Yotsuba & Benjamin!
21:34 / 18.02.05
Yeah, absolutely. Hope I didn't come off like a douche. It's all there for anyone who wants it. I personally can't wait for his episode, but I'm dreading future developments as E's rumormonger, when discussing the Big Death in the Season Finale said it would be one of "the biggest characters" (her italics, not mine) and that it would be emotionally devestating. A Hurleyless Island is not something I'd look forward to.

Sorry I was a little bit out of it when I posted that, possibly is a little too spoilerish. As for Hurley agreed about looking forward to his episode apparently there's a break of 6 weeks after it though.

On a purely cynical level I think the producers would want to keep Hurley so they can show him loose a hell of a lot of weight, I'm not sure if that has been done on a TV show (although it was been done on Castaway).

14:17 / 19.02.05
JJ said in an interview that they will not be asking Jorge Garcia to lose any weight. He said there's plenty of food on the island so there's no reason for him to. Seemed like a bit of a cop-out to me....

Yotsuba & Benjamin!

Or, maybe it's not something they need to worry about as he's a few hours away from being boar chow. God, I hope he does not die. Dude.

I guess it would be very Lord of the Flies of them to kill Piggie....

Was that Hurley on TV when Jin went to go rough up that guy? I couldn't really tell.

Man, and the way his CD play just gave out like that at the end... that shit was like an omen. I do hope he survives though. I like him.

20:37 / 24.02.05
I'll go back and check the TV now, just finished watching it. That was a really nice touch with the CD player, I was just thinking we're lucky he has that mixed CD with inspirational sunrise/sunset music.

Just checked and yeah it's him getting into a car, if I only I could speak Korean I could work out what they were saying. I bet the Lost message board has a translation.

Looks like I could be right with the spoilers, apologies!

Bear
20:51 / 24.02.05
No translation, although someone did note if it was just the lottery it would have to be a whole lot of money to be shown in another country right?

I thought that episode was one of the best yet. Now that the characters have been developed, we can get a lot more problems coming out of their interactions rather than arbitrarily imposed things. Most successful long run series really rely on character issues to drive them, rather than plot, so it's good to see the series transitioning. And, I didn't see the twist with Walt coming, I'd imagine this is some extension of his powers rather than traditional fire production.

Aertho
21:25 / 24.02.05
So Scarlet Walt had to summon fire when there's signal bonfires all over the beach? I don't think Walt has any clue he has "powers".

Bear
09:36 / 25.02.05
Yeah I have to agree with Chad I don't there was any fire from the eyes action going on and I thought it would be Walt due to him nearly saying something before Michael went apeshit.

Agree that the episode was great though, I was reading an interview with one of the producers who said that things are going to have to move slower than they wanted because the ratings are so good they're going to have to make more episodes and drag the story out - Apparently Steven King has complained that things are moving too slow...

Yoon-jin Kim rocks doesn't she, probably the best actor on the show.

Anyone else think that the show is doing things you wouldn't normally see on such a popular show, strong non-American characters, a large guy where weight isn't ever mentioned and now a relationship between an American woman and an Iraqi man. Good stuff.

PatrickMM
19:21 / 25.02.05
I suppose it's true that just lighting the thing on fire would be easier, but I wouldn't rule out some kind of psychic influence.

I've seen a lot of people complaining that it's taking too long to 'get answers,' but I feel like that's completley missing the point of the show. It's really a character drama, using the island as mcguffin and to set up a variety of situations to strain character relations. I guess I'm curious about what the deal is with the island, but I'm more interested in finding out what's up with the characters than what exactly the monster is or stuff like that.

I'd compare it to Buffy, in that you do care about her fight with evil, but you're really more concerned with what's going on with the characters.

Bear
09:27 / 28.02.05
I agree I think, although I do sometimes feel the writers have no idea what they're going to do and wait to see the reaction from the fans...

I was thinking at the weekend that they'll do an episode from the dogs point of view, tell his back story...a lot of people still think there's something going out with him and with Locke telling the story of the stray coming to stay with him it might be true.

So Hurley on Wednesday and then a break of around 5 weeks.

I hope they handle the character dieing like the Simpson's and have lots of little teases that it'll be each of the characters during the episode.

Aertho
01:09 / 03.03.05
Poor Hurley!

He owns the boxmaking company that Locke worked at

Who wants to play magickal significance?

4? Four elements, corners, holon quadrants

8? Infinity upright

15?

