I was bored on the train home from work this evening so, rather than read my friends page on LJ as I normally do I quickly popped into Vodafone Live and had a look at the top 10 games. They had a Java port of the utter classic Epyx Summer Games and soon, so did I. Phones are just *made* for button bashing and I tell you the first time I dipped under 10 seconds in the 100m it meant just as much as it did before. If sensi mobile is this good Halo 2 may have to wait its turn...

I just picked up Star Wars:Battlefront and X-Men Legends this week.

Battlefront is quite good, but I hear that multiplayer is its key appeal. In the game you can play any battle from all 6 films in either the Clone Wars or Galactic War era as either the good or bad dudes. Each time you play, you can choose between different classes of soldier/droid which is a range of sharpshooter, grenadier, grunt or pilot who can do something I've not worked our yet as I usually just lob grenades at everything (killing my own men who apparently think I'm feeding them as they clamber near the grenade after I've thrown it). The graphics are great, the gameplay quite good, the maps a little small, but the satisfaction of playing a role in these battles is quite quite good. It's weird to play this after so many Tom Clancy games, though as the latter captures combat play so much better than Battlefront. But Clancy ain't got Lord Vader running alongside you in the heat of battle! I recommend it.

I was not sure what to expect of X-Men Legends. It's a multi-player RPG in the vein of Hunter: The Reckoning. This means you get exp points which go to upping your character's stats and gaining new abilities along the way as you scroll along the battlefield killing whatever gets in your way. With 15 different X-Men to choose from (sorry, no Angel), the choices are vast. The game developers went through a lot of trouble to rub the collective belly of X-Men fans all over the world with their little touches like mapping the mansion and giving the player access to the Danger Room. It feels like a dream to any long standing fan of the series (I almost lost it when I saw Rogue do a fast ball special with Wolverine). This is what you want from an X-Men game. On screen you control four characters, switching from one to another at a time while the computer controls the others. BUT if a buddy wants to join in the fun, he/she just picks up a controller and wammo! they now control one of the characters. Gotta wizz/get a drink/rethink your life? That's cool, just drop the controller and the computer takes over again! The graphics are hard edged and cel-shaded, complete with silly mitten hands, but for most of the game you're not close enough to notice due to the camera. Sound is quite good with voices and sfx getting precedence over music, which I didn't really notice a lot. The version of the team is Ultimate, but with hints of the movie franchise, which is confusing but pleasing if you let it be. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Managed to get my grubby mitts on the PC version of Full Spectrum Warrior and so far it fookin' kicks major ass.

Totally unique gameplay, not FPS but reminiscent of Counterstrike - it's almost a puzzle game in the way that you have to tactically use your squads to deal with the highly scripted scenarios. The graphics are nice, the sound is excellent (including the comments from your squads), the training missions for once really set you up well for the main game and the whole thing is blatantly trying to be Iraq.

It certainly keeps your heart pounding as you send your men frantically scurrying across open ground with no idea of what awaits them. Very cool indeed.

I just bought Burnout 3 at RRP. This is the greatest racing experience in the entire fucking world. I can feel the turbocharger kicking in, the grunt of the exhaust and the envy of my opponents as I thunder down the track at insane speed.

And crash mode, oh sweet crash mode. You remember Burnout 2? Imagine that. With hi-explosives.

Anyone else got it? You dig it?

Oh yeah, with regards to X-Men Legends being in the Ultimate/Movie stylee, this is true. However, lay the game enough and you can unlock the classic comic costumes as Claremont and Whedon intended.

Triplets, that's music to my ears. I'm a very easily lead consumer and in anticipation of this game have been re-reading my Cockrum issues. I don't really like the Ultimate versions, so that's so awesome that the 'Claremont' classic versions are in there... and what's up with Magma, Gambit and Jubilee as playable characters?? Where's my Havok, Polaris and Banshee!?

Nggh aghh uhhh. Outrun 2 released tomorrow. Why is this exciting? Take a looky here, here and here. The second link contains spoilers for the secret tracks, but as it's probably the worst-kept secret anywhere ever it shouldn't matter.

Those drifts - I've still only had a quick couple of plays on the arcade version and both of those were in third-person view, but the bonnet cam suddenly makes the comparison with Ridge Racer (previous holder of the Best Powerslides Ever award) even more valid. First-person is going to be the only way to play this. Racing games just don't get better than when they allow you to go around corners sideways.

Shame that the first vid doesn't use proper Outrun music. You need something like Splash Wave playing in the background to get the full-on summer breeze joyfest hit from it.

And that video at the second link... Spoilers now. Daytona 2 tracks (rolled into one continuous Outrun-style point-to-point race) combined with Ridge Racer Revolution levels of speed and handling. Stupid, stupid Daytona music. This is the best thing ever. The only slight downer is that it makes a proper Daytona 2 conversion even less likely than it was before.

