Missed last nights eviction...so did Mary have anything interesting to say in her interview with Davina? Was she suitably 'scary' as she exited the house?

Smoothly
13:17 / 04.06.05
She was scary in an Evanescence kinda way, which I think is quite scary.
She didn't have anything particularly interesting to say. She felt 'grand' and was pleased not to get as much booing as she expected (because she 'tried to be truthful and always spoke her mind', and I guess she thinks that's unpopular with the public).
She thought Anthony, Saskia, and Sam nominated her, and was 'disappointed' in 'snake-in-the-grass' Makosi when the truth was revealed, but reckoned that it was because Makosi thought she was a 'strong person' (?). She didn't trust Saskia, could see through her, and didn't feel there was any honest communication; she thinks Anthony is shallow and can't look beyond the surface of women; her relationship with Roberto was 'messed up', but Maxwell surprised her because she had thought she hated 'lads' lads' ('Maxwell thinks he fancies a certain type of girl, but really he wants someone with depth to bring that out of himself'); she can't make her mind up about Derek; Vanessa hasn't come out of her shell or done anything yet; Science has proved to her that you can't put all black rappers into one box.
She wants to stay in touch with Kemal and perhaps Derek. She didn't need to cast any spells in the house, because 'there's enough rope in there for them to hang themselves'.
She went in the house for a combination of personal growth and the money. The experience has taught her not to judge a book by the cover and not to let her emotions overcome her.

A fairly standard first-evictee performance.

Missed this, but was Mary told that she shouldn't really have been up for eviction in the first place ?

And if so, what did she think that said about her mad occult powerz ?

Smoothly
13:28 / 04.06.05
She didn't seem to take her mad occult powerz terribly seriously, to be honest (but did she ever?). She was told about Makosi's secret mission, and while she was disapppointed in Makosi (whom she seemed to have really liked before knowing that), she didn't seem bitter and was mostly relieved that she only got one nomination after all.

We'll never know, but I wonder how things would have gone if those originally nominated had remained so. (Assuming that Makosi would have been nominated naturally anyway.) I think having a first week nomination has really put a dent in Craig's behaviour - we saw a lot of anger from him and Mary originally.

If Sam, Roberto and Makosi had gone up for nomination who would have left? Would Sam do anything more than wear a bikini and scowl? Would Roberto be less chummy?

Yes, but having survived that first-week nomination will, I expect, boost Craig's confidence. Despite his confusing audition video, he's someone who's quite needy in terms of getting reassurance that he's liked/accepted. Staying in should provide him with some of that reassurance.

But only liked in terms of the general public. Mary seemed to have worked out that about four in the house people nominated her, and you might assume that Craig went through the same mental checklist. No matter how boyed up he is that he is less hated than Mary, there's still that nagging reminder that he was one of the two most disliked housemates in the first week.

I used to work at Number Ten... I could possibly get you the phone number, if you liked... Oh no, God, I couldn't ! "

Die, die, why won't you please die, you fucking cunt.

'Pologies, but I did need to get that off my chest.

Also, there's nothing in the history of violent cinema that even vaguely compares to what I'd like to see happen to Science.

19:54 / 04.06.05
Sure. The two systems (internal - how much your housemates do/don't like you - and external - how much the Great British Public do/don't like you) do intersect and influence one another, though, and Craig's likely to derive some positive reassurance from the situation even if Makosi doesn't come clean about her role. He certainly seems to have been revitalised by the experience.

Craig probably has some kind of sketchy self justification logic working right now. Well either that or he's snivelling again.

20:18 / 04.06.05
Snivelling he is not, corrected I stand, revitalised he is.
Craig's greatest asset/biggest flaw in the house is his ability for shaky self justification though it eventually becomes so thin even in his eyes that it erupts in rage and/or "the snivelling", still his trite demonisation of those who don't like him is strangely compelling.
Hopefully when he watches himself on BB post-house it will be a much needed trip to Selfawaria but unfortunately I don't think he's going to go there during his house stay. If he does he probably won't win but it would be brilliant television.

