sounds cool, but I sincerely hope that they at least know some of the ultimate answers. i'm fine with the playing it loose with the details, but if they don't know what the grand unifying concept of the series is, then it's just X-Files/Alias all over again. Season after Season of "cool" mysteries with no payoffs.

In regards to one of the spoilers....

I don't think that the return of Randy is all that far out of left field. We know Locke worked for a box company, and Hurley owned (owns)a box company, so that might make sense.

But "EHH" is timed before Hurles ends up in the psyche ward, so it's probably not business related.

In episode 14, when Walt's looking through his Justice League comic, there's a dome-city right before the polar bear page.

The Randy thing sounds promising if it does indeed have something to do with Hurley's ownership of his company. EHH may jump around, or we could see the reason why Hurley bought the box company—maybe out of spite for Randy from this encounter? Although, I think it was news to Hurley that he owned a box company.

I'm fine with an overarching metaplot with the details being filled in as they go. Arzt had to be a last minute add. They made such an effort to show him in flashbacks after it was almost overcompensatory. And he blowed up goood. So if that is the way last minute details are going to turn out, keep em coming.

Yeah, the shark was definitely monogramed. Looked like the same "Dharma" symbol from inside Desmond's bunker.

So so def.

NEW THEORY OF THE DAY:

So, Desmond goes on this race around the world, he wins it, Long Walk style (that one's just for Keith) Dharma comes up to him and is all like "Okay, you've proved yourself. We need you to do pretty much the most important thing on Earth. We're going to put you on this island. We need you type in these numbers." Etc, etc, "Yeah, but why do I --" "There'll be another guy along soon, just remember the joke I told you!" THUNNNGGGG!!!

God damn it do I love this show.

Although the Mike/Sawyer "argument" was incredibly trite and Mike's flashback was decidedly of the Charlie II (copy salesman), we already knew that, duh, variety.

Everything else was class, with the best cut to black since the black smoke in Exodus Pt. 1.

Keith, like a scientist
01:50 / 29.09.05
The DharmaShark is flipping me out.

I really don't think the "race" was a foot race, etc. It means something else.

Interesting that Desmond doesn't recognize Jack and asks who he is.

What in the world is up with those flipping numbers? Is he keeping something regulated?

He doesn't seem very concerned that the hatch door has been blown wide open, breaking his quarantine.

Agreed: fantastic cut to black. So...are those the rear section survivors?

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
02:01 / 29.09.05
Well, what was Jin saying? Sounded like "Others" to me... ;D

Oh, and my pet theory on the numbers/execute button? Well, everything Jack experienced in the first ep was clearly explained (shoes, music, Kate screaming, etc) except one: the spotlight.

My theory is that when the numbers switch back up to 108.00, the light flashes for a moment and then clicks off.

Tim Tempest
02:24 / 29.09.05
When Desmond heard the beeping, I thought it sounded like Radar to me, so maybe he punches in the numbers to transmit the coordinates of the island, and hopes that someone shows up...or maybe he knows that it will make them crash there...The French Lady's crew went to the island because of a transmission like that. The people on the otherside of the island, I am positive are the other survivors from the back end of the plane. I have a visual theory that I am putting together, so I will post that image later.

And I couldn't get a clear recording of Walt's voice from the season premiere to reverse digitally...so does anyone else want to give it a go? He was talking backwards, 110%. And that stuffed polar bear, very clever.

The shark-beast...the sigil on it's tail...does that have anything to do with protection? It was probably another form of security for the island...The big thing on the island roams on the ground, the black smoke can fly, so it covers the air, and the shark guards the island from the water. They've got all angles covered, unless someone attacks them through time...which won't happen.

But why does the island have all of these 'security systems'?

Piecing together what we see from the previews, though, tells a different story. Ana is also a captive, and she's the only one we can confirm is from the Tail End. I'm assuming she's held captive by the enormous gentleman and his chums, who I'm going to bet a dollar, are the bonafide Others. There's really no way I can figure that the Tail Enders are The Others, and vice versa.

Keith, like a scientist
02:40 / 29.09.05
hmm...well, I think it's less than conclusive that the Others aren't the Tail Enders. But we'll have to see.

Ok: Desmond thinks the world is still there, that everyone is sick. 'Quarantine' is on the inside of the hatch. There is a Security System. Desmond is stocked to last a long time.

What are Dharma's motives? To hide and protect the island from the rest of the world's sickness? Desmond's bunk mate...could be a woman. Clue: the mention of Adam and Eve when finding those skeletons in the cave.

