Well, if you really want it and are prepared to make an effort, you could twink and level a disposable alt just to get that gear for you (unless it's BoE).

But what gear are we talking about here? Eyepatches and Jolly Roger hats like that Tauren in Booty Bay has? Personally I wouldn't bother for less than a wooden leg and a really mean-looking hook...

This game is the reason I haven't posted on Barbelith, touched my Xbox, watched any television or read a comic book in three-plus weeks.

It's a sickness. Of the awesome variety. I ditched my old level 23 pally and rolled up a new (identical) pally on a PvP server that my friends play on. I'm now level 38 and obsessing over how I'm going to scare up the cash for plate armor and a mount in two levels. I've stopped blacksmithing entirely, and am selling the materials I mine on the AH for a ridiculous profit. I'm currently grinding away in that little spider cave in Dustwallow Marsh, because it has easy enemies that give good XP, and, more importantly, mithril spawns there.

I am, however, in a quandary at the moment. I have beaten all of the single-player quests I had in Dustwallow, Desolace, Arathi and Stranglethorn, which seem to be the only places suitable for my level. Now, all I have are group quests, and playing with other people annoys me 99% of the time. There's too much standing around and waiting for some jackass to get done at the AH or whatever. I can typically level much faster on my own than in a group, but I have no more quests. Am I missing someplace? I've never run out of yellow/orange single-player quests before, certainly not without attaining a sufficient level to move on to a new area and get more. Am I just going to have to suck it up and play in a group until I level up enough to go to the Hinterlands or wherever?

PvP is fast becoming my favorite part of the game. I can consistently take out allies 3-4 levels above me, solo, but my favorite part is hunting the Alliance with my buddy, who plays a rogue. Nothing like charging into battle against two Allies like a suicidal fool, only to have my buddy materialize and massacre one of them, just leaving one poor guy to mop up. It's cruel and tons of fun.

PUGs or pick-up groups are the worst thing about instance running. The. worst. That's why I've been hammering my guild about running with each other. Because friends don't let friends drink and PUG.

At 38-40 you should be probing Feralas, just south of Desolace or Tanaris, south of the Shimmering Flats (you'll get your first dose of ally Gadgetzan rooftop snipers there, the cheating bastards) and eventually Zul'Farak.

BTW, on a separate note... ravagers suck as pets. Health points are far too low to PvE or PvP. One of those 'looks neat, sucks where it counts' kinda pets.

I ended up trading my Jalapeno for a sleek Bloodmaul Worg. Back in business.

I made a hellish run from Grom'Gol to the Badlands to get new quests. I had no business in Burning Steppes or Searing Gorge. Cue the bubble/run like fuck combo. Gorgeous landscapes, though, like Mordor. Wreaked a little havoc in Lakeshire on the way through, though, and that was fun. I was happy just to pass through, unmolested, but a small pack of 18-22s got the bright idea to try to take me on, and I positively savaged them. It was very satisfying- I felt like a GOD, striking down mewling mortals.

The guards got me when I got a little cocky, though. Those dudes do not fuck around. I suppose they put them there so bastards like me can't just stroll through town and indiscriminately kill very low levels. Pah.

Side note: Mist, there's some dude on my server that has your name, letter for letter. I asked him if he was you, before I remembered that you're German and the servers are regional. Weird.

I thankfully managed to stop playing a couple of months ago. So, you´re right, that wasn´t me.

I don´t know if I will be able to resist the Shadows of Angmar scheduled to be released next month, though!

But Mistoffelees is of course a cool name (props to T.S. Eliot), so I´m not surprised to find posters and players with "my" name on the net from time to time.

You should find lots of quests for lv 38+ in Booty Bay (especially in the pub) though. Stranglehold is one part of Azeroth that was polluted with quests.

"I suppose they put them there so bastards like me can't just stroll through town and indiscriminately kill very low levels. Pah."

