Have you seen Saurian's vids of him controlling Dante in the PS2 version of VJ, Paleface? He posted them up again recently - here.

Don't go looking at them until you absolutely *need* to, obviously, but they're by far the best explanation of how to master and abuse the combo system - I never fully understood how it worked until I saw him playing it.

I'm beginning to understand it. The trick is waiting for the dodge, I got that far; then it's all about positioning. Things a lot easier now I have Zoom, but still, my best combo is about 440 V after the x4. Long way to go. Still, I'm practicing on Kids mode for now and loving it.

Yeah, for the really big scoring combos you want to get as many enemies dazed as possible before going into slow and hitting them. Try and wait around for as many as possible to appear on screen, then jump between a couple of them, dodge, jump over to the next two, dodge, maybe do it once or twice more, then hit slow and start knocking them into each other. The seem to drop more of those film reel refills this way, too, which lets you stay in slow even once you've taken out all of the ones you dizzied.

The real lunacy starts to kick in when dazing an enemy requires more than one dodge. I still can't deal with those ninja guys properly.

Kids mode is actually 'Normal', Adults is 'Hard'. I think if I'd known that on the day I bought it, I might have got along with the game much better from the off.

All this making me want to pick this up again! Although the original is deadly cheap nowadays... is the sequel out there yet?

However; having said that, I seem to suffering from a terrible abundance of games which I don't really have time to play through all at once. And yet I still keep thinking of new ones I want, and then Resident Evil 4... well... I have a feeling I'll need to play through that as quickly as possible.

Too many games! Aieeeee! Advance Wars is good in the sense that usually winning one battle is enough for one go, although that battle can go on for a fairly long time... I have a feeling if I was on a train playing this, I might be annoyed if I got there before I'd finished playing.

Ah, if only I was a child again, with nothing else to do. Or in my case.... hmmm.

I hear you Suedey... I'm currently in the mix of 3 games that are all requiring equal attention. It also does your head in a bit when you have to go from one style of play to the other. Sniping a solider at 500 paces without being heard and then running through a village with a shotgun aimed at head level is surprisingly different.

Still funnier is the fact that KoL has been sucking up more of my time than RE4. It's a terrible affliction to have...

I'm on the last stage of Advance Wars 2, and I think it'll be a little while before I pick it up and finish the game off - the Green Earth Campaign took a lot out of me and I'm quite thouroghly burnt out on that one for a while. There's a lot of stuff that the first game did better - Campaign mode is a lot more straightforward in 2, whereas 1 had lots of branching routes and hidden stages that doubled the replay value, at least. The character portraits have lost a lot of character thanks to the "darker" storyline, even if Kanebi does look like less of a dunce.

I just beat Harmony of Dissonance (second GBA Castlevania) and... eh. It's far better than one, but it's much, much shorter. The sound was neglected when they wrote the game engine - it's on a par with the Game Boy Castlevanias from the early 90s! Animation and sprite art for the characters is notably weak, too. It's still very fun and certainly one of the best games on the system, but it's easy to see that superstar 'Vania producer IGA only got into his stride with Aria of Sorrow. EBay is a great place for HoD and AoS, by the way, if you don't mind buying from Hong Kong pirates.

Another recent purchase as been F-Zero: GP legend, which is recommended highly. It's like the first GBA F-Zero but with far more cars, more of the "core" series cast involved (Captain Falcon, for one) and an anime based story mode.

Did you buy Wario Ware, Suedey?

Got Xbox Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, purely for online SFIII: 3rd Strike, and I'm shit at it. It's partly the pad - to perform well in any decent beat 'em up, you need to be able to pull off every move instinctively, and I just can't do that with either of the official Xbox pads - but it's mainly because I'm shit at it.

So, as a calming measure, I dusted down and fixed my mod-switched Saturn, and fired up some Vampire Savior. Still looks amazing, still plays superbly. Makes me wish that the Sat was still being supported by new 2D releases, NeoGeo AES-style. Also spent a little time with Pocket Fighter, which I've previously hated on. Playing it again now, seven years or so down the line, I think I've been way harsh on it - I'm sure it must make for a fantastic game to play with people who aren't really all that hot with 2D fighters. It's very simple in terms of controls and whatnot, but seems to have more depth than I've given it credit for. Will test this theory out later on in the week.