16? Four Squared

23? Magic number! Michael Jordan

42? Hitchhiker's Guide Meaning of Existence

I'm starting to love not knowing what the hell going on. Another good episode although a little over the top in places (priest being struck by lightning, at least we didn't see it).

So from looking at the lost message board and weeding out the crap to leave some interesting ideas... Possible Spoilers... Just in case any of this turns out to be true.....

Tarot Card theory - the numbers relate to Tarot Cards, i.e. 16 - the Tower. I doubt it'll be this, you wouldn't get that much occult on a prime time show right?

The numbers 4,8,15,16,23,& 42 are atomic numbers. Their corresponding elements are Beryllium(Be), Oxygen(O), Phosphorus(P), Vanadium(V), and Molybdenum(Mo). - the oxygen, phosphorus, and sulphur are all useful when one needs to create fire, or an explosion of some kind. The remaining elements, beryllium, vanadium, and molybdenum all poses unique qualities that make them useful for nuclear applications.

Sawyer was reading A Wrinkle In Time - children's book about ripping through space and time and arrive on another planet and fighting an evil alien brain.

4,8,15,16,23,42

4) The 4 year theory.
8) 8 people died in the shoe factory
8&15) 815 was the plane’s flight number; 815 was also Kate's bank box number
16) Danielle had been on the island for 16 years; the lottery was a 16 week rollover.
23) 23A was Jack’s seat number on the plane; the reward to turn in Kate was $23,000
42) 42 survivors left
Add them all up and you get 108, the number of people on the flight.

Meh that's enough, so what's up with Locke - evil/good what do you reckon?

No new episode for 6 weeks..oh no!

Keith, like a scientist
15:20 / 04.03.05
i've been reading all this number theory stuff...and my gut feeling is the numbers have no significance whatsoever...they are just calling card...

theory: the hatch with the numbers on it is the reason why people were broadcasting those numbers...it made them insane...whatever's inside it made them flip out.

anyway...just my gut feeling...

interesting episode, nonetheless...

17:40 / 04.03.05
bearo, where do you go for LOST spoilers and discussion?

Bear
18:16 / 04.03.05
Oh yeah the numbers could mean nothing at all, but it's kinda fun reading the theories, some of them are even stranger, someone has turned them into binary and shown that they match up to the Connect4 game in the hospital. There's a lot of Pandaros box stuff going around at the moment to.

Chad, I mainly look on the official site, just search for ABC lost but you have to ignore every third topic, being OMG they are all dead!!

TV Tome also has a message board I found today.

Yeah I imagine the door belonged to a science/goverment party and the number was the code name, that's why they were broadcasting it as a distress signal.

Also I think there might be a good chance that Hurleys shoe factory fire might be related to Kate.

Spoiler again, possibly maybe not - A nice theory I heard today is that they are in some sort of 4 year loop but only Locke at the moment has worked this out, a large Groundhog day if you will. That's why he seems to know the right things to say to people. I also got the feeling in the latest episode that he knew it was Claires birthday.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
18:29 / 04.03.05
Oh man, I am liking that loop theory. But then again, there's been a lot of those going around, right Keith?

Rock this, though. The doomed Aussie's name was Toomey. King fans represent and remember that there was a Toomey on the doomed flight in "The Langoliers", which, naturally, focused on its own wrinkle in time, where anyone lucky enough to have been sleeping on the flight found themselves in a dead past literally being eaten away by the present. Is this the monster? Is the tide the present eating away at the island? If they pull some loop type shit I will personally love the fuck out of it and Messers Lindelhof and Abrams will most assuredly be vilified by 97% of the show's fanbase.

It gets interesting when you really track back the numbers, which simulataneously caused Rousseau and Hurley's arrival at the island (they caused the signal that Rousseau's team followed and they also caused Toomey's luck, causing that guy's craziness, causing Hurley to win the lotto).

Or maybe it's just Agent Graves in the hatch, pulling strings. We've already got the briefcase with a gun in it.

Keith, like a scientist
22:42 / 04.03.05
haha, birdie, yeah, loop theories are prevalent this past year!

i wouldn't be surprised that this is some sort of Pandora's box story... but that Pandora's box is some sort of government experiment thing gone awry (that's always a good fall back plotline on TV shows).

have we worked out the significance of the Locke and Rousseau names yet? I remember reading the creators saying that the names are meaningful... I know the theory points to John Locke, the economist and philosopher...but what if it's more mundane? What if the extra "e" is a red herring, and his name symbolizes some sort of LOCK? the lock to pandora's box??!!?!? OMG! WTF! BRB! LOL!

um...anyway... seriously...any substance to the Locke = Lock idea?

