Guv, there weren't nuthin' wrong with the way what Lost was shown on the telly. I spoke t' the Queen (everyone knows the Queen here. Personally) and she loiked it!

Unconvincing accents caught my ears as well as the unconvincing 'london' stuff - Des and his girl were meant to be on the south bank, but there ain't no architecture like that on the south bank.

Exactly, it was that sequence in particular (as well as the sports bar with a huge union flag) that dislodged me from thinking "this must be set in London". Which is weird, because there are shots of Penny walking along what does look like the South Bank, with the Houses of P in the background, cut with the fakey shots of the glass dome and funny brick building where their photograph is taken. If they could set up the former, I don't know why they couldn't have an appropriate background for the latter.

I can't believe I'm coming to the defense of Lost, but you guys are being a bit too critical. Come on. I'm sure the Lost fans in Korea (if there are any) got ticked off about the Sun/Jin flashbacks, too.

19:11 / 26.02.07
No, that's entirely true and I wasn't being critical ~ it's just the first time I've ever seen a scene supposedly set in London that wasn't actually filmed there. I'm sure it happens to people from other cities all the time (eg. most of X-Files was shot in Vancouver).

Betcha that's not true.

Butter, I think it's 'cause most Brits are used to seeing piss poor representations of the UK in American shows/comics/stuff. It's not a huge issue, it's not going to ruin a show for me (unless it's truly excessive), I just find it irritating.

If any koreans want to moan I'm fine with that. In fact I found myself wondering how Thais would respond to last week's episode - it was rather exoticising (is that a word?).

Well, I don't know, Boboss... it's hard to set something in London and film it somewhere else, and not have it look fake; as that episode demonstrated even through a few interiors and street shots. Lostpedia points out that they even spelled "honor" wrong on the recruiting poster.

Oh, hang on. Much of Doctor Who, of course, was shot in Cardiff but set in London, and looked sort of OK except that Cardiff houses are an entirely different style.

So, you're kind of right so far in that I have seen more fake Londons than I thought! No others immediately spring to mind, though.

PS. I don't want to keep on about this, but Penny offers to take Desmond for "lobsters on the pier". I don't think anyone refers to anywhere on London's South Bank as "the pier", do they? Maybe I'm wrong.

I'm going to go on a Lost pilgrimage on the South Bank "pier" to find the "Oxford Circus News Agent".

As I understand it, MW, it's pretty common for things to be filmed at locations other than where they're 'supposed' to be for all kinds of logistical and financial reasons. I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I think it stands to reason that other cities/backlots/studios have stood in for London on numerous occasions.

I want to go back and check out that Charlie episode that's set in London now.

Speaking of last week's episode...

Wow. How can this show survive with such a fan base, when great shows like Arrested Development get cancelled after gaining zero audience? It makes no sense to me...last week's episode was awful. What's more, it was borderline racist, presenting an image of "those weird Asians" that would've been accepted I don't know, maybe a few decades back."

Several lines of "my people will not accept this," etc...

Truly terrible.

But hey, at least we solved the mystery of HOW JACK GOT HIS TATTOOS! God knows I stayed up night upon night, wondering the answer to that riddle.

And also, why were the tattoos written in Chinese characters, when he got them in Thailand?

And beyond that, the creators are just so clueless. They show all these "pining away looking at the stars" shots of Alex and her boyfriend...characters we could really give a shit about.

It's sad. After the kinda okay preceding two episodes, Lost has landed right square back in "pretentious but stupid" territory. With the fanbase slipping every week, I wonder how long they can hold on.

Maybe because the actress who played the tattooist, Bai Ling, is Chinese.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that episode was total shit.

You're comparing a small web community with Nielsen ratings. Numbers for Lost are dropping. This explains the near-desperate "Producers explain Lost" program the other week, where the producers came on and patted themselves on the back over the fantastic show they'd created, while promising that things would be solved eventually. This is also why the show's been moved back an hour, so as not to compete with that American Idol garbage, which ABC is certain would kick Lost's ass in the ratings.

The tattoo characters don't (apparently) actually mean anything like "he is among us, but walks alone", or whatever the script suggested.

Actually on my downloads there are fan-written French subtitles, which makes it even more interesting in terms of interpretation ~ you can tell who addresses whom formally and informally (eg. Jack vousvoies his captors, but they tutoie him) and admire or puzzle over the translations of Sawyer's obsessive nicknaming (Freckles --> Punky)

I'm not sure Jack's comments were quite so ambiguously annoying. It was made pretty clear that the symbols are emblematic of his inner leaderliness.

"he is among us, but walks alone" fits that bill, as far as I'm concerned. Just another way of saying it's lonely at the top.

Do the writers of this show really believe Jack's "at the top"? Really? He's a douchebag with a useful skill and has been since at least the end of the first season...by the end of the second I was under the impression that the writers were with me on this one, that they'd grown as sick of Jack as I and everyone else I know had and were having some fun beating up on him for being such an undeserved-messiah-complex toolbox. But it seems like the third season is being written by a whole new set of (less interesting and intelligent) people from scattered notes left behind by the original staff. Ugh. And I'd forgive it all if Sayid would just spend a single episode with his shirt off. TV!

