I've just reimmersed myself in the joy that is Black and White. (I do this every now and then). One of those flawed, overly-ambitious games that gets a lot of shit, but which I love. (The other obvious examples in this category being Republic: The Revolution and Ghost Master. Which I also adored.)

Cor!

Did I forget to mention I got Skies of Arcadia, as well? I did, anyway. I thought I'd only played it a little, just to see what it was like, get to the set up... just rescued Fina, about to set out in to the world. 6 hours?! Blimey. A mighty big game, threatening to disturb my plans for actually doing things in the new year. I am considering hiding it, depending on how well I can manage when to play.

The Minish Cap was a much shorter experience, but it was wonderful all the way through (although I got really pissed off for various reasons at the end). It's just lovely all the way through, though. I loved working out how to do things when I was all teeny. And I can't gripe about it being short, because I played it until my hands were aching. Damn GBA, being all portable and impossible to keep flipped shut when you suddenly think of a wall you could have bombed earlier, secrets missed, things to try...

I've discovered I can't quite be bothered to get all the heart pieces, or look to fuse anymore, but I did play for a couple of days after beating it to find a few more sneaky little things. Oh, and try and find out about the mysterious third house which apparently doesn't exist, although that seems contrary to the set up in the game. I'm looking foward to playing it again, in a way. And managing to savour it, rather than acting like a starving man for whom Zelda is his first meal in a month.

I got Mario Kart for the GBA, as well, for a little bit of quick burst gaming. I orignally got the conversion of Mario World, but decided I needed something a bit quicker to dip in and out of. Rather than "well, I'll just beat every level in the game...."

I'm on my second, higher difficulty level, run through Half Life 2. The attention to detail is still astonishing me - the world is so convincingly realised - for example, it struck me this time round that when you hit the techno-organic gunships, they groan in pain, because they're alive. Very cool.

Whisper it, but I found the GBA MArio Kart to be a bit rubbish. Mind you, I always thought the same about the SNES original, too. Never could stomach the handling.

Quick Christmas gaming update:

Halo 2 - much, much better as an online multiplayer than it is in the campaign. So much so that if I ever bother to finish the campaign it'll be out of a sense of duty and lack of anything better to do.

Minish Cap - lovely, but I've not put all that much time into it yet, because of other games.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door - outstanding. Was disappointed at first, as the first town and dungeon feel identical to those in the original game, and the hub town is much less appealing than that in the N64 version. Things improve no end once those early sections are dealt with, though. Variety, humour, charm. Intelligent Systems = currently Nintendo's best dev team, no question.

Donkey Konga - big dumb fun, let down by a complete lack of polish. The worst visuals I've ever seen, wanting for a sense of style in every department. Excellent as a multiplayer game, because the sound sensor in the middle of the bongos lets everyone in the room join in when clapping is required. Bit dull as a single player game, because there's no real subtlety to play (unlike, say, Samba de Amigo or Cool Cool Toon).

Pikmin 2 - only had a quick razz on this, because it's not mine, but much tastier than first time around. Losing the completion time limit makes everything more enjoyable, letting you soak up the world rather than rushing through it in a panic.

King of Fighters 00/01 Xbox double pack out this coming Saturday. £15 in most places. Get some practice in and I'll hope to see Barbelith people online when the 02/03 disc comes out in March.

Paper Mario was definitely tops. Still need to get through that forever downward pipe-dream to finish it up. But I haven't spent much time with it since I got MGS3.

I must say, the new Metal Gear is quite good. Hideo Kojima understood that MGS needed some small improvements after the second release, with the feel from the original PS title. I'm nearing the end and I think I have a pretty good feel for Snake and his surroundings. As I'm sure you've all heard about it, I'll chime in too and say that "The End" boss battle is a nice departure from the run and gun scenarios that we're used to. I'm sure I'll drop in for a replay after I finish it up.

One more... RE4 seems to be what it's been made out to be... just shy of a week away and I'm really looking forward to booting up the ol' cube again. Finally RE without all of those pesky, reoccurring controls of the rest.

New year present to myself: a Gamecube. Have only scratched the surface of Resident Evil, and Super Monkey Ball is in danger of giving me nightmares, but Metroid Prime is great - slowly getting to grips with the world, have found the Rocket Launcher and the Morph Ball so far, and am loving it. But, mainly, up to now:

Zelda: Wind Waker. Gosh. So much joy; in some ways, this is the game I wanted OOT to be. I know that sounds heresy, and sometime I will return to OOT, but for now, I'm adoring this. Exploration, charm; it calms me as I play it. I've just defeated Gohma (beautiful) and done the first proper dungeon, which is great, great fun; all so logical as you suss it. Charming character design, too, and animation. Link's eyes alone fill me with joy. Only thing that annoyed me was the Forbidden Fortress; slightly too hard too early on, and a bit boring. Stupid, illogical stealth, redeemed by that glimpse of Ganon.

