ah.

I want to play as a laaaady!
Sadly enough, you can't be female. It doubled all the work we had to do on the hero, clothing and morphing. We were really unhappy about it. However, you can team up and compete with heroes (or mercenaries, henchmen) and, as some heroes are female you may find yourself on a quest with a female hero at your side, or at your throat! It's a nice way to meet (virtual) girls… or – if you really wanted too - you could always dress as a woman!

so trannies (kinda)get a look in, but born-ladies dont.
hm.

That seems to be Fable's problem at the moment - the more you hear about it, the less it sounds like the 'groundbreaking' original brief.

Also on a Lionhead-related tip (seeing as they're publishing his Unity and all): Jeff Minter is giving away the Arse on Fire Special Edition of his brilliant Gridrunner++. Click here for much fluffy goodness. Basically a less forgiving, more sweary version of the original. If you enjoy it (and you bloody well should), show your appreciation by purchasing the game proper for a measly £5 here.

i think the new thing in fable is the level of detail they have gone into. they have programmed responses to some really unlikely actions, and lots of them.
this means that a player has massive amounts of potential exploring to do, but it does mean that innovation on the part of the experienced player may go nowhere.

you cant kill children, for example.

no, i dont really want to... but why not?

they have still stuck hugely to the old way of doing things, it seems. programming respones is all good znd well, but as that paragraph shows, it means tyou eventually run out of room.

with 'ragdoll' phyics, for example...
a realism achieved by giving the bodies a set of rules which can then be applied to any situation, rather than animate the entire range of possible ways NPCs can die or stumble or collapse.

gta's free roaming potential feels a bit more like that, but i dont think it really is.(vice and 3; i havent played SA)
hopefully rockstar and bigbluebox will pull the finger out for the next generation of titles. even more hopeful is the desire to see them do this before the next generation of consoles...
would it be so hard to create landscapes and objects that can be fucked with by every other object in the game, following the rules of how that object acts and how the recieving object reacts?
i mean, i know it'd be difficult, but is it impossiby so?

i feel like the first to invent an engine of that sort would make billions selling it to other companies.

Shameless pimping time: I'm currently using my blog to link to and explain the gameplay basics of the best free 2D PC shoot 'em ups out there on the Interweb, for those that are interested in that sort of thing, so if anyone knows of a game that they think needs bigging up feel free to PM me with the URL. Currently only done Noiz2sa and TUMIKI Fighters (which has just been updated to ver 0.2 and, quite seriously, rocks bells), but I'm aiming to get at least one new link up there per day.

Barbelith high score challenges, anyone?

I've just got past the $1,000,000 dollar mark on Vice City and i think i've found my fave selection of weapons at last, (I've got 8 weapons though, i think it said you could carry 9 somewhere on the net) so maybe my obsession will be coming to an end shortly and i'll return to some type of normal life. It's grown into quite an amazing game.

Sims 2: it's the dog's danglers!

Played and was totally unimpressed with the original Sims, was entirely prepared for the sequel to be equally as tedious. But no, Sims 2 has grabbed me by the most sensitive hairs on my being and gently drawn me in.

I find myself really caring about the guy I designed (slim, leather-clad, facial-tatooed, blonde-quiffed, goatee-sporting madman that he appears) and I am ashamed to admit that I'm really concerned, mainly about his love-life and secondarily about his career (as well as his bladder function and console gaming level).

This game draws you in in a similar fashion as opiates; "I can handle it, just one more go and I'll stop."

Anyone else had a go at this software masterpiece yet?

Triplets> I've had a quick search around, but can't find Crimson Zone. Do you mean Crimsonland? Just had a first crack at it and it seems like fun (although I'm a bit annoyed that doesn't seem to want to let me configure the controls to a Robotron-style 'one cross for movement, one for shot direction' scheme on a digital pad). I'll spend some proper time with it tomorrow.

Went to the local bowling alley with Fra Dolcino for the first time in a decade tonight and was very happy to find a brand spanking new twoplayer Outrun 2 sit-down cab there. First chance I've had to play the game - it's fucking immense. The atmosphere is totally Outrun, which is partly down to the return of the old tunes, but mainly because of the blonde girl sitting in the passenger seat, moaning whenever you screw up and cheering you for smart overtakes and drifts, and the zones you race through. No game's ever done beachside racing like Outrun.

