hmmm...the preview makes it look like Foreign Powers. But who knows.

"Alfred"? You mean Jarvis? Or is there an Ultimate Alfred I'm not thinking of at the moment?

Aertho

All butlers = The Butler.

SPOILERS

Foreign Powers + Loki. The Russian Ultimate's the mole, spy, and assassin. Oh Hank = feminine. Some bald dude steals Thor's hammer. Who's the bad team? Masters of Evil/Red Guard? They've a Hulk analog, a she-hulk analog, a female quicksilver... a thor and big weird Iron Man guy... any ideas?

Mr Tricks
20:06 / 07.12.05
Perhaps the "Masters of evil" Ultimate style.

I spotted
Crimson Dynamo
Loki
probably Vangard (hammer & sickle)
Abomination
maybe Red Skull

that's about it.

Oh and who else guessed the I.D. of our traitor?

Aertho
23:13 / 07.12.05
Betty is schtupping Nick.

Where'd Jan get to?

Who in Odin's name is gonna save the day?

Spyder Todd 2008

Cap. He was in SHIELD custody and with security in the Triskelion nuetralized I'm sure he'll have escaped and figured out what to do next.

Is it Vanguard, or Ultimate Beta Ray Bill?
Is it the Red Skull? I couldn't think of anyone better (since US Agent already died) but he doesn't seem very... Red Skully.
Abomination and Crimson Dynamo rule. Loki's cool as always. Any thoughts on the other three?

I like how the generic badguys wore green suits... I had a "Hail Hydra!" moment there for a bit...
And who was the evil mad scientist at the beginning?

Spyder Todd 2008

Wait a sec. It's been pointed out to me that pseudo-Red Skull has a "W" on his chest, and I can only think of one person with a tendency for wearing red and black with a "w" fetish...

sorry, what are you all talking about? you didn't get all this red skull / 'w' stuff just from that preview did you?

What was that crap Millar was waffling about, how he'd 'checked all the forums and nobody'd goty close to guessing the traitor'? Well, I know I did.

Very, very good, though.

Vol 2's really kicked. All the criticisms of 1 answered by an endless stream of acksheearn n' drama, all building up to this. Brill. Will clap when Hulk smashes these pricks. Go AMERICA!

Anyone else clap when Jarvis got shot?

Mr Tricks
16:16 / 08.12.05
I liked the "drama" of a silent "shot" no sound FX.

Also found some interesting parallels with the AUTHORITY what with super people flying through giant heads and the attack of an army of Asian supermen.

Quicksilver & Wanda FINALLY do something.

The art seemed a bit rushed here & there.

I initially thought that torture doctor was also Loki. Green eyes & black hair. It also seems that Ultimate Hawkeye has been given Bullseye's powers.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
16:56 / 08.12.05
The super-baddies' geen uniforms reminded me a bit much of Green Goblin; probably some plans available on the internet or something.

Liked the design for Crimson Dynamo.

Thor's moment of terror is perhaps my favourite part, because he's still my favourite Ultimate...

The Natural Way
17:05 / 08.12.05
I'm fairly sure that the Ulti-Red Skull analog was our fave supernazi from vol 1, but I could be wrong. That guy definitely isn't the Skull, though. Don't be silly.

Aertho
17:08 / 08.12.05
The Asian greens may indeed be Ultimate Hydra. I'd like that origin.

So Red Skull is Colonel? And the robot with the hidden human head behind red glass is Crimson Dynamo? Abomination and Loki are easily identified. Whozarest? Noone seems to know. Assuming that this superteam consists of delegates of secret "evil" Russia, North Korea, China, and Arab states... Does that make the white Quicksilver woman an Arab female Sirocco? Is the Colonel Russian or Sith? Any guesses toward the guy in green with red hair?

What's the reference on "Great Satan is liberated?"

Aertho
17:10 / 08.12.05
Ulti-Red Skull analog was our fave supernazi

The nekkid Chitauri guy that Hulk ate?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
17:13 / 08.12.05
I assumed that the "Great Satan" was America, and liberation was facetious. But I couldn't say one way or other for sure.

