D Terminator XXXIII

10 episodes in and I completely lost my interest in the show.

The characters aren't intriguing enough - there's a blandness to Jack and Kate - and perhaps everyone else -which, given how little real character work they've been asked to perform, is understandable.

Ah, see you missed Hurley's episode and, honestly, he's all I need to get by. Because he is incredible. Actually, it's the second tier that really lifts the show. Sun and Jin are equally fantastic, as is Michael, and they got the best flashback episodes, to be honest. Also, Locke is just fantastic.

I also loved that he just showed up at the funeral, eschewing that all-too frustrating Buffy-ism where characters willfully hid stuff or hid themselves just create artificial (so artificial) tension. He's just all "Yeah, here I am and it was my fault." Not even fifteen minutes into the episode! THANK you!

First part of the last three hours of Season 1. Very emotional episode. Loved the moment between Sawyer and Jack.

SO if that very hi-tech looking hatch is part of the island than it's older than we thought (and not built by any current governments) since there's an old pirate ship (black rock) stuck on the island.

I think the island is some kind of artifact (alien?) that over a long period of time accumulated vegetation. The monster is probably some machine that amplifies thoughts and turns them on what it sees as invaders to ward them off. I think the ship (or artifact) is trying to get itself off this planet and so it called these very specific people on to itself.

Or maybe I’ve just read too much sci-fi?

Imp.

See, this is where you shoulda listened to yer dear friend Chad and read "Sphere" by Michael Crichton.

How good are Sun and Jin? Mm.

Tamayyurt
10:43 / 19.05.05
Ah, I read Sphere when I was in middle school, but that was a ship from the future... I think there's something alien going on here.

Aertho
11:38 / 19.05.05
Aliens that use stamped Earth numbers on protective hulls? Windows on human-sized hatches? Yes, that Sphere ship was from the future, but it went back in time hundreds of years. If this was the gov't with a monster "security system", explain Black Rock.

Tamayyurt
12:01 / 19.05.05
Yeah, I'd forgotten about the number... I got nothing.

Aertho
12:11 / 19.05.05
Well, at least the series is better than that shit movie.

i sort of like the Sphere movie...and I was ho-hum about Crichton's original book...never liked the ending very much...but it worked better in the film, I think. I dunno...

back it up...so what's the thought here? that's it's a big floating time traveling island?

Black Rock certainly surprised me. Wasn't expecting that. I love when writers do things like this...name something that you are sure you have an idea what it will be, then it totally flips into something else.

Keith, like a scientist
12:34 / 19.05.05
and Hurley didn't see the lottery numbers on the hatch??? ARGH!

Tamayyurt
12:59 / 19.05.05
The numbers were small though.

Now, I'm gonna have to rent that movie and look for clues. Also, I remember the creators of the show referencing Stephen King's The Stand.

I think what set me on my 'alien ship' theory was that Walt's comic had something to do with aliens. Do you think Power Rangers is a clue as well?

Aertho
14:20 / 19.05.05
No no no.

The ship from Sphere goes through a black hole just past the solar system and somehow crashlands back to its point of origin(Earth) hundreds of years in the past. In it's cargo hold, it holds a "magical item" that gives human imagination the "power" to effect reality. Think of timesuits, the hand of glory, elements of Memento, and the science behind the Star Trek TNG series finale. Cause and effect are flowing backward.

My theory here is that at one point in the future, a ship or facility made by humans will crack timespace, and drag reality-altering properties out of that crack and unto the world. Kind of like God getting trapped inside hir own creation. The numbers of the ship are universal constants and code probably associated the cracking process. Walt isn't brought to the island becasue off his ability, his ability is his because he will go to the island one day. Cause and effect go backward. I anticipate that he knows things he ought not to, like time isn't structured quite as linearly as the rest.

Also, consider the clues: The polar bears are wrought from a Green Lantern(imagination by willpower) comic. "A Wrinkle in Time" is the book Sawyer will read to Claire's baby to keep it content. Black and White stones, gamepieces. Magic Mirror and Anti-Mirror. Inside and Outside, backward and forward.

This is some heavy shit for ABC. So I don't think I'm absolutely right.

I think the show would be infinitely improved if every now and then they just showed a shot of one of the characters after something really weird has happened, sitting on the beach, and have them say "What the fuck?"

