cool, glad to hear the new issue is (finally) coming out.

I knew there was something fishy about that kid. I actually thought he was an Semitic variant of Loki at the time, cause of the green.

So, is the Schizoid Man a new character?

Mario

Apparently, tho he may be named after the King Crimson song (or the Prisoner episode)

Seems kinda redundant what with the Gamorra troops/Hydra flyers.

Schizoid Man is a totally new character, yes - made with cells stolen from Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man.

(Schizoid Man is the title of an old Prisoner episode, and I know Millar is a Prisoner fan, btw)

Ha, I missed that. Think Bush has made Millar an honorary U.S. citizen yet?

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

Where did Madrox show up in the Ulti-verse?

Perun "the Soviet Thor" is a nice nod to the old 616 People's Protectorate. I used to have those Avengers comics where they teamed up with the PP and Alpha Flight. My first exposure to Perun.

I liked the bits about the Ultron bots doing crowd control, and Al-Rahman's attitude that the people of America shouldn't suffer for their government's decisions. Swarm was a nice counter-point to the Wasp.

Tony's reaction to Jarvis was...nice. It was only handled in a single panel, but jived well. He proves to be the smartest man around, even if he didn't see Natasha coming...

I'm pretty sure Pym's already rigged the Ultron bots to save America's ass when the time is right.

Two more issues or three?

Hawkeye is HardCORE. Weird.

Three, I think.

I love how Ultimate Hawkeye is a cross between Bullseye and Hawkeye. Fingernails... guh. And man, Millar isn't subtile (although I like how we've seen the new "captain" before) but man he does the "someone is going to get their ass kicked" comeback scenes like nobody's business.

And I REALLY hope Thor's prayers pay off.

How did Tony react to Jarvis' death? You got me wondering.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
02:49 / 02.03.06
Natasha tells him to "stop blubbering over Jarvis." It's not very much but while on the one hand Jarvis has been sort of a questionable stereotype figure, I do think his interaction with Tony has been one of the backbones of the Ultimates so far. Occasionally we get moments like this that highlight the emotion under the snarking.

>> Hawkeye is HardCORE

And Bullseye, apparently, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread.

The final page with Cap seemed like another in a series of "Cap says something badass on the final splash page" pages...although this one lacked oomph for me. Cap's face looks a little long/distorted here...maybe it's intentional since he's just been beat up pretty good.

So I guess the Middle Eastern Captain has no official superhero code name. So what does that "W" on his chest stand for?

Anyone have name meaning translatons for "Abdul Al-Rahman"?

Abdul Rahman (Arabic عبد الرحمن is a very common Arabic name. It means "Servant of the Merciful", refering to Allah. It has many variant spellings, including Abd al-Rahman, Abdelrahman, Abdurrahman, and others.

such as...

# Omar Abdel-Rahman (1938 - present), militant Islamist leader convicted in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing
# Abdul Rahman Yasin (1960 - present), terrorist wanted in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing

[loved how barbelith's system interpreted an arabic character as an emoticon]

is a very common Arabic name.

So it's as common as, say, Steve Rogers?

I wonder if the the supersoldier serum only works if the recipient is to be naturally ill and frail. The USAgents from the annual were otherwise healthy jarheads, and the serum burned them out.

Where did Madrox show up in the Ulti-verse?

He first appeared in Ultimate X-Men during the "Ultimate War" storyline. He was part of The Brotherhood.

Considering the overwhelming numbers seen in the attack this Schizoid Man must not have the same problems with spreading his conciousness that Multiple Man has (a concept Millar cut'n'pasted from his run on Authority).

it's like Miller's invented crack, and it last for about a minute, and then he'll give you some more in three months time, and now my whole life revolves around waiting for some more crack.

What I liked about this issues

The Origins of Captain Middle East.
The secret base in Paris (very Da Vinci Code).
THE LIBERATORS (instead of Masters of Evil).

New characters; Hurricane & Schidzoid Man (though I don't see why the Ultimate Madrox couldn't be used.)

Ultimate Villians; Swarm, Dynamo (particularly the remote controlled versions) & Abomination

    Super suits "burn-out" their users.
    Thor Praying.
    Wasp's quick thinking.
The Debut of Antman and the Ultrons

What I didn't like
Tony's escape. Those Nano-bot seemed just too convenient, and the hitting the ex in the face with a champaign bottle just seemed gratutious. Why not just shut down her nervous system?

Hawkeye's escape. Okay, so they must have loosened his finger nails during the tourture. Still wasn't that scene already used by Frank Millar in ELEKTRA LIVES?

    Too many splash pages.

That last page seemed all too familiar.

Those Nano-bot seemed just too convenient

Whilst I have yet to read the latest installment, I have to mention that (assuming this is what I think it is) Tony's had access to this stuff since childhood. The Ult. Iron Man limited series had him using a type of nano-tech to drive off bullies and (seriously) re-grow his legs.