You can't attack opposing faction members in their home territory unless they flag themselves for PvP first (usually by attacking you). Of course, there's always at least one idiot who'll go for it.
(old semi-griefing trick: low lvl horde walking through Goldshire, until someone takes a swing at them and thereby activates their PvP... at which point the horde player's lvl60 rogue pal plants a dagger in said someone's back)

Smart players will simply ignore you and you can't touch them.

I used to love sneaking my Undead warlock through Elwynn Forest and sneaking up on some unsuspecting newbies along the way. There's nothing like thinking you're perfectly safe and all is well, only to turn around and bump into a corpse on a Dreadsteed. (And no, I didn't kill them. Just scared them a bit. Well, sometimes a lot. But that's all.)

So, I should ding 40 today, finally, and that leads me to my next question: Is the only difference between mounts aesthetic? I'm revered in both Silvermoon and Undercity, and I think my pally would look wicked riding on one of those skeletal horses.

Also, what third-party add-ons shouldn't one live without? I have none at the moment.

If you're revered with both, then yeah, go with the mount you like the best.

I'm trying to get my tauren on a Swift Razzashi Raptor m'self.

Insofar as mods go, I personally can't live without CT Mod's Mail and Map mods. Been trying to find a decent multiple action bar mod of late without success (So many hunter powers! So little room!)

Those with Hybrid classes, or prefer to have crit gear separate from defense gear, look into Outfitter, a mod that equips different armor with the flip of a switch.

I JUST GOT A QUEST TO FIND A SAMOPHLANGE!!!

Okay, it's grey, there is absolutely no point in me doing it, but I just have to.

The guy even says "what the heck is a Samophlange"?

If only there's a megacondenser somewhere...

Level 40 is ace. Especially the fact that pallys get mounts free, so those 80Gs I saved up got to go towards shiny new plate armor.

It's really a massive jump in power- I'm brutalizing Allies so much more efficiently. I just dinged 41, and found a polearm in Uldaman that makes me want to ding 42 that much quicker. This game is so crack.

Urgh. The LOTR game looks awful. Pretty, but the combat looks stilted and dull. I was hoping it had potential to steer me away from WoW, which has gotten increasingly boring over the last couple weeks.

*sigh* Maybe I just need to find a late-night guild.

Okay, quick question: Does blacksmithing suck?

I never make anything worth using, and I can make much more money on the AH selling the raw materials than I can finished products. I haven't worked on raising it in a while because it seems so pointless, so my rating is languishing at 173, while my Mining (which makes me all of my money, basically) is now up to 223. No one in my guild or on the trade channels is ever looking for a blacksmith, so I can't even use the skill altruistically.

I really want to dump it as a skill, because it brings me no joy or profit. Should I, or does it get better later on? And if I do drop it, what should I pick up? Jewelcrafting seems a natural fit with Mining, but I'd prefer to be an enchanter. Are Enchanting and Mining incompatible?

Right, now that I finally have the kit to do it justice I've made a start on this. Initial impressions are that, in terms of actual play mechanics, it's the same as every other MMORPG ever. If I'd been expecting anything else I'd have been disappointed, but forunately I wasn't.

It's all about the look, isn't it? The colours, for a start. I've plumped for an Undead Rogue as my starting character and the colours in the sky in the opening area are wonderful - a sort of chalky, minty green. The cartoony stylings of the characters and world... well, I've been searching for a decent comparison for a couple of years and the best I can come up with is that the people in the game look like 50% The Incredibles, 50% Nightmare Before Christmas. There are few other games that translate the promotional art into in-game art so effectively.

So that's where I'm coming from with this - it's more about the exploration than anything else, in my book. The game is an essential part of that, because you're not going to be able to explore unless you level up and get yourself decked out with high quality gear, but I'd be quite happy just having the world to wander around in without any of the traditional gameplay trappings in there.

Most telling event so far was discovering an airship and the fact that I could sit right at the front of it and watch the world go past in real time (well, for the minute or so before the loading screen stuck its ugly nose in), and frantically searching for the Print Screen key so that I could capture the moment for posterity.

