Sinestro was certainly Hal Jordan's archest of arch foes -except for maybe Hal's boss/girlfriend who occasionally went Space-Amazon (and insane). Sinny used to be a GL, himself, but he went bad, so he's kinda pre-Parallax (er, pre-Parallax-infected Parallax-who-is-Hal-with-a-new-costume) Parallax. The fearless, totally honest hero who fucks up, anyway, and crashes.
He's often (thought) dead and an all-around angry killer space-psycho.
His best friend is G'Nort, 'cause G'Nort proves something's wrong with the whole GLCorps set-up. Not really, but you have to admit, it makes sense.
Oh, and his ring is yellow, it has been stolen from him before, but he seems good at getting it back. He may currently be dead, but if not, surely he'll pop up in the Resurrection-of-Hal mini going on right now.

But where does his yellow ring come from? Was it once his GL ring? How does he recharge it? What is poo?

Mario
15:51 / 21.04.05
The ring came from the Qwardians (think evil arms-dealers from the anti-matter universe). He recharges it by exposure to Green Lantern energy (sort of, see below).

He's alive (again), and presently it seems his ring is powered by a cosmic fear entity who was imprisoned in the Central Battery, and was the cause of the whole "weakness to yellow" bit, which is why he could recharge it by tapping into the energy of a power ring.

The name of this entity, and the reason for Sinestro's resurrection, are all explained in GL: Rebirth. I'll say no more, unless you don't mind spoilers.

Having read the JLA issues where they go back in time to ancient Atlantis and get killed and resurrected at least eight times, I'm confused about two things - Why is Superman apparently wearing his Kingdom Come costume with the black background to the "S", and why can Wonder Woman apparently fly?

I'm Rick Jones, bitch
13:11 / 15.05.05
How recent is that? Supes wore a black S for a while, to honor the dead of OWAW.

Wonder Woman flies all the time these days. Maybe since she was reincarnated as a goddess or something in '97-98?

Billuccho!
15:32 / 15.05.05
I think Wonder Woman may have been flying since she was rebooted Post-Crisis, at least, though there was a time where some kind of ear injury/infection made her have to stop flying for a while.

Mario
15:46 / 15.05.05
Wonder Woman has had the ability to "glide on air currents" for quite some time (the 1950's, I believe). George Perez made it full-fledged flight.

Wasn't there something about Wonder Woman gaining flight by acquiring the winged slippers of Hermes, or am I mixing that up with other googy neo-mythological superhero comic?

Mario
20:52 / 16.05.05
She needed them to leave Themiscyra or something like that. Her flight abilities are separate.

Jack Denfeld
09:02 / 17.05.05
why can Wonder Woman apparently fly?
She uses her jet plane. But since it's invisible, it looks like she has flying powers.

Aertho
10:43 / 17.05.05
it looks like she has flying powers.

No. She flies. She's flown all over the place since the mid-80s. She got the invisible plane a while back from aliens, but hardly uses it consistently.

the invisible plane is back? brilliant, one of the best things about WW. tho she did seem to be able to fly pretty good on her own in grants run of the JLA i always liked the plane more, in fact i think why i prefer the DCU to the MU these days is that it just has so much crazy baggage that even Crisis can't gloss over and they just suck it all up and cope with it, the MU and now the U-MU are just too rational for my liking.

This Sunday
15:48 / 17.05.05
The invisible plane showed up (probably more times than we saw it) in Morrison's JLA run. I can recall one instance getting some fanboys bent out of shape, because Steel wanted to look it over. It shape-changes, though, doesn't it? I mean, not just shrinking for storage, but wasn't that chariot-o-glass actually the invisible plane?

FinderWolf
18:21 / 17.05.05
John Byrne re-introduced the invisible plane in his run -- and as someone here said, aliens gave it to Diana (aliens with the crazy name of Lampsarians or something like that). She only uses it once in a while these days.

