My guild was effectively killed by Kara. We started out as a casual leveling guild, then as many of us progressed to 70, Kara became the end-all be-all of raiding. Something we weren't prepared for. After a patchwork attempt to get everyone keyed, things started to fall apart. Too many of our tanks and priests fled to other guilds and with nothing really to do at 70 except raid, the guild began to disintegrate under that demand. I attempted to staunch the exodus by trying to consolidate our 70s to a medium raiding guild... and from there it just escalated into fragmented /gquits. The guild is a ghost of its former self and even I've left it, jaded and bitter.

For the last few weeks I've all but completely given up on WoW, as the cloud of funk about all the work I've put into my hunter (which seems to be the most disdained class) and the work into the guild itself, has made me reconsider the value of the game.

Guild destruction is very sad to hear about, and makes me a bit worried about the future (lvl 45 at the moment), since even organizing a 5 man party for Ulda or ZF is a pain in the ass, usually. Which begs the questions: Is raiding truly necessary at 70 or can fun still be had without it?

19:08 / 19.07.07
That's truly debatable.

It comes down to who you play with, and what you -collectively- play for.

Raiding, for me as a druid, is the only opportunity I truly get to fully stretch my shapeshifting capabilities. Otherwise, I'm resigned to healing my party, or tanking for my party, or DPSing. Until a bossfight, natch.

Burning Crusade is an amazing expanse of territory that can be a blast to quest through. There are over a dozen new factions to grind reputation to experience and obtain new content. Most factions have an epic weapon or epic item that can benefit a casual player. I can probably suggest a few priorities if I knew your class. While the new factions like Skyguard and Ogri'La offer lots of interesting new opportunities, the game only progresses through raiding.

I can understand Blizzard's theoretical reasoning. As we leveled to 70, we basically has 5-mans, and the next progressive step would be a more complex raid for 2 of those teams: a 10-man. But Blizzard did NOT count on the old raiding guilds doing their best to take care of each other through the grind to 70, composing groups of rotating DPS with solid tank/healer teams. How does a 20+ guild with 2 primary healers and 2 tanks choose who gets to go to Karazhan? It certianly cant be through first come first serve - which is what killed my guild.

In actuality, I blame my guild's death on the poor leadership of my GM. I had developed a systematic approach to working in DPS the same way we had done instances, but the 7-day timer required a LOT of patience.

Don't dismay. Blizzard is losing money, and gaining ire. Changes come with patches, and the timer is being looked at.

I'm surprised you're having trouble with ZF. That and SM are all anyone seems to run on my server. It was my curiosity for infrequented instances like RFK and ST that had me waiting for-ever.

That's an interesting problem for you, the life of a Druid, which I can't imagine is easy. Beyond being hard to play, it's one of those classes like Shaman that fall in that inbetween area that some people are snobs about.

The low number of tanks and healers is a big strategic headache of organizing parties, etc, at least on my server. 'LF Tank and Healer' is probably the biggest request in the channel, and I've been in parties that disintegrate if we can't find one or the other. Priest (except Shadow) and Warrior seem like the least interesting classes to me, but they are the most in-demand. It's an odd mechanic.

I'm a Mage, btw. Any preparatory BC advice would be welcome. Still got 15 levels to go before getting there, but I'm excited/worried about the 50-60 range. Do I have the patience and tolerance to deal with the Blackrock sequence of instances and raids? I guess I'll find out. Outland does seem like a good goal to get to. The money and loot jumps astronomically I've heard.

Just get to 58 and from there to the Outlands. BRD is worth some Outlands entering gear but the greens are divine and plentiful once you're out there.

BC makes all the old 55+ questing obsolete.

As a clothie, the first question I have is... Are you a tailor???

Cause if you are, or are so inclined to retrain your professions, the epic sets made from tailoring are better then your Dungeon Tier 3 sets, and in some opinions, better than your token Epic Tier 4 set. If interested, I should mention that choosing which of the tailored sets fits your spec and playstyle. As a druid, I take spec VERY seriously and cautiously, but as a mage, you may feel more willing to try out new spells and such.

