason had been saying how everyone else in the house acted like kids, blah, blah, and Victor's comment to Vanessa seemed to follow directly on from that.
Hmm, okay, although the fact that Vanessa seemed to be using "guys" to mean men, specifically - and the "don't tar all guys with the same brush" comment appears related to that. I haven't seen the live feed, though, so if the site conflated two distinct uses of "guys", then your alternative reading is a valid one. |