Okay, I'm not sure if you lot are still doing the party thing, but I've now got two characters, both on Nodrassil. Chumbucket is a Gnome Mage and Eggers is an Undead Rogue. If that means anything to anybody, I'll gladly hook up with you - tbh, I'm already beginning to find the grinding for Eggers (who's currently trying too hard to get from level 11 to level 12) a bit too much of a slog, even if it is far more lenient than other MMORPGs I've played, and I need somebody else to provide some inspiration.

Mages seem to have it so much easier than Rogues, right from the off. A one-on-one battle with anything even the same level as Eggers tends to go right to the nail, whereas Chumbucket's kicking arse that's a couple of levels higher than his own without breaking a sweat.

To be fair, I don't think the game really gets into its stride until lvl 10-20 for new players, when you get most of your firsts:

It's then you get your first talents on your chosen skill tree, that you can do PVP (well, Warsong Gulch) and that your professions start properly kicking in. It's also the best time to go exploring and realise how seamlessly massive the place is. It is also the time you get your first dungeon instance (and your first armour set for rogues if you can be bothered) and for me was when I saw my first city. I'm sure I didn't get my fishing rod until level 11 as well. Although for all the good it did. My highest fishing skill is 16....

Grinding is a slog for all levels, and the lvl 60-70 quests seem to have run out of ideas a little. Fortunately there's still enough to keep you going with exploring, dungeons and raiding. Plus the new team PVP stuff. And there's nothing better than just getting 30 of you together and going to smash up a horde city.

Like you say, it doesn't differ from other MMORPGs in terms of the grind, but there's enough to do with the above to intersperse the choppy-choppy bits with other pasttimes.

Smashing up an Alliance city? ...although it's interesting to note that the Horde cities seem a bit more vulnerable to attack than the Alliance ones. The Undercity and Orgrimmar both have a main entrance and a back door, and Thunder Bluff has two elevators, whereas Stormwind, Darnassus and Ironforge only have one entrance (discounting the tram between Stormwind and Ironforge, which would require a prospective attacker to fight their way through the entirety of one city in order to launch a "surprise" attack on the other). Unless I've missed something, of course.

I'd reiterate that the game really does get better when you hit the top level. It seems like a slog to get to 70...because it is...but when you get there, you've only just started. That sounds awful if you dont see when the end is coming, but it really is the start of all the fun and proper group play and all the really cool stuff.

Also, if any of you fancy playing horde, I'm in an ok guild on Bloodfeather.

Ah, my subscription ran out about a week ago. Straight away I bought another 60 days, and then decided to see just how long I could wait before activating it. Managed 6 days (largely thanks to having S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to take the edge off), and have been playing constantly since.

I keep crawling out, but it keeps pulling me back in...

Okay, quick question: Does blacksmithing suck?

What's your class? I'm smithing better gear for myself than I ever seem to get out of instances, but maybe that's because I only run something once, for the quests (apparently most people run a dungeon over and over until they get the piece they want...)

my smithing's at 220+ right now and I can build stuff I can't even wear yet (38 paladin).

if you were just doing it to earn money, then yeah - I don't see that being a good idea. mining and AH will get you more.

enchanting's kind of a solo profession, all your material comes from disenchanting junk you don't want. on the other hand, I think it's the worst possible profession in terms of making money - more like you're losing money because you're not selling all those greens any more.

Having watched the South Park episode last night, I'm now sorely tempted.

This is possibly a bit deciding to give heroin a road test after seeing 'Trainspotting', but what would I need to get started? I try and write (although this might be the first thing to go, I appreciate) on a laptop with a broadband connection and Windows XP - would that be all right, or would I need a full-size computer?

I'm pretty much comprehensively ignorant when it comes to this kind of thing.

Depending on the laptop, it's doable to run WoW, though most don't have the best graphics card (Running my Warcraft on my ANCIENT iBook G4 barely gets me by, though WoW on the newer Macbooks looks gorgeous).

Do you happen to know what model laptop it is and/or about how old it is?
