To all Canadian and American viewers:

The season 2 premiere is tonight on ABC.

For those you who didn't know.

Lets start placing bets on what is in that damn hatch.

Aertho
17:42 / 21.09.05
What's in the hatch?

1. Boone

2. a stage set

3. Season 1

4. another hatch

I wouldn't do that, Oddman. The secret is pretty much out for anyone who wants it.

I'd like it to lead to some kind of cavernous subterranean base that is not all it seems. I just want it to be expansive, vast and ominous with a long panning shot into the gloom. Miles and miles of either amazingly intricate or extremely clinical architecture. I want everyone watching to gasp collectively for a few seconds of sheer awe.
But frankly anything that leads to more mystery and adds another dimension to the island will suffice.

Benjamin, is it revealed in tonight's episode or a future episode?

I don't want to know what it is until they show it, but just curious about the timing.

You'll know tonight. But they'll be "explaining it" in Episode III.

so...I thought this episode was pretty fantastic, and I enjoyed the hatch stuff immensely.

Should make for an exciting season...this adds a whole new and weird angle to the show.

Somebody tell me about Tour de Stads and that song playing in the Truman Show Control Room.

There ain't no way shows like Invasion, Surface, or Threshold is gonna beat my Lost.

Was Walt talking backwards? Or is that too Twin Peaksy?

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
01:38 / 22.09.05
Nah, he was whispering backwards. Much fucking creepier.

The one problem was that it tried to cover too many people in a one-character-flashback episode. Or maybe it didn't. I dunno. It felt a little off, but probably because it's been built up in my head for months. I shouldn't have spoiled myself, clearly. But I LOVED the hatch. The second he hit that domed area I was like YES, do I ever love the hatch.

Great stuff.

i just particularly loved the entire opening sequence. the echo-of-the-pilot-eye-opening first shot, and the game they played with the viewer about where exactly this guy was who was doing all this normal day to day stuff. Then the boom. That was Black Rock classic.

Fucking Desmond! I did a google search on the name (since everything means something on this show.) I got two meanings 1) From south Munster 2) Gracious protector. I loved the beginning and all the stuff with Jack at the hospital. What a cool episode. Can’t wait for next week.

Has anyone here noticed how apparently badly done was the CGI smoke in the Finale when Kate threw the dynamite down the hole to save Locke? I think this was done on purpose, meant to appear unreal.

I watched it in slow motion on my VCR and there are three distinct views of the “smoke.”

First shot, it pretty much looks like smoke.

Second shot, it coalesces and forms what look like two “eyes” -- even with pupils! Eyes! But you can only really catch this in slo mo ‘cause it goes by so quick.

Third shot, the small cloud zips away into the jungle, more like it’s traveling or directed, than real smoke just dissipating; acting a lot like that earlier smokey-thing that Jack and Kate saw whiz by.

Now, I don’t really think those were meant to be biological “eyes,” but more symbolic of intelligence: My theory is that the smoke is nano technology. In the first episode of season two, Locke mentions to Kate about the “black smoke” that was dragging him.... Maybe the dynamite blew off a piece of the Nano-monster....? It seemed to emit a shriek.

So, nanos: Is that what the polar bear and the “ghost” of Jack’s dad were? Is it a Nano monster? What do you folks think?

This is the logo on Desmond's jumpsuit, and his medicine cabinet, and the computer, and several places along the walls of the hatch. It's tough to make out, but some of our brighter minds have discerned that the company (as this is surely a logo) is called Dharma.

"Dharma is a cosmic principle that is difficult, if not impossible, to define. Our Dharma is our true place in the cosmic process: in time, in space, in awareness, in thought, deed and desire. The eternal principle of Dharma determines the harmonious functions of the cosmic machine. In order that we fulfil our role in the divine play we must behave within our Dharma. That is, we ought to do the right thing, at the right time, In the right way, and for the right reason. By this we attain balance. To establish balance within ourselves ensures our own welfare and the welfare of society. And opens the path prepared for us by the divine."

You can also see, in the center of what is a recreation of the I Ching circle, a swan. I don't think it's too far of a stretch to connect the dots thusly:

Desmond is a representative of a group that turns spiritual "ugly ducklings" into "swans". And there you have it, folks, the key to the entire series.

Well that was great, wasn't sure how the first episode would turn out thought maybe they would tease a little more but it looks like we're right into it with weird Scottish guys to boot.

Possible spoilers below and I ramble on about what I think might be happening......

Do you think we should start a new thread for the new season, because already there's lots of speculation about what's going on and it was fun the last time.

Still lots of stuff around about Genetic copies and nanotech. I like the copy idea I remembering thinking that one of the pirate characters on the boat looked a lot like Shannon.

So Quarantine was written on the inside of the hatch and Desmond injects himself every morning, looks like he might be protecting himself from the island. Which falls in with the theory that I read elsewhere that the bright light maybe ultraviolet used to sterilize people or the area. Would also explain why shoes were left outside.

Also read something that would be very clever if it turns out to be true, Desmond says he's training for a race around the world which could mean of course that he's training for a Race around the world...

Yay LOST.

Jeez, I had no idea you could even see a logo on that jumpsuit in the episode. I can't actually remember seeing anything like that.

I like the theory, though. There is one thing I can't reconcile with it, though: The death of a lot of people on the plane.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

I only noticed it after BTing the episode. Then I found some hot leads at The Fuselage and then, whammo.

I thought the race was just Dharma's "Real World" excuse for him to keep tabs on the rest of the future lostaways.

Oh, and get this, they blurred out the DC 1,000,000 cover on the Lost Recap Special.