And keeping with the theme of older games on older hardware still being perfectly playable now, I've also been having gamesex with my NGPC. Again.

I'm also having difficulty with Street fighter on the xbox pad, (but if you fancy a scrap, my gamertag is the same as my name on this board) Before I bought it I imagined my self as some kind of Street Fighter expert, sadly to find out that I am in fact completely rubbish....
Still playing lots of Halo 2, and just got Metal Slug 3 for a tenner, which is as hard as nails but more fun than a barrel of sexy nude lady monkeys.

I'm becoming hilariously worse at Halo 2 the more I play it, still having loads of fun though, it really is the most extraordinarily well designed online experience the pain of continuing the play is minimal so you just continue to play.

And play and play and...

E Randy Dupre, didnt realise, will seek you out for a bout of SF3. when I'm online I tend to stick to Ken/Ryu/Akuma, but quite like Yun/ Yang if im feeling adventurous.

As for Halo, im having a similar problem to nedrichards, I think ive peaked at level 10, I did go up to 11 then had my ass kicked all over the place.
Recently Ive been humiliating myself on head to head, i dont think ive won one for ages, at best I would describe my performance as woefully inept. Quite keen to try a clan match.

Ooh! I have SFIII on Xbox. I need to test my X-Fighter Sticks some more, so I'll tell you how it goes - they're modded Saturn Virtua Stick overstock with Xbox USB and feedback.

Someone needs to make a proper sega saturn style fighter pad for the X-Box though, standard issue is really dreadful.

Eww. The Virtua Stick is nasty.

Magic Box is the answer. Haven't got the cash for one, but will buy as soon as. Then my old Saturn pads will take even more of a bashing. Have been considering pulling apart an Xbox pad and the Dreamcast arcade stick, then attempting to swap the bits from the one into the other, but if I fuck it up (likely) I lose one of the nicest bits of kit I own, and they're supposedly fairly difficult to come by nowadays. Plus, of course, it renders it useless on the DC.

I've started playing SF3 on Live again after a little break and had a great session last night; have been enjoying it tons. Gamertag is PalefaceX, btw. I mainly rotate between Ryu, Makoto and Dudley (in that order of strength), though am known to sample Ken and Hugo from time to time. Pulled off a perfectly lovely Gigas Breaker in last night's Hugo match, but got beat to kingdom come.

Love it. Tis a wonderful game. Really want to give Dupre a couple of games on it because I'm not so hot. I have this weird Xbox stick I got for twenty quid but which is surprisingly good - it's built on the frame of a Saturn Hori, I think.

Yeah, I so want to have some games against real people, but right now it's proving pad-smashingly frustrating. I am that scrub that all the decent players complain about - fecking up the specials and playing an accidental poke game.

It's like... you know how Dudley's got that ducking dash move, HCF+K? That's got to be seriously useful in loads of situations - it avoids fireballs, it can have an upper or a straight stuck on the end, it can lead straight into a throw or his dragon punch variant, and best of all it can be cancelled into any of his super arts. But every time I try and do any of this in an actual fight, I stuff up the HCF and end up performing a crouching standard kick, because I've hit the button without getting 180 degrees around the pad. And then I get smacked in the head as punishment.

Had decided to practice on the DC version of 2nd Impact, but that's no use because the move sets are different - instead of Short Swing Blow (the one where he fakes a dash backwards then punches) he's got an entirely different move called Thunderbolt (jumps into the air at an angle, then spins downwards headfirst onto yr opponent), throws are performed with the old B/F+MP instead of LP+LK, and so on.

It's not that I mind losing - as my current Win:Loss ratio proves - just that I'd at least like to be able to give people an enjoyable game while I'm doing so.

I'm playing through the Silent Hill series, as I've only gotten around to it now. It's great stuff; am currently going oldschool with the original, but that's providing enough thrills, particularly when played at night, with headphones on LOUD. That, and Forbidden Siren, which is one of the creepiest things I've played, and fiendishly difficult.