Spellfire = Fire and Arcane mages, Destruction warlocks
Frozen Shadoweave = Affliction warlocks, Frost mages, Shadow priests
Primal Mooncloth = Holy priest

Depending also on your spec and playstyle should inform you which enchants and gem modifiers to look for. Rule of thumb is that Spellfire look for +crit, FSW look for +damage/+penetration, but I always suggest a healthy balance.

Reputations for Mages are fairly straightforward. Work on Keepers of Time for the revered +damage sword and exalted trinket, Sha'tar for the revered trinket and head glyph, and Honor Hold for the exalted +damage sword. When earning reputations, aim for instancing until the Normal kills stop giving reputation, THEN begin questing in its corresponding areas. It will speed up the gain.

Prior to adventuring through the Dark Portal, try to maximize your reputation with Argent Dawn and Cenarion Circle. That means questing in the Plaguelands and Silithus. Recently, the rep gain in both those zones were dramatically increased, and rumor has it both will figure prominently in further expansions. (CC = Emerald Dream, AD = Northrend) Dont hold me to it though. It's just better to level to 61, 62 before going in. Allows for an easier time killing mobs, plus more money once you do hit 70.

I hear you on boring warriors. I found myself toying with a warrior alt a while back and got him all the way to 40 before putting him down for a bit. I chose to go as flat as possible with him, making him a Human. After a while, he DID establish his own persona. Erthas is a lot more boy scout than I want him to be, a lot more careless, and a lot less angry than I would expect to have him become. It's fascinating how all my toons GROW personalities as I play them.

I haven't taken Tailoring yet, but I intend to. I wanted to play around with Engineering because it's just kind of entertaining. It's not a serious profession for upper levels, but at the moment, I derive a lot of joy from my Gnomish Death Ray and Gnomish Battle Chicken (he gains Chicken Fury! Watch out!). I was talking to a 70 mage, and he basically advised me to keep Engineering til 60 because the trinkets come in very handy up til then, but at 60, take Tailoring and Enchanting. He's all decked out in the Spellfire stuff, etc.

I actually haven't started any alts, but I think I'm gonna grab BC soon and start a Draenei Shaman, mostly because Draenei are just super ace looking. I wish my mage was a Draenei, haha. I like casters much more than melee. It's more suited to my style, I think. I also am thinking of starting a Shadow Priest, cause they seem excessively dangerous when played right.

Also, I'm a little tired of being a short little gnome, haha. I wish I could change my race but keep all my accomplishments for a small fee.

Thanks for your advice on leveling to the Dark Portal and what to focus on after I get there. I haven't heard about those factions factoring into future expansions, although I have heard about each of those possible expansions in detail.

The answer to your prayers is a Draenei shadow priest.

Not do they look, dance, and talk fucking amazing, but the priest racials for Draenei are stupidly superior. Fear Ward, the buff that launched a thousand ships, and Symbol of Hope, a party-wide innervate. Add in the Gift of Naaru mana-less self-HoT, and jewelcrafting's Jade Owl and Stone Statues...

I'm jealous of the fun you'll be having. My preist a little troll. My draenei is a paladin. They all have backstories for why I chose them and how I play them, but I still grow envious of those who chose "correctly".

Yeah, Draenei Shadow Priest sounds like a great idea. Maximum wickedness! It kind of boggles my mind that SPs have high DPS. Even though the healing isn't being worked on in that build, you still have some healing powers. Win-win. Although I've heard that SPs aren't favored in endgame.

I do like my little Masaru...it's nice when a giant fiery boulder comes hurling out of a gnome at someone and wrecks their day, but I think gnomes get picked on more in the long run... I think I picked him cause of the Intellect boost, the engineering boost and the Escape Artist racial. Plus I wanted an elderly little wizard guy like out of a movie, haha.

