I imagine I have some major power leveling to do to catch you folks though.

We agreed on having level 15 at most, when we play again, so don´t worry about catching up.

So, did Team America play this weekend? I was in NYC. So far it looks like we're a herd of four bulls?

Me, Mouse, Gridley and Heiro... Anyone else? And can we persuade them to be our tank?

I made Barbefunds an undead warrior. Can concentrate on him a little this week.

Mouse and I did a bit of grinding (a bit is putting it mildly) and I think we're both at lvl 7 or 8. Trying to amass some money to dole out to US Barbefolks for weapons, training and the like.

I propose we meet this Saturday afternoon and evening, any ol' time.

We should probably start prefixing these though, it's true!

[random musing]Actually, we should maybe start separate threads, if the other G&G mods don't mind? One (or two) for the Barbe-WoW fun, and one for just discussing the game? Or is that pointless, seeing as anyone who's playing it already has no reason not to be in one of our gangs? Actually, we're probably okay as we are aren't we? Sorry. I've been drinking, smoking and playing WoW all day.[/random musing]

I went on this afternoon and am now level 8- a few more days like that and I should have caught up to all you 12-15s in time for the weekend.

Was strange going back to my main character (31) afterwards though- after an hour or so (in roughly the same area) killing beasts (that had been pwning my gnome) FOR MEAT!!! with, like, two arrows, I started getting this whole superhero feeling. Then I went on a mission and got my ass kicked.

The same thing happened to me this evening, stoatie!

I had played some quests in Dun M, and then helped someone with my main 47 warlock do the same quests. I didn´t even have to use magic. I simply hit the mobs with my staff and they fell over.

Then I played Ulldaman with some people, and I was a bit out of my depth. They wer fighting like crazy, told me stuff I didn´t know yet, and told me they were watching football and chatting with friends while playing!

BTW, when you need help or just for fun, I´ll join your char in leveling up.

So for anyone who's interested, we kind of agreed on a few interesting little constraints to make playing together better, which was before the end of a game we'd agree at the maximum level we could all be by the next week - this time it's lvl 15 - so that if people need to catch up during the week they can do, or if they miss a group thing. Also vaguely agreeing not to do too many quests outside the territories we've been in so far, so that we can go and do them all together. That's about it. I'm trying to get my char up to fifteen ish by next weekend, so that we're all roughly of a level.

So that'll be the same rules for Yseramericans? Independant leveling to 15, then it's group quests only in Mulgore only?

I'll put together a United States of Horde icon and a Gneuropean icon as well. We'll post them when necessary. Stoaties alternative G&G threads bear more discussion though.

EUROPE GROUP

We could go to Darkshore next! I collected a dozen quests there and the mobs are tame. It would be a change from doing Westfall quests to get to level 20.

But that's a trek through Wetlands, with the killer spiders! Why not just stay in town and try Loch Modan? I cleaned that place up with my Nelf when he was 12-18 in a weekend. Darkshore is nice though. So far, I've been to every races levels and now I'm up to AH, STV, and Desolace. Each is kind of boring for me, but that COULD be the mid-grind lulls setting in. I suppose I should shut up and stick to Warsong.

I had a little chuckles earlier.

I'd gone back to Ironforge to work on the usual Crazy Gnomish Contraptions, spent loads of cash, and realised I had only a moderate amount left. Wait a moment, I thought, I'm playing a Rogue, innit? and started begging in the auction house, in my own inimitable style. No luck (friggin' capitalist pig-dogs were all heavily engaged making money) so I moved outside, and made a reasonable amount, although considering the number of people in town who must've had gold coming out of their ears maybe it wasn't too much.

Anyway, I got into a long (IC.. ish) conversation in the middle of Ironforge with a few people, and then Mist came along and we toddled off to Dun Tinkerin or whatever it's called.

At which point someone sent me a whisper.

"why u use good english?" he sa.

"Pardon?" I repli.

"u r using teh full stops and capitals" he sa.

"Well... I like to."

"but dont u get annoyd" he sa, "what lvl r u, is this ur 1st char".

