Liked where this ish went, but I could have done without the 10 page rehash of the last episode's final page. Superfluous expository filler if you ask me.

Yeah, Trip, I can't imagine Cap doing that either.

well, the traitor having done what they did, I can't see them ever being sympathetic again... if it wasn't Loki or someone who we're supposed to hate as an all-the-time villain. So it can't be Cap, Tony, or any of our "heroes." Maybe Black Widow...? I could see her being evil in the Ulimate MU...but not a child killer.

But Boboss, then we wouldn't have had Hawkeye's awesome cutlery assault, which was easily the best moment for a along time.

This issue really affected me. Having all the most violent moments off or between panels, left only the consequences and reactions to concentrate on. I found the look of shock in Hawkeye's eyes far more upsetting than I would find a panel of a kid getting shot.

Jesus kids!

Loki Sighting.

Cap orders the mass exodus of nondescript Arabs unto washrooms ten miles away. Shares a panel with one Arab man, clothed in green!. Then a closeup of the Arab dude's face. Cue weirdness.

Since Loki's here, who says everything happened the way we think it happened? At least with a mischief god we don't have to worry about meaningless reality-warpin'.

I think the Black Widow is the gunman(woman) who took out Clint's family. But I still think Captain America is formulating an agenda.

Yes we would. I was complaining about the beginning of the comic.

I have to say that last scene was really well done and very powerful. I agree with The Chao Goes Mu's comment about the power of keeping the actual events off panel - it would have been easy (and less effective) to overdo the blood.
It really makes the traitor seem properly evil, which is sometimes missing from supervillains.

Anyone else thinking Fury? He's mass-producing heroes now, so why bother with the originals? Got his own secret team on the side as well, so he decides to release 'Banner is Hulk' to the public, paints Thor as crazy, etc. The 'soldier' comment fits him, and so does 'oh Hank' as well.

It's Jarvis.

I actually thought Jarvis as well... "the butler did it."

Well it's definitely not cap. Firstly, because WHERE THE FUCK WOULD THE BOOK BE W/OUT ITS FLAGSHIP CHARACTER? Secondly, because Cap isn't a gloating, sadistic child-killer and, thirdly, because it's just too obvious. The only real option left is Widow. She's special services and is the only ultimate likely to employ the term "soldier". Then there's the "Oh, Hank...." stuff, which seems a little fem for the blue-eyed boy. And what about the aforementioned gloating tone? Natasha's got that in spades. The motivation's there, too: she remembers soviet Russia, the KGB and their special brand of "homeland security". She's anti-totalitrian and see's america going the same way, perhaps? Finally, there's the classic Widow-goes-bad Avengers arc and the fact that NOBODY SUSPECTS THE GIRL... blah. Sorted.

not read it yet, but you're all mad to think that millar's actually got a traitor and he'll stick to it. the words won't go in the bubble until he's read all his web-posse's speculations, and come up with a unexpected, torturous explanation that WILL CHANGE TEH ULTIMATE UNIVERSE FOREVERRRRRRRR

jarvis is currently a very good suspect though, given that he's [kinda] gay and mark millar doesn't like it when gay characters in his comics aren't sociopathic.

Well, I agree that Pappooose makes a convincing arguement for Widow, but I can't help but feel that making the Russkie a traitor is a bit obvious.

Well, yes it is, and maybe even a little disappointing, but dude, what book are you reading again? "Do you think this A on my head stands for France?"

i'm definately thinking it's fury. from earlier issues you know he's up to something and there's no reason to think that he hasn't got it in him.

widow is a good candidate, but she isn't a core character, would make for a disapointing traitor. we need some big time betrayal here.

Aertho
16:58 / 22.07.05
Betrayal?

You think Tony's not pissed and feeling wierd that Thor's a nutjob, and possibly right all along? Now take his fiancé and make her a cold-blooded killer and political destroyer. Natasha slipping into evil will lock down Stark Industries and we'll get our sick, tired, pissed off, and black and white War Machine.

Yeah the team's gonna fall apart, but Tony's called IRON man for a reason, and we've yet to see that strength this time around.

No it wouldn't - Ultimate books would never be allowed to actually show that stuff. Remember that they're heavily edited for offensive content.

As for Widow, nnnyeah, but let's bear in mind that she's still in the team a few months from now (see October's solicitations).

So Millar/Hitch are done after this arc? I'm really loving this book mainly because of Thor and the whole "war on terror" satire. Thor needs more panel-time.

FinderWolf
18:12 / 22.07.05
My vote is Widow. She's the only one on the team who could kill kids and become eeevil in the eyes of the reader.

Or Jarvis.

As for what's next after Vol. 2, Millar and Hitch have hinted that they have another major Ultimate Universe project in the works -- maybe that is about the Ultimates characters in some way.

FinderWolf
18:27 / 22.07.05
oh, but I just noted the post above that says she's in the book in Oct.... and I'm doubting that they can make her a kid-killer now. Loki, maybe? Who else could kill kids and therefore become completely 100% reviled in the MU?

Or what if the kid isn't really dead?

Spaniel
18:44 / 22.07.05
Well, she's in Ultimate X-Men in Oct, so I suppose it could be explained away as a mismatched timeline thingamajig if it turns out she's a bad guy.

Ok, I no longer have any theory on the traitor, but I do have a question: why kill Hawkeye's family? That's a pretty brutal act, and calls for a some pretty serious motive.

I can't imagine any of the character's we know about having that strong of a motive?

Nick: No, he's already Nick's perfect soldier.
Widow: I can't imagine she considers him much of a threat.
Tony: Not a cold blooded killer.

All I'm left with is...

Cap: Is Hawkeye the only one can get an attack past his shield? If so, then Cap would obviously be the traitor, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense.

We've only seen the traitor's HANDS have we not?

It's M.O.D.O.K.

Spaniel

Perhaps the motivation for killing Hawkeye's family was as simple as leaving no witnesses.

i think hawkeye was hit because he was vulnerable. it's a retalitory strike against the ultimates, to but them off-balance and show that they're invulnerable.

or maybe it was the work of a rival olympic archer, vengence for losing the gold to him.

I think it's gonna be Black Widow doin the hit. She was the first traitor to the original Avenger's team. And I doubt Hawkeye's dead. Wanda left her purse at the Bartons, so watch Quicksilver return just in time to whisk Clint to safety.
I think there's room for multiple traitors with different agendas though. And I still think Cap doesn't like the America he's fighting for. Maybe Ultimate John Walker is nearby?
Here's the next cover for Grand Theft America...
