Yeah that was ok, I think it might be loosing me a little but I'll stick with it -

From this bio it does sound a lot like Locke and could tie into the theory that they've been put there by the government/aliends -

"John Locke (b. 1632, d. 1704) was a British philosopher, Oxford academic and medical researcher, whose association with Anthony Ashley Cooper (later the First Earl of Shaftesbury) led him to become successively a government official charged with collecting information about trade and colonies, economic writer, opposition political activist, and finally a revolutionary whose cause ultimately triumphed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Much of Locke's work is characterized by opposition to authoritarianism. This opposition is both on the level of the individual person and on the level of institutions such as government and church. For the individual, Locke wants each of us to use reason to search after truth rather than simply accept the opinion of authorities or be subject to superstition. He wants us to proportion assent to propositions to the evidence for them. On the level of institutions it becomes important to distinguish the legitimate from the illegitimate functions of institutions and to make the corresponding distinction for the uses of force by these institutions. The positive side of Locke's anti-authoritarianism is that he believes that using reason to try to grasp the truth, and determining the legitimate functions of institutions will optimize human flourishing for the individual and society both in respect to its material and spiritual welfare. This in turn, amounts to following natural law and the fulfillment of the divine purpose for humanity. Locke's monumental An Essay Concerning Human Understanding concerns itself with determining the limits of human understanding in respect to God, the self, natural kinds and artifacts, as well as a variety of different kinds of ideas. It thus tells us in some detail what one can legitimately claim to know and what one cannot. Locke also wrote a variety of important political, religious and educational works including the Two Treatises of Civil Government, the Letters Concerning Toleration, The Reasonableness of Christianity and Some Thoughts Concerning Education."

Yay, Delenn! Delenn!

Thought this was quite an interesting episode...the tantalizing hints put forth by Rousseau seemed to suggest more and more about what is happening on the island.

Who is "them"?

Double yay for Delenn! It took me waaay too long to remember who that actress was.

It sounded like there was a virus on the island, or something.

Yes, a virus called insanity!!!!

No, really. Do you really think there's some sort of infection on that island or was she just nuts? I mean, the whispering voices.. what's up with that?

03:16 / 19.11.04
It seemed to be more that she's been alone for sixteen years, hence the virus of insanity. I actually love that idea, and think it would have huge potential to be developed as the series goes on. Things could get more and more surreal as all the characters begin to lose touch with the outside world. I don't know if that's the direction they'd go, but it's got a ton of potential.

I'm a bit torn on introducing a character who wasn't from the crash so early in the series. I've seen people complaining we had no answers about the island yet, but I like it better that way. This is no X-Files where we're in the sixth season and have no answer, ten episodes in, we've got to keep the mysteries. This Alex character sounds like he has some potential, and the golf course bit made up for almost all the problems in this episode.

One thing I loved was the casually negligent fathering by Michael. This is a guy who clearly isn't used to being a father, so it makes sense he would let his kid wander off. It's not something you'd usually see on TV, without an explicit comment that it was wrong, but here it just happened, he enjoyed the golf, and the kid used a knife. Good stuff.

Ah, dear sweet Alex.

Did you notice she didn't call Alex her "son" or even her "daughter"? She said "Alex is my child."

So I figure Alex could be a girl. And/or Alex could be the monster.

That would also fit with her terse response "There's no such thing as monsters!"

I think Alex is something she and her fellow scientists created and unleashed on the island.

But I have no idea what form Alex takes. The best I can come up with is Alex is a disembodied sentient airborn virus that can possess people (i.e. Locke and the rest of Danielle's crew). But that's too crazy for primetime, right?

one thing to remember about the voices is that saayid heard the voices, as well...

Gridley, did you see the first few episodes? Whatever the monster is, it can lift a man and deposit his mutilated corpse in a tree, and storm through the forest smashing trees down.

Good episode, every week they give you a little more but leave you with many more questions.

So what kind of scientist is she? She could speak French, Spanish, English and a bit of German I think.

Black rock, they do seem to be playing up the duality of the island.

She seemed to know about the bears, viruses - too much!

And two weeks before another episode

Foust, Alex could have been possessing a gorilla or multiple gorillas for pulling the pilot out. And an elephant for trampling trees..