Ganesh

I'm sure he'll be snivelling again, soon enough. Someone will look away when he's in the middle of an anecdote and thus destroy his life.

Excellent Charlie Brooker in today's The Guide.

His real name's Kieran. Science is his "street name". His "screen name" is Prick.

Science seems to spend 70% of his time shouting at Kemal (cross-dressing Leo Sayer lookalike), and the remaining 30% shouting at everyone else - shouting about how no one but him understands what it's like "in the hood"...

Still, you can't fault Science's intentions. He's not there to get his mug on the box - no. He's there to "represent the ghetto", which, if he's genuinely representative, is full of pretentious hotheads throwing juvenile tantrums when they don't get salad cream with their fish fingers.

Re. Smoothly’s round-up, I find that Mary is a strange mixture of cliches and unexpected opinions. She can reel out the usual crap about telling the truth and being a ‘strong person’ (why would anyone say that of themselves when it’s always used as a euphemism for being difficult?), but then has unusual insights into other housemates (like her remarks about Maxwell’s depth). I would say that she’s just trying to be interesting, but she does seem to have put some real thought into these things.

I was most baffled, as I’m sure everyone was, by her praise of Science. I’ve not been a dedicated viewer at all, but from what I’ve seen, and read on this thread, he seems to be pretty useless. And she actually described him as “mature” and “intelligent”, which seems to me like nothing more than a fantasy. Can anyone think of any basis for these comments?

Finally, as for occult powers, I was struck by her responses to Davina’s quips about casting spells. She seemed somewhat embarassed by them, and avoided the real point of the questions in a way that suggests there is actually nothing to talk about. And after she mentioned not putting Science in a box, Davina commented about how maybe we’ve learned not to put witches in a box as well, and how we’ve learnt something about it. Well, I haven’t. I have learnt precisely nothing about what being a witch actually means or what it means to Mary. Not that it bothers me, I’m not really that interested, but still, if you’re going to talk yourself up as being this or that, you should have some substance to back it up.

Nina – how do you feel about this now that you’ve seen the exit interview (?), do you still think Ganesh and others (like myself) have been unjustified in thinking that Mary’s witchiness is just an act?

Googled Craig Coates, looking for some background on the hairdressing business, but didn't find that. Did find the majority of references identifying him as one of the two gay contestants in BB6.

And some references to his father, Jonathan, 40, having tried to get into the house too, with a Father and son in it together tagline.

As far as I can tell, there was a plot to (oh, my aching sides) rush into the bedroom and throw waterbombs at the sleeping Derek (apparently Moonpig was allowed to bring waterbombs into the House). When it came down to it, Anthony and Roberto (and, I think, Maxwell) were having cold feet, and swithering about it.

Science took a ghettoesque stand, arguing that waterbombing Derek wasn't fair. He demonstrated this by fetching the waterbombs and throwing them at Moonpig, who wasn't happy. An argument ensued, with Maxwell being particularly vocal. Science was asked by Big Brother to sleep in the loft, where he's been ranting (or possibly freestyling) his innocence to the cameras.

Now read on.

A fuller description, courtesy of Digital Spy:

Recap on "Watergate Incident/Science"

--

The group got pretty drunk on cider. An idea was floated that Derek, who had gone to bed early (as normal), should be waterbombed. Lesley has brought waterbombs in her suitcase.

The group seemed to be up for it, but a few people were a little unsure:

- Roberto
- Science
- Anthony

Roberto aired his concerns, but then stepped back and let the group continue. Anthony also aired his concerns. Science argued that people are allowed to air their concerns and it changes nothing about who they are.

Maxwell took Anthony outside for a "1 on 1" and when he came back in, Anthony said he was up for doing it. Maxwell had been telling people that the plan would be as follows:

'All go to the DR, all cram into the DR, hold the door open, send someone (Sam) to the bedroom, water bomb Derek, then Sam runs back to the DR. Maxwell however was slipping in that they'd close the door before Sam got to the DR.' <--- This seemed to get Anthony on side.

