Bitchlaces reclines in his garrett and shoes away some rats from the remains of his millet porridge. As he drifts off to sleep he thinks "at this rate I'll get to sleep for a good 72 hours before there's any danger of a mafia attack. Shame about that Todd, though, I could've sworn he was guilty. I must re-think my grounds for suspicion..."

Sunrise in Granton.

The birds sing. The whistle blows. The townspeople resolutely march in to their jobs at the foundry.

But something is different.

The mayor is waiting at the entrance to the yard.

"There's been another incident. Come."

The citizens fall in step behind the mayor as he leads them to Warehouse C, Slurry Liming Kilns #7-9.

There is a smell.

And no wonder. During the night, those fell fiends stole Enamon's slurry-encrusted body from the company morgue and laid it out on the concrete floor, finger outstretched in a grisly parody of the image of God on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. And beside him, completing the unholy picture, is an equally dead Adam, face covered with a soot-smeared handkerchief.

The mayor leans over and solemnly raises the handkerchief.

The body belongs to Lionheart.

Mayor McGrant clears his throat.

"These... these scofflaws will obviously stop at nothing to terrorize our town. My town! We need to work harder to stop them in their tracks, or else... well, it could be any of us down there in the dirt! Leave no stone unturned! You are my bloodhounds! Hunt, you dogs! Hunt!

"Now, back to work!"

Blimey, I'd forgotten you lived here, Lion-o.

Ah well, hard luck, oh inconspicuous one.

Orr, can I get another shot of benylin over here please? this place is getting scary now...

Voting stats:

Todd: bjacques, iszabelle, lolita, Byron Bitchlaces, Maominstoat, Whiskey Priestess, (Lionheart), Bengali in Platforms
Bitchlaces: (Chromeo)
Lolita: Qalyn, And/Orr

Last 3 voters: Whiskey Priestess, Bengali in Platforms, & Lionheart.

But I was observing who was around during that looong night, and
personally I think we waited all that time for Bitchlaces.

So we have ten people left, including one innocent, three mafia and a doctor.

I'm kind of thinking that anyone who's mafia would have been really ultra-careful to neither foster feuds nor appear too committed to any lynching. Anyone who's been arguing really strongly for anyone to be lynched, probably isn't mafia.

We need some way to make more deductions about who's mafia. The mafia have so far killed Tez and Lionheart. Why pick those two? Tez maybe dropped too many clues that he was the detective. The mafia are also clearly trying to root out the doctor, so why would they think that Lionheart was he?

Qualyn, I can assure you that I'm not mafia. I have round-the-clock access so it definitely wasn't me you were waiting for. I wonder if all your lists aren't maybe a bit too helpful... Quite a good way of diverting suspicion. And what was all that 'split up into groups of three' about? Clearly if you persuade all the innocent villagers to vote in groups of three, but the mafia operate outside of those groups at night, so they have an advantage. It was either a very dense suggestion, or a cunning attempt at disinformation.

Whatever, you're not on my top list of suspicious characters. We still outnumber the mafia by two to one, so it's always going to be tricky to spot them at this stage. I'm sure they're lying low...

Hah hah. "Qalyn's being too helpful, let's get rid of him." Even better than, "I have no particular reason to think Todd's guilty, but let's kill him anyway." Hoser.

But, yes, I was going to say that some of us are being entirely too quiet: bjacques, lolita, BiP, the normally locquacious Chairman...

Yes indeed. Whatever happened to old Mr. Maominstoat? I miss his cheery little face.

I think maybe if the mafia were a little quicker off the mark (hint hint) people might not lose interest and wander off. Or perhaps it was the Doctor who was responsible for the dithering and flapdoodling?

In either case, we were forced to descend into lewd farce over the weekend merely to maintain a semblance of intrigue. I fear our mayor would not approve.

What an interesting and intriguing bit we have here.

I fear our mayor might well quite like it.

well, I hesitate to admit this, but I managed to reach my posting limit by 2am yesterday, so this is the first I've been able to post since then.

Tom's had me gagged in Orr's cellar all that time. God, but I'm thirsty.

Whip out that bottle of Bolly you've been hiding at the back of the fridge, Orr dahling.

Bitchlaces seems full of bustle and accusation today, think he knows something?

