from aintitcool, so you have to turn down the nerdgasm buzz volume:

Hey folks, Harry here... It's 2pm, I've just gotten home and I'm on such a buzz from BNAT - that I figured I'd do a very quick rundown of what played.

[...]

I was not prepared for V FOR VENDETTA. This is the most intense cinematic cry for Anarchy since A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. They made the comic. Alan Moore is a bitch for even thinking of bitching about this. It is fucking PERFECT! When you see them promoting it as UNCOMPROMISED VISION. That's absolutely right. This thing doesn't give two shakes of a pecker what the modern world is going to think. THEY NAILED IT! You never see V's face. The voice - PERFECT. Natalie Portman - BRILLIANT. Everybody PERFECT. Adrian Biddle's last film as DP is a revelation and a revolution! This was my favorite film of the festival. They finally fucking nailed ALAN MOORE! Wachowski's - do WATCHMEN! PLEASE! When this film opens - this will be a political molotov cocktail. Absolutely fucking great! It isn't the action film that the first MATRIX was - but it is easily a vastly more important and brilliant film.

Interesting...hopefully Harry is somewhat on target here.

They finally fucking nailed ALAN MOORE!

In the same sense that the Romans nailed Jesus?

Or the way in which Harry 'nailed' a large rock of crack into his crack-pipe before writing that.

Wachowski's - do WATCHMEN! PLEASE!

It should perhaps be noted that Harry Knowles is something of an ass. For more information...

Again, not that AICN is any sort of reliable source, but it's more than just Knowles praising the film - there's several gushingly enthiusiastic reviews over there.

I remain skeptical, but it's certainly interesting...

New trailer. Has a few scenes from the very first teaser but still looks solid. Yeah. yeah.

Solid? At the risk of sounding like I've gotten into Harry Knowle's enormous bag of Crack, I'd say it looks sweet, maybe even spectacular. I'd even say it looks uncompromising, but, as ever the proof will cost ten dollars plus popcorn.

Is there some kind of problem with the Apple version Hector?

sleaze, since the arrival of the latest Quicktime averybody with an OS older than Windows XP can't run it... therefore Apple's trailers site is now useless for some people.

Had a look at both trailers there...it looks, and sounds pretty decent. They've kept the English setting, Weaving and Portman sound (in terms of the accents they're using) like a pretty good fit. Did V do so much twirly knife stuff in the book...? I know this got mentioned upthread somewhere, but the fancy knifey bits seem a bit unnecessary to me. But on the whole...a tentative thumbs up from me, 'specially since it reminds me a little of Richard III. Though that might be because "big brother"* looks a little like Ian McKellen...

*Sorry, I've forgotten the character's name...

Ah right - am using a relatively new Mac so was unaware that the apple sit have become effectively unusable...

Back on topic - I'm still not very optimistic. Stephen Rea looks evocatively disheveled as Finch but, well, the army of V scene, unless it is a dream sequence, looks like it will destroy any integrity the film might possess up to that point. My disappointedment will be amplified if the destruction of Parliament is moved to the final act, as opposed to being part of the opening salvo...

I guess I am reduced to hoping that they don't fuck up the whole Valerie stuff too badly...

Oh, fuck, yes, the Army of V. That's just awful.

hmm

i'm really disappointed in the way that they have changed the Voice stuff. Looks like they have turned it into a more Big Brother TV type of deal. I always enjoyed the very radio-specific effect of an disembodied voice for the government's official public face. it was an interesting parallel of V's somewhat disembodied voice.

also, it looks like they have changed chemical weapons stuff around a bit to be more about the government doing tests on the population as a whole. odd.

It looks ok...has potential. They set V up as a bit too Batman-y in terms of the clips they present him in, it seems. I haven't read the original book in a while, gotta re-read soon.

I will say, though, that it is encouraging to see a trailer of a movie seemingly so devoted to questioning the gov't in this day and age, pointing out the gov't use of fear and paranoia and constant claims of national security against terrorism, etc. It seems like a healthy perspective to have out there; one that we here in the US don't get enough of. Even if the movie is mediocre, at least it's a major film with a big star getting that message out there.

You can tell a million stories with that perspective without "nailing" Alan Moore. Some sets look like they were pulled from the panels. I won't say that there are not some promising bits but the awful bits are a bit overwhelming. (V army, Natalie Portman's accent/voice, knife-time, big brother as opposed to disembodied voice)

Natalie Portman's accent is fine, what is not fine is it looks like they've done away with the whole 'do you want to have sex with me? I mean for money...' bit and now she's just in violation of curfew.
Also, 100,000 seems a bit of an under-estimation for the number of people the Party is supposed to have killed, seeing as it's supposed to be everybody who's non-white, gay or left-leaning. My guess is it's been re-written without death camps, so now the government accidentally released a virus which killed 100,000 people (hence the petri dishes and stuff) and V is the only survivor. Still, I remain optimistic.

I would suggest "Quicktime Alternative." It's free, regularly updated, doesn't hang, can work in nearly any player, and is small with none of the regular fuckups induced by Apple's Quicktime. Plays mov's, and I believe hdmov's as well. There is also a "Real Alternative" for those times I forced to relive 1993 and watch RM's. Check www.free-codecs.com .

guys (n dolls) - trailers remind me of 'The player' and the action movie ending with Bruce Willis.

saw this trailer in the theater last night in front of Syriana, and I noticed something I hadn't seen before. V's mask is... bulletproof.

I'm not sure why this bugs me so much, but it does. I guess it actually makes some sort of sense, but...there is something gimmicky about it.

its like... a metaphor! deep an shit yeah?

Like yknow Vs mask is like bulletproof, and like "Vis an idea, and you cant kill an idea" and like everyone wears a V mask at the end because yknw its like deep...

Them Waholskis are proper philosophical, im sure thats how theyve described themsleves in interviews anyway.

That's one way of putting it

(And, for the record, I'm not being trans-phobic here. A sex change is a perfectly valid lifestyle choice for anyone who isn't a greasy comics dork whose career trajectory seems to be headed towards crawling up Grant Morrison's bum and living there)

I couldn't care less about any o' that...

I just want V the movie to be not a complete pile of shit... I guess the benchmark here for missing the point would be Judge Dredd... I want this movie to be not as bad as Judge Dredd...

This might not be an incredibly high aspiration, but it is, I feel, one that is achievable...

If you want some more info on Larry, here's the Rolling Stone article that was mentioned by Fox News. It's certainly an interesting read, I'd love to see what Andy Wachowski thinks of this whole thing, and how it's affected their creative partnership, but their press silence makes that pretty unlikely.
