Yes. Don't you have a valid opinion?

Come on Suede-y I'm talking to you. Less of the superiority complex and more of the interaction.

What would you (Suedehead) like to see in Spiderman 3?

To the rescue with actual PSUEDO-NEWS (which may help inspire discussion/speculation) about Spidey 3, courtesy of Comics2Film/superherohype.com!

Now, this is all speculation, since "the people already cast" doesn't take into account new cast members yet to be cast. I think the site is assuming it will be Harry and the guy who played Dr. Curt Connors.

>> Superhero Hype has some possible villain notes for the next web-spinning sequel. First, when caught at the UK premiere of "Spider-Man 2," the following exchange took place between a reporter and director Sam Raimi:
Reporter: "We've heard you've got two villains lined up for the next one. Can you confirm this?" Raimi: "Yes." He would say no more, and the site used deductive reasoning to look at the people already cast to determine that
Tobey Maguire would have a big problem with the color green.

No, I saw that on TV! Or at least a very similar exhange where Raimi actually said "Yes. No. Yes I can confirm I can't tell you anything about that."

News!!!!

Troy, that's the best idea from a "non-professional" that I've heard.

But what I really want to see, and what should've been in the second movie (becaususe it would've made the most sense) are just two things:

1. Spidey getting piled under that rubble/machinery and managing to break out of it, like in ASM #30-something.

2. "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot."

Please, just satisfy my tiny fanboy urgings.

I think you've made the point that you find this thread to a pointless exercise in fanboy speculation.

I think my point is that Venom is the stupidest Spiderman villain ever created (except for Carnage and the other Venom offspring) and he shouldn't even be allowed to buy a ticket to Spiderman 3 much less be the star of the fucking thing. I'd rather see the screen debut of The Toad, Frog Man, and The Spectacular Spider-Kid than Venom.

Why is it that the only humor thats allowed around here is yours? "People are joking around! In a frivolous thread about a comic movie that hasn't even been made yet! They must be stopped...but how!? Yes! Of course! I'll call them "girls"!

After thinking about it I vote to commence with the slash and burn.

Please allow me to go off a bit on Venom. I think the origins surrounding Venom and the character itself is just stupid in terms of using him for a Spider-Man sequel. I think the character is too deeply rooted in continuity and no matter what is done to revise the origins of the character it would still translate badly on screen. Besides I get a sense of a light-hearted tone from the films which seems to be the best part about it. It's campy but not idiotic and I think a character like Venom who is all basically "I WILL CRUSH YOUR SKULL AND EAT YOUR BRAIN BECAUSE YOU RUINED MY CAREER!" would definitely change the tone which I think made the films successful so far. Also... Venom is a shitty creation of a period when a bunch of no-talent hacks with over-stylized art skills roamed the halls of Marvel comics, and the same goes for Carnage. Personally I think there is a lot of characters which would be great translated on film; Mysterio, the Lizard, hell even the Vulture or Kraven would be great with Harry as the new Green Goblin.

MYSTERIO.

cue psychedelic hallucinations - cool visuals - with Peter descending into a very bad trip to come out of it with some of hs guilt issues solved, like DeMatteis did in the comic a long while ago.

oh, and Dwen Stacy for a change.

what a so-so movie this PETER PARKER 2 was. the best about it s the swinging on the web CGI [I could an hour and half of that, no need for expensive actors], JJ Jameson [shit, JK Simmons was the nazi leader of TV series OZ] and the oriental woman singing the cartoon theme on the street. other than that it's a badly written kid's movie with some pre-adolescent couple moments - a clunky romance. some rare good bits in which Sam Raimi 'hits the fuck you button' like we say here. and spares no wacky humour and some cruelty right from his early horror times. but what's the point of spending so much in top notch production if you can't get the story to work?

[please excuse my English. been a while]

Why is it that the only humor thats allowed around here is yours?

