To be fair, as far as I can tell the people who actually read the solicits - comic shop owners and readers of Wizard - are pretty much monsters, and may not even feel pain in the manner one might expect of humans.

Had zactly the same thought as you guys. This does seem like a conspicuous retread of old ground.

But wasn't it always really obvious that Darkseid was going to pull the same stunt he did in ROA? I mean, I always thought he was. It's the execution that matters really.

Spaniel

Yes, what I meant was that ever since I first read about Darkseid's anti-life plan for Earth (weeks ago) I've been wondering about the similarities with RoA

Hm. Don't know if y'all have seen the latest "bad signal" from Warren Ellis. It can't be good for DC that their FINAL CRISIS woes are being discussed so openly by such a prominent (and outspoken) figure.

What the hell is going on at DC?

...I knew they'd
fucked up some of their big
relaunches, but my god.

Grant has to now go online to
explain that he turned in his FINAL
CRISIS scripts way ahead of time
to define the structure of the
event, but the prequel projects
all ignored the scripts? JG Jones --
who *can* hit deadlines on short
projects with the correct editorial
oversight -- is having to be assisted
by Carlos Pacheco from issue 4
of FINAL CRISIS?

Ellis goes on to defend Dan Didio and suggests the blame may lie with DC editors who are resistant to change.

Are some of them just
plain nasty and dumb enough to
say, "screw Morrison, we'll do
our own story, and if it blows his
big reveals, well, fuck ím''? I
would hope not, but it does seem
to have happened anyway.

And re: the "Rock of Ages" retread -- I kinda thought GM was intending to riff on the previously established Dark Future in a similar way to how he riffed on "Days of Future-Past" and all the other future X-Men stories in his Penultimate Post-Pocky-Clypse X-Men story from the final NEW X-MEN arc.

to tell the truth, my main complaint about FC is that there's no unstoppable Blank Wave from space consuming everything.

nostalgic and counter-producing in light of the recent cosmic status quo changes from the last crossovers, sure.

but there has been no feeling of impending doom as strong as this in superhero events. possibly ever.

Tell you what, adder, if that business about the editors is even half accurate then the lot of them should be lined up and slapped. I've complained about unprofessionalism in comics industry before now, but the fact that a seasoned pro with lots of experience of different editorial teams thinks that's plausible... well, it beggars belief, frankly. How the bastard could things get that fucked?

io9 helpfully explains the Final Crisis troubles at D.C and the rumors that, after years of fuck-uppery Dan Didio might actually be fired.

Also, can I get a whut-whut for Chuck Dixon. The guy's done his fair share of crap comics and said some bone-headed things in the past, but in his last six months at DC he bought back Spoiler, the Dibneys and Batgirl without a lick of credit for it from the comics blogosphere and had the balls to quit not one but two books when things started to go south at DC.

Anybody but me feel that as soon as Batman RIP and Final Crisis wrap Morrison will be next to go?

Meaning DiDio gets what he's always wanted: The DCU in exactly the same shape it was in about 1983.

Thanks Dan.

IIRC, in a recent interview, GM indicated that he'd keep going with Batman for about a year and otherwise stay out of mainstream DCU while he does a new wave of creator owned books.

one looks like the Alpha and the other is the Omega; so he's 'saying' I am the beginning and the end, I am the Alpha and the Omega? Just taking stabs in the dark here...

re: FC performace at the charts in particular, DC's in general. interesting bit at the Occasional Superheroine blog comments section that Journalista points us to:

“You want to know why Marvel typically outsells DC? It’s because retailers have to order $5000-$6000 retail value in product monthly in order to get their 55%, and DC only requires $3500.

“When you have that large a discrepancy in orders and as a retailer you NEED that higher discount, what are you going to order more of? I’m amazed when DC (or anyone else) actually gets anything into the top ten in orders.”

i don't know if this is out of the context of the discussion [you have to take into acount the comics' quality and the appeal of the characters to the audience as well], but it helps putting things in perspective.

I have to say, I'm tempted to take a puff on my pipe, blow smoke condescendly from my nose, and mutter "Nonsense, my dear boy. These are retailers. I'm sure they can work out that whatever discount they get doesn't matter a damn if they don't sell the blasted thing in the first place. Harumph. Harumph."

Like I say, tempted.

And then I remember that these are comic shop owners, and I feel slightly less sure of myself.

That's broadly how the discussion on Occasional Superhero goes. Brightraven, the chap who made the original statement, supports his claim with the evidence of a) a long history of peripheral involvement with the business of comic books and b) an imaginary friend who buys up the stock of comics shops who have gone bankrupt from overbuying Marvel comics to get the discount. He goes off on a bit of a weird racist rant about the Japanese, as well, but, you know, fans.

"I remember when you used to write really good comics about things instead of the equivalent of a right-wing tabloid's batshit political cartoons, Benjamin."

A) I didn't write that.
B) The Rack is fucking awesome, as illustrated not only by this strip but the 200+ strips before it.
C) Diamond's Monthly Sales charts are archaic, broken, and as of this week are officially ruining the comic book industry.
D) Does this mean you won't buy Kevin Analog if and when it comes out?

The bit I don't understand here is why these numbers are ruining the comic book industry. Could somebody explain?

Neon Snake

Argh. I am the Shamed One, Mr. WBH Project. Scoolboy error...

Brightraven's conclusions aren't the only things that are flawed (jingoistic views on the Great American Comic aside).

The effect of the discount and incentive structure make it far more profitable to order DC comics in higher volume, not Marvel. If one were to order the same amount of each, you'd make more money from the DC ones, after the discount is taken into account.

DC, basically has a far better incentive to order large quantities than Marvel.