Wonder if these events will be at all reflected in Ulti-X-Men, Spider-man, or Fantastic Four.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
17:14 / 08.12.05
Btw- Captain Wakanda, maybe?

Aertho
17:21 / 08.12.05
I figured "Great Satan" might have literary history to it. I doubt there'll be conitinuity between Ultimates and the other Ultimate titles. I like it on its own anyway.

You think Colonel is Black Panther? Or the red haired diamond dude? strange coloring for a black man... hadn't considered one of the European supers might have had an African member.

Colonel might be Ulti-Baron Zemo or Ulti-Taskmaster. Monster Girl might be a mutated Ulti-Moonstone. I'm more interested in where these operative come from, than who they're supposed to be. Like what supers might Kim Jong Il authorize?

Mr Tricks
17:29 / 08.12.05
Crymson Dynamo is mentioned by Name. While I'd prefer an "updated" Red Skull, my only other guess would be "Scarlet Centurian" (which would be sort of lame... how many other words for red can be used?).

Asian Hydra might be cool aside from a Hydra being of Greek myth and why would North Korea refer to Greek Mythology?

Isn't "the Great Satan" what our pal Osama calls the U.S.?

I can imagine Millar creating an ultimate version of his GORGON in the form of that black horned female. It's certainly NOT Enchantress.

Not sure what give's the impression that the woman in white is of a speedy nature. Did I miss something? Moonstone perhaps?

At this point there doesn't seem to be any thematic connection to those character designs and 616 versions of the Masters of Evil. Could the guy in green be Whirlwind?

here's a list of 616 Master's of Evil.

MoE I:
Leader: Baron Heinrich Zemo
Members: The Melter, the Radioactive Man, the Black Knight, and later the Executioner and the Enchantress.

MoE II:
Leader: Ultron-5 (as the Crimson Cowl)
Members: Klaw, Whirlwind, Radioactive Man, Melter, and Black Knight III

MoE III:
Leader: Egghead
Members: Whirlwind, the Scorpion, Moonstone, Tiger Shark, and later the Shocker, Beetle, and Radioactive Man.

MoE IV:
Leader: Baron Helmut Zemo
Members: Titania, Absorbing Man, Moonstone, Yellowjacket, Grey Gargoyle, Screaming Mimi, the Wrecker, Thunderball, Piledriver, Bulldozer, the Fixer, Tiger Shark, Goliath, Blackout, Whirlwind, Mr. Hyde.

and yeah... a bunch of us guessed Black Widow right off the bat.

I maintain that our lightsaber wielding friend is Wonderman. Until proven otherwise.

COBRAnomicon!
17:53 / 08.12.05
I was really disappointed that it was Black Widow; she was such an obvious candidate that I have to assume that said obviousness was actually a very sneaky fakeout designed to make us think that it couldn't actually be someone that obvious.

Obviously.

Great Satan is what a lot of Islamic Fundamentalists have called America over the years, I think popularized by the Shah and Ayatollah of Iran in the 80s. It probably goes back a lot further, but that's when I can remember it being a popular name for America.

Which makes whoever Red Helmet is all the more interesting.

My money is on Captain America and FREAKIN' HULK. Again.

You think it's Oliver North?

Mr Tricks
18:12 / 08.12.05
my Bet.

Cap frees Thor who finnally proves his divinity. Daring escape by Hawkeye, perhaps with the help of Ant Man. They'll probably comes accross a captured Tony Stark (who will then disable all the technology with some drunken Hacking). Janet sets a captured Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch free. Nick Fury gets a bionic arm.

The Falcon
18:22 / 08.12.05
Yeah, I totally didn't register on first read that Nick Fury had had his frickin' arm PUNCHED OFF. Hardcore.

Ah, there's no better fights than ideological opposite fights. This's gonna be like the Tomorrow Syndicate. Very cool.

