Far more likely the government wants to simply lump NT into Heathen.

This isn't coming from the "government" though - the suggestion has come from Thorskegga Thorn of Heathens for Progress. A more lengthy discussion of how this relates to future National Census statistics can be found on Pebble's Census page and at the Pagan Dash blog (see in particular the link to the "Ethnic group, national identity, religion and language consultation" report from the Office of National Statistics).

I don't think this is primarily about issues of self-identification, but about beginning a process of having the ONS recognise pagan diversities - the argument being that this will aid the general recognition & legal status of paganisms in the UK.

In this post, I noted that no pagan organisations have been granted charitable status. This is primarily because the Charities Commission does not recognise "Paganism" as constitutive of a particular faith group(s) - although there are indications that they are (slowly) changing their minds.

Just to put this in context, the 2001 UK Census made no recognition of sexual diversity (and in the USA the category of "unmarried partner" didn't appear in census forms until 1990). It looks like the planned 2011 Census is unlikely to have any questions on sexual identity either - but the ONS' reasoning is that they need to work more carefully on what they are attempting to measure - for more info, see the ONS' documents page.

Does the UK military recognize any flavors of paganism?

I'm pretty sure the US military has allowances for Wiccan soldiers (pentagrams on military tombstones). Not positive.

Lemme see...

Really nice listing in Army chaplain's guide (under "non-traditional faiths").

and ah, milpagan.org links to articles on pentagrams being allowed on soldiers' graves. It's recent, but yes, US military recognizes Wicca as a valid faith.

In America, it also doesn't take much to be recognized as a church - I don't think you even have to incorporate as a non-profit, although that helps. Rules vary from state to state. Tax breaks come from the mere fact of being a church, not from doing any charitable work (or so the ULC has led me to believe).

As far as I'm aware, it doesn't (but then, as I've noted above not many institutions do). I have met pagans, magicians etc., who are in military or quasi-military occupations, and whilst there are probably informal support networks, I don't know as to whether or not there are any Pebble-like initiatives on the go.

Oh, I'm sorry, I misunderstood.

I feel as if I, on some level, have made a mistake.

Normally, it wouldn't matter; you can be a harmless Satanist, after all. Worshipping the so-called 'Devil' is a decent night out for couples of a certain age, and I for one wouldn't want to stand in the way of that.

It's just that, having performed various operations last night (and I couldn't believe they worked either - it was just a laugh, you know, post pub, post curry house?) I seem to have sold my soul to the Great Beast.

My concern, now, is how I can possibly get myself out of this situation. The sale of one's soul is one thing, I guess, but I'm not sure if I can really remember what I exchanged it for?!

I don't seem to be any happier, in any case.

Please, no posts about why the negotiations above were inappropriate - I know they were.

Positive advicw only, ta.

Has anybody on the forum done any work with the Black Madonna figures in relation to any of the associated traditions with those figures, Christian, Gnostic, ATR's, Romany, Saints, The 3 Mary's or anything else i have yet to encounter.

Any experiences with the Black Madonna figures?

My mother's a Catholic who spent several years living in Czechoslovakia, so I always knew Black Madonnas were out there... but I'm not sure what specific "work" would look like in a Catholic context other than, y'know, praying specifically to that Madonna. Which I haven't done. Theologically, they're all interchangeable, although locally, they've all got different flavors.

Now, Guadalupe - she's a different story. But not precisely a Black Madonna at all.

I am going to start a weekly or daily devotion to saint Sarah, not an official saint, a Romany saint, i am collecting information on her at the moment, she may have some qualities of the black Madonna's but her story is very much a different one. She is sometimes called Sara la Kali, Sara the black, and there are various theories relating her to Kali and even Ishtar, but the story seems to be one more based in a Christian tradition, thou the Romany rites surrounding her arguably are not, Also one author tries to draw links to Sarah wife of Abraham, this same author flies in the face of the genetic evidence claiming the Roma are from India and sees the Roma as Jewish in origin whom spent along time in India.

