As for last week's episode, it really didn't do much for me. The producers have tried in vain since the show began to give us all sorts of hints about Kate's explosive and mysterious past. But now that we've seen what she actually did, it wasn't explosive, shocking, or even interesting. It was like a redneck soap opera: "I done blew up Pa so you could get the insurance money, Ma." And the ramifications of her backstory were just befuddling: so Kate sees remnants of her stepfather (aka her birth father) in Sawyer? The black horse represents her father, or her guilt over murdering him, or was it the animal that caused the car wreck which allowed her to get away from the ever-annoying cop, who despite his death early in Season 1 keeps showing up in flashbacks? Regardless, the horse on the island took this show into Twin Peaks realms, and that's not meant as a compliment.
The stuff going on around the island in "real time" blew away Kate's backstory. This season so far has been the reverse of last season. Last year, the backstories were sometimes the best part of the episode: Locke's past in "Walkabout," Jin and Sun's respective backstories, Locke's trip to Australia, etc. But this year the backstories haven't had the drive of the island stories.
The Dharma educational film was a bit much a few episodes ago, so I wasn't thrilled to see its return -- especially the deus ex machina of Eko having the cut-out scenes! But who cares, it was fun seeing Locke and Eko interact. One thing that bugged me, though: when Locke was surprised to see Eko had the missing film, Eko said something to the effect of, "Don't confuse fate with coincidence." Now, if he'd said this to Jack, it would have made sense. But isn't Locke Mr. Faith/Fate/etc? Also, the guy playing Eko is a MASTER of the simmering glare -- I burst out laughing several times at his expressions, especially when he just got up and stormed off after watching the Dharma film, glaring all the way.
Oh yeah, the Jack/Kate kiss. The producers are really throwing us around. Kate's been acting smitten with Sawyer, but then runs to Jack and makes out with him after trying to kill Sawyer, whom she later confesses to compare with her repugnant father. Okay. Jack however proved himself to be the player; knocking back a few with Ana-Lucia later that same day -- don't you want to save that alcohol for future medical emergencies, Jack? Guess not. I hate to admit this, but I find myself like A-L a bit more now. I'm 99% sure this is due to when she just kept pumping bullets into the guy who nearly killed her. And as for Sayid on the TV screen in the Army office, it was a nice trick, but much too fast and clever for its own good, and nowhere near as cool as Hurley's WTF??-inducing appearance on the TV in Jin's backstory, last season.
Also, I really loved Michael going to town on those ancient computers. That was hilarious. What was he trying to do, boost the memory or something? Who, when discovering a well-stocked bunker in a mysterious, desolate island, decides to tinker with the freaking computer?? Maybe he wanted to play solitaire or something. So who thinks it was really Walt writing to Michael, or some devious Other trick? The preview for the next episode looks pretty interesting: looks like Michael gets into the gun cabinet and goes out for some revenge. |
