Eeeh, don't worry, those are pretty much the main pics. You're not missing anything if you don't see the third one...it's very much the same as the others.

Is it me or does that look a little dorky? I think it's the neck, the ears....and the bulk of the suit..? or am I being too nit-picky fanboy?

Nah, I agree, I don't think you're being nitpicky. It looks pretty lousy.

So far, it is far from exciting. I was hoping for a new look and instead this suit looks very much like the same rubber suit instead.

But I'm prepared to give it a chance.

I was really hoping that they would ditch the rubber armour (have you SEEN Christian Bale's body? The last thing that guy needs is scuplted padding) and go with a fabric outfit, something that resembled Mazzuchelli's drawings from the Year One comic. The Spider-Man costume for the film looks great, and it's a thin skin-tight material, and the costume that was used in that Batman vs. Aliens vs. Predator fan-film that was doing the rounds a year ago looked pretty good too.

I don't like the cowl on this costume, I don't like the cape that attaches via the triangular clips on the clavicle, I don't like the gauntlets....bleh. Disappointing.

At least the cast, director, and writer are still all pretty great - this may yet turn out ok...

The New York Licensing Show debuted the new Batmobile and damn if it doesn't look even cooler when well-lit.

More thumbnails of it here and here.

Minor Brit-art star and bold adventurer in the strange realms of conceptual installation, Cornelia Parker’s 1991 piece 'Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View’. Popular with the tabs at the time.

Perhaps this could be a clue as to how this exciting new Batmobile will be powered? Some kind of collapsed anti-matter/gravity drive? Steered by the unbound imagination of a super-hero?

Or maybe not. Perhaps it’s just a messy looking car with some bits bolted on. Great. I hope the story is tremendously exciting, is all.

I really like that image, but I don't like the new Batmobile. It's an awkward reminder of Bat-Man and Robin's merchandise-driven production design and seems at odds with the script's reported 'realistic' approach. The film needs to choose between the James Bond-like Bat-Man that relies on gadgetry and the Shadow-like Bat-Man that doesn't.

Having read the script (albeit regretably. So damn good) I can definitely tell you this Batmobile serves the more utilitarian-approach of the film.

Click here for the wee-bit spoilery context of it.

Thanks for the explanation, Mass, but it still hasn't convinced me. I'd read a synopsis of the script after Christian Bale had been announced as Bat-Man, but recently read an interview with one of the film crew who advised disregarding previous information. Ken Watanabe cast as Ra's al Ghul, if correctly reported, is a disappointment.

Why? The guy's a phenomenal actor, and leftfield casting for the main villain is just what this movie needs...

The Strobe

I see the whole anti-gadgetry angle, but Wayne Industries, in this script, is portrayed as seriously hi-tech. Wayne appropriates the technology the company he's inherited for his own purposes. I'd rather they'd designed a fast-moving, butt ugly tank thing, than some sleek, finned, sports car. It fits in more with the company's angle.

Jack, I enjoyed Watanabe's performance in The Last Samurai, but he's not Ra's al Ghul. It reminds me of The Shadow, with John Lone as Shiwan Khan, not Bat-Man, and if what I've read is accurate, to have Ra's as the head of a clan of ninja is uninspired.

Newsweek has an excellent article on the behind-the-scenes nature of the film and two new photos to go along with it.

The new chapter, which will hit theaters in June 2005, is called "Batman Begins"—presumably because "Batman Sucked the Last Time So We're Starting Over" was too clunky.

Exclusive from Cinescape.com:

>> As filming continues on Chris Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS, one of our most reliable and trusted sources contacted us to say that Batman's movie studio is working on getting a teaser trailer out as soon as possible for the film. The source, who works in the industry, tells us that Warners is trying hard to get the first trailer for BATMAN BEGINS out for the opening of SPIDER-MAN 2, June 30. If the trailer isn't complete by that time, the studio has struck a deal to place the BATMAN trailer with 20th Centiry Fox's I, ROBOT opening July 16. The trailer will definitely be featured with the company's other superhero movie project out on July 30, namely CATWOMAN.

