And I suppose if it's the pee-pee/bot-bot thing that makes one squeamish, then a born-male individual acquiring a penetrable vagina may be a more comfortable, 'cleaner' concept than a born-male individual choosing to have his 'dirty' bot-bot penetrated by a man's pee-pee.

I can picture White Van Men across the country...

Well this is the thing, I'm not sure if I can, personally. In all kinds of ways she was a fairly " safe " character, firmly in the tradition of UK camp, someone you could picture in a revamped version of Are You Being Served just as easily as, say, hosting a club night in Vauxhall. And there's nothing wrong with that either, up to her what she does, but the British tabloids are nothing if not extremely focused on being " in tune " with their readers - Kelvin MacKenzie always prided himself on that for example ( and if I mispelt his name there, fuck him to be honest, I'm not going to check ) so if they'd genuinely felt there was something to be gained from putting the boot into Nadia in terms of selling copies and appealing to their audience, I'm sure they wouldn't have thought twice.

I think where Nadia differs from the camp tradition (and someone previously alluded to Larry Grayson) is in her transparency. She's not oo-er hinting at Otherness; she's entirely up-front about her past, her surgery, her desire to meet a (straight) man, fall in love, etc., etc. There's no knowing (half-)concealment. I agree that she's relatively 'safe' compared to spikier housemates (Kitten comes to mind), but I think that probably derives from the public's apparent acceptance of her as a sort of uber'feminine' woman of the So Graham Norton variety - which is close to 'camp', but doesn't seem (to me) to quite fit the label.

Can I ask a totally clueless question here -- I get the impression that the BBC version of Big Brother is the one everyone goes crazy over. What, if anything, does the BBC version have to do with the apparently-crappy CBS version in the USA done a few years back? Is CBS still doing "their" Big Brother?

Spaniel

BB is on Channel 4 in the UK.

Does the UK BB have anything to do with CBS's BB? Can people in the USA watch the UK BB? (damn all these initials)

I don't know, FinderWolf. Can they? You're in the USA, aren't you? You tell us. We can't tell you that, we can only tell you whether people can watch the US version in the UK. Which they can, on cable or digital. And yes, it's not as good. They all talk about their 'gameplan' openly and openly vote tactically, which sounds exciting until you realise it means you don't get the same sense of watching a group of people build more personal friendships and emnities...

My problem with the US version is the amount of sanitisation. The show flicks to the presenter all the time and she's very serious, treats it like a news item, like it's so terribly intense that someone is being voted out. This isn't Pop Idol though. One of the things that makes Big Brother for me in the UK is how friendly and normal and quirky everyone tries to be. Dermot and co. never look stern or uptight, sometimes I feel like I'm watching CBBC or Going Live.

All righty, future predictions for members of tha house, in six months time:

My best guess:

Kitten: Still politically active, occasional column in The Sunday Sport. Potentially in trouble on Channel 4 News because someone she knows, right, didn't mean to set fire to that house, but the bloke next door is a f***ing vivisectionist, so, y'know ?

Victor: Keeping it real. Two or three bouncers around him at all times, because there are playa haters back in his hood, who are jealous of what he's achieved, by being himself. Nervous breakdown in the post, as and when the shine comes off.

Emma: Will go back to doing what she used to do mainly, except for more cash, for a bit.

Becki: As above.

Stuart: Is pretty much going to have to join the French Foreign Legion, or at least test out the theory that the world's a lot smaller, these days, than it was for his parents' generation. I wish the guy luck, but...

Michelle: Will be all over the tabloids till Christmas, doing avant garde photo shoots with Jodie Kidd, if necessary, while vocally perplexed as to why her chicken's
giving her the cold shoulder, even though he's five meters away.

Marco: Brief tenure on the Home Shopping Channel, early death.

Vanessa: FHM photoshoots, doing fairly well. Affairs with Robbie Williams, and that guy from Blue. Potentially a series on Granada Men And Motors. Pills, booze ( which she'll recover from, ) and a Rod Stewart wannabe.

Dan: Cutting hair, cutting hair.

Shell: Will be engaged to, oh gosh, to a really great guy... May well end up walking up the aisle with Prince Harry.

Nadia: As above, except with Prince Charles.

Ahmed: I'll admit to being baffled.

And then there's Jason.

Obviously Jason will make his fortune off the "Coming Right Now" Fitness Video.

Anna, it seems to me that American reality shows love to present as highly manufactured, hence the popularity of shit like Survivor.

American tv is very keen on that glossy sheen, imo.

We like a few more rough edges.

Surprisingly everyone has retro-deleted Nadia's evidence of possibly the worst kind of human behaviour you can get from their assessment of her personality - physical violence toward another human being - her belting of jason was what provoked the lardy boys bomber jacket invasion. Was that ok, 'cos she's a girl, or simulcra thereof?

Nope, it was ok because it was Jason.

The "worst kind of human behaviour you can get"? Torturing him to death would probably have surpassed hitting him, I think.

Rawk'n'Roll

That was the straw that broke the camels back... the Victor/Emma tango was much more aggressive. It took BB that long to get Da Boys in by the time Nadia made a play for some S+M fun with Jason.
Didn't she throw something at him actually?

So, for those of us depending on this thread for our Big Brother activity, could all parties explain how Nadia belted? I am hoping to create an effect comparable to that when five different characters in a TV show all describing an event in flashback. Bonus points for correct usage of "simulacrum".

As would spanking him playfully. The Worst Human Behaviour A Man Can Get is rather a wide premise, t'would appear.

Except even more likely to be a completely incorrect description of events, seeing as how it was never broadcast.

I've been living without a TV and without an internet connection for over six weeks now. God knows how much I've missed out on.

Can anyone condense what's happened since the start of July into a paragraph?

There's an interesting article in today's Observer about Nadia...

Now into the second week of her new-found celebrity, Nadia reveals that she's still very much on a high. 'I haven't grasped it yet,' she smiles. 'I haven't stopped and said "That's me!" on TV and covers of magazines, or grasped being stopped by people in the street.' Has she ever felt pestered? 'Not at all. If it was negative stuff, you'd think, "Oh no!", but it is all "I voted for you", "I loved you". To hear such comments, who could ask for more? I should enjoy it," Nadia grins sagely. 'Next week, next month, whatever, this is all going to fade away.'