Only problem I had was with the drifting. It's... individual. Go into a drift and you need to apply opposite lock immediately, otherwise you'll end up facing the wrong way. And it's not normal opposite lock, either - you need to turn the wheel almost entirely in the opposite direction to hold the slide and stop it from carrying on into the corner. To pull out of the drift, you have to move the steering wheel just that tiny bit more, so that it's completely to the side, which makes the difference between maintaining drift and pulling out of it almost digital, on/off stuff. It also means that I got the corners down pat straight away, keeping the drift going for just as long as I needed and making slight adjustments toit as and when, but kept on pinballing into the other side of the road when I tried to get the car straight again. FD had better luck, apparently managing to get the car out of the drift smoothly by applying the brake.

Need to play it again. And again, and again. I was already looking forwards to the Xbox version, but now my brain's melting out of my ears at the thought.

Also had my first proper go on a Dance Dance Revolution cab, seeing as the place had a nice friendly vibe to it and we didn't get the feeling that there were fifty teenage girls hiding around the corner, waiting to piss themselves laughing at our abortive attempts at shaking the bootay. I adore every other type of rhythm action game, but never got the guts up to have a razz on DDR before. Feel I acquitted myself relatively well, all things considered - came away with a B ranking overall, which shamed the others present (boasting now, I know, but their best attempts were 'Failed', 'Failed' and, yep, 'Failed'). That Xbox version for £29 with the mat suddenly seems much more tempting than previously...

I just bought an X-Box pretty much just for Fable, but KotOR has sucked me in and isn't letting go. What would people consider the essential X-Box titles? So far I have (borrowed):

KotOR
Halo
Prince of Persia
Project Gotham 2
Manhunt
Dead or Alive 3

Add these to your game list...

Panzer Dragoon Orta
Gunvalkyrie
Jet Set Radio Future
Splinter Cell - by far the best version
Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 4

Been playing a little of Silent Hill 4 and it's picking up in interesting ways. I'm getting a feeling that the first two will remain my favs since they're just so much more immersive but this one is a worthwhile edition.

Gradius V is probably my next PS2 purchase since Treasure's making a side-shooter and that's all that really needs to be discussed here.

Panzer Dragoon Orta
Jet Set Radio Future
Splinter Cell

Will try to get Silent Hill. Never played one of those games, but I have a feeling I might like them

toksik: I like good games. I dunno. I don't like FPS or sports - unless it's skewed like Speedball - or flight sims. I like good RPGs, platformers - but not Mario, different stuff like Rez.

There are just too many games on the box for a new user, plus all the stuff that's out of print but worth picking up second hand. I just thought I'd get people's recommendations and sort through that.

Sounds like you have a good list for X-Box essentials (and when you get on line, add me as a friend...we'll make a Barbelith X-Box crew!).

I like Mechwarrior on-line, and have really gotten into playing Wolfenstien, although the on-line has the same problem as ALL on0line FPS (newbies get fragged so much they never learn how to play and just give up).

And if you beat KOTOR, let me know. I have been battling the final boss for 43 months now (off and on) and have pretty much given up.

Glad you picked up some of those Sega Xbox titles. I'm sure you'll get a feel for them and overall they're pretty creative compared to the generally normal boundaries games keep us to. Rez is one of them as well. Speaking of, at TGS, there is supposed to be some word from the creator (I believe) of Rez about a new independent title he's been working on.

AFA Silent Hill is concerned, I'd recommend the Second one, as the 1st and 3rd's stories intertwine a bit while SH2 is pretty much a beast of it's own. Well... until of course I get through 4 that is. It's really unlike any other survival horror game as it's actually quite uncomfortable and has an atmosphere that make Resident Evil games seem like some poor, child-like formula. It's the kind of horror that fans have been looking to Japan for while U.S. studios give us poor remakes and Hollywood screenings. If you get your hands on a PS2 roll with 1 then 3 after playing 2 and then go to 4. It seems to be the most satisfying way to play them if you haven't had the chance to experience them yet.

If you happen to like Panzer, the later titles on Sega's Saturn system, if you could find them, are superb. There's a reason Saga goes for $125 U.S. used on e-bay. You should like Jet Set quite a bit as well. Creative and a worthwhile improvement over the initial one for Dreamcast.

I've got a PS2 already. Doing the Silent Hill games 1, 3, 2, 4 sounds really interesting if crazy time-consuming.

I would buy anything the Rez guy puts out. I still go back to that game and get a stupid grin on my face every time I play it.

So is X-Box Live worth it?

Oh and: holy crap on a stick. A slightly dogdgy guy at work, today dumped the following on my desk. I am never leaving the house again!