Dupre: seriously, play me. I feck up the specials with my stick all the time, doing 2369 instead of 236 and leaping over people's heads. Also, I get scrubbier as I get more desperate.

But I've been playing OK with Ryu, and my Makoto is moving out of instinct and into strategy. Got some good Dudders practice in this morning; found that lk-mk-mp-hp is a nice five-hit close in combo, goes to six when coupled with Universal Overhead if enemy's stunned. Also, crouching HK is a lovely setup for Corkscrew Blow! I've seen lots of evil crouching HK--> Hellish Combo of Death from Dudley.

I have a sick urge to learn Elena.

Also, if you want to play with pads/headsets so I'm on your handicap, be my guest. I'm only so-so with my stick. I play a semi-mean Ryu, and will always wheel Hugo out for a laugh.

Incidentally, if you DON'T have this game, but like 2D beat-em-ups, it's a must. Nice online community, not very laggy, tons of depth, and a Magicbox will let you use a decent stick. Plus you get SF2 and the SF2 anime (crap) free. It's about £20 if you hunt around.

Rothkoid >

I had Siren in my hands a few days ago but decided that I had too much to accomplish in other realms before I can give that a go. From what I've heard here and other places, it's cool, but fairly frustrating with the "trial and error" gameplay. You should post your comments when you're done though... still curious.

I'm glad to hear that you're playing the SH. The plot from SH is fairly complex and messed up beyond the exterior. I usually recommend for people to start off playing the second one if PS1 graphics get in the way of the enjoyment (plus it's a mostly unrelated side story of the series, so no spoilers). As I'm sure you're finding out, there's not many cheap thrills in the game and the hard work pays off. Watch out for the skinned children with big knives.

Hey paleface, would this be yr stick?

I'm a complete stick retard right now - I've used a pad for so long I'm having to re-learn how to use an arcade setup. The hight of the thing isn't helping - does anyone have the addy of a nice cheap arcade parts supplier, so I can score a longer handle to screw on in place of that dinky little ball?

I was reading up on the new Nubytech SF pads last night - they look comfy, but they're still 3D pads, rather than the neato cutdown 2D jobbies PS2 owners got.

The Nuby pads have had a major slagging, dude. I'd imagine that they're still a million times better than the official Xbox pads, but Nuby stuff always gets negative reviews. This is the pad I'm holding out for. Microswitched goodness.

Paleface> 2369! The Curse of the Joystick! Always happens when you move back to a stick after years on joypads.

I'll definitely give you some games when you're online. I really don't mind muffing it up if I'm playing against people I know, but when you're facing random strangers who use the same character ten games in a row and who you know you should have beaten in at least one of those ten games, it can be a little disheartening. Just don't expect me to know what I'm trying to do with anyone other than Dudley or one of the shoto characters (and I try and steer clear of them, because I know how much they're hated).

Crouching HK's. Hate 'em. Nearly every time somebody knocks me to the floor, I know that it's game over as I'll just be crouching HKed each time I try and get back up. What I wouldn't give for Vampire Savior's 'roll on rising' move. Any idea what the solution is? Can you low parry these as you're getting up? They seem to be unblockable until you've actually made it all the way back to your feet, unless I'm doing something wrong.

Doubt it very much. SNKP's support for the Xbox is... patchy, and Ignition are doing a really impressive job of fucking up their ownership of the UK licencing of the few things that are getting translated, so hardware seems even less likely.

Spatula Dupre: on the crouching HK thing; there's a quick-rise, think it's hitting down just as you touch the ground, not sure; also you SHOULD be able to parry asap. Try and dash back or leap up, I say. The Dudley anti-okizeme game is a bit tiresome after a while. I'm happy to experiment with character playing you; Makoto, Dudders, Ryu, Hugo keep me going long enough. I can also hack about as Ken.

Oh, and yes, the Akuma instant death combo is in there. His SA3 is actually three SAs in itself, one of which is the burning-screen-evil-shit thing. Singho does them when he's broed

Jetuh: don't get a longer stick. You're not meant to grip it like a dagger; you want the ball in the cup of your hand. You rest the side of your hand on the stick and the ball should just be in it. You then waggle by slamming your palm around, and grasp to pull left. Push forward, push right, pull left and down.