At the moment i am trying to see what fits and works, as the Romany culture has passed through many different cultures and there cultural practices reflect that collection of spiritual influences, yet there seems to be a root culture to the various clans, but then there are differences between them as well.

Its of interest to me as i am of Romany heritage, with a strong Christian tradition in another part of my family, that seems to be making a resurgence at present. There are now alot more Romany sites online a great deal more well researched literature, and a greater presence of Romany culture in popular media.

Saint Sarah wikipedia article

I have alot more links and personal accounts some conflicting in opinion, and more on Romany general religious/spiritual beliefs, yet to go through the links with a critical eye to start building a devotional practice.

Trying to confirm a link to the Saint Sarah of the Eastern orthodox church, where the storys of her being an Egyptian women could have root, but they also have reference to Medieval saint mythologies as well.

I watched it quite a while ago when a local theatre did art house film shows for a while, its a very moving piece of film that provoked alot of sadness in me, but also alot of anger at the sheer inhumanity that Rom in certain areas of the world have had to suffer and still are in eastern Europe in particular.

What struck me most from memory is the music, i have the sound track, the journey the Romany people took is captured in all the various styles of music and dance.

this question has certainly popped up before but:

how does one go about procuring higher psychedelics like DMT and it's legal cousin, 5-MeO-DMT?

also, how does one judge the quality or specific type of Psilocybin?

thnaks!

I don't know where you live, exultant, but I think there's a pretty good likelihood that there is some sort of "analogs" law that renders 5-meo not actually "legal", especially if you intend to consume it. just mentioning this because discretion is probably wise in these pursuits.

anyway, check out erowid.org for info about extracting dmt from plant materials that are pretty easily obtained via the wonders of the internet. also, have a sitter. doing dmt by yourself is opening yourself up to all sort of potential disaster.

In the Otherkin thread I made the following post:

In contrast, I have known people who work with animal spirits, and have found them to often be enhanced by their work. The animal spirits seem to enrich them and actually extend their capacities. Some of these persons have even become physically like their totems in an almost uncanny way. What I see going on with the dragons seems to be a very different phenomenon. It's almost as if their alter image is their own worst enemy, obessively drawing their attention from their own lives.

Hi, guys.I've been lurking in this thread for a while, keeping to myself since I don't have any real contributions to make. However, that paragraph made me curious,as a layman in the subject, about one thing: are there (or could there be) a Dragon animal spirit, or is every animal spirit connected to a "real" species of animal? Additionaly, does it have to be an animal species that exist in the present, or can it be from a long extinct animal species? (because I do remember Carlos CastaƱeda mentioning a sabertooth animal guide in one of his books, but I understand he's not considered the most reliable of sources)

to which TTS responded as follows:

This is would be better in the Stupid Q's thread, wouldn't it. Lots of people will have lots of different answers depending on how their particular trad handles the concepts involved. First define "spirit." Then demonstrate that "spirits" exist.
Then define the difference between real and imaginary as it relates to the work at hand.

So, I'd do my best to define such terms. Keep in mind I'm not a magician in any way, just someone who's curious about the subject,so all my knowledge is purely theoretical, and my understanding of the realities of magick practice is fairly limited

As "spirit" I mean a disembodied entity that exists on its own and, has its own personality and will, and that communicates with living/flesh beings for whatever reasons. The definition found on Wikipedia for Spirit Guide and/or Totem seem to cover fairly well the meaning I'm trying to convey.

As I said, I cannot demonstrate from my own experience that spirts exist, however I do believe they exist, mostly from third-party accounts. In that point I have to trust other people.

