Suit 6 is definitely something huge - look at the compartments on Stark's satellite. The sixth one appears to be much larger. The new calm version of Bruce Banner is excellent. Are we going to finally get the Norse mythology revealed, or is there going to be a complete "normal" explanation as to why Thor disappeared? It'll be interesting to see if Loki even gets the chance to do any damage or if he gets pulled off the board by Odin.

Anyone notice the panel of the other Ultimate superheroes being led along in shackles?

On rereading, I really liked the Banner cameo as Tank Man* in Tienanmen Square. That was quite a good Millar moment, I thought.

*n.b. this is not a reference to the Authority, fellow comic fans.

When oh WHEN will we find out what that weird "W" logo on Capt. Middle East's chest means?!?!? Millar why do you torture me so??

Suit 6? Maniac 5, anyone?

Yes, I think so. Yes.

I just assumed it would be a smaller, sleeker, more similar-to-the-mainstream Iron Man suit... maybe even the same one from the Maduriera sketches.

Suit 6 = Miller's riff on the Citysuit from Earth X. Sussed.

I liked this. It's by-the-numbers set-up-the-pieces big comeback revenge porn that Miller does well (see the Authority vs. New Authority) but so fun to watch all the bits tick together. Like Mousetrap.

Loki, Loki, Loki. How pretty is that boy?

I want to give Hawkeye a hug.

And a non-dead family.

Hug!

Is the city suit anything like Maniac 5?

That would be boring. We already have a small sleek Iron Man suit. He wears it every issue.

The city (more a factory, really) suit is not like Maniac 5, as I remember, although he did have to fight some quite large robots. I do think Suit 6 will be rather large, and thusly brilliant.

Spaniel
21:11 / 25.06.06
I didn't actually mean Maniac 5 the human-sized cyborg - obviously we're not going down that route - just that Maniac 5 featured large mechanical fighty wotsits, and I expect to see large mechanical fighty wotsits next ish.

M5 was the one with a bandana? Was it really big (memory becoming vague; otherwise you'd've asked a quite daft question, BoBoss?)

Righty, yeah, I'd think so. Big compartment for big robot, Tony standing on loads of superpowered baddies from the Middle East next ish in about 4 months or so. Reckon.

Crosspost madness. It's like a two Ronnies sketch.

Doesn't the current Iron Man suit require help getting in and out of? He sort of sits inside the torso. If he's been working to get the suits progressively smaller, then the next one may fit the way the 616 suit does, like a costume.
But don't get me wrong. I'd love to see Tony Stark stomping in some giant battle mech.

We can all agree, though, that whatever's in Thunderbird 6 won't hold a candle to the Marvel Megamorphs thread.

The thing is, that wouldn't pack much of a dramatic punch. It's just not enough of step up from what we've already got. Sure, to minds well versed in Iron Man mythology it might be a bit interesting, but I can't see Millar or any of his editors jumping at the chance to reveal... dun dun dah... an outfit JUST LIKE the 616 suit. I mean, this is supposed to be climactic final battle, end of run stuff.

Nothing is better than Marvel Megamorphs.

It makes sense that Iron Man #6, would be a nano-bot-thin energy-repelling super-computer, but I hope to god it isn't. I want a fucking gigantic robot to tread on people.

Thing is if I was Tony Stark, I'd definitely build me a giant robot (possibly to crush cities beneath my gigantic metal boots, though I'm undecided on this last bit). Wouldn't everyone?

It's harder to target and buzz cute passerby(ers?) in a really huge mech, though. Y'know, without causing them to throw themselves at the pavement and piss themselves. Which, would ruin the effect.

For stamping out small cities, rather than a giant robobody, you pilot a small armor linked to a vast array of orbiting satellite deathray thingies. With pinpoint accuracy, so you can stand in the middle, laughing as all becomes wreckage, without damaging yourself.

Well, it's been said that Stark is some kind of multitask-freak. Iron Man 6 could be a tag for a huge army of remote IM drones which seems to butter Miller's hovis: Schizoid Men, Ultrons, the Red drones that stomped Banner, the Authority's Engineer etc

It better be a giant fucking robot though

Axolotl
17:48 / 30.06.06
*threadrot* Decrescent, if your mech was big enough you could pick up people and hold them on the palm of your hand/giant mecha-mittens. That would be quite cool *threadrot over*
Good idea Triplettes, I guess it comes down to what Millar thinks is cooler: giant robots or swarms of robots.

The Falcon

GIANT ROBOT

This Sunday
20:15 / 30.06.06
*continuing threadrot, horribly* See: Sleek, roughly-personsized Iron Man swoops by, I think 'swoon', while when giant Iron Man grabs me in palm of hand... I think 'Ack! I'm Minmei!' *threadrot temporarily ceasing*

Is there a scheduled lock for this series, right now... or is it on a 'as can' or 'as far in the future as can' basis?

While I don't pretend to understand the phrasing, Millar and Hitch's Ultimates ends with #13 of this series to be followed by (no thank you) Loeb and Madureira's vol. 3 and Loeb and (oh Ed, I wish you'd draw more things I want to read) McGuinness' vol. 4

Essential Dazzler
21:40 / 30.06.06
It's also worth noting, that Loeb and McGuiness have already started on volume 4, and work will continue simultaneously on the two volumes. It doesn't make me want to buy them any more than I did before (I don't) but it does make me feel slightly less sorry for those who do.

So, does this mean that the Ultimates will become the new Authority? Millar's flawed run being made to look far better in comparison to what came after it...

FinderWolf
18:31 / 01.07.06
Does this mean Vol. 3 will be 12 issues and Vol. 4 will be 12 issues? None of the interviews I saw gave any indication of how long Vols. 3 and 4 will be. I sense that with this much lead time and McG. and Mad. on art, they'll be significantly less than 12-13 issues per volume.

I just realised I've already decided to drop this on Maduiera alone, I hadn't even considered Loeb as a factor. I've never read any of his work, what do people here think of him?

I assume not much, as nobody seems excited.

Triplets
09:57 / 04.07.06
I'll Byrne one or two issues and go from there. If it's got good narrative and "mahd ideas" that's half a reason to read it (50% more than it takes for a lot of people to keep on buying sometimes it seems).

Thaaaaatt said, for me, Ultimates 3 really needs to live up to the promise of "high action, streamlined Avengers". If it doesn't I might as well just go read the Avengers, surely?