Shadow Priests aren't favored in endgame because the endgame is rushed. People think that once you hit 70, you should run off to Kara and Gruul, and get loots and be back in time for dinner.

What SHOULD happen is that at 70, you switch goals toward self-perfection. Begin by grinding for your dungeon set, grind some more for Epic faction weapons, grind more for mats for gems and enchants to optimize your gear. If you're a hybrid, grind for your alternate dungeon set, if you're a flat class, you grind for an alternate armor set. An ideal Kara raid would consist of a hunter with a boar, a single rogue, a prot warr, a deep fire mage, a deep affliction lock, a deep feral druid, a holy/ret paladin, a elemental/resto shaman, a shadow priest, and a holy priest.

It's due to the fact that many classes go in unprepared and unaware of each classes responsibilities that healers get blamed for not healing. Flexibility an communication is key, but paramount is a well-rounded raid make-up.

Who's already done Gruul's Lair? My guild is raiding it tomorrow for the first time and I is skeered.

Incidentally, regarding some earlier comments about Kara - IME you don't have to have two priests if you have, say, a couple of reasonably skilled pallys or druids, particularly if you have a druid who's specced resto. And respeccing for raiding purposes isn't really that expensive, either, so if people need to shuffle around a bit to make the party effective, it's not unreasonable to do that...

Chad, I've started up a Draenei Shadow Priest... or, rather just a Priest at the moment, since he's only level 10. It's been quite fun, and I'm definitely liking dipping into this alt when I want something a little more light than playing my mage. Thanks for the push on that.

My mage is on 48 now, and I'm finally feeling like my gear is somewhat decent. I'm certainly not twinked out with crazy enchantments and stuff (jeez, enchantments are expensive), but he's doing fairly well. Going to spend awhile in BGs, i think. If anyone has any pointers, here's my armory profile

It looks like my next major moves are Maraudon, Sunken Temple, and, then, eventually Blackrock Depths. Looking forward to it.

Likewise, I've also started playing my priest, Irth'jin, as he'd been sitting in the Valley of Trials for FAR too long. I'm 12 now, and collecting quests for RFC. As my mains are all Alliance tanks, my Horde are all DPS fiends. I've worked up a orc lock, tauren shammy, belf mage, and undead rogue to 20, and after Irth'jin joins them, I'll decide which I want to work on.

It's interesting that of all the classes, mages and priests feel somewhat interchangeable. Obviously, one is offensive and the other is defensive, but neither seem to be able to take on more than one mob successfully. I'm sure you have more insight, but my lowbie experiences are the only thing I have to inform me. Both are heavy drinkers, wear paper armor and zap baddies. Hopefully soon something will distinguish the two classes.

(I put my first talents points in Spirit Tap in the Shadow Tree. The mana regen seems the smart thing to do.)

Well...with my mage, I can usually scrape by fighting 2 mobs at my level, 3 if they are a couple levels below. With my priest, so far it's been knock-down drag-out against only 1. The reason is completely crowd control. Polymorph, Frost Nova, Arcane Explosion, and Blast Wave make it possible to take on more than one if you have your wits about you. Priest has no crowd control that I can determine.

16:54 / 30.07.07
You know, it's a matter of environment!

I leveled my mage in Ghostlands, where polymorph is useless against Undead. And my priest is in The Barrens, where he can't mind control, shackle or anything but run from Beasts.

Haha, I didn't think of that, but you're completely right. That would make a huge difference in leveling a mage.

So, in other news, it seems likely we will be getting a new expansion announced this weekend, and all signs point to Northrend.

I'm really hoping this is a new continent with mid-range content, and now just 60-70+ content, but that doesn't seem likely.

All DO signs point to Northrend, but...

I'd be sorely disappointed.