'Cause I know I'd be doing a lot of that if it were me.

I am intrigued by the idea of a security system. Perhaps Ethan and the "others" are also a part of this system. I too think the monster is thought-created, and Locke's refusal to fear it influenced it away from them.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
05:30 / 20.05.05
Chad, that's actually my theory exactly. When I saw The Black Rock I was all, "Oh shit! I might be right!" Fingers crossed!

Aertho

Goddamn Goddamn Goddamn

So the "others" can fly?

01:08 / 26.05.05
Fantastic finale. The flashbacks were filler here, really, but the goodness prevailed.

So, are those guys on the fishing boat the "others?"

Tamayyurt
01:56 / 26.05.05
Yeah, they'd have to be the "others" since that went right for the boy. Who else thinks Walt's going to mind fucks those others good and proper? Also did anybody see that black smoke thing move when they blew up the monster?

Charlie's got junk, Sawyer might be dead, and they're gonna have a Locke problem. Very nice.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

Not only that, but I think the lady who chucked the gasoline...was Danielle's daughter.

Aertho
02:01 / 26.05.05
How do we know she has a daughter?

Tamayyurt
02:18 / 26.05.05
Chad, where did you get the others flying? Did I miss something?

Aertho
02:43 / 26.05.05
Two clues:

No footprints on the beach where the fire with black smoke came from.

The opened-hatch shaft had a ladder that ended, while the shaft kept on going.

I especially like that the monster is living sentient CGI.

so...it was typical Lost goodness, but no actual answers. that was kind of a bad move on their part, i think...gonna turn people off if it starts to look like another X-Files/Alias flying by the seat of our pants thing...

however, it was good.

chad, i'm pretty sure rousseau says Alex is a girl in the episode we first met her.

thank god hurley finally saw the numbers...

and yeah, "flying?"

I had read an some stuff from AICN today:
"Listen to what the French woman says in the third-to-last scene,” Lindelhof tells the Wall Street Journal.
Tonight, Lindelhof tells Ain’t It Cool News, “you will SEE the Monster (at least some of it). And look out for those numbers... especially near the end of the two-hour. They're EVERYWHERE.”

So...French woman in third to last scene. Which scene was that?

And...monster? didn't see anything, right?

and what's this crap about the Lost 'Secret Scene"?!!!

Well, we did get the girl's soccer team, in order of...THE NUMBERS. (No, really, that was so cool.)

But yeah. I loved it, but awful for the show, because people are already pissed.

Keith, like a scientist
12:25 / 26.05.05
i remember the soccer team, but was too stupid to look at the numbers....hahaha. thank the Force for DVR.

Math is for suckers!
00:55 / 28.05.05
That secret scene wasn't really worth seeing. It was about 40 seconds of Charlie and Claire talking about how Charlie thought Rousseau was crazy and how Claire hadn't named the baby yet because she was afraid something would happen to it. I'm pretty sure it happened before everyone left for the Black Rock, although I'm not entirely sure. Glad I didn't wake up at 7 in the morning to see it though.

Secret scenes? There's a secret TRAILER for Season Two, baby! The GMA scene is SO Thursday Morning!

Just go poke around that Seating Chart, maybe click on some of those row numbers, any of 'em that catch your eye...in a particular order. You know. See what happens.

Speaking of naming the baby... Aaron- Hebrew, Arabic; meaning shining light, high mountain, messenger

Aertho
05:29 / 28.05.05
Aaron is also the speaking half of the Moses and Aaron duo - the leaders who lead the Israelites out of Egypt and slavery in the holy book called Exodus. I'm assuming Walt's the Moses-type dude, seeing as how he brings on plagues of polar bears.

Foust is SO authentic
16:03 / 28.05.05
The content of the Oceanic Airlines flight seems to refute the idea that the Lost bunch will get off the island only to discover the world has been deserted, yes? A company whose employees have all disappeared can hardly announce its own closure.

Tamayyurt
16:15 / 28.05.05
The Lost "universe" is the same as the Alias "universe" so the world has not been deserted.

Aertho
18:15 / 28.05.05
It is? Wild.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

I heard JJ said because Ol' Terry "Locke" O'Quinn is in both, there's no way they could ever cross over. (Phew!)