Ah well. Have put it to bed for today, having found my first treasure-chest (the grapple on the boat, hee!). It's an utter delight. And tearing me away from Metroid, curse it!

Incidentally, the GC is a lovely piece of hardware; so small, so quiet, perfect size, and so clearly a machine for playing games. The Wavebird is also delightful; I miss the rumble, but the lack of wires is almost worth it. Brilliant idea. Memo to all next-gen console designers: bluetooth-or-similar controllers. Enough bandwidth for headsets, no cables, everybody wins.

Hurrah! Somebody who agrees with me! Wind Waker is flawed, it's just that it's so easy to forget that when you actually play it.

I put it all down to the sheer beauty of the interplay between control and graphics. That's how to get immersed in a game. I don't even care how silly that sounds, or if I've said it before.

You know how long it took from the moment I put Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within into the drive until I decided to sell it, post haste? Approx 3 min 54 seconds of gameplay, at which point over nu-metal guitars the prince shouts 'You Bitch!' at a buxom BondageBoss. That's not the prince. I don't care that the last one didn't sell as much as it clearly deserved, you don't improve sales of one game by turning it into an entireley different one. Anyway, at least I'll be getting Fable as a result so, winner all round there.

Oh, I know! You're just cranky. Arf. I just keep wanting to express how well the game plays, and how that feels a lot more worthy to me regardless of structure and mechanics. I'm all about the feel, look and control if it's just right. I was thinking about this the other day, because of Skies of Arcadia... I don't know why, I was just reminded of the first time I played on a Super Famicom. My friend somehow got one sometime soon after they were out in Japan (How long was it before it was out in the UK? It seemed to be years) with around 20 or so games. SoA felt like the same vibrant and colourful style, but constantly surprising to me at the time in a "oh, wouldn't it be cool if you got to do that..." and then later on you found out you could, way. Of course, it may have been to do with having around 20 games with it. From Mario World, to Pilotwings, to long evenings trying to work out exactly what was going on in Actraiser. Probably a lot of nostalgia on my part, there, but I'm always looking to feel like an amazed child again...

Mario Kart is good - SNES original included and all - but it remains an annoying bitch of a game. I am certain that it is contrived merely to get players to utter the most extreme of insults at the unsuspecting cute characters. It's so unfair sometimes, but it's always nice to dip in and out of - unlike Zelda.

Hey: which Castlevania is the good one? The first GBA one is the best, right? And the PAL - or not PAL, but English - version doesn't have any subtitle, right? I'm really confused about what's what, with all these bogglingly long and meaningless 'Vania subtitles.

The first GBA Castlevania is the one I've played and one of the two that tend to get the most praise. Boxart looks like this, only without the 'Circle of the Moon' subtitle. Presumably because the series has never been as big over here as in the US and Konami Europe decided to use it as a fresh start after the iffy N64 games.

GET. ARIA OF SORROW. Circle of the Moon is OKish but it's a different, lesser dev team and Aria of Sorrow beats the shit out of it with lots of Swords and Lances and Knives and Knuckle Dusters and the FUCKING RIFLE FROM AKIRA which it got from Boss Rush mode.

Ahem.

The plot twist is ace (you don't play as a Belmont, either, so no vampire killer whip, instead you get tons of way more satisfying weapons and you can mix and match the stolen souls of your foes for super powers. It's really fucking compelling. It's also set around 2035, so it's the most "modern" in feel (Castlevania was originally planned to be a trilogy of trilogies- past, present and future). Get it.

Circle of the Moon is OKish - the combat is less fun, the items less important to the gameplay, the unique magic system (all the GBA games got a different one) less fun but still lots of fun.

Harmony of Dissonance is comming soon - that's the one with SNES-ish like whippin', a SOTN feel and apparently quite ace.

Get these off Amazon, they're hard as nails to find but oh so worth it. I picked the two I own up in Game 2nd hand and I was well lucky.

Mario Kart is OK but underwhelming for sure. Shame there's no Warp Pipe type thing for playing GBA games online or I'd kick your arse at it

Paleface: a note on the Gamecube RE...

Do you find the sporadic load times that pop up during FMV's annoying? I remember playing it for a bit when it first came out and I was definitely pleased, but after another play recently, I found that the stutters really broke the feel of the game. Maybe it was just my copy?

So.. haven't looked back in the thread's pages to check, but has anyone played the new Metroid? I hear good things, but I'm fancied by some other titles at the moment to really take notice.

I've got GTA San Andreas at last, and it's amazing. Massive, and amazing.

And Denise is so cute!

"WA-HOWWWWWW!"

"Have you ever been married CJ?"

"Why."

I got Wipeout Fusion too, I've been wanting that for ages but GTA has been the only thing on the PS2 lately. I can't even play it that much either because I'm busy doing other things, but I expect to be loving this game for a long time. The life of the thing seems almost endless.