I can see them opening PARTS of Northrend, similarly to how we have access to everything in Kalimdor save Hyjal. Only this would be a much smaller reveal. I mean, unless they're going to raise the level cap, I don't want to fight through 7-8 new zones of "trash mobs".

I can see the Alliance getting a boat from Theramore that takes them to the Howling Fjords of Eastern Northrend, where they can explore the Argent Dawn's outpost and fight the 70+ Scourge. The Horde would get a zeppelin from Undercity to Coldarra, where the Argent Dawn has a treaty with the Tuskarr. Both factions would have acces to the Dragonblight between the two "starting" Northrend zones, but areas like Icecrown would remain unreachable —for the time being.

Personally, I'd prefer them to "expand" the Azeroth and Kalimdor realms to each server with a complete recoding. Old Azeroth is fun its own way, but Outland puts it to shame. First order of business would be the remapping, allowing flying mounts access to the world. That, in itself, is an enormous undertaking, but the opportunities it presents are well worth it. Recoding terrain would allow them to input a lumbering mechanism on some of the trees, allowing for a new Wood Working profession.

There are several areas currently untouched by the game that a remap could allow access, similarly to how flying mounts are the only way to Skettis and Ogri'la. I'd like to see the Gnomish Tram lead somewhere new, possibly to their underwater colony, hinted at in the current aquarium stretch of the subway.

As far as mid-level content, I don't think there's any frontier, save more instances. And there are already LOTS of instances. Yes, people are bored with current questlines, but that's the thing. Most questlines are boring, and end in unsatisfactory ways. If the Scythe of Elune had something to do with Silverpine, or the Syndicate lead to Garona, or Uldum and Timbermaw Hold did something more than just be, we'd all be a bit happier. I dont know. I'm excited to hear what may be coming, but I HOPE we aren't sent to the Frozen North for 70-80, or even worse, 30-58.

I think it all looks pretty wicked. And I'm more excited about this stuff than Burning Crusade, to be honest. I really like the look of the new environments, whereas Burning Crusade has always struck me as a bit over the top in some ways (not that I've experienced much of it yet).

And the Death Knight hero class seems quite cool. It's not going to ruin everyone's game. It's a mega-reward for dedicated players. That's fine.

There is a ton of whining on the official forums about how all their lootz are worthless now. WTF? They are completely great for level 70 playing. But Blizzard just expanded the game, so naturally, it means going forward. The logic people saying "I quit. This ruins the game and cheats me." really confuses me. I find it hard to say why it confuses me, but it seems very precious, and not at all in the spirt of constant progress. Isn't it good to know there is always going to be more content, items, abilities, etc to go after?

No kidding there. I'm balance-spec, and the first question I hear when applying to a new guild, without fail, is "Would you be willing to respec?"

There's been TONS of leather spl dmg + gear since BC dropped, dammit. We can do decent damage, too...

Hmm. On the new expansion, I had kind of thought it might be something along the lines of 'Draenei get their ships repaired, and take the top heroes space trippin' with them.' Completely forgot about Arthas.

Meh. I had hopes Blizzard would learn from the mistakes of the Burning Crusade. The overwhelming criticism was the lack of even a minimum of mid-level content.

-Now before I rant too deeply, it appears that the business philosophy of Blizzard is to continue only with the new, and those that buy the original game will still have the addictive experience we did Pre-TBC. The game, as I assume they see it, appears to be for those who play to progress a single character. It's understandable, as that's one perspective many have. However, the majority of subscribers are %casual% players who rarely progress all the way to 70, much less 80.

The word Expansion OBVIOUSLY means the game will expand and improve into higher levels, higher difficulty, higher content. But WoW isn't necessarily just a game to progress in for people. It's an MMO and has an enormous social aspect. Adding new mid-level content could be done easily, and has been done in the past through large patches. I think that, at base minimum, would be a few additional NPC questlines to spice up the old zones.