Science left the living room saying he would show them. Upon his return, he threw several waterbombs at the group. Lesley was caught by one, and seemed pissed off that she was now "soaked". Science said that this proves a point, that it's no fun to be soaked, and that if they can't take it why are they discussing doing it to Derek. Science said that he wants no more stress, that he thinks its a bad idea to do it to Derek like this while hes sleeping. Science said if they want to soak anyone, soak him instead of Derek.

This seemed to defuse the general idea of waterbombing derek.

Science has expressed that he has a problem with people being two faced. He had a problem with Anthony and Roberto being against the idea one minute, then seemingly with it the next. He also felt that if people can't take it, why give it out (Lesley getting angry she was soaked). He also seems to have had a problem with Maxwell trying to talk people round.

Derek was breifed of the idea later. Says he would have taken it very badly, esspecially if Sam "The Lizard" threw the waterbomb. Derek feels that Makosi should have stepped in to protect Science during all of this. Derek seems to be on the side of Science, and feels the idea in general was wrong, and an "arrestable offence" if it happened in the street.

Science possibly took his argument for far too long and may have earned himself quite a few nominations tonight sadly.

Science in general was very stressed by the end of his arguments and BB called him to the DR.

Verdict: Funny idea at the time, would have made for classic BB entertainment. Science probably earned himself quite a few nominations, although Saskia seems to agree with Science. Derek disapproved of the plot, but was reasonable as about it as he could be.

So there we have it.

Science taking the group position of magistrate?. Heaven help us.

Unlike antics with mates there's no option to "not talk to them in a huff" for a few days while you cool off. You've gotta see 'em day in, day out.

In the house it would've been funny in the short-term, destructive in the long-term. Signs people getting well sick of the arguing now?

Michelle, I believe it's because Science made/makes such a big deal out of his status as "someone representin' da ghetto" when even the idea of ghettos (in the American sense of the word) in England is laughable.

Regrettable Juvenilia
12:58 / 05.06.05
Er, no, it's not. This is a matter for another thread, but... I'm not saying Science has any connection, but to say there are no ghettos in the UK is just ignorant.

Ganesh
13:20 / 05.06.05
I don't think there are no areas of deprivation, etc., etc. in the UK, but I think the term "ghetto" is loaded (perhaps overloaded) with associations of Americanness - so that juxtaposing that with someone from Leeds who rants for a good half hour at the iniquity of being denied salad cream to go with his fish fingers makes me laugh, and want to take the piss.

Oooh, interesting. As winner of the counting task, Saskia is allowed to listen in on one of her housemates via a secret Diary Room link/monitor, and ask that housemate three questions, presumably in the voice of Big Brother.

It'll be interesting if she chooses Max, given that he seems to be smitten with her in a Cockernee chimney sweep/Mary Pawpins kinda way. They could be this years Mollusc/Stu pairing. Photospreads, poster campaigns for the BNP and defiantly-Caucasian bigot-babies await.

Alternatively, given her feelings about bogus asylum-seekers, Saskia might be tempted to keep an eye on one of her browner fellows, in case they're eating swans on the sly.

For those sensible enough not to waste their lives on this tat, and even though I know she's dead to us now, and with apologies to Stoat, who shouldn't have to read this stuff twice, from today's 'Star';

Mary reckons she's been abducted by little green men many times and on at least one of those occasions an alien might have enjoyed a raunchy romp with her.

She said: "I am pretty sure that, like humans, they are sexual beings.
"I could well have had some kind of relationship with one of them during my abduction, who knows ? I never will.
"I've been abducted several times and the last time was about 18 months ago. I was lying in my bed and saw this bright white light outside my window.
"The next thing I can remember is waking up the next morning with a really bad headache...
"I do think there are good aliens out there who genuinely want to learn about useful information about us. And I think this is why they have taken me several times - because I know so much."

She'd have started an orgy in the house if she'd been allowed to stay there, yadda, yadda, yadda, but she did fancy Roberto !

"We blew hot and cold," she says "But there was definitely a spark between us."

In your face, Dr G !

( Erm, not Roberto's come, that is... )