Max Payne 2
Metal Slug 3
XGRA
Blood Rayne
Suffering
Soul Calibur 2
Capcom v SNK 2
Marvel v Capcom
Fable
Juiced
Full Spectrum Warrior
Sudeki
Red Dead Revolver
Burnout 3
Kingdom Under Fire
Arx Fatalis
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2
Galleon
Slient Hill 4

God yes. I'm Live-enabled.

And Burnout 3's Road Rage mode is just sublime online. So simple, so destructive, so unbelievably fast. Blue team try to drive the full distance without being taken out. Red team have to take them out. Crashes are OK, but takedowns are fatal. 3 on 3. Yowser. You'll be ploughing through traffic, drifting at 150mph+ through corners, only to slip between a bus and an artic, everything is perfect, you'll be in the zone...

and then a perfect drift round a corner leads you to an open straight, you boost down it, and a bus pulls straight out in front of you.

The yell of "FUCK" deafens your team-mates.

Seriously, the swearing online in this game is mad. Second only to "fuck" is the sentence "where did that vehicle x come from?".

Did I mention it's fast?

i want burnout3 like a burns victim wants skin...
it seems like i am stuck in this shitty job, then, as i also want to get myself new decks and a computer.

bastard.

on the indirect recommendation of the Haus of Fear (and trust) i have started playing the thing.

this has been the best 6.99 i have spent on anything, and i would add that to the list of games being recommended above. the difficulty is not high yet, but that is more than made up for by the fear factor. anytime any of my squad go offscreen my paranoia levels ramp up immeasurably... the last time my engineer went for a wander i got a cutscene of thing beasts scuttling and he didnt come back for a while... now, i had sent him to do something, but how long does it take to fix a fuse box? and how long does it take to be disemboweled and replaced by a beast from the depths of space?

dude, i am starting to wish i hadnt given him such a big fucking gun...

as for that marine i found from alpha team, he never looks at me directly. maybe its my imagination, or maybe i'm gonna have to render him harmless.... permanently.
maybe i should just set fire to myself... they hate fire, dont they?...safe and warm in my cocoon of flames....mmm....flames...

I fucking hate Viewtiful Joe. It's taken me ten months to complete it on the easiest setting and now I've got the urge to tackle the next difficulty so that I can open up some of the secret stuff.

It's so bloody difficult first time around. Towards the end I started getting the system sorted out, but it's a serious learning curve.

One of the best endings to a game ever, though. Feels like a proper reward for all the hard work you've put in. I hate it so much, the sequel and PS2 remix are already on the shopping list.

I just got Soul Caliber 2 for PS2 for 8 quid earlier today. I finished the arcade mode in 6 minutes something and was a bit pissed but then i saw that there was a hard mode, an extra hard mode, an ultra hard mode, extremely hard mode, etc etc, so i guess i'll be on it for a while yet.

There's also a story type mode so that should be fun once i've unlocked extra characters and weapons. Just a bit confused though because i don't think you can jump.

Does the cool gameplay make up for nil-jumping? I'm sure it will do and i'll forget all about it, or i'll just work out how to jump and hate this post for ever.

Eion/Jack Frost/Whoever you are:

Jumping is really easy. You just go d-u. Or d-uf. Or d-ub. It's a really dumb thing to do, though, because it almost always puts you at a disadvantage. Sidestepping is much more useful, which is why it was prioritised to u and d.

Who did you cheese your way through it with? Cervantes? Nightmare?

Suede> I know, I know. My heroness is yet to awaken. And the thing is, I don't know why it's giving me so much trouble. I mean, normally if I have difficulty with a game I'll stick with it for hours at a time until I get it down - I'm pretty good at disciplining myself like that, forcing myself to learn. But with Joe... gah. Months later and Adults mode *still* farts in my face. I started up a game on it just after that post and did pretty well - got up to the end of the first half of level 2 without getting scratched. Came up against the Joker there (the enemies wearing top hats that jump out of the one-armed bandits) and he wiped the floor with me. Tried a couple more times and didn't have much more luck. Just gone back to it and now I'm even struggling with the very first bout of fisticuffs on that level.

I don't think I'm ever going to see those secret characters, you know. It makes it worse knowing that this stuff is possible, that you can get to a point where your skill level is so high that you can routinely take the piss out of anything that it throws at you. The main reason I went back to Joe yesterday was because I'd just watched Saurian's vids of him breaking the first level apart on the PS2 version - there are some ridiculous moments in there where you're made painfully aware that you're watching a master player. He sets up seven or eight enemies for a 1460 point combo at one point in the second video. The best I've managed in the entire game is around 600 points.