The beauty parlor is an addition to the game that is a LONG time coming, but I would anticipate a hundred ways this could go sour. First is the level minimum to use it. I can only hope it is a capability available, and affordable to lower levels. Secondly is the parlors' location, it better not be ONLY in Dalaran. Third is the relative minimum of available new options. Unless there's at least 5 new hairstyles for the original 8 races, it's going to miss the mark.

The notion of the Epic Class is warming up to me. I initially didn't like the idea of a Hero class starting out at 55-60 because it's exactly those lower levels that NEED an additional tank class, not the raiders with mandated prots and holies. If the Hero is meant to allow for the exploration of the game through a new class, why only allow the Hero to experience levels already dominated by the laws of TBC 5-Mans? And the rune-resource seems overly complicated and far too slow to maintain aggro. Aside from these concerns, it's sounding more appealing.

Overall, I'm disappointed with Blizzards Dungeon design team, as they continually make it difficult for me to find a place in the game. I WANT to be moonkin as well, and have done an enormous amount of work to collect the gear and craft the items suggested to be a DOOMkin powerhouse. I'm persoanlly abhorrent to using cloth for gear, but the +damage on leather does pale in comparison to the cloth, specifically in raid dungeons. Horrible itemization strikes again. Also, as many know, a DPS caster regardless of utility MUST have a viable source of crowd control. Cyclone is too short, and Roots is unavailable in most dungeons. Altering both and developing +damage leather would let moonkins come to raids.

Zul'Aman, like Zul'Gurub and Zul'Farrak, will be an outside instance, allowing for roots. One can only hope caster leather will drop there.

I look forward to Northrend, but I worry that much snow, ice, and chilly temperatures will depress me further.

Yeah, I'm underimpressed and practically done with this game. The lack of mid-level content and trade of social/fun gaming for the hardcore raiders... feh. Why bother? I've sunk enough time into it as it is.

Definitely won't be picking up the next expansion.

DOOMkins... man, I was doing Arathi Basin this week quite a bit, and one night, there were a pair of moonkins were absolutely wrecking shit. They'd bam in 2-3 shots of their lightning from the clear blue sky.

(Speaking of AB...2 days in a row, the Alliance in my bracket were trouncing Horde... that rarely ever happens. One brilliant player suggested a plan that made us win over and over again. I took into the second day and suggested it and we kept winning. I couldn't believe it. It felt great, and finally got me my Fear and Stun dispelling trinket. Hooray!)

New mid-level content. Yes, I was severely hoping for new mid-level content, but instead of being depressed and disappointed, Northrend just looks too interesting to me, and makes me want to level quicker to get there. It's made me more interested in progressing actually. I'm not sure I'm made for the big time raider life, but you can be a quester and still level through Outland and into Northrend. I like that aspect. 5-man dungeons are fun enough for me.

I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of event they come up with. Apparently, before the expansion there will be a big AQ style event. Arthas will be doing something that incites the Alliance and Horde to go to Northrend. Speaking as someone who has missed the past server/realm events, I can't wait.

It's the fact that there is so much already interesting and exciting in the Old World that hasn't been fulfilled, that many long-time players are depressed and disappointed with Blizzard's follow-through.

As a lore-interested druid, the biggest disappointment or me was the Sunken Temple quest that leads one to pledge loyalty to Ysera's green dragonflight. And then it just ENDS in Winterspring. No bossfight, no promise for the future, nothing but a thanks, see ya later, here's your 38 silver.

Anyone who's suffered through Uldaman and ventured all the way to Uldum for more of the Dwarven heritage storyline knows the kind of frustration I'm speaking of. Quests fall flat.

While most of Burning Crusade quests have exceptional follow thru, it's also a different planet. Those of us who've enjoyed Azeroth proper wish that Blizzard had enough honor to not necessarily go back, but to tie up the plot threads they've left open.

In other words: More neW-X-Men, less Claremont.

I've been playing WoW for a few months now, and coming from RuneScape back in 2004-06, the thing that really impressed me was the community. I play on a private server, so my opinions on the matter may be a bit biased.