As, as for "real" animal species, I meant animal species that exist, or have existed, in the material world, that eat, grow, reproduce, and die, and may even leave behind a fossil record, i.e., an animal species as science would define it (in that logic, a sabertooth would be "real", and a dragon, "imaginary". If dragons do or did exist, and science has only not find hard proof of it, than they would be considered "real", as well, and the first part of my question would be rendered moot, unless it is changed to "can a spiritual animal guide/spirit/totem come in the shape of an animal that does not, nor ever did, exist in the material world?)

I hope this is precise enough to prompt an objective answer. If it's not, I can't really elaborate any further and again my question will be meaningless, in which case I apologise for taking all of you time needlessly.

In time, I did do some research on dragon guides/spirits/totems on the internet, and was able to find a few sites on the subject, but they don't seem trustworthy, namely:

Dragon Totem

Animal Totem: Dragon

Any insights will be appreciated. Statements of absence of possible insights on such subject, if that's the case, will be equally appreciated.

One last detail: in the case of "real" animals, the animal spirit in question may have been an animal of that specied in one of its past incarnations, or simply present itself in that shape with the qualities commonly associated to that animal species. Both would be included in what I'm referring to as "animal guide/spirit/totem"

Thanks for the help, or simply for having the patience to read this post this far.

It's a good question - what is the nature of 'animal spirits'? Might even deserve its own thread. I like Barry Patterson's writing about this in Chapter 10, 'the animal powers' of his book 'The art of conversation with the genius loci'. He writes about lots of different kinds of interpretation for animal encounters - I don't have much inclination towards a narrower view of the 'real meaning'.

But then my interpretation of 'spirit' is pretty far from yours - David Abram's writing had a huge role in shaping the way I understand the word. If the article I linked to is a bit TL;DR, skip down to the section on the balian's rice offerings and Abram's encounter with the bison.

I know a handfull of people who have relationships with dragons one way or another that I believe them, and probably several more whose relationships with dragons I have no particular reason to believe or disbelieve.

Off the top of my head, none of them claim "totem", but that's a word we're often careful with, because it has layers of connotations that are sometimes conflicting. Thus, the word sometimes obscures more than it clarifies.

So, in the context of my experience with those people, Dragons do seem to fall under the "Animal Allies" category, in terms of how I see people interacting with them, and how I see people interacting with various Animal Spirits.

But I think the most interesting conversation I had was with a fellow who was intensely dismayed to have caught the attention of what he was perceiving as a dragon, because he didn't want a mythical beastie for a spirit companion. He had always found that a bit dubious, you see, and didn't want people to stop taking his work seriously.

We ended up in a conversation about what Dragons may represent, and concluded that - at least in his case - Dragons represent natural flows of force. Things like magma flows, jet streams, ocean currents, major rivers, etc.

If I understand correctly, this is indeed the sort of thing Dragons can represent in Asian mythology, so that makes sense.

Do spirits exist?

Do animal spirits exist?

Could a spirit exist for an animal that is now extinct?

Could a spirit exist for a mythical animal such as a dragon?

Personally, I think these questions are impossible to answer because, although you might get some first-, second-, or third-hand anecdotal evidence, they can't be proven or disproven in any meaningful way.

Here are some questions that I think are answerable, and that I think address some of the same issues:

Do some people believe that spirits/animal spirits/spirits of extinct or mythical animals exist? What in particular do they believe?

How could such beliefs be helpful, harmful, or useful?

Do some people act as if spirits/animal spirits/spirits of extinct or mythical animals exist? How in particular do they act?

How could such actions be helpful, harmful, or useful?

How COULD these beliefs and actions fit into a magical practice?

How, if at all, DO these beliefs and actions fit into a magical practice?

my encounter with the ants was the first of many experiences suggesting to me that the "spirits" of an indigenous culture are primarily those modes of intelligence or awareness that do not possess a human form.

Perhaps oddly, I don't feel that this contradicts the other definition. I'm not sure I can articulate why not, though...