Bear
07:10 / 05.03.05
I like that actually, the lock idea and I haven't seen it mentioned on the official board go post they'll get all excited!

Yeah apparently every name is important so we could have -

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

"Rousseau first attracted wide-spread attention with his prize-winning essay Discours sur les Sciences et les Arts (Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts) (1750), in which he decried the harmful effects of modern civilization. Pursuit of the arts and sciences, Rousseau argued, merely promotes idleness, and the resulting political inequality encourages alienation." - OMG ALIEN NATION!! :P

Or possibly the painter Henri Rousseau with his painting The Dream, or his painting of a Tiger in a jungle (if it was a polar bear maybe)

We also know that Hurley is called Hugo, so Victor Hugo perhaps "A recurring theme in Hugo's work is humanity's ceaceless combat with evil. He eloquently stated the problems of his century and the great eternal human questions."

Also I found this quite fun -

(Ripped from the official site)

Frank Duckett is killed by Sawyer :

In Hamlet when Hamlet killed Polonius, he said "Dead! Dead for a Ducat!"

The interesting part is Sawyer (Hamlet) killed Duckett (Polonius, hidden behind a curtain) because he believed him to be his father's killer, the real Sawyer (the King).

Of course we're all probably giving the writers much more credit than they deserve.. that's acutally a cool theory I saw that the writers are trying to say that all the things that are happening are a coincedance but if you look deep enough you will see that everything is connected someway and they are letting the fans prove this

David Fury has left Lost... who else is worried?

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
23:45 / 05.04.05
Long as Damon "I Love Stephen King So Much I Put The Most Obscure Dark Tower Reference In Television History In My Show" Lindelhof is still on board...I'm good.

Upon further examination of IMDB (hm hm hm "Numbers" hm hm hm "Walkabout" hm hm hm "Special") yeah, okay, I'm worried.

But, you know, not that worried. We...we still got...Lindelof. And hey, Drew Goddard! "Talking To Dead People" Drew Goddard! Oh yeah. We're good.

And plus if he left Lost (You know, LOST) he's probably gotten a deal for his own show. So, everyone wins!

Maybe it's just the break between episodes, but I'm starting to get a bit annoyed by the show. I feel like all the second episodes for each character have had just pointless flashbacks that didn't really develop anything. It's basically we see another awful event that happened to the character, and don't really learn anything new. I'm much more interested in what's happening on the island, and considering the fact that they only have time to show about four people per week, there's no reason to not drop the flashbacks and just show the island exclusively.

Also, I feel like there just isn't enough relationship stuff on the show. There's been very little character change, and I feel like there's a lot of potential for interesting relationships to develop, and yet the only real tension we've seen is between Sun and Jin. Their two episodes were the best of the series because there were actual stakes. It's the opposite of what most people say about shows, but Lost really needs to get more soap opera, in the sense that the primary conflicts are character based rather than plot based.

Totally agree the only reason I think I watch is because I want to know what the hell is going on - I've been reading lots of new interesting theories but I wont bother to post them as it's nearing the end of the season.

Tomorrows is going to be huge though I reckon.

Yeah, David Fury leaving is very bad news for Lost, especially since J.J. will have his hands full with Alias, Lost and his new bounty hunter show.

Fury'll be working on Tim Minear's new show "The Inside," which sounds a bit like 21 Jumpstreet: The Next Generation. Despite that teamup, I'm not excited for it.

He'll also be executive producing the next season of 24.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
03:10 / 07.04.05
I'm not too worried about J.J. overextending himself, as a cursory glance at Alias makes it pretty clear that it's probably the other co-producer that's doing most of the legwork as far as Lost's inherent awesomeness.

Keep in mind is was only the most cursory of glances. But take a peek at the IMDB writing credits and there's one Co-Producer there who's writing a bit more than the other.

Just saying.

I say bullshit. The dead will rise one by one from the light-in-the-hatch. And have amnesia.

And Jack needs a foot in the groin the next time he "shuts out" when people ask him to talk. I'm getting sick of his automatic brick wall shit. Doesn't he realize she's already Sawyer's girl? Foolish. Foolish.

Poor pretty Boone. I got a little teared up when Jack gave Shannon the news.

Where do you suppose Locke is? Did the hatch open up after it lit up? Why did he hide the truth about how Boone was injured?

Will Jack and Locke really have a lasting falling out? Or will it all be neatly resolved? I'm hoping Jack and Locke stay mad and the survivors split into two tribes...