Mind you, I'd also be happy to see Alex turn out to be a fetching young savage jungle girl....

I've just jumped on board with this and have watched the first nine episodes almost back to back.
I've no idea how it plays out having to wait a week (or 2) between each show but certainly watching them all over a 2 day period really worked for me.
As has been said already it is very cheesy in places but I really like that, in the same way that Alias is often cheesy too but it works on a simple fun level.
I don't particularly care for any of the characters yet but I can't wait to see what's gonna happen next.
And I just love the way we haven't seen the 'monster' yet - whilst I'm itching to see what it turns out to be, whatever it is, I can't help thinking it will be a letdown compared to not actually knowing.

In the meantime though, let the good times roll.

Actually, I'd forgotten about the monster already. I guess that's what happens when you see each episode a week apart.

18:09 / 22.11.04
Yeah, the monster is so four episodes ago. I'm hooked on this show, but compared to the other three or four shows I'm hooked on, it's certainly the bottom of the barrel. But still good, naturally.

I think it's just because I want desperately to know what in the hell is going on. Once I find out, I could very well be disappointed.

Loved the whole bit with the psychic. I'm starting to get a very Stephen King feel from this show.

Ethan Rom... so is this the mysterious Alex? Probably. Any guesses on the meaning behind the name? Also got this from aintitcool, "Ethan Rom is "other man" if you rearrange the letters."

gridley
13:26 / 02.12.04
Yeah, that was probably my favorite episode so far. Good, good stuff. And the previews look extremely promising.

Yeah, chances seem likely that Ethan is Alex. I like the anagram theory. You can also get the word "another" out of his name, which might be relevant since the psychic said "Your baby must not be raised by another!"

I so love the idea of the psychic intentionally putting her on the doomed flight. I'm just still working out ulterior his motives are. Did he want her and the baby to die? Did he want them stranded so that she would have to raise the baby? Did he just want the baby imprisoned away from the rest of humanity? Or was he (gasp) delivering the baby to the powers that rule the Island?

Aertho
14:12 / 02.12.04
No, I think the baby will be able to harness the island in a way that the preprogrammed, ie civilized, humans can't. Blurry? Formless? Her "goodness" will anchor the baby? Of course a civilized psychic is going to be afraid of un-emic reality. A baby won't be. I got a wacky feeling this island is going to be a bit like Sphere.

Did he want them stranded so that she would have to raise the baby? Or was he (gasp) delivering the baby to the powers that rule the Island?

I'm torn between these two. The first one seems to fit the urgency with which he was pleading with her. But then, he's a psychic and so didn't he know he was playing stork to Ethalex?

I got a wacky feeling this island is going to be a bit like Sphere.

An alien ship/human ship from the future? That would actually be all kinds of cool.

I meant that there was some object on the island that was "infecting" the inhabitants of the island with the ability to manifest their imagination in reality. Very very World Card, Temple kids. Hence the polar bear, "beautiful" monster, wheel-less Locke, and dead dad walking.

Imp, await a PM I still luv ya bro

Okay, no new Lost for a while (at least until after the start of Alias).

Spoilers ahead!

How crazy was the shot of Charlie hanging! I thought for sure he was dead. (Cause he’s the only one with a movie career to go back to.) But then I remember how the kid kept bending probability in his favor with the dice (and the Polar Bear) and I figured Jack wanted this so bad that he’d bring Charlie back with sheer force of will.

Locke and Boon? Do you think the island is man made? Or at least some kinda structure under it?

I like that Sawyer called the kid (Walter is it?) Tattoo thought of Fantasy Island when the show first started.

15:40 / 09.12.04
That was a pretty good episode, but I think it would have been cool to see a show break "the rules" and kill off a lead character, as they had intended to do with Jack in the first episode.

Next week's TV guide has this little tidbit: "What's in a Name? So the Frenchwoman with the 16-year-long distress signal is alive and living on the island and she's named Danielle Roussea. Is her surname a nod to 18th century philospher Jean-Jacques Rousseau? 'That's exactly who we named her after' admits Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof. Makes sense. Rousseau believed in the noble savage, the idea that humans were good and equal in the state of nature but were corrupted by property, science, and commerce. Adss Lindelof, 'Every single name on the show has purpose and meaning' But of course"

This obviously backs up the talk upthread about Locke, but it also makes me wonder if perhaps Etham Rom is actually a Spaceknight!

