Mr. Echo is fantastic. When he first told his name to Sawyer, I thought Sawyer was mispronouncing it in his redneck way, but it was later repeated by Ana-Lucia. Echo was also the scariest motherfucker on the planet as Adebesi in Oz. Seriously. Adebesi was fantastic, and my waning interest in Oz coincided with Adebesi's death (and the murder of the week crap).

I guess it is possible that the Tailaway's Others (They) are other Tailaways that were infected with the violence virus/meme, which might explain how they have slightly more intimate knowledge of them, and why they seem to have had more trouble with them. Or it could just be your run of the mill, Lord of the Flies descent into savagery. I suppose They could sort of join with the Others in an unholy union. The teddy bear could belong to Rousseau's lost child Alex.

Echo and Locke need to combine their DNA and raise a child that becomes a god of the wilderness.

this is maybe a wider discussion, but it's ridiculous how easy it is to know any spoiler about upcoming episodes you want.

the big shocker about the next episode is all over the place, and you can basically bump into it without even trying...like i just did.

how do people feel about that aspect of television these days?

also, i just saw a breakdown of the upcoming flashbacks until episode 10.

potential spoilers

yeah, it's something interesting

i know, spoiler space...blah

blah?

Potential Spoiler here:
#7 + #10 are being kept under lock and key, "forbidding" even the knowledge of who the flashback is about. #7 in particular is being touted as "differs from every other Lost episode in at least one key aspect."

Hmm.

Darren Aronofsky to direct a Lost episode!

Whoa, expect blood curdling sounds, drills in brains, and lots of drugs.

I think that with the long gap between apisodes, it was inevitable that this one would be spoiled all over the shop, especially seeing as the episode ended with that trailer "ONE OF THESE WILL DIE!", of course people are going to wonder.

Although it would be very cool if we could keep the name out of this forum, at least until after the start of the episode.

Also, I'm not too familiar with how US telly works. What's up with the long gap? Thanksgiving or something (don't laugh at me please, I just have no idea about US public holidays)

So I think once again, there are two sets of others -- the real ones, who have Walt's kid, and a savage batch of former survivors who've gone nuts.

You might be wrong there. When Mr. Eko and Jin are tracking Michael, Eko says, "They don't leave tracks".

Recall that when Charlie and Sayid rescued Turniphead at the flaming brassier Sayid made a point of saying, "there are no tracks". They and the Others are the same thing.

That's not to say there isn't a set of Tailaways who have gone bugfuck cannibal, though. They might even be the They.

I've thought that: But if Ethan Rom was a bugfuck Tailaway/Other/They, he'd be in Hurley's census. But he's not. Why would Ethan Rom use an alias, if he is in fact a wandering Tailaway?

That's true but we've not seen how compos mentis They are yet.

I'm wondering if the Others and They share certain traits (island/wild affinity, untrackability, superior strength etc) but what seperates them is that the Others operate at a higher/human level rather than wandering pack mentality.

As it is, you could ask why They decided to light the brassiere but that makes no sense.

I'm not sure how Ethan fits. I'm still thinking he's an Other or some kind of rogue Other, or an independant operative like Danielle or Desmond.

He's certainly not a They, unless they can pass for normal people (with a hint of simmering ultraviolence underneath).

I am loving the Lost.

Best thing about the Raftaway episodes is all the B-list characters fucking rule (can I fourth a "rock!" for Mr. Eko?). Any episode that has Bland Jack and Bland Kate as glorified extras is okay in my book. May it continue.

Honestly I've been waiting for the fountain for four/five years and this seems like a waste of time for someone so gifted. He should be catching up projects instead of directing a show that doesn't need a great director like him.

At the risk of sounding like a fool (haha, me?! =) ), aren't "the Others" and "they" the same thing? I think the confusion started with the 'tailaways' (as good a name as any), who were first confused with the Others (and, confusingly, calling t'Others "them" or "they"), especially in the ep where they were first seen, chasing Jin.

However, I think it's fairly obvious that there's only one group of murdering supernatural freaks on the island. Ethan was one of them, they were the same group that took Frenchie's kid and Walt. I think the Others have been bumbing off the Tailaways, presumably because they're nearer to them than the Lost-aways. That's why FTLB has "trust issues" - they were probably 'welcomed' with open arms, followed quickly by the slaughter of half the tailaways' group. At least, that's how it seems to me, on first glance.

Surely, if there were two groups of hostile people on the island (for years), one group would have emerged victorious by the time of the show. Remember, the French woman has been there for around 16 years, along with these other crazies, and the Others wanted her kid, much like they wanted Walt. The question is: why? And, did Frenchie's kid have creepy powers like Walt?

This show is far too good, I curse the Americans and their crazy, frustrating way of watch television.

KJ, the reason I think They and the Others are a seperate group is because the Others appear to be a fairly coordinated group of savvy, wise-ass pirates whereas They (the ones stalking through the jungle past Jin and Eko) seem to be bedraggled and barefoot, silent savages.

I think (going by what someone posted above) that They are Tailaways infected by violence, "the sickness" as Danielle and Desmond put it.

Wonder what direction Eko was pointing at when he said "that's where They come from". They might come from the Dark Territory where Danielle's Martin "lost an arm", where the Black Rock is, where the Blurry Things live.

Juxtapositional Eugenics

Juxtapostion, as we know from Shakespeare, is placing two things that differ greatly next to each other to exaggerate thier differences. Eugenics is selective breeding of a desired trait or behavior.

Put the two together and you get selective breeding for either opposing traits in the same person which is confusing OR more likely, Evil Twins. Maybe the others are this experiment gone awry. Evil twins of the DeGroots manipulating airplanes and boats so they have subjects for psychotic experiments. Maybe.