Honestly, I wasn't sure about getting the game at first. "Who wants to play a game where people treat you like crap?" was my first thought, but I found the community to be amazing; I was greeted in /world like a longtime member of the server, people started sending me free stuff, and nearly everyone was extremely nice. The only problem I've seen is just one user who started yelling stupidity like "OMG ALLYNCE SUX HOARD RULZ!"

As for the game engine itself, everything is beautifully done. The little additions like schools of fish in the water and mice in the underground train station really add to the reality. The game's battle animations are amazing, and battle is an engaging experience. I can't really comment on the sound since I have my own music playing instead of the ingame soundtrack, but the small amount of it I've heard was great.

I play on Hav0c's server as a Night Elf druid named Cosby.

Well, that's my sub cancelled. As I've said before, I'd really have thought that MMORPGs should be able to include at least some form of rewarding, entertaining solo play in them - and yeh, I know that the clue's in the title, but still. There are just far too many limitations on the solo player.

Why, for example, can't I train up in any non-combat profession beyond a certain level without going out and levelling up through combat first? Why, when it comes to that, does your overall character level only increase through combat experience in the first place?

Common faults with games right across the genre. I know the kind of things I'd like to see in an MMORPG, but they're not here and I can't see them anywhere else right now, either.

Even with the fact that I've not enjoyed the game at all for the last... two months or more - I've logged in every now and again to see if some time away has made me view it any differently, but it's only made it worse - cancelling the sub was, weirdly, a bit of a wrench, albeit only in a very minor way. The number of hours put in, now with nothing to show for them bar some screen grabs that I took, with no hope of returning to the characters I was developing. And the slightly disturbing edge of pleading in Blizzard's cancellation pages, which try their damndest to pluck at yr guilt strings.

But no. I've not enjoyed it - even when I thought I was having fun, I wonder if I really was, or if I was telling myself over and over 'THIS IS FUN'. Lots of games feature downtime activities, but this felt like there was never anything *but* downtime - there's a really weird disconnect in the combat, for example, that makes it feel more like a minigame than meat and potatoes gaming. And it's not just because of the indirect nature of the control, either.

Rambling now. Anyway, who wants my stuff?

There's a beer festival.

There are quests involving animals you have to hunt which you can only see when you're drunk. Everyone in Ironforge is shitfaced. And on the hour, Dark Iron dwarves turn up with an illegal still (and I think you have to chuck beer mugs at them).

And I've just joined a newer and chattier guild, so the social aspect's back as well.

I'm hooked again though. But it's very boring seeing as I'm 4 hours behind the UK by the time I get home most people are in bed and I have to run around solo. Not so bad at the weekends but it's a little boring during the week.

I'm also eagerly awaiting hunting the headless horseman on Hallowe'en.

See it's these little things that give the impression of a real world. Even a salty old sea dog like myself can find fun after grinding and raiding, to come to Stormwind and see everyone getting sloshed or throwing snowballs at each other or whatever.

See I disagree with Honolulu's reasons for stopping playing - Breaking it down, the main thrust of the game for me is 'instances' and the group dynamic of that, be it battlegrounds, raids or dungeons and the social problem solving and teamwork that come with them.

The rest is like a large array of minigames - Some are boring - grinding for money, grinding quests; and some more fun - interesting quests or ones that add to the lore of the place, exploring and attacking enemy towns, Even fishing when I'm in the mood!. And the festivals are part of the fun downtime - the feeling that everyone else is running around just having a laugh too is one of the things that keeps me coming back.

I think some Pics of Brewfest would go down a treat.

Will see what I can do tonight (have to go out in an hour, so booting up WoW would be BAD).

Funny Brewfest anecdote- I got so shitfaced that the blurring and motion effects ended up with me getting on the wrong boat when I was trying to get to one of the Brewfest sites. It's EXACTLY like real life.
