Fact:
Everything involving Eko should have happened a season from now. As it stands, it was really well done and completely, nigh-idiotically, unprovoked. There was no motivation, in terms of Eko's character arc to date, for what he did. It was all well within his character, but there was just no reason for him to wake up and decide to die, which is precisely what happened. Eko was on a path that still had a ways to go. The moral of the story is now undeniably: DO NOT GET ARRESTED IN HAWAII. I'M FUCKING BEGGING, HERE.

The good news: I'm loving where the Juliet/Ben story is headed, even though Foxy's Jack performance is getting a bit more predictable than normal. I telegraphed nearly every reaction down to the facial tic he had when he was brought dinner. "I'm, ah, heh, not really in the mood for guessing games." Yeesh.

The er news: The Monster Is The First Evil? I'd better fucking hope not. As it stands, just on the basis of Eko's final words, it seems like it might be a cross between that and Sheeda strain, responsible in some way for the disollution of anything stable and/or orderly on that island.

I do feel that, like any other episode, I'm going to be much kinder to it on second viewing, that Hurley's plaintive "Don't die, dude" is going to bring everything around. Maybe even one day I'll watch the entire show in one big chunk and Eko's harebrained decision to spit in the island's face will seem perfectly timed.

Finger's crossed.

(Note: So, was that Hellboy in Hatch Number None?)

I dunno, but he's probably pissed his glass eye is in the Tailies hatch.

What's with all the missing eyes and eyepatches on this season of television? It's like Luis Bunuel back from the dead around here!

So the actor playing Eko was arrested in Hawaii? I didn't know that -- really don't keep up to date with the actors and their real-life shenanigans.

Anyway, so that's it for Eko. If this had happened last year, I'd be sad. But Eko was a character ruined. He started off with so much potential, but then, what with all the other characters crowding the island, he was shunted off into the background, building churches and obsessing over the button. Didn't make for riveting television.

But hey, who needs Eko? We have these two GREAT NEW CHARACTERS, this photogenic couple who've been there from the start, guys!! Who needs Eko, when this fantabulous duo tells us stuff we already know, like:

"What's Eko doing here?"

"His brother's body is in that airplane."

Or when they have such HILARIOUS lines as:

"The toilet still works."

Yep, we've got longtime characters we haven't even SEEN yet (Michael, Walt, Rose), but to hell with 'em, right? Let's just spotlight these two NEW characters! Hey, who needs to keep up with those old characters, anyway? In fact, let's just stop paying attention to Jack, Sawyer, Locke, etc...how about ALL-NEW adventures with ALL-NEW crash survivors...who've been there from the start, but just hidden in the background?

Yeah...maybe that we we can continue paddling in circles, bringing out new mysteries, instead of solving any old ones...keep the rubes sidetracked.

As much as I liked the episode I hate that they got rid of Eko, who's been my favorite character ever since they neutered Locke with that damned button. I did love that Eko bucked the trend on the island of dying when your character has some sort of epiphany and changes. It was a nice “fuck you” to the black smoke monster.

On the two new characters… whatever. I knew this was going to happen eventually. They said from the start that there were 48 survivors and that new people were going to be introduced as regulars died. They were a bit shoehorned in but again… whatever.
My interest in Lost has been waning since last season and I’m finding it hard to get worked up about things like this anymore.

I really don't understand the animosity towards the new characters. Sure they just sorta appeared and "joined in", but it's not like the writers had to bring down another plane to add more characters. In-story, Michael and Walt are gone, and IRL there was no way to hide Walt's growing spurts, so I'm not too gutted that we're not seeing them.

One thing about this episode that's got my head going a bit twisty is that it seems to me that there's not much overlap in Eko's & Jack's stories, thematically or otherwise (besides the general "family issues" stuff), yet they've both had encounters with dead relatives whose bodies aren't where they should be.

Well, to be fair, someone had told me that ABC was advertising that someone was going to die on the show in this episode. Once someone brought up the Gilgamesh stuff, I realized it had to be either Eko or Locke, and I wanted to get my reasoning why on the record before the episode aired.

I agree with buttergum's above comments.

In the past, I got goosebumps at the sound of the monster -- this time, that was lacking. Of course, how it dealt with Eko was a shocking effect, BUT:

Locke said that when he first saw the monster, it was a bright light. And it left him alone. Later, he seemed afraid of it -- why? -- and it tried to drag him underground.

Previously, Eko faced the darkcloud and held his ground with it, and his memories flashed through the cloud. It left him alone. But this time, it didn't even bother to drag him into a hole in the ground, it just... did what it did.

Is their any logic, purpose, or motivation for the black cloud?

Maybe I'm not tracking, but can someone explain what Eko did... saying he didn't sin, etc. -- pissed it off?

Are you sure Locke and Eko were talking about the monster? I got the impression they were talking about what they saw during the hatch implosion for some reason. Maybe the 2 are related somehow? Will they eventually show us what exactly happened down there? Hope so. As for chills and thrills, seeing the monster sneak up on Eko through a reflection on the pond Eko was drinking from was plenty creepy.

Locke looked as if he saw the monster retreating, when they were on unexplainedly different sides of the stream, which made me think it was about that. I hope it wasn't, for the giant piles of continuity you allude to.

When he started talking in Gethsemane it felt like a "Christianity is in yr mind / purgatory if you make it" reading of their situation, but it really hit that idea hard. In its face. And Locke was just starting to get sweet on the island again, too...