A recent rumour for an upcoming episode hinted that they were casting a blonde actress who looked, specifically, similar to Maggie Grace/Shannon. Evil!Shannon!

At least, that's how it seems to me, on first glance.

If the tailaways were welcomed with open arms by a reasonably sized group of others, wouldn't they all be dead? What with the others being generally pretty good at killing tourists even when they're not sleeping in the same tent?

Of course, it's possible that Mister E and PTLB are just hard enough to save the two useless-for-combat-but-probably-plot-important people they still have with them, in which case the trust issues make sense.

I can't see it being the tailaways converting to ultarviolence memes being the cause of them (trust issues), either, otherwise Mr E and PTLB would have killed/imprisoned Michael, Jin and Sawyer regardless of believing their 'we're from the plane' story. Probably.

So I think it was probably a similar operation to what happened with the first group - one (or maybe two) of the Others infiltrating the group and doing bad mean things to them, followed by the big reveal, but then a more concerted campaign of culling.

What I want to know is who Locke thinks he's talking to when he keeps yelling out "What do you want from me?!!" and etc. Is he talking to the island, the monster, or what?

It seems like we're supposed to think that he's talking to the island, but what looked like the island responding to him in the first season (the light from the hatch) is now shown to probably have been Desmond - who knows nothing of Locke, and isn't interested in him, really. Surely Locke would realise that only Desmond could have enlightened him earlier on, but he still yells out to no-one in particular.

I don't know where I'm going with this, or why, I just watched the whole of season 2 so far in one sitting, instead of sleeping, and I can see things moving in the grey area to either side of these posts...

Here's something interesting that seems to support the above - Hyperion Books is soon to publish a novel called "Bad Twin," written by fictional author Gary Troup (anagram of "purgatory," ho ho), who was a passenger on Oceanic flight 815. Apparently the manuscript of the book will be found by the castaways on the show...and then you can go to the bookshop and get it for yourself. Creative marketing.

Anyway, the novel synopsis is here (click on the author's name for his "bio"), and certainly seems to tie in with the "evil twin" theme...

I wonder if Shannon has reall died/really will die. You know how Lost/JJ Abrams are about red herrings. Certainly looks like she's on her way out, but there are rumors afloat that she was stabbed, not shot (amateur experts freeze-framing their tapes have claimed Shannon's wound is from a knife, not a gun...okay, guys), and that Anna whasterface was shooting whoever attacked her.

I don't buy that. And I wouldn't be surprised if Shannon really died for two reasons: 1.)Her character arc is mostly over, and was nonexistent to begin with (both her and Boone were stuck with lousy backstories, compared to the other survivors) and 2.) Sayid proclaimed his love for her, and that he would never leave her -- a sure sign in any show like this that someone's gonna die.

However, it would make sense from a thematic standpoint if Jack somehow saves Shannon in the next episode (which I'm guessing won't be for a while -- looks like the producers are taking a one step forward, two steps back approach next week, giving us the backstory of the tail-enders instead of continuing on with the current plot developments). Maybe Jack will find some equipment in the hatch that will help him save her. The reason I say this is, Jack has failed twice in saving people in Shannon's family -- her father died in his operating room (though last night's ep fudged it by saying Shannon's dad died on the scene, despite the events as shown in the season premier, where he died in the ER), and Boone died in Jack's arms. So maybe Shannon will be his redemption?

In any case, I'm not that concerned. Shannon was never one of my favorites, and I much prefer the idea of a grief-stricken Sayid gaining his vengeance upon the loathsome Anna Lucia.

Since I knew everything that was going to happen (which I'm really starting to tire of, but, you know, it's my own damn fault) this was a slightly creepy but mostly boring episode, until the last frame that is. Mr. Sayid totally sold the preceding 43 minutes of lacklusterness with the look on his face. I was all "YES."

The coolest thing, though, was the stewardess getting snatched in like two seconds. Wicked.

I'm not sure many people would think of the victim as being a particularly central character, nor a particularly likable character.

As a supposedly 'big' episode designed to attract viewers this fell pretty flat IMO...

Shannon is definitely dead, Buttergun.

Sleazenation, it was only a hyped episode because of the marketing, in terms of the narrative it was something that kicked the storyline into the next phase, and was thus pretty successful.

Personally, I'd love to see Hurley get killed off. He's my least favorite regular by far.

In mechanical terms I'd have to agree the episode succeed in reuniting most of our survivor groups in preparation for the narrative to shift its focus.

Outside of that, I'm a bit confused, possibly because I'm following this as it is broadcast in the US and my awareness of such matters as the sweeps derrives mainly from wikipedia...

I thought this episode got held back a couple of weeks to fit into the sweeps and was thus designed to as a jumping on point... or aren't such things not so finely planned? Why exactly did ABC start running the season if they knew they were going to have to shove in re-runs to get a particular episode to air when they wanted it?

I realize Shannon's dead...but see, I have been jaded from watching Abrams' past creation Alias, for its first three and half seasons (gave up midway through Season 4). As you probably know, Alias is notorious for killing off characters, only for them to reappear in the next episode. "Your mother's dead, Sydney! ... Oh wait, she's still alive!" Abrams is unable to let his characters go, therefore even when Boone died, I suspected the islanders would find a "resurrection machine" down the hatch, to bring him back to life with.

I'd rather see Charlie go than Hurley. But of course, Anna Lucia (aka FTLB) more than anyone else. KILL HER!

(Though I did laugh out loud at her: "Shhhhhhhhhhshut up!" command to Michael and Jin. You don't often hear someone so capably combine a "shh" sound with a straight-up "shut up." Plus, I like it that she killed off the vapid Shannon.)