Arg. If I can get away with it, I'm going to spend every waking hour on it tomorrow. It's just getting fucking embarrassing now.

Solitaire Rose: some tips on Wolfenstein (if you're still playing it):

As a newb, use the Medic or the Lieut. Lets you hang back and watch the action and still come in handy. Watch your teammates, and find one or two good players that you can follow. Try to go out with backup. At the very least, you can soak up some lead for them.

Always fire in short bursts, leading the target. The longer you hold down the fire button, the more inaccurate your machinegun becomes. Crouching also improves your accuracy. Aim high, head shots are friggin deadly with any weapon.

You can block enemy airstrikes (can-style) by crouching on the can when it hits the ground, but it's a small window of opportunity (like, 2 seconds).

Find cover. Hold cover. Wait for teammates. Advance. Repeat.

Save your stamina for when you need it (like when you're getting shot at, or someone need a revive). You can restore stamina faster by crouching.

Learn to use grenades. They're fantastically useful, especially for penning an enemy.

Learn to drop your weapon if you're out of ammo and the last man standing, or if you see a more appropriate weapon. A medic with a sniper rifle is a brutal combination...

Hope this helps some.

Paleface i'm with you on the jumping thing, i tried it and it just seems to leave you as a floating target, they don't jump that high either but it doesn't matter because like you said it puts you at a disadvantage.

I cleared it with Yunsung first, i was shocked that i beat the last guy first time but that will soon become an almost impossibility when i change the difficulty levels. I hadn't even unlocked Cervantes at the time. Oh, also, this was only on the arcade level, not the weapon master mode, i'm still slogging through that one. I finished the arcade option with Talim aswell, (i think) who if i have the right name, is really fast. Now to start getting some moves sussed, then i can start stringing some combos together, it looks like it's got a lot of life in it, so that's good.

Also, like i said in another thread : i have Speedball 2100 that i got last night, i saw it mentioned in this thread further up and then i walk into the local shop and see it for a tenner! It's bringing back memories playing it, the last time i had it i was either on a Master System or a CPC 464! I'm yet to properly injure someone, which even though i wouldn't normally love the idea of such a thing, it gives you TEN points just like if you'd scored a goal! (as some of you will already rememeber very clearly i'm guessing.)

Holy shit, Burnout 3. I'm seriously going to have to get Live now. That game is completely nuts.

KotOR was boring me a little, but I've just gotten to the Sith world and had big twist so things are picking up.

I have Fable begging me to play it, but I'm trying to play only one RPG at a time to maintain at least a pretence of life outside the house.

Got a two month Xbox Live trial now. I'm limited to Project Gotham Racing 2 and Pandora Tomorrow as far as multiplayer shenanigans for the moment (and some online high score table challenges in other games), but will hopefully be adding Outrun 2 to those soon. Gamertag is E Randy.

I wasn't going to comment until I'd put more time into it, but I really recommend that those who are enjoying Burnout 3 grab themselves Burnout 2 at some point. They're completely different games.

I'm not a fan of what EA have brought to the series with the new game. Licensed music nearlt only ever works in bemani games - it certainly never works in racing titles. The DJ is unforgivable.

Was't a fan of some of the major changes at first, until I realised that this doesn't have to be a replacement for the previous games. It's more like the Street Fighter series than anything else - each episode continues to exist quite happily alongside later ones. But yeah, those changes - the purity of the previous game has been lost. The introduction of pickups, aftertouch and crashbreaker bombs in the Crash modes complicates things. Bornout 2's Crash mode was just your car and a busy stretch of road. Racing is less about pure driving skill now and more of a battle mode.

I just needed to stop thinking in Burnout 2 mode. Once I did that and accepted this as its own game, everything came together.

Apart from one change. In the previous games, you had to fill your burnout bar before you could use it. You did this by racing on the wrong side of the road, drifting and having near misses with other traffic. If you could keep on pulling these moves off while in burnout mode, you could string burnouts together, otherwise the bar emptied and you had to fill it again. It allowed for mad skillz showboating. Now all you do is keep your thumb pressed down on the A button - keeping the burnout meter full is painfully simple.

If this all sounds overly negative, it's only because I've loved this series so far. I'm sure that, given more time with it, I'll come around to the new way of thinking/playing. Co-operative and simultaneous versus Crash modes are a brilliant addition to the formula and already a firm favourite here.
