What's your name on Nordrassil, Cube?

Cubarr. I'm up to about Level 8 now. I'll probably have a few Prowlers, Gnolls and Kobolds to hack up tonight (or at least beat ineffectually with a staff). I'll have to have a run through the whole thread and see if I can find everyone's names. I can see me buying a subscription after all this, but I think trial characters get totally deleted after the trial is up. Do other classes have all the same beginner quests? I think I'd get bored quite quick if I had to do them all a third time.

I'll pop in now and Friend you, though I haven't really got time to play before pre-nightshift sleep beckons once more.

Good Intentions -- if you're just looking to try it out before buying, there's always the option of going to a private server. they're not as good as the official version (more bugs, less players) but they're free and will give you a chance to hang around at your leisure and see if you like it.

Which you will.

(And while the morality of this is up for debate, it isn't strictly illegal as long as it's reverse engineered instead of stolen and they don't charge people for playing. Eventually you'll want to upgrade to the real thing anyway. Everyone does. I suspect these free servers are all secretly operated by Blizzard, to get people hooked.)

Gaaaaagghhh. Even the supermarket conspires against me! I decide there's no way I'm buying a full version and decide I'm going to avoid the game shops and what happens when I go to get my fruit, veg and sundry meaty items? A copy of WoW staring at me for £15. Bastaaaaards! It is now nearly 3am, I am Level 15 and I must sleep.

So are you on the main game now then Cube?

Do other classes have all the same beginner quests?

Classes do - all humans start off in Northshire Abbey and have the same quests (although some classes have unique class quests early on - like priests for example). It's the races that have different starting quests, so there's plenty of new things to do as an Elf/Troll/Dwarf, etc.

It's also worth bearing in mind that there's so many quests, there should be no reason why any two paths through the game should be the same, even if you play the same race and class.

You'll have to hurry up and get to 50 - I need hand with the terrors that lie in Un'Goro Crater.

I can so sympathise, cube! Often when I finally stopped playing, the night fas far from being dark and the birds in the backyards were chirping quite loudly. And several times, I only stopped because of the server countdown.

I am on the full game, but for some reason it's making me play out my trial period, so no trading or mail until Sunday night. Bah. It sounds as if I get to keep the same character, though.

As people might have guessed from my sudden absence from Barbelith, I've sorted out my troubles and have been sucked elbows-deep into this.

On my server, somebody started a wonderful snowball fight in Thunder Bluff the other night by pelting random passers-by until they retailiated in kind. We were all hiding behind things and running around like idiots.

Damn this game is fun. And I'm almost 50th, woot!

The in-game festivals and stuff are one of the things I absolutely adore about WoW. Likewise with the Horde necropolis that appeared a few months ago. It's quite easy to get lost in your own solo questing and your desire to reach the next level. More even than joining groups, server-wide events really do give a feel that this is actually a living world, and that you're going through all of this with other people. (Even when, as happened earlier, you log on and NOBODY in your guild is online because it's Christmas. That's NEVER happened before).

Oh, thank GOD. My trial account and first month have finally run out. Up to Level 34 and that's the way I'm staying until I sort the rest of my life out. It was fun, though.

Wise choice, cube! I recently played again for a couple of days, but thankfully only a trial version. Who knows what would have happened if Blizzard had their stuff together and using my old characters would have worked. And I´ll meet my two friends, who turned me onto WoW tomorrow, and they´ll probably try to convince me to start again, so I can be 60 in time for the addon. Alas, I shalt say thee nay!

Whoever doesn´t get to jump off before the burning crusade may be lost forever to Azeroth...

I've been off the junk for about four months now, but I'm planning on picking the habit back up the weekend Burning Crusade comes out.

After nigh-on 2 years away from MMORPGs (Dark Age of Camelot sucked too much of my life away) I wandered into Game to buy "some new game to test my new computer". I had figured on Elder Scrolls, but then, lurking behind a copy of F.E.A.R., lay a £1.49 trial of WoW. I couldn't resist...

Still trying to download the patch (the updater seems incredibly slow), but then mainline me up!

■
07:56 / 06.01.07
The patch is VERY slow (I take it this is the 1.something to 2.something patch), but you can speed it up if you find the .torrent file an open it with a proper BitTorrent client instead. Look on the forums for more details.
Confined to my flat for fear of contaminating anyone with my lurgi, I am again dipping back into the game, so I may see you there. Nordrassil seems to be the main Barb realm of choice.

Oh, is this the patch that gives you ALL the stuff that's not expansion-specific from Burning Crusade?

