Ghost threads are already deleted, dude. What it wants is locking.

I'm concerned about deleting a post especially to a forum as diverse as the Temple without some communication with the person making it when there exists some level of confusion.

TBH, I am really not that bothered. But I am not an example of moderator best practice. The only reason I am still doing it is because my requests to Tom to be deselected have been ignored.

I personally feel very sad about the fact that you don't want to do it anymore. You are one of my most admired Temple people.

So, uh, the dark gift takes a while to kick in?
Still waiting. I know that comic mods waited for a similar amount of time, but Tom was in Las Vegas. Any idea when it's likely to happen?

Keep harassing Tom, I say.

Really?
I'd feel bad. I'd feel like an internet stalker.
Or is just how the Barb functions now? Would it be better if I did the nagging or would it be better if mods did the nagging?

Better if one of us did, I think. I can do that.

But, holy shit, when the dark gift takes effect? You can look into a thread's atoms. Its soul.

Unbridled power?

No, not really. Well, because there was a request for new ones and I want to help. I really value the temple as a space to talk about spooky mojo stuff, so I'd like to help.

And I think I'd make a good moderator. Because I'm online far too much and because I think I'm personable and a good communicator.

If I was made a moderator I would use my office to help spread literacy, end world hunger and promote world peace.

I really don't want to nag, but I'm still not a moderator.
Is the temple really that desperate for moderators and would temple people like more nagging?

Or is it time to let this perverse and lurid dream die?

I would like Princess to be a mod, based on the following criteria:

1) been here a year
2) posts in Temple
3) posts in Temple without making it smell like Cake of Light
4) is not Coyote/Jack Frost/Pookha etc etc chiz moan drone
5) or otherwise attempting to shatter our reality tunnels.

[clarification provided, kitteh pidgin redacted]

That aside: Tired. So very, very tired.

Princeling, if you can get some agreement round here, you should probably get on to Tom directly

I'm wary of people being made moderators essentially by personal fiat, although possibly I am clinging to an idea of regulatory control that is no longer relevant here. Perhaps if PS could explain the process by which moderation has been sought, we could go from there?

Princess: Being a moderator makes absolutely no difference to your experience of the board. You just click "approve" for people's spelling corrections largely. You are not missing out.

BTW if Tom ever does read this, I would like to be deselected as a mod.

B-but, Apophenia, if being a mod makes absolutely no difference to your experience of the board, why do you want to be deselected?

It seems to me that you've done a good job, over the years, as a mod, and that if I was Tom, I wouldn't be inclined to let you off the hook so easily.

I'd think; 'Well he's got a few good years left in him, yet

'I will torment him like a dirty puppet. And laugh while I'm doing it.'

You, Apophenia, will be a moderator on Barbelith until you die, I fear. And possibly for a while after.

We're admitting the truth about the zombie mods now? Tsk.

Can someone refresh my memory about Sypha? What happened at the end there?

I think he locked himself out of his suit and mailed the password to someone else (Haus?). Presumably he's now got it back.

He went away for a bit, then sloped back. There's been no noticable misbehaviour, although I don't remember seeing an apology either...

Pretty much covers it. I used to think that people should not make Barbelith responsible for their lack of self-control, and so should have the courage to scramble their own suits. These days, however, I have changed my mind. If somebody genuinely doesn't feel competent to change their suit identity, but wants to be banned, I feel it would be more compassionate to do so - if they regret it, they can reapply by the standard channels.

Of course, the time lag between asking to be banned and actually being banned might still be considerable, but that's the system - broken.

What kind of "regulatory control"?

Essentially, the kind where the set of people who have the power to create moderators, remove moderators, ban people who ask to be banned and so on overlaps with the set of people who regularly read and interact with Barbelith.

I don't know what you're implying, Big Tank! Everything is running smoothly. For instance, why not check out the latest improvement to Barbelith - the Spruce Moose! It can fly 200 passengers from the New York to the Belgium Congo in 17 minutes!

Hop in, Big Tank!

Problem thread, and, I think, problem poster. For example:

"As for 'spiritual' slavery or the 'love' angle, I've always seen love and relationships as one or the other of the couple using mind energy to catch the other, all's fair in love and war ... With women i've found it gives the 'sender' an extra interest, you're doing something i have not seen before, is what i usually get, or total flaming stare and anger, -stay out of my mind, life, dreams, i kinda like that, lol"

Ideally I think I'd like it if this guy just quietly disappeared off the board, but failing that I guess all we can do is keep an eye on him and see if he becomes a repeat offender.

Locked. I think he'll slope off, shaking his head at our crazy PC ways, but if not I'm setting my delete button to kill. While it would be difficult to justify a ban (and then take the gestation period of a large mammal to get done) it's pretty clear he's not offering much added value to the board, to put it mildly.
Do we need any more casual misogyny, appalling run on sentences about meaningless psionic toss, and repeating the same tired old things again to a fresh fool? I don't think we do.

I found this chunk of stream-of-'consciousness' particularly telling-

If there is no contact but -in the spirit, then it becomes, not an issue of crime now does it... hmm, i'm thinking this is kinda sociopathic, but then i like uncle chuckie, anton szandor lavey, hell, even l ron hubbard, put aleister crowley's ideas to good use, i love jack parsons, and babalon working...

So what's the odds on single, under twenty, not too many friends, great power on the astral plane? Reckon he's got a copy of that how to pick up chicks with your mindpowers book?

In all fairness, does anyone honestly think Lucid A.I.'s psychik magiks actually work? It'd be a problem if they did, granted, but really, what are the chances? From his posting style, I'm not sure I'd trust him to change a lightbulb, never mind access his inner psionic power while trying to pick up hottt chicks in a tin foil helmet, as seems to be necessary for the process; I suppose the psionic delivery system might, in itself, have accounted for some the waves of negative energy that Lucid A.I.'s encountered, in the past. Assuming he's ever actually put any of this stuff into practice seriously, as opposed to after a couple of drinks.

Isn't he basically just a harmless fantasist? I mean he's hardly the lord of death, or whoever, is he? Surely if he's a threat to anyone, it's only to himself? And even then, I doubt it. I can see why the sort of material he was on about can get irritating, especially in the Temple, but, on the other hand, he seems like a (somewhat crap, admittedly) butterfly who's been shot with a blunderbuss.

Perhaps everyone could lighten up a bit?