>> What will we get to see in the trailer for BATMAN BEGINS? On that matter our source was unsure; depending upon how much material is ready for the public eye, all we might get to see is of the Batman is just his new logo. As the date of the trailer's release draws closer more should be known.

Bale as Bats gets the cover of Entertainment Weekly this week, but save your cash, the article doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know. Fun pics of Bale looking all film noir moody and such. There are no new pics of Bats with the article, tho.

No Bats trailed with Spidey 2, from Cinescape.com:

>> Our trusted source returned to tell us that there won't be a trailer for BATMAN BEGINS attached to next week's release of SPIDER-MAN 2. Instead, an extended trailer for CATWOMAN (coming in at 2:04) will run with the second cinematic adventure of Marvel's wall-crawler.

>> The plan for Warners is to now finish the BATMAN trailer and saddle it to I, ROBOT (opening July 16). If that date also falls through, our source tells us that the Batman will definitely, absolutely and unquestionably be playing in front of CATWOMAN when it opens July 23.

The article added that even if there is a teaser trailer, it might just be like, the logo, and that's it. They've just started filming, so there probably won't be many images, if any.

from Batman-on-Film.com: possible scoop, possible rumor about the trailer that WB is putting together:

>> Thursday, June 17, 2004, 5:34 AM CST: This is from a new scooper. BOF can't vouch for the validity of the source and his report. However, based on my experience, it looks to be legit. "Unknown Dude" says that he has seen the BATMAN BEGINS trailer. I know how, but I can't reveal that. But I can give you his description of it....

1. Black screen, The WB logo fades in. It stays on screen for a few seconds, A little longer than normal, Then it fades to black. The black screen also stays for a few moments, then quietly some of the theme starts to play (I'm not too certain but I think it's the same theme they've used in the past for Batman trailers, But I defiantly know it was music from the Burton film). After about 10-15 seconds of darkness a complete white frame fades in, Then it looks blurry, Then we start to see shades of blue, Then it totally fades in. It's a very wide shot of a snowbound mass of land, with a small figure walking towards the camera (I kept thinking what the hell is this? They just must be using Batman music). Then it was an upclose shot of Bale, He falls into the snow. He starts coughing.

There is some voice-overs of different people, mainly Neeson. There are flashes of the rest of the cast, Bale talking about his fears, what drives him. Then We see a man slip on a strange looking gas mask. Very German/Nazi WW2 looking for the design of the mask. Probably the Scarecrow. A black screen, Batman standing on top of a building then jumping falling down towards the screen. Flashes of a fast moving train, What looks like a huge black tank and a helicopter and police cars. A few more flashes of some fast paced car action.

There are a few shots of the city (Which look very dark and pretty rough, Very unfinished). Then Bale's eyes appear over the skyline, Which fades into Bale's face in the Batman mask.

Then a black screen and the new bat logo fades in, kinda old school with a rusted finish. It slowly moves towards the screen with a bass dropping drone. The credits fade in "Next Summer - it Begins."

BOF disclaimer: take this with a grain of salt, but this description sounds cool.

The site also points out that Joe Chill will kill Bruce's parents, who have just been cast, as has the young Bruce who witnesses their murder. Joe Chill will NOT become the Joker nor have any relation whatsoever to the Joker in this film. They just shot the murder of Bruce's parents scene last week. The site Batman-on-film.com has a pic of the actor who plays Joe Chill - he looks suitably scruffy.

Last night the Batman Begins website posted pics of the non-batsy cast members: Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Gary Oldman as Lt. Gordon (looks like a Village People castmember with that moustache), Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, and Liam Neeson as Henri Ducard

But no Mr. Watanabe.

from Cinescape.com:

Where did the trailer for BATMAN BEGINS go?

Earlier this month we reported (through one of our most trusted sources) that Warner Bros. had completed a trailer for BATMAN BEGINS. The studio's plan was to strike a deal with 20th Century Fox and place the BATMAN trailer attached to Fox's I, ROBOT. A deal was reached between the two companies and theaters managers were notified via email and fax that the BATMAN trailer would be playing on their screens by July 16. Fox even confirmed that the BATMAN trailer would accompany its cans of I, ROBOT to theaters.