Like the sound of the super-suits burning out their users. Means SHIELD won't be able to use their "4 Seasons" soldiers rather than relying on my favourite dysfunctional superteam.

Much as I enjoy this book, I can't help thinking it's a shame that it kind of skewers its own message. Yeah, sure, it's obvious that Millar isn't a fan of American foreign policy, but, in order for the story to work (the Ultimates must win, and we must be on their side for their to be any emotional satisfaction when they do), the Liberators have to be played as 2D gloating, sadistic bastards (Al-Rahman aside).

Yes indeed. It's trying to have it's cake and eat it, and I'm not sure Millar's as savvy as he thinks he is. That said 'FUCK YEAH's' all round for Hawkeye and Tony, and I very much look forward to seeing Thor sans Belt getting all Ragnarok next issue.

Hated the final page. Look at that plum's haircut.

the Ultimates must win

Unless the Ultimates decide to split from SHIELD as a result of all of this? Like their 616 counterparts.

Cap has already expressed his disapointment with the America he's awoken to. Thor's got good reason to encourage the others to leave. Stark can provide the financial backing.

Shame Millar's going with stereotyped "evil doers of evil", it would have been nice to see some comparisson between the ideals of the two teams.

Looks like "You think this A stands for France?" is going to be par for the course.

the name SWARM!! makes a comeback -- first in BKV's Runaways and now here. Seems like the generation that watched 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends' is truly taking over comics, more than ever...

Tricks: Tony's escape. Those Nano-bot seemed just too convenient, and the hitting the ex in the face with a champaign bottle just seemed gratutious. Why not just shut down her nervous system?

I agree it was excessive and violent, but don't forget that Tony's got that golfball-sized brain tumour potentially fucking with his behaviour. He also points out he's clearly got a lot of relationship issues, and this woman also just shot one of his best friends (Jarvis) in the head in front of him. And threatened to do the same to him - it seemed disturbingly in character given the situation. Natasha has gotten him to give himself over emotionally enough to actually ask the marriage question and fall in love. And I've been wondering when the tumour was going to actively start killing him or making him go a bit violent.

It occurs to me that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch have the healthiest relationship in the whole book and they're brother and sister. I was unhappy we didn't get to see them or Betty Ross, who remains one of my favourite characters. They're being held somewhere in the Triskelion until we have the public executions. Lame.

Thor praying was a nice moment, even though we don't get to see it. I really want him to be Thor, God of Thunder. Not just some guy with some technology.

Well, if toney can regrow his own legs using Nano-tech. Why hasn't he simply had those same nanos slice up that tumor and carry it out his bowels.

Not sure if it's characterization or Millarism that makes the champaign bottle to the face an appropiate response.

Not sure if Captain Middle east is as compassionate as he's being made to seem. Sure he want's few civilian casualties but he's also willing to see public exicution through with no sort of legitimate "hearing."

Wondered if Islamic medical crew would be waring a cresent rather than a cross.

Well, keep in mind that the Trial of the Hulk was a contrived fiasco and they were going to kill him anyway. Captain Middle-East is just skipping that part.

You've got a point about Tony's tumour, and I hadn't thought about that. But I'm also choosing to ignore the Ultimate Iron Man series in general, so... Is it any good? Card makes me twitchy so I've avoided it.

The champagne is a Millarism, I think. He seems to delve too deeply into the "Bad Girlfriend/Wife" stereotype too much, as well as the extreme violence; this is just before Hawkeye kills a bunch of enemy agents by using his fingernails, which still grosses me out too much.

Is it any good?

Erkl. As much as I loathe Card's politics, I have a special love for Ender's Game and the related sequels. So I tried UIM because of this love....

Yeah. The combination of unattractive art with some decent ideas that simply don't work with pre-establish Ultimate continuity makes it a kind of blah read. I'd avoid it.

Unless the Ultimates decide to split from SHIELD as a result of all of this? Like their 616 counterparts.

I believe that's bound to happen. what we don't know is wether it was orchestrated from the get go or Millar thought a change in the American zeitgeist gave him the window to reflct that in the comic.

on a not so recent interview he said there should be more comics aimed at a Conservative crowd. either he was showing his best [?] hype-face to the press or that fell flat as more and more media outlets - talk shows, even - changed their take on Busheney's Administration...

Cap has already expressed his disapointment with the America he's awoken to.

yeah, but talking about Cap, we'll never forget "this A doesn't stand for France"... or something. an opposite to that was beautifully executed by Brubaker/Lark in the usual Cap comic some months ago, with him recalling fighting for Paris side by side the French troops.

and come to think of it, who is the Ultimates' traitor that contacted Pym? it WAS Rogers, right? Millar might have wanted to build up on changing Cap, so maybe Fury got him for the wrong reasons, but...