I'm not a mafioso. I'm a drunkard. I'd drink Italian wine if I had it, but that's as far as it goes (and way beyond my budget). If anyone's ever seen "How The Other Half Lives," well I don't live that posh. Now with the war comin' I can't get any paraffin to snort.

Sorry Qalyn, it got into my head for a second there that I should actually try and finish my degree. So I was in my hovel all weekend, hiding from the mafia and finishing my honors thesis. Sincerest apologies for not joining in the hilarity that was going on in this thread over the weekend, but if anyone believes that lack of computer time is grounds for hanging, we should all keep in mind that insane troll logic will kill us as surely as the mafia will...

Eh? Eh? Whassat? Morning, you say? Lionheart? Pah. Damn mafia, like a plague I tell you.

hmm... (snorting a swift line of slurry to get himself up to speed) bjacques has been remarkably non-committal. As has lolita nation. But then Whisky's possibly being a little too up-front... for this town anyway... and that thing about "if the mafia were a little quicker off the mark"... subtle. Or maybe not.

Well since the death of Lionheart, it appears that lurkers aren't safe either, so maybe the 'out of sight, out of the mafia's mind' plan is troll logic as well. Which sucks, cause I was getting more school work done that way.

"Out of sight, out of mind is probably more helpful to avoid lynching than to avoid the Mob - they've got an agenda and a list, while the villagers tend to go off after whoever makes the wrong kind of noise.

"At this point, I'm tending to follow Bendt's lead... Both bjacques and bitchlaces are drawing my suspicions, but I'm not sure who's the more likely candidate."

8===>Q: alyn
12:55 / 25.02.03
Huh. I thought I was being pretty mild, except as regards Byron. My insane troll logic was just that keeping quiet is the best mafia strategy right now, not that anyone who's quiet must be guilty, esp. as there are at least five people sporting the Awfully Quiet brand right now. It's just something to take into account. I'm trying to find some basis for a rational approach here. Let's not fight, okay? We can't really afford it.

Here's every reason I can think of to suspect everyone, in the order that they occur to me. You decide what's convincing.

1. Qalyn
I know y'all are thinking it: A) I tried to damage Bendt's credibility as an Innocent Villager. B) I proposed a dodgy strategy for splitting up votes. C) I've been lobbing accusations around.

(I think my defense to each of these points is already extant, but I'll repeat them if you like.)

2. Byron Bitchlaces
A) I'm not certain about this, but as far as I could tell, he was the only one not posting during the "long night" last night -- everyone else was around somewhere, here or in Conversation or somewhere -- so it appears that grant was waiting for his PM to kill Lionheart. B) The odd dissociation from the group pointed out by BC.

3. lolita nation
A) Knew Tez was a detective before he was killed. B) The whole late posting thing. C) Awfully Quiet. D) Awfully defensive.

4. Whiskey Priestess
A) Specifically held back her vote to cast it at a pivotal moment for Todd. B) An offhand remark made her a gorgeous mafia target -- attempting to draw the doctor away from BC?

5. Chairman Maominstoat
A) Uncharacteristically Quiet. B) Doesn't defend himself/staying in character in the face of serious accusations. Afraid of betraying himself?

6. bjacques
A) I dunno, is he really a drunk? Staying in character in the face of serious allegations. B) Awfully Quiet.

7. Iszabelle
A) Look at the record: influential in turning opinion. A1) A sniper -- doesn't seem to propose anything herself, but shoots down a lot of ideas.

8. Bengali in Platforms
A) Awfully Quiet. B) See 2.A). If she was over her limit, she might've been who grant was waiting on. Does the posting limit apply to PMs?

9. And/Orr
A) Awfully Quiet, in the sense of not making substantive contributions in the thread. AKA Staying in character, though no one's seriously alleged anything, so I'm not counting it as Item B).

13:12 / 25.02.03
Qualyn, that's bullshit logic - if I were mafia or doctor then you would expect me to have posted on a bunch of threads immediately after logging on and PMing grant. The other (true) explanation is that I had no need to PM grant about anything and was therefore not around on this or any other thread.

The other thing to draw attention to is that Grant has no access at the weekends and therefore we were waiting for him to get to work on monday morning before the action started.

