Oh, my. There was an X3 trailer on before Aeon Flux in the cinema last night, but I wasn't too impressed. But *this*...I'm impressed. Oh, my, yes.

I feel a bit sorry for the bald kid, this looks like exactly the same role he played in Ultraviolet...

New preview does seem a bit better then previous, but I still cant get over this feeling of dread that this movie will be terrible.

I hope I am suprised when I do see it.

I may be a bit late to the party here, but this trailer actually sells the film a lot better than the previous.

I now really, really want to go see the film when it comes out. (Although it has taken several viewings to work out what Jean says to Logan towards the end).

Mild spoilers ahead

Oh, and am I seeing things, or is there a brief glimpse of someone who looks like Spike from the X-men evolution cartoons? Granted, this may be a cameo in the tradition of mutant cameos to keep the comics-loving-public interested, but still - also, who is the mutant who claps their hands together for some sort of concussive wave effect just after "Magneto's got an army out there"?

Anyway. That's me geeked out for now.

Do you think it's of any relevance that this chapter of a superhero film saga associated in some ways with "queerness", tolerance and deviance, seems to be set to a large extent (and very visibly) in San Francisco?

Should I unpack that.

The kid with spikes coming out of his face/skull reminded me of one of the random kind-of-ugly-or-freaky-looking mutants that Quitely drew.

This trailer looks pretty decent but I just have no idea how the movie will actually BE. We'll find out soon. I have very low expectations at this point so I'll be delighted if it doesn't absolutely suck.

It is interesting how they're taking the plot points not only from the Dark Phoenix Saga from years ago, but the relatively very recent first Joss Whedon story arc (which had probably just hit the shelves when the script was written, I'd imagine?). Likewise, Spidey 3 may use much of Bendis' Ultimate reinvention of Venom. I don't know what it is that interests me specifically about comic book movies using very or relatively recent plots as the meat & bones of their stories, but it's interesting to me.

One thing I'll be happy about with a new director, is maybe the "It's all about gay, growing up gay, being... oh, and maybe all those other minorities, oppressed groups, or estranged folks can see something in it, too," and just move on to a more Morrison futurekids scare the crap out of old stick in the muds who should step out of the way, but with more McKellen screentime. I know this reads bitter, but that's just because I'm being bitter. 'X-Men' should be about the different vs conformity, or any oppressed, isolated set or individual joining and doing something useful for the whole of society and life. To limit it to one group or one type of person, is to miss the opportunity of such a broad and simple allegorical possibility.

Really, they just need some random super-allegory director like Beat Takeshi or John Cameron Mitchel to direct an X-Men motion picture for the ages. But, in the meantime, this may be entertaining (hopefully, in more than a spot-the-chara way) and the new preview was actually what I was expecting from the first one.

I don't know what it is that interests me specifically about comic book movies using very or relatively recent plots as the meat & bones of their stories, but it's interesting to me.

I think it's more a case of recent writers crafting narratives that are more straightforward and in many cases, cinematic in nature. In Whedon's case, well, it's like having him doctor your script for free, isn't it?

And Venom's new origin is much more tied into Parker's narrative, thus making it more conducive to a two hour movie. There's no drama in introducing Brock and telling his story for ten minutes if it has nothing to do with Peter.

I guess part of the reason it interests me is that the very quick turnaround from recent comic plots into film use is that it shows that screenwriters, producers, directors, etc. must be reading the newest comics as they come out, which probably was not formerly the case in Hollywood.

it's also probably that the first generation of hardcore comic book fans are occupying more and more higher positions in Hollywood.

This Sunday
21:10 / 11.03.06
That ought to be shifted to 'open' comic fans, I think, since there's been comics fans throughout Hollywood and in entertainment in general from Dorothy Parker and Billie Wilder to Nic Cage and Sam Jackson.
It's also very much the case that most superhero adaptations don't really pilfer particular stories from the comics, except for, maybe, the origin. Kryptonite and possibly the Barbara Gordon Batgirl, came into comics, not from. Let's just hope 'Black Hole' will be a solid adaptation of the comics, and not just characters and concepts or something.

Whoa, DOROTHY PARKER liked comics? Seriously?

This Sunday
02:16 / 12.03.06
There's an online essay, somewhere - something like 'Intellectual Marijuana' which quotes Parker on her addiction to comics, and how it's confessed with the same sort of enthusiasm one says they've been addicted to heroin for twenty years... something like that. I just woke up and saw this when I hit refresh on my sleeping machine.
It's the kind of news I enjoy far more than, say, the publication of Norman Mailer's comics or when Bob Gale went and did some 'Batman' issues.

Well, well. Has anyone else seen the Jay Leno interview clip with Hugh Jackman doing the rounds? The one with the fastball special and the really rather mammoth spoiler that I'm frankly amazed they've been able to keep secret this long?

06:01 / 30.04.06
Thanks for the link. The version I saw yesterday had no sound, and now I kinda wish it had remained without sound.

Maybe some industrious and slighty terrifying crusader can insert some title cards and make a decent silent movie out of this.

Hieronymus
16:50 / 01.05.06
Yeah, what the hell is up with the crescendo of orchestral music and then that sudden silence and the THUNK of Storm slapping up against metal? That pretty much kicked off the snickering for me and it didn't stop after Wolvy pulled a little David Copperfield there.

Feverfew
17:56 / 01.05.06
Damn you, Seth, I now have that idea stuck in my head.

If they took that sequence, removed the sound, added some scratch and put it into sepia, then I can picture the following cards appearing...

"Comrades! We are embattled!"

"My Russian friend - do you like Baseball?"

"But where has the tiny Canadian gone?"

"I have returned, and the thread is no more"

FIN

... Sort of thing.

On a more positive note, at least you get to laugh at the audience cheering at the end.

yeah...the spoiler...wild that we haven't heard that before. i'm curious to see that angle of the movie more than anything now.

Seth
23:39 / 01.05.06
I know. I've now become paradoxically excited to see a film that I think is going to be appalling just to see how they handle it. Damn, I want to talk about this with you lot but I don't want to be the one to break the spoiler, and I know that it's only a matter of time before someone bumbles in here pre-release and spills the beans. Bugger.

Foust is SO authentic
03:13 / 02.05.06
I'd bet good money that the scene takes place in the Danger Room, thus lessening the impact of the spoiler. If the movie really *does* have that particular element in it, it's even more ridiculously over packed than it already appears.

Here's a 7-minute preview.

I don't know what to think now - I thought the Danger Room/Sentinel clip that was doing the rounds two weeks ago looked awful, and while there are certianly some awful bits in this preview, there were also some tingly moments (the good kind) for me too.

it's the dialogue...jeez, the dialogue is pretty terribly written. all the storm/hank/logan/xavier stuff in the beginning was pretty awful.

but angel and kitty vs. juggarnaut....oh my yes.

unfortunate, because that current official trailer gave me hope, making it seem epicly badass.

That "quite an animal" bit between McCoy and Logan was awfully cheesy. But after pouring over these clips (and be advised. There's a helluva lot of them and helluva lot of spoilers to go with)... it really doesn't look so terrible.

I think the Warren Worthington clip (see it only if your doubts are strong) is the one that makes me believe.

2 more weeks.
