I just picked up Star Wars:Battlefront and X-Men Legends this week.
Battlefront is quite good, but I hear that multiplayer is its key appeal. In the game you can play any battle from all 6 films in either the Clone Wars or Galactic War era as either the good or bad dudes. Each time you play, you can choose between different classes of soldier/droid which is a range of sharpshooter, grenadier, grunt or pilot who can do something I've not worked our yet as I usually just lob grenades at everything (killing my own men who apparently think I'm feeding them as they clamber near the grenade after I've thrown it). The graphics are great, the gameplay quite good, the maps a little small, but the satisfaction of playing a role in these battles is quite quite good. It's weird to play this after so many Tom Clancy games, though as the latter captures combat play so much better than Battlefront. But Clancy ain't got Lord Vader running alongside you in the heat of battle! I recommend it.
I was not sure what to expect of X-Men Legends. It's a multi-player RPG in the vein of Hunter: The Reckoning. This means you get exp points which go to upping your character's stats and gaining new abilities along the way as you scroll along the battlefield killing whatever gets in your way. With 15 different X-Men to choose from (sorry, no Angel), the choices are vast. The game developers went through a lot of trouble to rub the collective belly of X-Men fans all over the world with their little touches like mapping the mansion and giving the player access to the Danger Room. It feels like a dream to any long standing fan of the series (I almost lost it when I saw Rogue do a fast ball special with Wolverine). This is what you want from an X-Men game. On screen you control four characters, switching from one to another at a time while the computer controls the others. BUT if a buddy wants to join in the fun, he/she just picks up a controller and wammo! they now control one of the characters. Gotta wizz/get a drink/rethink your life? That's cool, just drop the controller and the computer takes over again! The graphics are hard edged and cel-shaded, complete with silly mitten hands, but for most of the game you're not close enough to notice due to the camera. Sound is quite good with voices and sfx getting precedence over music, which I didn't really notice a lot. The version of the team is Ultimate, but with hints of the movie franchise, which is confusing but pleasing if you let it be. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! |