Chiz chiz chiz! I thought the world was going down the pan what with all these new-fangled mobile telephones and all, but seriously... has proper Engelska become such a rarity that it arouses this intense curiosity when used?! That typing properly implies n00b!11!1 status? Sheesh...

Mind you, I don't think it's an RP server. Maybe I should take my snooty standards elsewhere.

Surely you're joking, Mister Mistoffelees? Darkshore is brimful of murderous murlocs, furious furbolgs, nasty nagas, crazy cultists and worse. And, uh, besides, it's damp and cold. Mind you, there's probably tin in them thar hills.

Bah, that´s no problem. I had already reached every port and many gryphon stations by my lonesome and yesterday evening, Starstruck and me visited Menethil, so she´s got the ports now, too!

Surely you're joking, Mister Mistoffelees? Darkshore is brimful of murderous murlocs, furious furbolgs, nasty nagas, crazy cultists and worse.

And Darkwood has really mellow monsters about level 11 - 16. Probably the first country the elves visit after coming out of their tree.

Work. I hate that word. As I hate peace, horde and Montagues! If you don´t reach 15, np, your fellow Barb players will surely help you get ex points by some fun questing.

I propose we meet this Saturday afternoon and evening, any ol' time.

Can't really guarantee any degree of punctuality (I share the game with a housemate and we're in the middle of trying to pack for a move) but I'll do my best. Just no more swoop hunting, m'kay?

Though if the others need swoopy things I guess I could help out.

I'm still zero. I'll need help if I'm to move quickly through quests.

Has everyone seen/listened to this? The guy's kinda silly and vurry americano, but he's informative as all get out about roles in groups and schtuff. I'd love to get together and try out macros and other strategies this weekend if anyone is up for it.

So haven't checked in on this thread for ages, been super busy with funerals and putting a show together, but I do have some questions;

1. If you're all Gnomes how do you find the questing without say, a priest? In fact a healer of any kind!

2. What level are you all now? (working out if I can catch up on a new char)

3. What is a normal (PVE) server like to play on? I usually play on PVP servers so I can either get ganked or do the ganking... Plus you know World PVP rocks! But anyway yeah how is that server? Maturity, AH, etc?

I'm with Stoat on this one. If no one else minds, I'm gonna whip up two new threads, one for UK WoW players and one for Stateside players. It'll help focus discussion/meeting times, etc for everyone.

Why must we suffer these, when Blizz could make a killing with plush Murloc toys for kis and adults? They could release a different coloration for each area Murlocs are found in and you know people would buy each and every one.

Anyone else has a lot of problems with installing the new patch?

Here, the fora were full of complaints, and I did something not so thought through, and it resulted in me having to install the game anew. And that means instaed of a 153 mb patch I need 449 mb. Oh my.

On the other hand, I just now telephoned a friend who´s a 60 paladin and he´s very enthusiastic about all the changes the patch brought along.

No probs with the patch yet, other than wondering WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST, DID ANYONE THINK IT'D BE A GOOD IDEA TO MAKE THE LFG CHANNEL GLOBAL???

Now it's the only global channel, everyone's using it for general chat, and the fights between spammers and LFGers are really off-putting. Fortunately someone explained to me how to leave a channel this afternoon.

Let's get serious for a moment. Just cause tho I love the game, there's a few things that chafe me.

Is anyone serious disturbed by the "bouncing Night Elf females"?

Seeing as how the Night Elf population is primarily a humorless and somewhat sexless lot — according to the lore — it's irritating to say the least that when the character is "at rest", instead of doing the shrug or sighs found in other races, the Nelf women jump up and down excitedly. This action makes their breasts bounce.

Miracles of gaming animation aside, as I love that Urth's ears bounce when he runs, it's a little disgusting that Blizzard felt it was "ok" to include the action as a little joke. I don't mind finding an innkeeper with the last name of Bates, or a fisherman by the name of Jason Mathers, but it's a different, more crude and more limited humor that designed the Girls Gone Wild jump.

That is just the most specific issue.

Overall, the females of each race, not including Gnomes and Dwarves, are "sexy"... Orcs and Trolls are the most significant departure from the base physiology we're used to. I play as a female Troll, and she might as well be a punk Night Elf. Male Trolls are all crouching and gangly and huge. Why weren't female trolls considered the same? For a game I admire for its artistry and creativity, I'm disappointed with the fact that female characters are not considered "safe" to be creative with physiology.