No, that's not my stick - I nearly got that one, though. I also then nearly bought a Hori EX purely because it's a) Hori b) a stick and c) has a headset socket. Magicbox won't let you use a headset, nor will any of the cheap sticks.

My stick is this:

It was £23 delivered and is pretty good, plus dead easy to upgrade with new parts. It is also good for Midway arcade classics...

Thanks for the tip - I'm playing EVERYING with the stick right now, to force myself into learning how to stickfight again (it lends itself pretty well to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, would you believe). I can pull off dragon punches most of the time now... if I'm not being gimped by my shitty fucking lag (I just played the most awful match ever against a guy in france-about half a frame per second...)

I need to get more into Collection - I've had it since about november, but you guys sound like fucking machines at it! Perhaps you gents would care to try a netplay build of MAME sometime? I have the hookups on most of the 2D fighter ROMsets, if you likey...

The Return Of Rothkoid
21:22 / 09.02.05
Siren: it'll probably be a while 'til I get it completed, but I have to say that what I've played so far - I'm a scant couple of missions into it - is *fabulous*. Voice acting is dire - I would've preferred it to be left in Japanese, and subtitled, given that hearing a broad quasi-Aussie twang on a Japanese character is particularly alarming.

I think, despite its trial-and-error feel, it's pretty good. The missions are HARD, as it's a pretty sudden-death health mechanic. (ie: you get hit with a hoe hard enough, you'll die - no second chances.) But the linearity is not exactly true - you can jump over the place a bit, given that the game's set up in a sort of grid manner - you've got a time period and a number of characters, and completing some parts of the game allow you to complete others, in different orders, etc. The graphics are great, and slightly creepy just in themselves, the use of light is superb. I like how, when you turn off a torch to avoid zombies, you take a couple of seconds to get the night vision happening - just like life.

Sightjacking is cool, in a sort of Ringu-video way - lots of static, lots of foreboding.

It's atmospheric, and I like. Will take dedication, though - it's a tough sucker.

Has anyone played Kuon? I don't think it's had a PAL release, and I'm desperate for one...

Silent Hill: FUCKING DEAD BODY IN A LOCKER FALLING OUT AND FREAKING ME OUT AT THREE IN THE MORNING AARGH!

Rothkoid: wait til Silent Hill 4. Man, that is nasty shit: it takes the whole Japanese horror of the first three and sticks it onto David Cronenberg. Freaks the hell out of me.

I am eagerly awaiting Resident Evil 4 which I have heard nothing but good things about, and is basically the not-zombie movie John Carpenter would make. Nasty body-shock-horror, lots of exploding heads, and sumptuous visuals.

Oh, and guns. Lots of guns. Which isn't quite the Siren angle on things, but horses for courses, you know.

Spatula: sorry for those games of SF3. I was sucking a lot, probably just tired. I'm sorriest of all about using Ken on you; that's just not right. I'm usually that good with Ryu. Nice Elena. She definitely deserves my attention, just too good. (And sorry for wasting your time with Hugo, my stick was nearly destroyed trying to Gigas Breaker you...)

The only Silent Hill I've played is the second, and that had a couple of things that put me off the series as a whole. There's one puzzle in particular that sticks in my mind (without spoilers, so don't worry) - there's a code on a wall that you need to use to unlock something in one section. You know it's a code and it's immediately obvious what it's for. Problem is, it's like those password boxes that you see on some websites, where you're given an image of some characters and asked to type exactly the same thing into the box underneath to verify that you're actually human. And, just like those boxes, it's bloody impossible to make out waht the code is properly. So I spent fucking hours trying out all the things it might be - is that character a 1, or is it a 2, or is it a 7, or is it a 4, and so on - before finally hitting the correct one (which, of course, looked nothing like how it was written on the wall) through a process of elimination. Because you can't cheat and check out the solution online, because the code's randomly generated every time you start a new game.

So, gah and erk. That kind of clouded my enjoyment of the rest of the game, tbh.