For reference purposes, I had no problem with the humour, only with the fact that you and Suedehead were posting between each other sufficiently frequently and enthusiastically to drive anyone who actually wanted to discuss Spider-Man 3 (which strikes me as a pretty pointless exercise but there you go, it's not my call) off the thread. Six contiguous posts, with only Bizunth in between - that's getting on for 20% of a page, just between you two. I would struggle to identify a point where I and a chum have set up such a sustained barrage on any thread not involving the international Jewish conspiracy...

Since this is the only thread in which people are meant to be discussing Spider-Man 3, that's a bit of a problem. Economy says have only one thread, utility that it not be an Abbot and Costello routine.

As for girls - well, studies show school-age girls using communication technologies not to communicate necessary information but to reassert their relationships and cement the pecking orders operating in their social group. As such, it seemed broadly appropriate. Please don't take it as an insult, merely an observation.

As I said, I enjoyed the Sinister Six gag, but sometimes it's good to respect other people's space.

Oh, and calm down, Morque.

FYI, guys: It's Spider-Man, NOT spiderman.

I know it's a bit nit picky, but I really think we should treat this character with, well, with the respect he deserves, y'know? Let's at least get his name right. I'm not looking at anyone in general, but... you know who you are.

He he... hyphen, no hyphen... still no actual involvement in the thread topic apart from your superiority complex. Do you not like direct questions Suedehead?

Venom may not be the best of characters but he is a huge fan favourite (well, was) and could quite easily be retooled sans the continuity nightmare. It'd be a nice change for the visuals too, give S-MIII a light hearted happy Peter but turn Spider-Man a bit darker.

But Raimi's comments do tend to go against the Venom idea anyway so no great loss. Still wondering whether the filming back to back idea is still on the cards though, that'd make the speculation a bit more interesting.

Venom may not be the best of characters but he is a huge fan favourite

It's probably about time that we drag out the question of whether the fans' opinions make an enormous amount of difference - that is, are the styles and approaches of a comic book the best ones for a film, and also do the opinions of the fans really matter? After all, the hardcore Spider-Man fans are probably assumed to be going to see it anyway (people saw Batman and Robin, you know), so bringing in comic book readers is not, I suspect, a key aim.

Besides, wouldn't venom look too much like Spawn?

But who's left? The Vulture? The Chamelion? FROGMAN!?
Venom, Kraven or the Lizard would take the tone a lot darker than the first two films, but that's not necessarily a bad thing now. Some of the most striking Spidey stories have bordered on horror, and Raimi isn't exactly inexperienced in the field...

I remember a guy from the cartoon who was a sort of sci-fi vampire, I want him! People love vampires.

Or if you want to go for the full on dark/horror theme there was another story in the cartoon where Peter Parker started to turn into a real spider well at least a humanoid spider thing, I also want that.

So we have Real Live Spiderman versus a Vampire AND that weird Spiderwoman who looks like a woman who works here.

Rawk'n'Roll

That vampire guy is Morbius and I think he's tied into Blade continuity... so maybe not the best idea.

I would like to see the sinister six, yeah. But totally reformulated, with even lamer villains. A dwarf with an attitude and no super-powers would be the leader. He'd be constantly humiliating the other five guys, and no one would know why he could do that and walk out of it without being mudcaked by a conjoined resentful attack from Hydric Man and Sandman. WHo else... Tombstone, Tombstone could be there, they would totally be pushing him to the side whenever he is on the way, being, you know, rude to him. In the middle of the movie they could get Beyonder (Jack Black) to show up, look at the general state of things, shake his head in disgust and say "no no, let's try one more time"; then he would erase that space-time continuum and the movie would start again, only, you know, *good*...