WHAT THE FUCK IS IT WITH THE DRIVING AND SHIT ALSO. MAN SERIOUSLY WHAT.

Well, mini-season over. Some spoilers.

I liked this episode and always good to see Nathan Fillion. Lots to digest. Jack is a "terrorist" doctor now and buys Kate and Sawer some time by using his doc skills for evil. Ekko left John a message (sort of). I liked this episode but it wasn't as good as I thought it'd be for a "finale" though the Sawyer on his knees in the rain was pretty damn intense for a second there... oh, and then there's the romantic ship finally sailing. Thoughts?

Very nice to see them finally building a strong character arc for someone that carries through all flashbacks and island material. Ending a cliffhanger on the most pivotal moment of Kate's life seemed like a pretty excellent choice to me.

Unfortunately, I read this Season Three preview article a few months back and they mention something Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) was shooting that, when you put two and two together, tell you exactly how Kawyer will be getting out of this little pickle.

And Jack fucking OWNED. Kidney Hostage Situation FTW!!!

"Can you hear me up there?"
"...yeah?"

BEST SHOW ON THUH TEEVEE!!

P.S. On the Offo Lost Podcast, they reveal that AAA had the same kind of contract that Me Rod did, one year only, and they had to convince him to stay as long as he did. So..they planned that truncated mish mash all along? To the Season Two box set!

P.P.S. It was "We're Next" as in "You're Next". Sheeda Theory FTL.

I've just seen #5, is that the end of the "mini-season", or is there one more?

It's like Luis Bunuel back from the dead around here!

Interestingly, on a slightly different note I kept thinking during 5 how much the series was reminiscent of, or drawing on, what were once avant-garde techniques of cinema. Bunuel, and also in particular Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon ~ and also, in fact, 1960s art-thriller TV like The Avengers and The Prisoner (maybe they were explicitly influenced by that sort of avant-garde... I don't know).

There seem to have been a number of dream and trance sequences lately, with the island deceiving, shifting, conjuring ~ and the little harp motifs when a character disappears or changes in a dream sequence really reminded me of those earlier experimental modes. Interesting that such a mainstream, popular show can now draw so heavily on (what would have been) radical, challenging cinema techniques.

This is the first season of a show that I've watched since I moved to the US. Why do y'all have these weird mid-season breaks? I can't fathom it.

Keith, like a scientist
12:28 / 15.11.06
it didn't used to be like this... i think the serial television thing that was fanned by the success of 24 really made the US TV landscape a bit of weird landscape these past 3-4 years. shows used to show for a couple months, with the odd repeat or break once in awhile. then they would take a little break around holidays, but mostly play from September-May in an fairly even way. networks don't have faith in viewers to stick with a storyarc driven show for that many months, especially with any breaks...

Mouse -
Yeah TV has gotten weird over the past couple of years. With this show in particular over the past two seasons viewers started to complain as they would show like three episodes and then show reruns. People wanted it to run more straight through. ABC then decided to take a break now and when they come back in Feb. then the show can run without reruns until the end of the seasons. 24 started this in a way by not starting it's seasons until January so that they just run the season straight through till the end. Since then it's been all crazy with shows like this running straight through.

I would say Lost has been more inspired by Prison Break, which last year ran from late August to late October/early November, then didn't return until March or so. 24 on the other hand goes from January to May, a straight shot through the season. Lost is more of a "season in two parts" deal. Still better than last year, though.

That's so strange. When we get those shows in the UK they just run constantly (unless the BBC decides some obscure darts or snooker tournament is more important). I guess because they're screened after all the episodes have been shot, or something.

Keith, like a scientist
15:02 / 15.11.06
I think Prison Break thing was more because of how the show wasn't renewed until the middle... A lot of network shows are asked for the pilot, and 12 episodes. Depending on how the show does, those 13 get shown or not shown. Some shows never air more than 3 or 4 episodes if they just completely bomb. If the shows does well, the network orders the 'back 13'. I'm pretty sure that's how Prison Break went (which, btw, i've been enjoying quite a bit this season).

buttergun
15:58 / 15.11.06
Keith, not to be a know-it-all, but Prison Break was given the full season pretty early on. It was a big hit for Fox. But I'm sure waiting to film the back half was one of the reasons behind the half-season break. However, they are doing it again this year -- promos are calling this past week's and the next two week's episodes "the last 3 episodes." So I assume once again they're breaking for a few months.

I'm enjoying this season too, though it at times stretches into fantasy. One reason for enjoyment is they are filming here in Dallas. Local sightings of the actors are frequent. Each Monday a local paper has an interview with one of them (haven't gotten to the Scofield/Burroughs brothers yet). The actor playing Kellerman totally lied a few months back, saying in an interview that his character cared for Sarah Tancredi and would try to keep her from harm. I'm pretty sure now he said that to spread disinformation or just as a joke -- as we all know from his character's torturing of Sarah last week.

Back to Lost, though -- a friend tells me he saw an interview with some of the producers the other week, who revealed that they aren't concerned with answering the mysteries of the island; they're more concerned with the characters and their backstories.

That's cute, isn't it? It's good to see they have their priorities straight. This of course gives them free reign to continue making things up off the top of their heads, without any worry about resolution.

. . . while opening the door to spinoffs, in which the unresolved mysteries can be working their charms on other people.