Yup. The first part sounds like "Press the button." Not sure about after that. Listen for yourself here: http://www.foxmod.com/lost/lost.html

You have to scroll down a bit to get to it... oh and there might be spoilers there, I didn't read anything else.

It's Mama Cass singing "Make Your Own Kind of Music." It's been on my ipod all week and I still can't figure out any special significance, other than that it's an upbeat, inspirational song about doing your own thing and how that's "the loneliest kind of lonely."

Theory

Keywords: time-travel, polar bears, shifting tides, reversed compass.

They're in the artic, hundreds/thousands of years into the future. The water level is rising because of super-global-warming. The polar bears are decendants of artic bears, no swimming for their lives involved.

The Hatch is a long-term biosphere project started by someone to repopulate the Earth (hence Desmond's "race around the world" line).

Desmond's song is curious because it's from the late 70s. Which might meen Desmond has, somehow, been there since the 80s.

it seems that the joke that Desmond asked Locke was "What did one snowman say to the other snowman?"

the answer is "freeze."

and I'm reading that Hurley asked the same joke at some point in season one.

Is Hurley "him"?

Wanted to step in with some things:

1. The Mama Cass song ("Make your own music") is from the late '60s, not '70s. I think it's from '69, in fact. As for its significance, there was a great premiere-episode writeup over at Entertainment Weekly which claimed the song was a message from the producers to their fans:

"the tune has multiple meanings, and perhaps one of them is aimed squarely at those who spent the summer clacking on their keyboards about last season's allegedly dissatisfying season finale and demanding hard and fast answers to the mysteries of the Hatch, the Monster, the Others, et. al. The rejoinder from Lost: We make the music, you listen; please, dance with us — but we'll do the leading, thank you very much."

2. Did anyone catch Desmond's line, asking if the world was still out there? You get the feeling the guy was under the impression the world was about to end. And also, for a guy who, according to some fans, is part of a worldwide conspiracy, Desmond sure seemed off his rockers. I suppose living alone for that long would make anyone a little nuts, but Desmond seemed more panicky than outright psychotic. Like he's there to hide from something.

3. Jin clearly said "the others," referring to the beefy B-movie extras who came rampaging out of the jungle foliage. And it looks like they already have the feisty brunette from last season's final episode captive -- the lady who met Jack at the airport. Here's betting she and Sawyer will strike up a romance -- providing future dramatic tension, with a Jack/Kate/Sawyer/New Girl quadrangle.

I don't think Hurley ever used that joke, but a lot of people are hoping he did.

And the punchline I heard was "Do you smell carrots?"

you are correct. the joke was never told by anyone in season 1. i'm never reading another forum again. rumors breed like rabbits for this show.

The best thing about downloading the episode and watching it a day late is coming on here and seeing what you folks have come up with, like the shark which is fuckin cool and something I didn't notice.

Nothing much else to add but great episode and great use of a flashback showing the same scenes from other angles.

As for the song I also have it on my mp3 player (Mama and the Papas greatest hits!) and pretty sure it means something what with the being lonely and nobody else singing along.

Interestingly one of the people shown for next weeks episode being either Other or survivor is Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adebisi from Oz which also had Harold Perrineau Jr. of course....

Shark Logo here by the way -

Best show on TV at the moment....

"The rejoinder from Lost: We make the music, you listen; please, dance with us — but we'll do the leading, thank you very much."

If true, that's lame and a poor understanding of what the song's about. I think the EW writer just decided that hirself.

Similar, I suppose, though I don't know if we should go searching for every octagon that's been in the show. I vaguely remember Hurley having an issue with a "Stop" sign.

I would agree that drawing comparison between the Dharma logo and the ceiling in that shot above seems like a reach, but for the fact that when I watched that episode and saw that shot of the ceiling, I thought it was such a weird, almost sinister angle to show what Michael was doing (opening the box of letters he wrote to Walt) - it seemed strange and out of place and very deliberate.

New Lost fan here, by the way - I devoured the season 1 box set last weekend...

SO jealous of all the new converts who didn't have to suffer through the agonizing wait the rest of us did. And it works so well as one big 24 hour long movie. I can't wait to watch the first few episodes of this season all in one big Disk One chunk.

I'm eagerly watching friend's progress as he makes his way through the S1 Box. "Whoa! Sun knows English! I bet Jin does too!"

So much fun.