I think QS and Wanda get a raw deal; they've done a fair bit in the last year - the former finally disarmed Thor and she vaporised Iran's weaponry. Of course, I wasn't really on their side, but they've certainly done some work in Vol.2. (Much better than 1, I reckon.)

Oh, and you know Thor, Cap and Hawkeye'll save the day.

Spyder Todd 2008
18:24 / 08.12.05
Ummm... so Mr. Tricks "Who are the Masters of Evil?" post makes me possibly reconsider my previous statement. Only because Mr. Red is in fact wearinf a CRIMSON COWL. But I'm not convinced either way. Is Millar planning on revealing who the Ultimate MoE are anytime soon?

Aertho
18:32 / 08.12.05
Crimson Dynamo

Forgive me, I missed the part that calls the character by name. So that means the Sith guy that says "Great Satan" and is called Colonel is Crimson Dynamo, and that the guy that I thought was CD is actually a 'uge robot Red Skull?

If the team is Winter Guard, then maybe there's a Ultimate Darkstar, Airstrike, Fantasma, Vostok, Perun, Gremlin?

LDones
19:55 / 08.12.05
Not so. Loki addresses the robot suited glowy head guy directly as Dynamo in conversation.

Great Satan is an extremely common term for Americans who watched the news in the 80's, 90's, or 2000's.

Krug
20:24 / 08.12.05
I really laughed at the "liberating the great satan" bit. Like many of pointed out in this thread "great satan" is just a common term used by Islamists for Yanquistan. Liberating like America "liberated" Iraq.

Not very pleased with the series, we get three minutes of story every two months. Will definitely read better in trade.

Only a few panels of Thor! Millar you cock why do you think anyone reads your slow comic?

Spaniel
21:03 / 08.12.05
Arse. I knew I should have gone to the comic shop today.

Yotsuba & Benjamin!
23:15 / 08.12.05
That was just crazy. I'm going to have to go through the series again because this just seemed like a whole nuclear warhead of insanity with, like, zero precedent. It's like a whole issue of that one page of Planet X. Which could the best or worst thing about it, depending on your personal preference.

Aertho
00:24 / 09.12.05
Not convinced that "Colonel" is Red Skull. At least not Der Fuhrer's Roter Schädel. Format of his uniform makes me think he's the Anti Cap, and coloring styled after the Captain Europes. Closeup reveals what i see as olive skin, and "Great Satan" suggests Middle Eastern/Islamic origin.

Don't think it's a W for Wonder Man so much as a trick of shadows and sloppy inks. That means a red, white, and black flag.

Maybe it's Captain Iraq? Persons of mass destruction?

The Natural Way
08:14 / 09.12.05
A key ingredient in the Skull's history/make-up, is the fact that he was the Reich's ultimate supernazi - everything german and evil to Cap's american and good. He's also Cap's oldest foe. Fits with our boy from vol 1 on both counts. But, regardless of whether or not you (or I, for that matter) buy that idea, the 'Colonel' is not the Skull.

And it is SO NOT OKAY that this thread is FULL of people who have no idea what 'The Great Satan' refers to. No wonder Barbelith @ large despairs of this forum. Chad, PLEASE! this is NOT a dis, put away yr 'literary references' and green memes and just watch the news every now and again.

slow motion crash into triskelion was handled majestically by hitch.

hitch makes action comics into something special, something to be enjoyed and read visually - he reallly does.

you can feel the gravity in his panels.

overall tho, a bit naff this issue. naff in the way that the ulti-boes are NEVER prepared for this shit.

actually, I tend to enjoy all the shit BEFORE the big strikes in ulties.

big strikes make for some great art but . . . .

i dig the pre-strike narratives more man.

Aertho
10:52 / 09.12.05
this is NOT a dis

Yes, Yes. At no point was I not aware that "Great Satan" referred to America. Duhhhh. It was the phrasing that had me thinking there was more to it. But a reread made it plain. I honestly thought "liberated" was said without irony. D'oh!