I wrote this over in the otherkin thread - For example this weekend i had a vision in which a women clothed in silver turned up inside of me started barking orders at various unwelcome parties inside of me, drew a sword and scared the crap out of my 'enemies'. Then she gave me her name, which i later discovered is greek and means protector/defender. This was a real experience, my head and body had felt like shit up until that point, she cleared me out entirely at the time, also relaying advice for me after.

I later tryed to find correspondence and came across the queen of swords, thoth deck, suddenly the commentary on the card clicked it all into place especially the symbolism of the childs face and the old mans severed head. It fit more readily into a structured personal magical narrative.

To take a more critical eye to it i would like to expand, I had just picked up with the thoth tarot deck again, in all probability why that context occured to me, I have been playing in an rpg where a female sword wielding angel plays a large role, and i have been reading alot of texts about enochian magic and researching angels in general. I know i have a very vivid imagination and am able to disassociate which creates a form of trance. The medication i have been on is giving me very vivid often meaningful dreams of late, and i am prone to hearing voices and having visions and have a stored memorable narrative for such experiences.

The experience could easily have been created by a complex web of relationships that came together at a stressful point thus causing me to disassociate go into a trance and have an empowering vision.

But similarly i am open to the option that a presence entered me and protected me. and left me with further instruction in dealing with my 'enemies'. Thou this could potentially cause a problem if i were to cling to this idea of a guardian angel, so i came to be reliant on these experiences, which is why i let them go as soon as possible these days as past experience has taught me that if i obsess over them too much they become problematic.

Thou i tryed to apply verification to this figure through more traditional sources from the greek name given and the appearance nothing was conclusive. The tarot card explanation fit very well into the context, but then my unconscious may well have created such an effect because it may be using a similar structure to dreams to communicate with me over aspects of myself i am not paying enough attention too. I am familiar enough with the thoth deck and the cosmology of it to have some unconscious relationship to it.

I think as is being suggested it is very important to gather as many models of spiritual contact as possible and accept all of them as bearing some light on the experience you may have had or wish to have. Self suggestion and unconscious narrative can be powerful factors in how these experiences manifest, as can be the social rules and reactions that the community structure reinforces about these experiences.

Extracting DMT = much harder than you think and also not ideal for your very first experience as you can't be exact with dose. Much better if possible to get a measured dose and have someone with you who is experienced - in absolute agreement about the sitter.

If you're at a place where you're interested in DMT and you're posting about it in the Temple, you should/could probably find yourself a group of people fairy locally to you who are also thinking about such things. I have no idea where you are but if you're lucky enough to be anywhere nearby if I were you I might hang out with the sorts of people who attend events such as these:

The World Psychedelic Forum.

Entheogenesis.

Or join a mailing list. There is a really good one in the UK full of fascinating people who know other fascinating people but I'm unwilling to post about it here.

DMT's not the sort of thing you just hang out on street corners for with your dollar, I really believe that such awesome things come naturally to you as your interest progresses. You kind of manifest it for yourself. If you should have it, it will come to you.

I had the strangest experience a couple of nights ago. I awoke from my sleep at about 4am because of an unusual disturbance. I could smell the most beautiful, flowery scent. I thought perhaps the incense was still burning from my night practice, or my landlady was causing it, but I couldn't find a reason for it. I had walked around the apartment and the scent seemed to contain itself in my bedroom, at first. Then, I could smell it again in the living room.

I guess I looked strange sniffing about my apartment in the wee hours of the morning, but I found it unsettling that I couldn't find a reasonable source. I am wondering if it is possible to have olfactory "hallucinations" and if there is anything else I should be aware of regarding this sort of scented phenomenon?

According to the Mayo Clinic, a reputable source, olfactory hallucinations sometimes are associated with epilepsy or migranes.

Or it might not have been a hallucination -- there could have been flowers, incense, or strong perfume in a neighboring apartment, room, or floor.

Or, since you just woke up, it could have been a bit of leftover dream.

Or it could have been a one-time, quasi-mystical experience.