I loved the episode, but couldn't help but feel a twinge of regret when Charlie wasn't actually dead. I was getting all ready to feel blown away and shocked.

That climax of the hanging/ressurection scene was painful. The way Kate went back and forth and just poured tears and those heavy gasps of grief... I was sure TV had finally gone to the edge and killed him off. But like Imp said, Jakc brought him back through force of will. I catully used that phrase when me and the guys were discussing the episode over lunch.

So we have "Jack" of all trades... "Locke" a philosopher, "Rousseau" a philosopher, anybody up for a name association game?

Kate?
Sawyer = Tom Sawyer?
Charlie ?
Claire = ?
Boone = ?
Hurley = ?

And who names kids Walter nowadays? Maybe Walt Disney, creator of Fantasyland?

I'm very drunk but I really like the epside - I want to know what the metal was!

I love the name theory above me and I love the show is still playing with us I think we must be half way through right?

02:37 / 10.12.04
Jack's last name is Shepherd (i.e. got everyone moving, got them to the safety of the caves)

Charlie's last name is Pace (not sure what to make of it) he couldn't keep up with his brother pace? now he can't keep up with the pace of the other islanders?)

Hurley's last name is Reyes (Close to words in a couple languages that mean "king" I think; he wouldn't be a bad leader)

gridley
02:52 / 10.12.04
My latest theory: The island is a floating metal box covered in nanomachines that create all the land and animals and vegetation and that repair broken people like Locke and Charlie.

Tamayyurt
03:19 / 10.12.04
Reyes is a common Spanish last name literally meaning "Kings".

And about the metallic nature of the island:

I got a wacky feeling this island is going to be a bit like Sphere.

An alien ship/human ship from the future? That would actually be all kinds of cool.

It could still be a ship that crash landed so long ago that appears to be an island. But this is so farfetched that I’m sure it’s nothing of the sort. Also we don’t know how large the metal object is… it could only be the size of a crate or something.

Also I just looked up the name Sayid... it means Leader.

So we have:

Sayid = Leader

Jack Sheperd = Leader

Hurley Reyes = King

I also did checks on Walt,Jin and Sun:

Sun = Goodness (in Korean)

Jin = Truth, Gold, Treasure (in Korean)

Walter = powerful warrior, ruler of an amry

Michael = powerful warrior angel, ruler of an army

What is Michael and Walt's last name?

Mi

Oddly, Hugo Reyes is the name of one of the progammers who made the Tekken games.

12:43 / 13.12.04
Hugo also wrote The Laughing Man, one of the initial influences in the creation of The Joker. I don't that means anything, but...

Ethan Rom brings to mind "Ethan Frome," which I've never read, so I don't really know the gist of the story and if it has anything noteworthy in it. Anyone got anything in regards to that?

The "every name has a purpose" clue is interesting, hadn't heard that tidbit yet.

In terms of figuring out what the deal is with this island, why don't we try ruling things out?

Based on the show itself and comments by the creator, we can rule these out, I think:
-They are dead, in heaven or hell
-Virtual reality
-They are on an alien world
what else?

Bear
13:16 / 13.12.04
Yeah it's not a already dead twist but people still keep mentioning it on other sites.

Aliens seems a little too obvious to which I guess leaves us with the government in a Cube style experiment. I'm really not sure.

I was thinking that the metal they found was as simple as a trap door leading to something are is the whole island fake?

So there are only 3 more episodes left for season 1 and you know that they're going to leave us with one hell of a cliffhanger and we'll have to wait until next year for it to continue, it's all too much for me probably because I've been watching it the day afer it shows in America meaning that I've been avoiding spoilers.

I imagine they will give us the back story of Hurley the brother and sister combo and Michael before the season ends.

Also enjoying reading all the theories people are coming up with on the official site and also (my eyes!) Imdb, interesting that someone has noticed that the first class half of the plane is different in the later episode when they find the pilot than it is in the pilot episode the pilot is also different apparently, if that makes sense.

Also ideas that Hurley is Alex and the island is creating their desires is also popular.