Butbutbut... if you like yr games scary and jumpy, I almost unreservedly recommend Project Zero/Fatal Frame. Again. Fucking terrifying, esp if played on yr own, at night, in the dark. It gets frustrating when you get up to a section with an almost insurmountable difficulty spike, but the enjoyment (if that's the right word) you'll gain from it up until that point is more than worth it.

Paleface: I'll get to it. Thanks to eBay, I have Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 waiting. (Hopefully, 3 is in my PO box as I type.) I'm enjoying the first one a lot - surprising myself at how freaky it is, and relishing the difference from roll-and-shoot games. (Speaking of which, I may be the only person in history who liked The Getaway.)

I've got Project Zero here, and love the atmosphere of it. The camera-as-weapon thing strikes me as a bit twee, for some reason, and it absolutely chews up memory card space. That said, the visuals are fabulous, if a little slow to walk around. I'm at the point where there's the door code, and I can't enter it properly... gah.

I'm hoping to get a copy of the second Project Zero soon.

(Apologies for the two posts in a row, but my laptop was running out of juice)

Spatula: sorry for those games of SF3.

Nonsense. I had great fun. I just get far more out of playing against or with people I sort-of know than I do Random Gamer X.

And really, I spawned most of those.

No problem with the Ken usage, mate. The last couple of days all I've had is people using bastarding Ken against me without appearing to know how to do anything other than his fricking specials, so it's nice to fight against somebody who can hit the punch or kick buttons without having to quarter circle forward beforehand while using him.

Nice Elena. She definitely deserves my attention, just too good.

Elena's an odd one. When I played Singho the first day I got the game, I won one match against him - I'm fairly sure it was with Elena. Everyone seems to hate her, but her moves are fairly simple. There's a 623 kick, which is just a dragon punch in disguise and nearly alway works wonders as a buffer move when you're knocked to the floor*, the two spinning kicks (421+K and 214+K, iirc) which work well in combos and can fool yr opponent into dropping their guard - I think it's the 214, but one of them's got a really odd hit pattern to it, so people tend to stop blocking after the first two hits and get smacked by the follow-up pair - and the added ability to poke like crazy and luck out with link combos as a result.

I can only think it's the fact that she's always moving around that makes her difficult to fight against - her standing animation is so much more elaborate than any of the other characters, it must make it hard to identify signposts.

Tell you who else I'm starting to enjoy - Chun Li. She's like a bloody ninja, flipping out all over the place. You can't even press back without her bouncing off one of the walls. The short fireball's easy peasy to chain into and you can really abuse her split kick. Spinning bird kick's still near useless, though, unless you can get the hang of buffering it.

JETUH>

you guys sound like fucking machines at it!

Can't speak for Paleface, but me? Nuh-uh. I know how to do most of this stuff in theory - because, bar parrying, it's all stuff that's been present in past Capcom fighters (EX moves come from Vampire Hunter, Super Cancelling was in SFEX+a, and so on) - but I'm finding the change in pace between the games in which I learned those techniques and SFIII to be making life very difficult. In other words, I'm not actually all that good at it in practice.

MAME isn't liking me at the mo. For one thing, my joypad lags quite badly when I try to use it for beat 'em ups, and for another I recently decided to change frontends to EmuLoader and I hate it. It's screwing up the sound on every game and takes about five minutes to boot.

If you've got Kawaks or Final Burn Alpha, though, and know how to configure them for Netplay (because I don't), I'll deffo be up for some games. I've got most of the decent CPS2 beat 'em ups on the hard drive already, gathering virtual dust.

*By the way, I'm now finding that to be the easiest way to avoid getting knocked straight back down when you rise - buffer a dragon punch if your opponent's next to you and obviously going to twat you back down. The special takes priority over whatever they're trying to do, as far as I can tell, so you either connect and punish them for cheekiness, or you miss, in which case the dragon punch makes you jump over their attack and still saves you from humiliation.

I wish I could bastard you up with Ken. I love Ken.

Unfortunately the only Street Fighter I'm likely to get is SF Alpha 3 on the GBA. Which I've been considering for weeks but having read countless reviews can't really justify getting. Even for £15.

Oh but the Alpha nostalgia is strong... every lunchtime at school, me and friends popping back to my house, the tension, the screams, the Ken specials I dished out.

I don't even know what SF3 is.
