Cap kicked all kinds of ass in that issue and I loved it!

Hmmm, liked how Cap acted excatly like the old Gruenwald Cap I remember from my youth, as I was slightly afraid that Millar would just write him as being as much of a wanker as Ultimate Cap. Also liked how shield tried to take Cap out in much the way Millar had ultimate shield got Ultimate Cap, but that 616 Cap came away victorious. Didn't like, well everything else really. The rest of the book read like Millar on one of his worst laziest days, which is a crying shame as I really was hoping for good Millar here. As I do with every single one of his projects, only to walk away dissapointed a good 70% of the time.

I wouldn't mind a banner that says "I am with Doctor Doom" (or maybe just "I am with Doom")

I think things will start picking up. Millar had to introduce everyone, and introduce readers to the concept of the story for those who didn't buy the lead in books, and still squuezed in a cool action sequence. I think next issue he gets to cut loose a little more.

Thumbs up on the Gruenwald style Cap, he's gotta be one of Millar's faves. And lots of Ultimates stuff there, like the tranquilizer cap stuff, crazy eyed Hank Pym, giant men. Wonder what Millar's 616 Fury will be like if he comes into play later.

I'm not sure whether to thank Fly or be fed up that he got here first.

Okay, I really want to like this series. I'm much happier with it conceptually than I ever was with Infinite Crisis - which to my mind was shambolic reading if (only a bit) fun in a kinda IloveDC sorta way - and so far the execution has been considerably smoother than DC's continuity fest could ever have hoped to be.

That said, Millar really did struggle to bring any solid characterisation to this issue, and the two camps' positions were sketched with fas less grace and articulacy than both Bendis and JMS have managed. Still, the Cap action was topnotch, and the art was functional (I don't love McNiven but I suppose he'll do) in that it's clear and dynamic and sombre enough to give a sense of weight to the proceedings.

I can't help thinking that whilst Millar's contribution to Civil War may well be servicable the event might also bring out his unfortunate misanthropic streak in that I reckon friend might end up liking beating on friend a little too much (I totally agree with Fly's comments about Iron Man and his repulsors). I also suspect that some of the crossover material might end up bettering the core book to a considerable degree. I think the Bendeece and Brubakers and Strasyssinkys will be more at home with much of this material than our boy Mark.

So I'm cautiously excited about this one, I really hope it manages to live up to my expectations, but I'm bracing myself for some disappointment at least as far as the Scottish is concerned.

Yay the Watcher!

This is why Strasynzzkiey needs a strong editor. The only Spidey stuff he's done that doesn't make me wanna throw up was his Civil War prequel stuff. He shouldn't be left to his own devices on that book.

Have we all noticed what side the Big Brains are on?

Jack Denfeld
18:35 / 06.05.06
Well, there's only like 2 big brains, Tony and Reed, yeah. Prof X is a smarty poseur and I imagine Beast is way smarter than him, Spidey's probably a level or 2 lower than Tony, but Spidey's an intellectual slacker anyway.

You think Millar was trying to make a point by having the big brains on one side, or it just happened the big brains were kinda ripe for that side anyway (Tony having outed himself once already, and Reed never having a secret ID)

Oh yeah, Hank Pym too. Just missing Banner now.

Shiny: Well Over Thirty

Well there's Banner as well, but they've already made sure that he's well out of the way along with the Hulk. Kind of a shame since I might have been interesting to see Banner and Hulk taking opposite sides in this. Banner I think would have been very much on Tony and Reed's side on this and since he'd be speaking from personal experience might well have been a good deal more sympathetic as a spokesman for supporters of the act.

Ah man, that would have been perfect. Also with Banner being more sympathetic than Tony. Missed opportunity there.

Saw him. I thought he was missing at the moment as well. Guess he'll be making his return either here on in one of the X-books in the next few months.

Okay, I suppose could argue that I should've approached the Newsarama interview with Joe Q with caution and spoiler shields set to max, but, you know, these things are hardly ever filled with genuine proper spoilers. Sadly today proved to be the exception.

Clicky if you want to know more about a key confrontation

I appreciate that you feel as if he's being a dick at the moment (though it's unclear why - please elucidate,) but Dr Strange has surely got a few more books in his library than Iron Man, hasn't he?

And on the Iron Man issue generally, personally, and given that he's about to put himself under all this pressure, I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't at least have a couple of drinks too many at some point during this series.

Yeah, looked like Thor at first, but the page is clearly from the Frontline side-series, and there's no way they wouldn't let Millar and McNiven bring ol' Thunderhead back.

Quick question: Why is Peter Parker taking pictures for J. Jonah Jameson? I thought the Daily Bugle thing was behind him at least since he joined the New Avengers and became Stark's P.A.

Actually I thought it was Cap. Having Cap pick up the hammer - and having it work for him - would be a suitably Millaresque twist to the...

Cap vs Iron Man fight

Glad to be wrong.

"Guess he'll be making his return either here on in one of the X-books in the next few months."

Last month in X-Men: Deadly Genesis a.k.a. "Brubaker phones it in." On the bright side, once again he's got his legs back (bet Vulcan fixes that) and of course, he's also no longer a mutant.

I like where it could be going. The Cap fight was the definate highlight of the first issue. I am really looking forward to Spiderman + X-Men vs F4 + Avengers huge battles. I liked Spiderman's response to Sue Richards suggesting that going public wouldn't do all that much harm.

Spidey's response was interesting. The way I read his comment is that registration wouldn't do that much harm because those most threatened by it would simply retire.

He can't and won't retire of course. But I wonder if Marvel will truly evolve the Spider-Man character and have him reveal his secret I.D. to the world in this storyline? Or will he simply switch costumes and side with Cap? I kind of like him on the Avengers, hanging out with Tony and Reed. It's time for him to quit being a loner, like Frankenstein over in 7 Soldiers.

Shiny: Well Over Thirty
18:59 / 08.05.06
Well, I reckon Spidey probably will switch sides, but given how little trouble most of his worst enemies have had finding out his ID and getting to his family these last few years, if he decided to be practical about it, it might not be the worst idea in the world for him to go public if being public meant he could get some decent S.H.I.E.L.D protection for his loved ones.

It's interesting, I want to be on Cap's side on this, especially since Iron Man is acting like a total shit in Civil War, but I'm definitely begining to think myself round into the pro registration side of things. Maybe it's because Millar has done a much better job of presenting the anti case so I've ended up doing work trying to think up pro registration arguments myself.

My only comment is "And people think SHIELD is competent because...?"

They get taken over by villains/turn corrupt about once a month. Would YOU trust them to protect your loved ones?

Shiny: Well Over Thirty
19:07 / 08.05.06
Fair point. I guess I was kind of thinking that if all those Superheros happened to be tied in to SHIELD then that might actually help to keep it an awful lot less corruptible. But you are totally right, it ought to be a heck of a lot better to have SHIELD protection, it really, really ought to be, but it would probably be even worse.

Spaniel
19:30 / 08.05.06
Given that Spidey is cut down the middle - old costume on one side, new on the other - in the press art, I think it's likely that he'll switch sides, or at least be very conflicted.

And, Blimey, I would've thought his status as Marvel's most angst ridden character pretty much guarantees some wobbling on his behalf.