The entire cast should be played by monkeys, you know, like "Lance Link, Secret Chimp".
Either that, or they should animate it like those old Captain America cartoons, by taking a panel of the comic and making an arm wave or whatever.
Or they should crossover with Aliens V.S. Predator V.S. Terminator V.S. Jurassic Park.
Or they should make it a porno.
Or a musical.
Or a porno-musical.

ok, I’ll pay my debts to society contributing nicely to this theead. I think Hector’s idea is killer: Mysterio. If us adults are going to get any sort of enjoyment out of this series, it’s gotta be in the freakish surrealistic terrain.

from comics2film:

SPIDER-MAN 3

The BBC talked to Sam Raimi, who had this to say about the next web-spinning sequel. "I just finished this morning [Monday 12th July] - I mean the basic story. I'd been working on it with my brother ... It's going to follow the natural progression of the growth of these two individuals, Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker. It will be a love story and it will track the relationship as they encounter new conflicts that separate them. And hopefully their own will and love for each other will bring them back together in the piece. Harry will be a problem, but I'm not certain if Harry will become the Goblin or not. The thing I'm really not certain about is if he comes to feel, 'Now I have the means to destroy Spider-Man -- I was too weak before but now I have a way and I will become the man that my father always dreamed I could be.' Or, does he feel: 'Now I understand why Spider-Man had to destroy him, because he was a mass murderer and now my anger can drain away from me.' It could be an answer to a question and it ends the pursuit, but I'm not certain which way to go."

Venom, sure. Croc, maybe. But Kraven? A mustachioed guy in a big fur vest? For he is THE HUNTER, and when you're on safari a shirt only gets in the way?

Back to a previous question of if the fan's opinions matter and is it best to adapt alot from the comic.

Honestly , in my opinion it's a weird balancing act. You gotta get a bit of both. You have to have enough sense to give the fans a wink and a nod. Let 'em know you respect the characters, y'know. But you also have to have enough common sense to know when to let go of the material and say "this may have worked then but it will not work in this format." You want the fans and the newbies to feel comfortable with your material. Honestly in only 3 comic book movies I have seen that done to a damn near flawless degree:
SuperMan: The Movie
X2
BatMan: Mask of Phantasm

Most movies have come close or are completely off base...The most popular example is probably BatMan and Robin. It winked and nodded too much and they adapted all the wrong elements of the comic book. Schumacher took to the color scheme of the books as opposed to the content. Robin and Bats fighting because of Ivy, Freeze trying to cure his wife, , Ivy being a botanist --- these are all straight from the comic but not enough to really make us fans happy. I like to use Hulk as another poor example. Yeah, we got the Purple pants and "Don't make me angry..." line (which felt forced everytime he said it), but there is a much more subtle and reasonable story to tell about Bruce's father in the comic book. The thing that killed me is that they had opportunity to at least name the kid that Bruce pushes out of the lab "Rick Jones" and they didn't even bother. Little things like that would be appreciated but they go and canabalize or toss away whatever doesn't strike them immediately.

I think X2 and SuperMan works because there is obviously a respect for the subject matter and appreciation for it (I love how Clark can't find a phone booth to change in or how Nightcrawler's religious beliefs are intact). Both Spider-Man films are good in some of these categories but some things are tragically out of place in the first film (Dafoe's Goblin costume is odd-looking, MJ acts more like Lois Lane than Mary Jane) but I think the second is even closer to getting that balance of honoring the original but breathing it's own life into the concept.

Eh, Kraven if they take the "Last Hunt" route, which is really the only way to go with the character.
Heh, I actually remember Calypso before she showed up with the Lizard in tow. The lion suit looks a fuckload better on her...

Doesn't Jameson's astronaut son turn into a werewolf? I throught they were setting things up for him in the sequel.

I, personally, think it's about time for the movie studios to start doing the Marvel thing and having crossovers and Cameos.

Spider-Man 3, continued in X-4 and then in Daredevil 2!

Lord Morgue
13:50 / 22.07.04
Yeah, John Jameson's had several "origins" and superhero turns, but I think the poor bloke is just being used as window dressing, to fill out the cast, like Betty Brant and Curt Connors. Really, most of the people Peter knows in his civilian life turn into super heroes or villains at one time or another. Harry Osbourne, Norman Osbourne,Dr. Octavius, Dr. Connors, John Jameson (twice), even Mary Jane used to hang out with Ms. Marvel and the kid from Omega the Unknown. You ever think superpowers are contagious?
On another note, if the Chameleon wanted to get into Peter's pants so bad, and he can fake Mary Jane, why didn't he just... you know? (cue theme to "The Crying Game")