On current evidence, the chances of me ever leaving the house again do not look good. If this fails to sell because "it doesn't look as good as Burnout 3," I *will* turn sniper rifle/belltower.

Wario Ware's great fun (although the GC version's single player is a bit of a mess compared with the GBA original). I'm really liking what Nintendo are doing with the series. It looks like a completely new innovation with each version - while the first GBA and GC versions are largely interchangable, bar the multiplayer stuff, the upcoming GBA game uses motion sensor tech and the DS version looks like it'll be entirely touch-screen driven.

Just as long as they keep it as funny as the first game. The knowing humour in some of their recent GBA output has been way more effective than anything other developers have managed to write.

I had quite the argument with Game today. There was I, standing in the store looking at copy upon copy of Evil Genius that had just been delivered, whilst the clerk - drunk with power - refused to sell me a copy until the official release date of tomorrow.

Bah! He will be the first target of my death ray. Oh yes.

... i hate it when they do that ... so many times i've stood there during late night shopping on a thursday, gazing at rows upon rows of gaming nirvana, only to be told 'sorry! no! i'll grab your money tomorrow, thank you!'

What's the minimum spec for Evil Genius, Stoatie?

Loving Wario Ware so much - I've played it to death on my GBA emulator but I figured it would be a good idea to throw money at nintendo for making it. The clerk in the Computer Exchange then held up the transaction for at least 5 minutes talking about how great it was (and I agreed with him, so I didn't care). I've yet to hear word on the tilt-sensor sequel getting a UK or US release, and it isn't on the Gamefaqs database, so I have no idea when the fucking thing is comming out, but oh my christ when it does I am SO THERE.

Evil Genius specs:- GeForce2 or equivalent (16m) 800 mhz cpu, 128 mb ram. Not that high, surprisingly.

And my resolve broke. I got Rome this morning. It's gorgeous. There's a more Civ-type thing going on with the strategy screen, which actually makes for better gameplay, but makes it less like you're doing the whole "moving pieces on a board/godlike clash of the titans" kind of thing which I liked.
Fuck. It's just a fantastic game.

Having come home early from the pub to play both, I now find myself tired, and must get up early so I can give them both the time they deserve in the morning.

Oh God this depresses. So many great games and no money to ease my pains. Many of these involve buying a new console: Halo 2, Halo(bit behind on that one), Fable, GTA, etc. Some do not: Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin2.

Looks like I'm hibernating for the near future. N64'ing it with Paper Mario, then regressing as time goes on through emulators until I emerge, toothless and broken clutching a Game 'n' Watch whose batteries long since gave up the ghost.

I've even lost my fucking copy of Wario Ware for the GBA.

Please, keep talking. I'm like a starving down-n-out with his face pressed against a bakery ventilation shaft.

Played the Evil Genius demo - ran great, and lordy if it isn't like Dungeon Keeper, which is no bad thing. Bit more elaborate, which I like. And the Cell Shading is sexxxx.

Also, I'm playing (ace Half-Life Mod) Natural Selection's Combat maps a lot, which is ace Aliens vs Colonial Marines action. Yr standard blend of jerkcity style homophoboa/repressed homosexuality from the players, which may put some 'lithers off but you really should try it.

I'm going to keep talking about games until they get their own forum, and you all should too.

Shit me, but Outrun 2's fantastic. The conversion of the arcade modes is perfect. Handling is superb with the pad.

Mission Mode is inspired. A lot of the missions are the same kind of thing as you got in the arcade Heart Attack mode, but there are some clever new ones. Math Madness gives you a number at the start of the race and places commands every few feet along the track - +4, -7, that sort of thing. When you get to the end you're given a choice of two gates to go through, each of which is marked with a different answer, and you've got to go through the wrong one. This while you've also got the other road traffic to contend with and a countdown to beat.

Opened up the three main secrets now - the original Outrun and the tracks from Daytona 2 and Scud Race. Haven't found the original music for the latter two, though, and it feels a little odd racing round them with the Outrun soundtrack playing.

Live modes are a little iffy at the moment, but they're being fixed - the guys from Sumo haved joined some of the UK gaming boards recently and are communicating with gamers about the problems they're encountering. Some time trial tables aren't updating and there's some nasty lag in multiplayer races. It's still bloody good fun - I've spent ages whittling hundredths of seconds off my Palm Beach time, working my way up the high score table (that one works, thankfully).

Essential for anybody who's ever played and enjoyed a Sega racer. It's got exactly the same addictive qualities as Daytona and Sega Rally.

Played Outrun 2 in the arcade on Saturday. Best pound I've spent in a lnog time and came out with a very big grin. Powerslides are just so much *fun*.