Personally I don't have any suspicions strong enough to act on, other than suspicions about who grant might have picked to be mafia, and even those are pretty flaky.

I can however assure you all that I am nowt but a villager, as you will all find out should you choose to lynch me.

Byron, I concede to and thank you for the corrective "you would expect me to have posted on a bunch of threads immediately after logging on and PMing grant." But your second point doesn't hold up: A) We waited part of Thursday and all of Friday. B) grant says otherwise (though he could be joshing).

Our esteemed mayor posted this:
I'm usually away from the board on weekends. I'm going to try to get a lynching vote in by Monday, 18:00 EST/23:00 GMT (the end of the first Day), and get the questions/hits in by Tuesday morning, 10:00 EST/15:00 GMT (the end of the first Night). In a perfect world, all Days will end on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

and elsewhere has stated that his access is usually from work. My apologies for adding to any confusion.

Well if you bothered to check the rest of the board you'd see I posted on friday and saturday, and even started a new thread in that time, so I really can't see where you're getting your 'smoking gun' from Colonel W Qualyn....

Hello, Byron, calm down. These are meant to be things we can look at dispassionately and maybe figure something out. I did say, "I'm not certain..." and so on, and I did look but I didn't see you. You could do a lot to contribute to a reasonable discussion of the facts by showing us where you posted -- it only takes one counter-example to disprove my argument quite nicely, and I'll thank you for it in a gentlemanly, scientific manner.

Are you mad because I called you a hoser? I was just kidding around. Maybe you should call me a name back, get it out of your system.

The Widow looks at The Colonel in surprise.

"You're the reason my clothes reek of sawdust, and then you liken me to a sniper? Subtly allege that I'm a Mafia assassin?? Hmmmph. It seems to me that all I've shot down was your idea about splitting the villagers up. Is that a sore point with you???

"Yes, I've poked at Bendt once or twice, trying to goad that man into being useful. And, yes, I agitated to lynch Todd. I was wrong, and I feel horrible about it. But I wasn't part of the mob howling for Flyboy's death! I've made one mistake. As far as lynchings go, anyway.... No more lemon oil for you, you philandering old fart!"

Everyone's gettin' awful paranoid round here... what is there to worry about, other than imminent doo- oh. I see.

I'm still a little suspicious of Qalyn, over the whole splitting up thing. I was starting to suspect Byron, but his defence seems to be becoming more hysterical than I'd wager a mafioso would be (unless it's Joe Pesci, and as far as I know he's not playing). iszabelle's spat with Bendt seemed to be getting a little too personal to just be a cover-up, though it's hard to tell in plain text. I still have large doubts about Whisky, but I can't put my finger on quite why.

-URGH! Whazzat? says the Chairman, his eyes opening slowly as he's startled back to consciousness after an afternoon of slurry, unaware that he's been talking in his sleep, without any dumb-ass mannerisms.

One poster at a time ...

iszabelle: Divisive and desicive for no apparent sound reason, and is too willing to accuse Bitchlaces and bjacques when she is a major suspect of her own.

Maominstoat: Unusually quiet, yes.

BiP: Could have been the missing casting vote (re: Bitchlaces and the sexy all-nighter).

bjacques: The leading voter in the last round, reclusive and mnainly silent.

Bitchlaces: He could be bluffing, you know ...

Only in a perfect world, alas. Continue deliberating. You can make accusations at any time, but you can't unmake them. I'll amend the wiki if it doesn't already say that.

Stoatie: "I still have large doubts about Whisky, but I can't put my finger on quite why."

Oh come on, I'm sure there's lots of reasons. Perhaps it's cos I expressed interest in why you'd been so quiet recently? Or because I "held my vote back" for Todd last time, despite just going with what I'd mooted right at the beginning of the voting?

Chuh! Last time I try to actually think about what I'm doing before I cast a blindly un-analysed lynching vote.

Chairman, flimsy suspicions about me which aren't justified I really must take exception to. If you've got a good reason, by all means share it with the class, but if you're just vaguely toying with the idea that I might be murdering Mafia scum I'd prefer you kept it to yourself and didn't smear my name until you have a solid reason to.

Having said all that, I realise that it's all harmless banter, Martin, and that you were just thinking aloud. Please don't kill me.