07:23 / 28.02.07
Well, to be fair there's always been a tension in Lost between peoples' inner douchebagness and their DESTINY (when discussing DESTINY I feel caps are important). Lost is really big on fate and folk being the right man in the right place at the right time and stuff like that, so basically, just because Jack has a messiah complex, doesn't mean he isn't DESTINED to be a leader of men.

Well, let's see, I think the thing that bugs me the most is that it contributed absolutely nothing of value to either Hurley's character or the larger narrative, that couldn't have been accomplished in five minutes instead of treading water for a full hour. It had cheesy dialogue, terrible pacing, a non-climax of riding a fucking van around in a circle, and the standard closing shock cliffhanger was meant to be a surprise to...who? Us? The audience? We've known for months that Alex was Rousseau's daughter. It's a lame cliffhanger when the surprise is directed to one of the characters but it's old news to us.

Also my girlfriend, who is Korean, pointed out the stupidity/ignorance of Sawyer teaching Jin what "beer" means because "beer" is printed in English on every beer can in Korea.

I have to agree with Cameron. What a waste of an episode... I TIVO'd it for my SO but told him not to bother wasting 44 minutes of his life. We already knew that Hurley won the lottery and had a streak of bad luck, did we need a whole episode to learn that Cheech was his absentee dad? We learned nothing new about Hurley except that, while as a lad he worked on cars, he would grow up to direct Jin to fix the engine on a broken VW. And then drive in circles rather than making the screamingly obvious choice to try to explore the island further. I'm astounded that the creators would use a whole episode to studiously not advance the plot, when the series is already hanging by a thread with most viewers.

Ha, I thought this episode was great fun!

Jin already knew that it was beer, as soon as he and Hurley looked in the back of the van and grinned at each other cos "oh, beer!" and yes, Sawyer is ignorant.

I don't think it is screamingly obvious to go and explore the island further with a van, because it is a van, and it is a dense jungle-based island.

I thought it was nice to just see people hanging around again, and actually interacting. I like those bits as well... Sawyer's back! Male bonding! Beer and Bros! The importance of completely pointless tasks! Achievements! Small joys! THE VAN OF IMPORTANCE AND HOPE! I thought there was some funny dialogue, as well. I like the Jin/Hurley, Hurley/Sawyer, Jin/Sawyer, even Hurley/Charlie combos.

And it gets moved on a bit at the end, I don't think it's supposed to be a surprise revelation, it's just showing where it's headed next. I am fully not surprised by this, considering how lost has always been this way. It felt like the golf episode from the first series, plus we learn someone else has daddy issues.

I think it was a breath of fresh air after the "Jack's tattoo" episode, and I cared nary a jot about the lack of plot because I thought it was fun.

You've gotta have hope, guys!

This was a truly fun episode, a return to many of the best elements. Not one iota of plot development re the "Mystery"... but a nice break after the recent heaviness. Lost can have such coolness at times, then veer into dumbness, then bounce back again... I guess they're juggling so many objects at once.

I think if this episode had aired in Season 1, people would've loved it. But coming now, after this so very awful season, it was a case of too little, too late.

Am I correct in reading that Lost has all-new writers this season, that all those from previous seasons are now gone? If so, this may explain why the show seems to be going in circles, retreading stuff we've already seen.

I do though love how they explained around Hurley going BACK to Australia in the flashback...I think that Season 1 (or was it 2?) flashback where Hurley went to Australia and met the widow of the guy who discovered the numbers heavily implied that THAT was the trip in which Hurley boarded the ill-fated flight which took him to the island. So this week they explained around it, with Hurley's mom: "Always with Australia." Hell, they could do another Hurley flashback (if the show lasts that long), where he goes to Australia AGAIN.

I think the whole deal with the Dharma VW Bus was because the writers had just seen Little Miss Sunshine -- probably one of the subconscious reasons Cameron above didn't like this episode, either!

>>>I don't think it is screamingly obvious to go and explore the island further with a van, because it is a van, and it is a dense jungle-based island.<<<

Except that the van was obviously used as a means of transport around the island from one outpost to another, given that it wasan official Dharma van being driven by a Dharma workman.

Well, not quite. There's such a thing as narrative momentum and episodes like this, at this stage, just kill it. The story grinds to a halt for no good reason other than to draw out the series and the overall pacing of the show gets totally fucked. It's like having an episode of 24 where Jack Bauer just sits and reads a magazine.

Lost used to have absolutely incredible, intriguing cliffhangers that made it impossible not to want to see the next episode. It was one of the things I liked the most about the show. Even the lesser episodes would always hit you in those closing seconds with one slam-bang motherfucker of a cliffhanger. I watched the first season on dvd and would end up staying awake until 5 in the morning because of those damn cliffhangers - I couldn't wait until the next episode so I'd just keep watching.