[sidenote: Origional outrun is, like Space Harrier, also available in one of the arcades in Shenmue 2 on the Xbox and Dreamcast. "Would you like a game of lucky hit?"]

Well, I've only gone and done it, haven't I?

A couple of evening ago, in a beer-induced buying frenzy, I stumped up my ~£30 for the Silver package of Half Life 2 on Valve's funky pull-one-over-on-the-distributors-coz-they-ripped-us-off Steam system, which gave me the added benefit of being able to play the newly spangle-ised version of Counter Strike. The one which uses HL2's new Source graphics engine.

Honestly, I would have paid the money for CS:S alone - getting HL2 will be a bonus. A fooking great big, steaming, just-shat-by-the-bonus-monster bonus, judging by the magazine reviews that have just surfaced; 96% and 98% spring immediately to mind. Even if these reviews are just pure bribe-induced hyperbole I'm pretty sure a damn fine game lurks beneath.

Plus, I get to play it the second it is officially released, which can only ever be a good thing, surely.

Roll on HL2, is all I can say... (not literally)

I SO RARELY buy games when they first come out...I prefer to wait until they drop the price to $20, unless it's a Final Fantasy game, then I troll for it used.

I noticed that this year, they are really bunching up the games for the last quarter, mostly because that's where all the gaming money has been spent that last few years. But DAMN it means that most of the good new stuff comes out in a two month period.

and what's up with Magma, Gambit and Jubilee as playable characters?? Where's my Havok, Polaris and Banshee!?

At a guess, Jubilee and Magma are in there because they have appeared in cartoon versions - the "classic" 80s Jubilee in the less-than-classic trad X-Men cartoon, and Magma in the somewhat joycore X-Men: Evolution. Gambit's just inexplicable, but popular with it.

On a similar, although obviously rather classier, retro tip, I've been assuaging my City of Heroes jones (I have sworn to myself never to get involved in MMORPGs, lest they destroy my otherwise full and happy life) by skinning Freedom Force like a loon. Some odd bod out there has created a Starman 2 (or arguably 3) suit, you know. Mikaal Tomas, large and in charge. How specialist is *that*?

Also, while looking for games to loan to a friend, I came across Half-Life, which I have loaded up and put on the highest settings possible - had to use OpenGL, as even the latest update has some problems with DirectX9.

Although it's obviously a bit of a clunker - most obviously, the image of Freeman moving objects by pelvic-thrusting them along with his hands behind his back, and the fact that you and the objects you interact with all appear to be moving around on a sheet of ice - I'm still massively impressed by it. Given the limitations of memory and programming, the characterisation - especially when you are just wandering around the lab before it all goes tissup - is terrific. I remember last time around doing everything I could to keep the security guards alive, because they were so friendly and actually keeping their ends up surprisingly well. I think being responsible for actions and people is something I enjoy in my games - Half-Life and the Thing (both of which suffer rather from linearity, although both might be excused in different ways), and Deus Ex - I'm holding out on DX:2 until I get clarity on whether it's any good (or it drops to 9.99), and I suspect HL2 will occasion buying a new PC.

Still, how will they match the thrill of whacking a headcrab-infected scientist in the face with both barrels of a shotgun at close range for the first time?

Haus> Deus Ex 2 compared to 1. More freedom in how you tackle specific situations in the game - how you enter a room, how you deal with the people in that room - but less physical freedom. Levels are more linear and a lot less open. Eventual annoyance at the fact that your actions in the majority of the game have remarkably little effect on the final outcome has to be weighed up against the fun to be had reloading old saves and attacking situations in new ways.

I enjoyed it, because I wasn't expecting the world.

Tez> The SW Lego game's a smart idea, but I wouldn't get too excited yet. Traveller's Tales have never managed to create anything better than middling, more often struggling to manage even that - their high point is the Sonic racing game on the Saturn.

Started Pikmin 2 last night. It is almost entirely fantastic, the nearest I've seen a computer game come to a work of art (art as in rich oil painting; finely crafted; work of genius; cistine chapel etc). No other game makes me as happy, in a 'hullo trees, hullo sky', skipping gaily thru the meadow kinda way, as Pikmin. I love the fact that I feel guilty when even a single Pikmin gets eaten/squished/blown up/poisoned/electrocuted or drowned. Urgh, especially the drownings, they seem to take forever. Stay out of the water, you fucking idiots!

Yes, damn near perfect, like the first, but I do have a couple of quibbles:

- Not sure I like the fact that there is no limit on the number of days this time round. Contrary to some of the reviews I've read, there isn't the same sense of urgency. It takes away the incentive to cram in as many retrievals as possible in a day.

- Unsure about the underground sections. Don't really feel a part of the same environment, which jarrs a bit. Very linear. Actually, the game as a whole feels more linear than the first, but it's still early days (I'm in the second landing area).

Anyone else playing it?