Oh, and get this (did someone already mention this?) the other accident victim? Who died? Mr. Rutherford? As in, Shannon's dad?

Yeah.

Aertho
13:20 / 22.09.05
The death of a lot of people on the plane.

Well, the burned ones might actually be dead, but I doubt anybody underground is going to be dead for the entirety of the series.

NANOS!

Would explain the miracles, definitely.

And there's a high powered superconducter/particle accelerater under the island too. I think the island is a time machine... only instead of moving from point to point, time flows backward. Wasn't there some mention of the tides being wrong? And if time is backward, the sun would rise in the west... making them even more lost.

Could we get an I Ching expert from Temple to examine and report hir thinking regarding the "Dharma" logo?

What most impressed me about last night's great episode was how such little time was wasted. I think Lost is the best show on TV (next to 24), but one thing I'll admit is that -- last year, at least -- they really can take their time on things. I mean, what was it, 10 episodes before they even opened that hatch? I figured it would take them at least half this season to find anything down there...like they'd go down the tunnel, find another tunnel, find a long dark corridor, find another tunnel, etc. But instead, in one episode we've found out who/what's down there, and it's the last thing I expected.

There was a scene last night where Lock said "I'm tired of waiting." Hopefully that also refers to the producers themselves -- I love the backstories for these characters, but the producers/writers have really stretched themselves thin on the "island mystery" portion of the show. ESPECIALLY when you consider producer Abrams (famous for his inability to actually see stories/characters through to their end -- ie "Alias") claimed shortly after the series premiere last year that they'd "gone too far" and "jumped the shark" by introducing a monster on the island. (Which is why the thing that ate the airplane pilot, etc, pretty much disappeared soon thereafter.)

Also wanted to mention, even though I like this Dharma Company theory, that I've long ago decided all of the "fan theories" about this show are bullshit. It's seemed obvious from the start that the producers/writers are making this up as they go along. And besides, the sooner they solve these mysteries, the sooner the show will loose its suspenseful edge, and the sooner it will come to an end. Just look at the quick fate Twin Peaks suffered after the Laura Palmer murder was solved.

Chad: I agree with you about the Genetic Mirror thing sounding like fanwank. It's just too perfect.

BUT...it does seem to match up with the the official website script page in the first link I posted.

Honestly, to start the new season, I think it would have been cool to show the other survivors for the first bit of season 2. But that would have irritated everyone in the world and the show would die. First episode of season 2 was really enjoyable, but I always get pissed off when you introduce a new character into the show in a flashback, and then WHAM! He's a huge part of the story. It just feels like it wasn't planned. All in all though, great ep, and still my favorite show of all time ever. And Desmond reminded me of Morrison for a little bit.

And this race...who was he racing?

He was just racing around the world as a cloud of nanomachines.

also curious: desmond's apartment is different from the first time we see it and the next time we see it, right?

no bunkbeds, no desk, walls are different, no nice sink, no record player (but a reel to reel?).

Keith, like a scientist

i guess it could be different sections of a larger complex, but i didn't see that many other routes or tunnels beyond what Jack explored...

overall, it just felt very different...dunno, the whole Desmond thing has really bent this show into a direction i wasn't expecting, but am quite intrigued by.

Dude - the reel-to-reel isn't a tape player - it's part of a computer; a 1970s/1980s computer (which fits in with the whole 16 yeaqrs ago-ness of it all)

As for this series taking a sudden turn - isn't it par for the course - this is the creator of alias a show with so many polt twists that the casual watcher couldn't follow who was loyal to who week by week...

Tim Tempest
23:18 / 22.09.05
That's exactly why I could never get into Alias. I like it alot, great concept, super hottie fronting it, but I could never seem to find a regular schedule where I could watch it, and I just have trouble jumping into stories halfway through.

But Desmond...I like it and all...I just wish they had hinted at him last season.

I like to think that they had a plan for Lost since the beginning...but they really are making it up as we watch it, aren't they?

Which again, adds to its appeal, because NO ONE knows what's gonna happen.

sleaze, yeah, sorry about that...reading Lost forums did my head in today.

there is so much crap with only a few kernels of good.

good = such as Desmond types in the bad numbers at the beginning. The numbers are on the bottle of medicine he injects and the number 108 (bad numbers added up) is on the wall painting.

Fucking Randy, Locke's asshole manager will be appearing in 2.5 "Everybody Hates Hurley". How sick is that? I'm going to be honest here and admit that it's quite clear at this point that the TPTB on this show are totally making this up as they go along, throwing most of this shit onto the wall because it sounds cool. ("Hey, we all know Randy's like the total highlight of Season One, wouldn't it be cool to bring him back just to order some fried chicken from Hurley?") Fucking Jin's flashback? It's going to have a "beatnik roommate" and some kind of nemesis (rich & successful to his poor & not) named (not kidding) Jae fucking Lee.

They weren't even sure (apparently) until a few weeks ago whether the kid who plays Walt was going to come back or move to Alias (as a different character, of course). If you've seen the DVD extras, it's obvious that they do have an overarching multi-season plan, but clearly this is just a broad strokes kind of deal, and they're filling in the details as they go.

So what say you? Are you down with this, or does this make you lose all hope?

Personally, I think it's a pretty exciting way to run a show like this. We have no idea what's going on, they BARELY know what's going on. Absolutely anything can happen, as long as it's cool.

It's certainly sticking to that with the premiere. Desmond? Who the fuck knows what's going on with this guy. Was the hatch reveal in the first two minutes cool? Undeniably.

Does all the stuff that's coming down the pike sound cool? Does to me.
