New Entertainment Weekly features Bats on the cover, plus articles on same:

of particular interest is this tidbit from an article from ICv2:

>> What Fierman doesn't discuss is the way in which Nolan has actually filmed Batman Begins -- on locations around the world and with a minimum of computer-generated effects. Cinephiles should pray for the success of Batman Begins if only to forestall Hollywood's headlong rush towards cheaper electronically generated methods of production (Sin City and Sky Captain are fine, but all films shouldn't necessarily look like that). If Batman Begins fails, the expensive old school adventure film could become as dead in Hollywood as hand-drawn 2D animation -- and that would be a tragedy of sorts. So there is a lot riding on Batman Begins and Warner Bros. and DC Comics won't be the only losers if Batman Begins stumbles -- but with the marketing muscle of Time Warner and the impressive array of talent (both in front of and behind the camera) that appears to be an unlikely possibility, though, judging from the coverage in EW, Time Warner is taking no chances.

So WB has released a big ol' chunky trailer.

Looks soooo good. My gushability with this movie cannot be stopped. I've already ordered the movie poster.

FINALLY a trailer that makes the film look like it may be cool. Everything that's come before has made me largely indifferent, but this one actually got me interested.

Love the aerial shot of Gotham - It looks like New York City grown out of control (I hope it's not actually an undoctored shot of NYC or I'll look foolish).

I haven't read much Batman - just Year One and Miller's Dark Knight books - so could somebody tell me where the fire-breathing horse in the trailer comes in...?

That looks fantastic. The music also works really well. Just a shame that Gary Oldman didn't feature.

Unreasonably excited about this film.

After watching that trailer I bet poor Alfred does nothing but follow Bruce around with a cage full of bats just incase Batman needs to make a dramatic enterance. Then its "Quickly Alfred, Release the dramatic bats!"

Actually... in, uh, a sort of unrelated note... I was reading about the new Batman game, and in that you get to use something called an HF Transponder (ooo!) to use sonar to attract bats to you, to make a dramatic entrance and scare those naaarsty crims. I got all excited at this thought, of being Batman, and trying to set up dramatic confrontations to scare the shit out of people. I bet it's a rubbish game, though. Sorry to babble.

That trailer is exciting me quite a lot.

Although don't get me wrong, I fully hope to see Alfred running around with a cage of bats in the film. In fact I'll be dissapointed if this doesn't happen.

Guys, pull yourselves together.

What would Guy Debord/Jesus/Karl Marx think about this thread ?

They'd be so ashamed.

I really hate to say it, but they'd think you were a bunch of 'tennis professionals' - It is simply not germane for intelligent, civilised and decent individuals to waste the time it'd take to light a cig with the original cell version of this material, and then not laugh like broken toilets while they were doing it, surely innit, blokes ?

Everytime these issues are raised, whoever does it is killing the world

here I go then, killing the world by that line of thinking.

This is straight out of Batman: Year One by Miller & Mazzuchelli, by the way. Although they didn't give it the neato-keen name.

I was hoping it would be, I just hadn't read that book. So I'm guessing we'll see that in the film, an all. Which makes me unreasonably excited.

So, is the flame-breathy horse derived from something in the comics, then? The slogan 'Fiery! Equine!! Action!!!' comes to mind, but I don't remember this from any comic. Which is a shame; there should be a plethora of fire-breathing horses in comics. Like, Schwartz and his apes.

15:38 / 29.04.05
I have never heard of a flame-breathing horse in any Batman comics, ever.

I haven't yet seen the trailer cause I don't have the programs loaded, BUT I would venture to guess that given that Jonathan Crane aka The Scarecrow is in this movie, the shot may be from a fear-induced hallucination.

Maybe Katie Holmes' character of Bruce Wayne himself has a fire-breathing horse phobia. (insert your own 'Katie Holmes is now dating Tom Cruise' joke here)

DC's Silver Age was full of flaming horses. Everyone had them at one point. Flying ones, invisible ones, green ones... you name it.

There was a big ceramic stable for them right behind the Hall of Justice.

Actually, I believe if you check your back issues, you will discover that the stable was actually asbestos.

I love the fact that parents are warned that it may contain "some thematic elements". Those themes, eh? Scary.

Premiere magazine's new issue has a big article on this that is yet another thing that has me very much looking forward to this film.

The Batman preview didn't show til the absolute end of the
1 1/2 hour Smallville season finale (about 15 min. before the episode ended). But it was 10 minutes of footage - maybe this was like the international trailer? Dunno...but it was pretty decent.

I occasionally I felt like Christian Bale was doing things in his acting that were slightly melodramatic or the dialogue was maybe not so hot -- kind of violated the 'show, don't tell' rule of dialogue subtlety.

The scene where Bats saves Katie Holmes was interesting -- his voice and delivery as Bats seemed slightly pushed (as compared to the animated series Bats' voice, Kevin Conroy, which I hold as the gold standard), but overall ok. It looks solid, and Michael Caine makes a great Alfred.

I really like the line that Liam Neeson/whatever his character's name is, Henri Ducard or something, says about whose fault Bruce's parents death was.

What I really want to see is an early scene between Oldman/Gordon and Bats, where Goldman is first taking in the concept of this guy in a suit running around.

Minor film clip here. It's basically Ducard and Wayne so don't click if you're trying to keep away from spoilers.

I especially like the last line.

I know it's not very gentlemanly of me to notice, but does anyone else think Katie Holmes' breasts seem to have been digitally-enlarged in the poster for this movie?

15:17 / 25.05.05
Funny you should mention that, I just watched The Gift for the first time and Holmes' attributes, revealed openly in said film, seem to match the proportions of the Batman promo stuff I've seen. It's not like Katie is made out to be Pamela Anderson or Dolly Parton in said poster.

Although Holmes seems like she'll always look about 16 years old, which is disturbing to me. I think her casting in Batman Begins is kind of odd but oh well.

Congratulations, gridley and FinderWolf. With your discussion of the size of Katie Holmes' breasts in the poster for Batman Begins, you have taken this thread to a level lower than any previously achieved on Barbelith. What's particular impressive is that you have done this in the sub-category 'Threads About Movies Based On Comic Books That Have Not Yet Been Released (Or In Some Cases, Made)', which has traditionally been the genre in which some of the most jaw-droppingly inanity in the history of the board has been dribbled out. Yet you two have surpassed all this, and gone lower still! Well done. Well done.

on another topic, it seems like Gary Oldman is going even further than just using Pacino's SERPICO (the one good cop amidst a ton of corrupt cops) as inspiration, as he's said in interviews -- his 2 or so lines as Gordon in the preview seem like he's using a voice almost similar to Pacino's as Serpico. Either that or it sounded like he's doing a pseudo-Chicago accent.

Can we talk about the pertness of Christian Bale’s arse, instead? Surely that’s completely relevant and on-topic, because it’ll tell us something about the way he’ll be portraying the Batman in the upcoming fillum which we’re all soooo looking forward to. Will he go with the classic lines of the Neal Adams-type arse, as befitting a detective/athlete kinda guy, or will he be sporting the more sizeable, nay, imposing Dark Knight Returns arse?

What? Christian Bale can and does change the shape of his arse to suit the character he’s playing, you know.
