Current moderators;
Lurid Archive, Seth, grant, cusm, Talks to strangers, Apophenia, me, Olulabelle, who killed the electric monk? and charrellz

I don't think charrelz and cusm are on the board anymore, Lurid isn't around much, the rest are ace like the A-team as far as I'm concerned. Do we need more mods? I'm all for more on board if people see the need and want to pitch in, but half a dozen active mods should be sufficient in an ideal world.

Oh and to Princess- hey, you've got my vote if you want to click 'agree' and pester people to put in abstracts. Don't let the ENORMOUS COSMIC POWER go to your head though. I think you just email Tom and then wait.

How long?

Oh you big fibber. I was correcting spelling errors within a few days of getting the mod-nod. AND you snagged post #666 before I could, you bastard.

I'm all for Princess, Justrix, and id becoming mods if they want to. If we really are down two mods, then it's a good time to get some new blood. mwa ha ha ha ha.

Lurid does punt through mod requests and such. He's not very active postwise because atheist skeptic etc., but he is active in terms of voting and so on. (He also performs the important role of dragging me away from the keyboard by my coatsleeve while encouraging me to "leave it out, 'e's not worth it.")

I've not been as active in Temple as I used. I'd like to be more active in Temple, but I feel like I have to be more active in my own temple first. That said, I've been doing a lot of interesting religious-not-necessarily-mojockal stuff lately, so maybe I'll start posting about that.

Um. And none of this has anything to do with me clicking agree and proposing abstracts.

Sure, I'm game. It'll keep me reading and keep me involved, and I suppose it's no more time than I'm putting in not clicking agree and proposing abstracts.

Mostly I want to do it because I want to huggle Mordant.

I'm here, I just don't post very much these days, mostly due to school eating my time. I do stay up and up on the moderating though; I refresh the 'lith at least every hour to check for new jobs and I try to keep up with what's happening (though I'm a bit behind the last week or so).

Some time soon (read: week at the earliest, May at the latest), I'll get back to being a more active member.

Well hey, if we're only cusm down then it's not as bad as all that. If you nuggets want to join in then email Tom and meet me on the port hanger deck in twenty. MOVE IT, NUGGETS!

Just to check, is that the same email as is listed on the "register" page? Tom at barbelith dot com ?

That is a mystery. That is the same email that you writes to you automatically when you want your password, so it's obviously automated on some level. No idea if Tom reads all the incoming.

Yeah, that's the address. It's also easier for Tom if you use the format described... ummm... at the end of the Comic Mods thread.

Probably best if an existing mod does that, actually. I can if nobody else wants to -- I just did for the Lab.

Check out the Comics Mods thread, Princess -- it takes Tom a while to get the message and do it if he's busy. That thread's got a pretty good description of what the change is like: little disorienting at first.

I've modded to have Evade's contribution to the Prayer thread deleted. He's an atheist, and the post is pretty much a pisstake. I don't think leaving in the thread respects the intentions of other posters. If one wishes to lampoon religion, go right ahead, but try the Convo, I don't think that's the right place.

I agreed it, but took a good five minutes to stare at the screen and figure out why.

It's actually a fairly straight-up prayer from the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which is a gadfly religion.

Gadfly religion.

I think for me, while staring at the screen, I figured out that there's a line between the Subgenius and the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and it has to do with political commentary.

Yes, good catch dude. I confess I haven't really been reading the prayer thread and missed all this.

While I'm concerned that the Temple never become a place where reasoned critique of religion and religious practice is forbidden or frowned upon, I don't really think we need our rigid reality tunnels shattered by His Noodly Appendage.

As I understand it the FSM thing was initiated as a response to the very real and valid frustration created by the insistance of Fundmentalist Christians that creationism be taught in schools in place of the Theory of Evolution. However there are, to the best of my knowledge, no fundies of any stripe posting in the Temple. Nobody is shoving anything down anyone else's throats, and we are (broadly speaking) a fairly pro-science bunch. If Evade wants to come in with an informed critique of anything ze happens to have read there then that's just dandy, but I think we warrant something a bit more sophisitcated then Pastafarianism.

It's stuff like that that makes some of us (well, me, really) scared to post about religion in the Temple. And it's having ace mods who won't stand for it that make me want to.

Best practice is to PM the deletee with the text of their post, although if it is itself a C&P from another web site that may be redundant, and an explanation of why it was deleted.

Honestly, if we are deleting posts because they are douchy and pointless, I for one am setting up a posse. However, this might cause some problems; for starters, Jack Denfeld's prayer to Crom - why evade but not that?

Is the last post from Wolf referring to the post that has gone? If so, shall we delete that too? It doesn't make sense now.

Or I am stupid, which is quite likely.

It's a good question. Personally I would point to Penfold's long-term involvment with the board as a whole, and his sporadic but sincere interactions with the Temple. I read the Crom prayer not as an attempt to lampoon or satirise the rest of the thread, but as sort of chummy pop-cultural interjection--noisy listening, as it were. Maybe not best encouraged, as such, but not so eminently deletable.

That was my thinking, too. It's the political point behind the Flying Spaghetti Monster that seemed antithetical to the thread, rather than the inherent goofiness of the prayer & religion itself. Although I'm fairly sympathetic to Pastafarianism in general, the whole faith is basically a rhetorical weapon to use against stupid religious excess.

Hmm. I'm still torn.

I don't know enough about it to make a qualified decision so I shan't attempt to. In fact having to decide whether a presented religion is or is not worthy of prayer in the prayer thread is not something I would like to have to do, religion often being a somewhat esoteric and personal thing.

Wolfangel is praying. G is God.

So he is. Thank you for explaining Haus. Apologies to Wolf for not understanding.

Re: The Crom prayer

Me, I worship one of the two Irish Gods with the honorific Crom that REH lifted for his fictional barbarian's Deity. When I read Denfield's prayer I recognized it and associated it with people who were posting examples of prayer throughout the thread from various traditions. There are people who worship REH's Crom as a IRL Deity currently so for me it was not offensive.

I read it as an example of prayer that some people do seriously use and pattern after even if I don't personally do so. If Denfield is posting examples of prayers he thinks are useful for people without mocking others I'm cool with that. We might want to gently bring him up to speed on the larger picture of it as an educational favor.

I personally wasn't offended by Evade's post either because I found it ironic that a concept developed to refute Creationism was being asked for blessings. In the context of the Temple prayer thread I can understand why some people were offended by it as mocking/not sincere and support their right to have it removed. I contrast this to Denfield's which felt like an intentional addition of information perceived as useful.

(My itunes shuffle has decided to play music from Conan the Barbarian right now which it never does. Theology/Civilazation, for those of you dying to know.)

..seems I was a little fast on the post button.

I'm concerned about deleting a post especially to a forum as diverse as the Temple without some communication with the person making it when there exists some level of confusion. Did Evade think it was a useful helpful thing to post or merely mocking?

Deleting without communication does not address the source of the offense just the symptom that can certainly reappear in another form.

Are we saying an agnostic/atheist may not post a prayer to the Prayer thread? That one must only post things one personally finds valid as a religious offering?

You know, I didn't actually get a chance to read the prayer in question. Is it upthread, I am am just scooting by it? If not, could someone please post it here?

I am familiar with the FSM. The only problem that I actually have, is that, unless you are seriously worshiping FSM, or someone is at least, then it is hardly a prayer. I think I would read it more like commentary, rather than prayer.

I got Crom, though. That Dernfold...
