Just because servers didn't crash disn't mean it wasn't mass chaos. The average wait to get on the server of your choice was about 45 minutes. From there, you had two real choices:
1. Run fast as hell to the Blasted Lands and jump through the Dark Portal, or
2. Make a new character in Eversong Woods or Azuremyst Islands.
I initially ran as fast as hell to Azuremyst Islands with my main to pick up the FP and justr check out the landscape. When I found it, I decided to locate the bank and AH of the Exodar, but got lost. Exodar is like Ironforge crossed with Orgrimmar.
Guild chat was on fire about Hellfire Peninsula, so I chose option one and found myself in Draenor, where the Dark Portal is MUCH BIGGER DEAL. About 100 feet ahead of me, thrity or forty NPCs were engaged in battle with about a dozen big felguards and HUGE Pit Lord. The NPCs were 70s, the demons were skulls. The Portal landing platform is big, one side for Alliance, one side of Horde. There's a griff that sends you straight to the Alliance base, which was so packed with players and NPCs, my computer was reduced to a crawl. New profession trainers aplenty, and easily 20 quests within an arms' reach - all of which had ridiculously amazing quest reward GREENS and gold flowing like Wonka's chocolate river.
Worst of all, the terrain of Hellfire was canted and always on an angle, making battle disorienting and an already strange experience completely alien. People hit level 62 easily.
After 15 minutes of frustration, I instead chose to make my long awaited Draenei paladin and check out the starting areas. Which are beautiful. I'm level 12 and just made it to the Exodar to better explore that mess again when I signed off for lunch and to report in.