I'm holding out. It's tricky, but I'm doing it. I even made a deal with Tango Mango whereby I'd buy San Andreas and borrow his PS2 for as long as it took, then give him the game afterwards in payment, but I'm holding firm for the PC version.

And boy, does it hurt.

I'm still on a big replaying games tip at the moment. Picked up Sacrifice for two quid on Amazon, and it's just as cool and just as weird as it ever was. Warcraft III still hits all the spots when you have those moments when only Warcraft III'll do it. And Call of Duty's as much fun as ever.

I managed to get a SNES and Megadrive emulator off a mate recently and I've been itching to construct a, ahem, virtual library of retro games (god, snes? retro? i'm old wah!)

After ransacking my childhood memory palace I found:

SNES: Chrono Trigger, Street Fighter 2, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Final Fantasy 6, Super Metroid

MEGA: Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles, Mortal Kombat 3, General Chaos, Shinobi, NBA Jam (he's on fire!).

Any essentials I'm missing? What would YOUR hypothetical 16-bit library look like?

I've played metroid. I had a massive write-up half written, but I got hit with a wave of apathy.

It's good, but perhaps a little too similar. The first half or so of the game is pretty much a retread of the original, with the same kind of environments (except for the dark world) and the same power-ups as the first. It does start to branch out and do its own thing after that though.

Good solid fun and a damn sight better than a lot of other games, but a little disappointing nonetheless.

No Ecco the Dolphin? I got my sister one of those mini-megadrive units for her Birthday which had Sonic 2, Columns and Ecco as the games you'd want to play and of them all I was just blown away by the quality of Ecco. I'd never played it before but the sense of freedom and intuitive control, wowza. They got something right there.

Also and I know I'm a hater of life for saying it but the FIFA 2005 career mode really fulfills a large part of my Football Manager desire whilst still leaving me with a life. The same wide database knowledge is rewarded and allows you to capture quality players like Marcello Salas from South America, Olivier Kapo and Jermaine Pennant and use them to stick your Heart Of Midlothia side to the top of the Scottish table with only four games to go. This is good for you.

I've got loads to say about Fable, which is fab, but I think I'll leave it for another time.

I can't explain how jealous I am that you have those already, but for SNES I'd get hold of Zelda and Starfox/Starwing, and MEGA I'd try and get Streets of Rage 1,2 and 3, and GoldenAxe.

And wow, do I remember those "He's on fire!" moments.....AND the backboard smashing.......

Ned, I didn't have Ecco the Dolphin as a child. I had a bit of gaming myopia over that one. Maybe to do with the fact that I can't swim or broadcast sonar.

Can't believe I got Link to the Past there, between the three of us my brothers and I must have put 80 hours into that fucker. Worth it, compared to the 40 I put into breeding a Chocobo coated in fools gold. God, I was stupid.

Anyway, I'd probably add *pff* let's see Altered Beast*, Golden Axe (the only game that let you boot shifty goblins up the arse for loot and profit), Skitchin', Road Rash, Afterburner II?

I was a Megadrive kid as you can tell. My SNES knowledge came from my mate 10 doors down. Between us we ruled the 16-bit Kingdom with a pixellated iron fist.

Now it may be me, but I reckon the characters of A-Beast were really gay:

And now I've been on the internet, they're REALLY furrie as well. Don't make me turn this childhood around!

Shake!

The best thing about the Cube version is definitely the tiny snatch of J-pop you get at the end of Find the Idol. Well, either that or the crawling competition.

I just finished Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Sad that I've got no areas left to find, but very happy that I've been able to keep a completed save file and use it to eke out every hidden item, sub-quest, character and gag that I've missed so far.

Had a run of outstandingly bad Halo 2 games last night. Not bad in the sense that I did poorly at them (I didn't), but bad in the sense that I got shoved into teams with complete and utter cunts. Hey dude, if I've grabbed the flag and made it all the way back to our base with it on foot, of *course* I don't mind if you then betray me four feet from the capture point so that you get the score. What's that guys? You want to have a laugh by allowing the enemy bomber into our own base, then killing anyone who tries to take him out, because pissing total strangers off is much funny? Sure thing! Dummying on CTF games so that you put everybody's Live account at risk of being banned? Go for it!

It's quickly turning into Counter-Strike, as far as cheating and general arseholery are concerned. And it just gets worse the higher your rank - once you start playing against level 16s and 17s, almost every single game suffers because of it.

I was playing Halo 2. I ought to play some more as I was quite good at it.

However. I bought a Gamecube.

So: Metroid Prime is going very well. Loving it to bits, not sucking at it, enjoying exploring, and liking some of the music.

Today I bought Viewtiful Joe. OK, this I like. It's fun and arcadey but it has skill/highscore type aims that I think might be doable. I already got my first x2 multiplier and a stack of Viewtifuls. It is WIN.