Why aren't female Orcs hulking behemoths like their brothers? They look like twigs next to their men.

Then there's the race equivalency thing too, as well as the whole voodoo/cannibalism/island-evil thing. With the game becoming as big as it is... I'd expect a more considered approach.

As a comics reader I can see the similarities between one prevailing sexist environment to the next, but I'm teribly interested in female perspectives of the superhero comics world and now the gaming world. Does Barbelith have any female players? What are your thoughts?

Mouse
18:28 / 26.06.06
Why no mention of the M/F tauren differences? Female tauren are tiny next to the males.

Aertho
18:50 / 26.06.06
So are cows next to bulls. Slimmed down and sexified, of course, but there's a reference and basic mammalian anatomy that's used to draw from.

Now the same argument can be used for Orce and Trolls, but both of those races are distinctly different than most fantasy based descriptions. Orcs in LOTRs seem more like Undead elves, correct? A more creative exploration of both races is welcomed, if not expected.

In any case, you're right to include Tauren females.

Kiltartan Cross
06:47 / 27.06.06
I spent considerable effort creating the ugliest gnome (gnomic?) and undead female avatars available, feeling it my bounden duty to do so both because the uniform bouncy "sexiness" was a little annoying and to mentally put one over these clowns.

I didn't find the troll/voodoo connection particularly offensive, just silly. Especially as it offered the opportunity to start a troll called Gerald... I did find it strange that the Tauren females had humanoid breasts; bit of a waste, I thought, udders would've been much cooler. The Tauren dimorphism didn't bother me in the slightest, although it was interesting that the overwhelming majority of Tauren players were playing bulls not coos. Not as overwhelming as the male Dwarven majority, though. I'm not sure I've ever noticed a female Dwarf being played, although there must be some somewhere. And they don't even have beards, for shame!

Orcs in LOTRs seem more like Undead elves, correct?

Elves, yes, not undead but twisted by Evil; although I'm not sure JRRT ever addressed the issue of where all the orc women hang out, or where the little baby orcs live, or how they can hold their society together despite living in caves and barren wastelands and preferring stomping about in armour to making a living for themselves. I think the best explanation he offered was that half of Mordor isn't actually an ashen wasteland, but endless grain fields worked by toiling slaves, or something like that.

(Part of the reason I have dislike for LOTR, and affection for WoW's lore. I played W:RoC and FT at the time the LOTR trilogy came out, and found the Ring's Orcs' motivations lacking. At least in WoW, there's culture. No one's "good"; no one's "evil". All the races have issues, victim chic, and a history to be proud of as well as make up for.

As a matter of fact, I think the only "Good" race is Tauren.)

gridley
15:28 / 27.06.06
I think the only "Good" race is Tauren

But even the mostly noble Taurens aren't portrayed as COMPLETELY good. Don't forget the evil Grimtotem clan that menace parts of Stonetalon, Ferales, and 1000 Needles.

That complexity is nice. Like the fact that Taurens and Night Elves live in relative peace together in Moonglade.

Aertho
16:24 / 27.06.06
Well right. Magatha Grimtotem's a classic powerhungry villainess. I'm most impressed by my alchemy trainer who is impassioned to discover a way to use the gifts of the Earthmother to cure the afflicted Undead. Nevermind the Undead don't think they're anything wrong with them... They just want to "live" freely.

And that's another thing thats great! That the world is this living thing where obvious politics are discovered in the NPC story. Like you can totally root for the Orcs while they deal with dissenters to clan unity and a history of demonic influence. And wonder what the hell is up with Stormwind to have neglected their lower states... That's just the 2 major races. Trolls suddenly have thousands of years of civil unrest and tribal warfare, of which playables are only one. Dwarves are driving themselves to explore the past in mining for achaeology... for reasons I don't quite understand. It's great. And makes me wonder if there's a chance Blizz might flip the script and change allegiances sometime in the future.

Like Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, Trolls, and Humans versus Undead, Draenei, Belves, Nelves, and Tauren. That'd be crazy, and entirely something plausible in the lore.
