It seems Sandman is one of the villains for the next movie and quite possibly the Black Cat is the other. I was worried about them having two villains and going the way of the Batman flicks but I also read that they're filming 3 and 4 together so the villains may be split between the two movies.

I’m disappointed that they went with Black Cat though and not Electro since I’ve always seen her as a ripped off Catwoman and I like his big electric star mask (I know it'll never make it into a movie). Also part of me wants Harry to go bad already so Spidey can quickly dispatch him and end his constant whining.

No one's talking about the casting of Topher Grace, the lead guy from THAT 70's SHOW and the recent film IN GOOD COMPANY (where he starred with Scarlett Johannsen and Dennis Quaid; decent fun movie, that) as the other as-yet-unnamed villain in Spidey 3?

Fan speculation is that Hayden Church will be Sandman and Topher Grace will be the Ultimate version of Venom -- sort of like the take on 'what if someone like Peter Parker got powers and used them for evil'?

from comics2film:

Actor Thomas Haden Church dropped some very vague hints about which villain he will play in Entertainment Weekly, according to Superhero Hype. When asked about the character, he said, "He's a horse of many colors ... Let's just say he's an amorphous collection of protons, electrons, and neutrons, of different colors." No, we have no guesses as to what any of that means.

----

I’d guess either Sandman or Venom (the shape-changing hint, the idea that these characters change shape at the atomic level).

Avi Aras just said at a press conference that Spideys 3 and 4 will not shoot back to back as is being rumored, and that Dylan Baker will be back to do the Curt Connors role for Spidey 3. Interesting...

Call me a paranoid conspiracy-theory ferrrk, but I've got a funny feeling that they've drafted in Topher Grace as a standby in case Tobey Maguire haggles over money or his dodgy back or something.

Could be Electro if they decide to make him a living energy-being-type.

Like The Human Torch only made of electricity.

speculation (supposedly from a VERY reliable source) from Development-Hell.com:

>> A source very close to production recently dropped us a line with the following information about who is playing who in the new Spider-Man 3 film!

A source close to the production of Spider-Man 3 confirmed for me that the main villain played by Mr. Thomas Hayden Church will in fact be the Chameleon.

Church plays Dmitri Smerdyakov, who goes by false name Dr. Turner at Peter's college. The Chameleon also has a brother in this film, which will set up Kraven the Hunter for a future sequel I'm told. Let's just say that the Chameleon will use his powers of performance and identify theft to bridge a gap between MJ and Peter Parker in this film.

The producers and Raimi have a big publicity event right before production starts to make this announcement. Look for it after Thanksgiving, with production to start this winter. This will begin the hype for Spider-Man again. They will also start issuing a new animated DVD featuring the Chameleon right before the new movie hits theatres.

Also, Harry does become the Second Green Goblin, but only at the very end. He's kind of like Anakin in Episode III -- growing evil throughout the film, and not donning the full mantle of recognizable villain until the climax.

It's official: the Chameleon is the character Hayden Church will play, I promise.

This comes from a VERY reliable source, so we’re saying you can take this to the bank!

Chameleon? Well... I have faith in Raimi that this character won't be too boring. As long as Chameleon doesn't look like the chap from the 1990s animated series with the blue unitard and bizarro belt.

Oy vey.

I find I'm only fascinated in this character when he is played as Kraven's lackey. It creates an interesting dynamic I find. I can't think of a specific storyline here, but most people get my drift.

Chameleon seems like such a bad choice. Shapeshifting villians have been done to death in sci-fi/superhero films and tv.

I hope this rumor is untrue.

I'm more in favour of Sandman than Venom for the next one. Although I've always thought the big drooling anti-spider was one of the best Spiderman villains.

Perhaps if they set up Spidey to get the Venom suit by the end of this one (the medical "dip" origin in Ultimate Spiderman would work) and then the forth one can be Spiderman vrs his own psychotic suit and Green/Hobgoblin.

I've got this image of Sandman kicking Spiderman's ass in the titanic final battle in some Oscorp research facility. Spidey's on the verge of death, and gets blasted back into a tank of black goop. Then bursts out in his wickedcool black costume and wins the day!

"Brains! Yum!"