Or it could have been something else altogether.

If it doesn't recur I wouldn't worry.

The scent of roses is a classic hallmark of Marian visions.

There was no sign of the Blessed Virgin. Also, the scent was more of a jasmine with a bit of a woody scent. Maybe even sandalwood.

I imagine similar things show up in other traditions, but the visions of the Blessed Virgin are the only ones I really know about.

Possibly Ghandarvas?

To my knowledge I do not have epilepsy or migranes - sometimes migranes, but I wasn't having one that I could tell at that time. I was quite peaceful.

Or it might not have been a hallucination -- there could have been flowers, incense, or strong perfume in a neighboring apartment, room, or floor.

There is only one other person living in the building - my landlady. She is more likely to have a cigarette than burn some incense or spray perfume at four in the morning. It's the smell I usually wake up to, in fact. A bit irritating since I have quit. I thought of it though, that maybe she was up to something, but she hadn't a clue as to what I was talking about.

Or, since you just woke up, it could have been a bit of leftover dream.

Hmm, possible.

Or it could have been a one-time, quasi-mystical experience.

The universe has been rather fabulous lately.

Or it could have been something else altogether.

The ghost of 4711?

If it doesn't recur I wouldn't worry.

Yeah, I am not really worried as it was so innocuous, or so it seemed. I am more curious. It was such a lovely scent.

I woke up from a dream this morning explaining the tree of life to a bunch of children, i was 5 or 6 in the dream, i had drawn out the tree with a pack of crayons on a piece of scrap paper and was describing the relationships of the spheres.

I was especially focused on Geburah (mars) and made a point of putting an arrow on the sephirah.

When i awoke a pack of demons were in my head dealing with my 'enemies' literally tearing them into small shreds as i remained in bed with my eyes closed, Now i have been looking into demonaltry of late, as i have started to see how it is confirmation of god, through reaction too god.

But from the same token i am aware that i have seen Samael refered too as the angel that presides over Geburah.

Another part of the dream from some reading i have been doing was that at the centre where tiphareth should be was saturn (binah) and also venus (netzach) was opposite Geburah.

The demons were defending the child in me in my waking vision/dream, so i can see how the dream is follwed into waking consciousness.

The idea of Saturn at the centre comes from a theory of saturn being the night sun, or the centre of the night sky and refers to the cosmology of sumerian and other cultures.

I am left wondering what the integral relationship is between the so called day side and night side of the tree is ( funnily enough i have just watched two russian fantasy movies of late as well day watch and night watch which deal with those classic themes of dark and light and how they blur in reality, fascinating characterisation can't recommend them enough.)

Funny how the unconscious dreaming mind works, but it leads me too conclude that my unconscious deals with angels and demons with a similar character, thou they may appear vastly different in appearance, voice, movement and demeanour in my visions/dreams they appear to only want to protect the child within me from its enemys. As if both the shadow and the anima are united in protecting me.

I have been calling on lilith and nahema of late as well, as well as azazel and lucifer. I am finding how my mind interrelates to these mythic structures more and more fascinating, i used to put this stuff into short films at college, and thanks to james pd have just been introduced to the idea of transcendental cinema, something we never covered at college or my brief spell at uni. Anyway dreams, myths, magic, film and music converging to give me revealing dreams and visions.

Maybe the mind unfolds like a flower as we sleep and gives us the beautiful scent of personality as we wake.

I think the trauma from my childhood has my mind locked into a childhood state where by i still have a very clear imagination like a child, i can literally immerse myself into a world where card board boxes are a steam train as i did when i was a child.

The challenge now is not to use that as a crutch or coping mechanism and learn to employ the talents it has given me to forge ahead. Making the internal convergence an external one, giving it release.

If you're asking what I think you're asking, then yes, according to Jung, the same structures we find in the personal unconscious seem to pervade whole cultures (or all humanity), thus the term "collective unconscious."