Blimey. Should get downloading it now, really... game comes out in less than a fortnight.

i've moved on from this junk, i swear i have. I just about kick myself when i find my mind wandering to fond memories of doing deadmines runs and wandering about ironforge. Then i think of stranglethorn vale, and want gouge my eyes out. The temptation for the burning crusade is undeniable. Don't let me buy it. please.

I bought WoW thinking I would have broadband access, but i don't (due to moving issues and my phone co being asses) and won't for a few weeks, (by which time I'l be working again).

So my question? Can I play WoW on my 50.6 Kbps dial-up connection? Or do I wait it out?

Seak
09:47 / 09.01.07
Well, it's 4 days later, and I've hit the level cap for the trial account. Went out and bought the real game, upgraded, and still seem to be on a trial account. Slightly frustrated, as am now hopelessly addicted, and in one more level I get a bear...

I seriously hope that I don't need to wait 10 more days before I can play properly again. To make matters worse, at level 20 I have to fight in the 20-29 battleground, where i get slaughtered by level 29 people the whole time. Had I stayed at 19, I could be doing the slaughtering.

I'd love to say that if I do have to wait 10 days then I'll tell them where to shove it, but I know full well that I won't. At least it would give me time to see my girlfriend and say my goodbyes before diving headling back into it.

It's probably theoretically possible, but I wouldn't risk it.

Yes, I´d also like to hear about the BC experience. I expected that the servers would crash, but apparently they didn´t. I´ve read some WoW related threads and someone has already spotted a lv 62 player!

14:01 / 17.01.07
Just because servers didn't crash disn't mean it wasn't mass chaos. The average wait to get on the server of your choice was about 45 minutes. From there, you had two real choices:

1. Run fast as hell to the Blasted Lands and jump through the Dark Portal, or

2. Make a new character in Eversong Woods or Azuremyst Islands.

I initially ran as fast as hell to Azuremyst Islands with my main to pick up the FP and justr check out the landscape. When I found it, I decided to locate the bank and AH of the Exodar, but got lost. Exodar is like Ironforge crossed with Orgrimmar.

Guild chat was on fire about Hellfire Peninsula, so I chose option one and found myself in Draenor, where the Dark Portal is MUCH BIGGER DEAL. About 100 feet ahead of me, thrity or forty NPCs were engaged in battle with about a dozen big felguards and HUGE Pit Lord. The NPCs were 70s, the demons were skulls. The Portal landing platform is big, one side for Alliance, one side of Horde. There's a griff that sends you straight to the Alliance base, which was so packed with players and NPCs, my computer was reduced to a crawl. New profession trainers aplenty, and easily 20 quests within an arms' reach - all of which had ridiculously amazing quest reward GREENS and gold flowing like Wonka's chocolate river.

Worst of all, the terrain of Hellfire was canted and always on an angle, making battle disorienting and an already strange experience completely alien. People hit level 62 easily.

After 15 minutes of frustration, I instead chose to make my long awaited Draenei paladin and check out the starting areas. Which are beautiful. I'm level 12 and just made it to the Exodar to better explore that mess again when I signed off for lunch and to report in.

Go get BC.

*weeps with jealousy* My guild was all a-crackle about it last night (i think the alts are starting to take over) so I'm hoping my buddy who bought all his friends copies of BC will deliver soon.

I've been dangling at 59 but I guess I have to put on my running shoes now.

Is Eversong as pretty as the brouchures say it is?

No server crashes? Ours crashed repeatedly all night. And when the main server wasn't crashing, the Outlands server was.

On the plus side, once we got in, the contested zones were blissfully free of high-level characters, so we could get some questing done in peace rather than living in constant fear of gankage.

I should make a character on Nordrassil...

16:29 / 17.01.07
Razzafrazzing BC and its overloading of the support people mean I've been stuck using a new character all week because Blizzard won't/can't respond to my requests to rescue my main character stuck in some sort of corrupted loop. They've even effectively taken the phones off the hook. Huff.

*sob*

I have no money.

I can neither afford to buy BC nor to actually pay off my credit card bill.

Therefore I don't get to play WoW at all until February.

Ah well. When I get paid I can both get my account going again AND be able to check out the new shit without it being crowded.

BALLS.

And there it is, one of the first 70 gamers:

He did it by constantly fighting elite mobs, while getting healed and powerups, potions, etc. by his guild friends.

He supposedly is the first 70 worldwide, on the french pvp server Archimonde.