FinderWolf
18:23 / 17.05.05
and yes, the aliens gave her a disc which shapechanges into any form, so she can make it become all kinds of vehicles. I think it actually became the WonderDome now, Diana's sort of Fortress of Solitude.

In Greg Rucka's run, when the gods messed up Paradise Island in a fit of rage (it was Hera's jealous rage over Zeus' indiscretions), the alien disc (which was actually sort of alive) sacrificed itself to form a shield to keep the mainland US from being destroyed by the resulting tidal wave. So I'm not sure if this means the invisible plane alien thingie is really dead and gone now in current WW continuity....it would seem it's "dead and gone" for now, as much as something can be in comics.

Aertho
19:06 / 17.05.05
Alien "disc" is interesting term. Early in Diana's career, she was driven by another alien "disc" : Harmonia's Talisman. Is there some precedent? Seems weird, that's all.

Yeah, "Dome" was a sentient mechanism that could do ANYTHING. Lame. While alien tech explained the invisiblity and telepathic controls, shapechanging sentient sidekick-like "weaponry" was over the top.

Mr Tricks
20:08 / 17.05.05
As I recall, towards the end of Jeminez's run the Dome was used to rebuild (a post Worlds at war) THEMASCAIRA. Then Hera had her fit which distroyed most of the Domes abilities Except its ability to become an invisible plane, hence she has an Invisible plane that can morph into a disc she keeps in her belt/girdle but it's no longer smart or able to assume a variety of forms.

Ah, the invisible plane. Soooo many jokes.

Where'd you park it? How do you read the altimiter? How goofy does a person flying in a seated position look? What's the point of an invisible plane when YOU'RE not invisible yourself?

What's the golden age deal with that plane? What was its original introduction?

There's a great overview of WW's powers from a non-comic-reader's perspective at How Stuff Works (of all things).

Says the plane was an incarnation of Pegasus in one version of the stories. Cool!

What's up with Anarky, these days? And does anyone expect DC to bring him back and mold him a bit closer to that look-alike written by that guy whose biggest gig was writing some Green Lantern stories and whose two Superman comics managed to end both series?
Also, have Anarky and Oracle ever met on-panel?

Anarky's going to be in next week's (June 8) issue of GREEN ARROW:

I'm guessing V FOR VENDETTA.

Yeah, V. And if I'm alone in seeing the similarities I may take a break from the world and go absolutely mad for ten to twenty seconds.

Already noted in the "V for Vendetta" thread in Films, TV and Theatre. Moore's creation is, of course, an inferior copy.

man, THAT was an obscure moore reference...

Okay, 'nother wonder woman question. What's up with the 'Fury' who turns up in Phil Jiminez's civil war on Themyscira storyline? What relationship does she have with Lyta Hall, the Infinity Inc. Fury (daughter of earth-2 wonder woman, yeah?) and Hector Hall (is he still Dr. Fate?)?

The glorious Mr. Tricks answers your question in loving detail on page 5 of this very thread.

Thank's for the kind words gridley, for greater ease . . . here's a link.

Okay, so this Helena K Fury is Lyta Hall's mother, right? So what - she's immortal or something? She's looking kinda teenage/twentysomething there in this appearance in the Jiminez book (though of course all the JSA people are guilty of this) - she hangs out on paradise island these days?

So Wonder Woman can fly. Good for her. What I want to know is could the Flash ever fly in the comics? Because in the Superfriends TV show, he can.

SiliconDream
04:28 / 03.06.05
Nope, although he occasionally leaps fast enough for gravity not to much matter. In fact, to my knowledge nobody's managed to use the Speed Force to fly (Jesse Quick can fly IIRC, but it's a separate superpower)/

How did the Enchantress come back to life?

Last I saw her she had her throat slit in Hell by Faust to re-start the infernal fires (during "Day of Judgement").

Mario
18:00 / 03.06.05
I think that was cleared up in the fairly obscure JLA:Black Baptism mini.