Yeah, I always thought the Chameleon was a pretty boring bad guy. I would've taken The Lizard, Sandman, Electro, Kraven, or even Venom over him. I'd love to see The Rino make a cameo though.

He's not a shapeshifter, he's a master of disguise.

I'm not a Chameleon hater. The character's got potential, as saboteur to Peter's personal life and as a Spidey impersonator.

He'll also work well as part of a trifecta with Harry as the Hobgoblin and whichever villain Topher Grace will play (my money is on Eddie Brock).

I've never understood the Sandman fascination. Is it because he's a kind of Spidey Clayface?

Tamayyurt
16:58 / 27.07.05
Sandman... Nah, for me it's cause unlike most of Spiderman's rogues, he's not a mad scientist and doesn't have grand plans. That's also why I like The Rino.

Feh. Raimi needs to drop those Sinister Six zeros and focus on Spidey's real enemies. Like the Walrus and The Che-k'n Kau.

Now we have new spectulation as reported by comics 2 film:

>> Freeze Dried Movies claims to have the scoop on all three villains ol' Web Head will square off against, from various unnamed sources. Ready? You sitting down? Okay -- Topher Grace will allegedly play Venom, Thomas Haden Church will get all in your shoes as the Sandman, and James Franco will get his wings as the Hobgoblin.

from ComingSoon.net...

>> During an interview this weekend promoting Elizabethtown, Kirsten Dunst confirmed rumors to Zap2it that Thomas Haden Church will play Sandman and Topher Grace is Venom in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, opening in theaters on May 4, 2007.

"We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace -- Venom and Sandman," said Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the Spidey films.

"Maybe I wasn't supposed to say that," she added before reversing her claim. "It's the other way around. You're right," she conceded to a journalist.

Dunst has yet to receive a script for the third film that will begin shooting in January. "But I know the general story. There's a lot that they're trying to fit into this one."

So in accordance with the first post on this thread, Sam Raimi, step up for a beating from Barbelith...

Good gravy that sounds awful. On Chud, they discuss the logistics of the CGI involved for both of these characters. It makes me sad. The Chameleon plot that has been rumoured sounds infinitely more interesting, just because of the "twist" ending.

But this makes me think. Sam Raimi is no fool; perhaps he is fucking with us. I want to hope so. I'm thinking that maybe there's going to be a compromise. Thomas Haden Church plays the Sandman, that's cool, and Topher Grace still plays the Chameleon, who isn't revealed to be that villain until the end of the second act.

I pray to Bruce Campbell that the whole Venom thing isn't true. Raimi has said on numerous occasions (which I'm not going to link to 'cause I'm too lazy to research) that Venom does not interest him. Although in the spirit of the above paragraph, he could have been fucking with us....

Newsarama sez 'probably not a psyche out, but it's possible...':

>> According to the report, Dunst checked with her rep, who assured her that the information had already been released. Yes, by Dunst, right then, technically, but to date, there has been no official word from either Sony or Marvel in regards to the villains in the film, though, as stated, rumor and speculation had been focused on the two villains since their respective casting announcements. Of course, as is this is far from an "official" word, and publicity stunts are far from unheard of in Hollywood, there's also the chance that the whole thing could be a worm on a hook put out there to see what nibbles it would get. Although, given that Elizabethtown and Spider-Man 3 a coming from different studios, the using of one press junket to advertise another studio's film casts the "publicity stunt" angle into some doubt.

>> Filming on Spider-Man 3 is slated to begin in January for a May, 2007 release.

the role of GWEN STACY in Spidey 3 has been cast!!

Who knew Gwen was even IN it?? This is the first we've heard.

Bryce Dallas Howard.

Is playing Gwen.

from Newsarama:

>> According to Variety, Mary Jane is getting some competition in Spider-Man 3. Bryce Dallas Howard has been cast as Gwen Stacy. The trade has no further information about the film role, and what part the character of Gwen Stacy may play in the forthcoming movie, although it did note that the fight between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin during which Gwen was killed (in Amazing Spider-Man #121) already appeared in the first movie, with Mary Jane standing in for Gwen.

>> Filming on Spider-Man 3 is slated to begin this month.