There's just one big problem: there is no BATMAN BEGINS trailer playing in front of I, ROBOT today.

The answer is simple: somewhere, someone at Warner Bros. decided it wasn't the right time just yet to show audiences the BATMAN BEGINS trailer, and so it was yanked from playing on I, ROBOT's scorecard. Instead, we're now told that WB's back-up plan is to have theaters place a trailer for either CATWOMAN or EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING with showings of I, ROBOT.

Additionally, instead of the new BATMAN trailer playing with CATWOMAN (which we insist had been the plan a couple of weeks ago), Halle Berry's superheroine flick will instead be accompanied by a trailer for SOUND OF THUNDER, the time travel-gone-awry sci-fi film starring Edward Burns.

So there you have it. If you had been one of the many awaiting the opportunity to see what the new Dark Knight looks like on-screen, you'll have to remain patient a little while longer. Nevertheless, it does seem a missed opportunity. Where else could Warners cash in on the combined interest of those eager to check out CATWOMAN? It's not like there's any other major comic book event taking place this month which will have the attention of thousands of comic book fans...

Unless you remember that the San Diego Comic Convention happens next week -- and a BATMAN BEGINS panel just happens to take place one week from today, with one of the film's actors and its screenwriter in attendance. If you're asking if we know something will happen for sure at Comic-Con, we don't...but it sure seems like a pretty good place to show that missing BATMAN trailer, doesn't it?

from Aint It Cool News - this sounds like it just might be for real:

-------------------------------
Hey Harry

Brundlefly here - my last post was a review for 'Around the world in 80 days' - i copped a lot of crap in the talk backs for reviewing an 'illegal copy' ala 'The Hulk' - well it wasn't an illegal copy i saw - i viewed the film while doing my job....anyway, thought i'd mention it because this is something i also saw during the course of my day today.

I was privy to a rough cut of the 'Batman Begins' trailer.

I usually find trailer descriptions tedious but for this film I'll make an exception. ..

Here's a shot by shot (stylistically, the films look is raw &bleak, in fact it looks a lot like Nolan's 'Insomnia'...funny that, being the same cinematographer...)

Anyway -

The silvery warners Logo appears (like the Harry potter one)

(Christian Bale's voice narrates the trailer in a raspy, low voice)

* "They told me there was nothing out there"

A low angle shot tracking in front of a bleak rainswept wayne manor. It appears to be a wake. A few people mill about with black umbrellas.

*"they told me there was nothing to fear"

Shot of Alfred (caine) with an umbrella, standing in the rain with a young Bruce next to him.

* Low angle shot looking up from the bottom of a well

- A silhouetted young boy falls through the boarded up opening, he drops down towards the camera, debris flying about him.

* back to close up of small boy in the rain next to Alfred.

"but the night my parents were murdered i caught a glimpse of something..."

*flash cut to a terrified young Bruce cowering in terror, he is partially splattered in blood..

*"....I've looked for it ever since" - an adult Bruce walks slowly along a rainy dock looking out over the ocean. Fades out.

*shot of a rugged iceland mountain range.

*bruce's lonely figure climbs to the top of a snowy mountain range and begins to walk down the other side towards a lonely settlement.

*"I went around the world....searched in all the shadows"

In the barren, icey tundra Bruce enters what looks like a tibetan village, it's desolate, run down, delapidated...

*"and there is something out there in the darkness".

In a blizzard, Bruce climbs a stone stairway to a hilltop monastery.

*"something terrifying..."

Bruce enters the monastery in a shot similar to Aragorn entering King Theodan's keep at Helm's deep in The Two Towers - pushing two massive doors open, light shafts in etc...

*"...that will not stop until it gets revenge"

A feral looking Bruce sits in a dungeon like room, he's dishevelled, dirty.

A shadowy figure moves towards him - we do not see it's face - Bruce's head snaps around to see the assailant - the music climaxes - cut to black -there is a long pause...

*shot of Christian Bale's face , he says: "me"

There is a flash frame of the picture we've already seen - a brooding, costumed Batman in dramatic lighting -cuts to black - out of the blackness comes the rust coloured, revamped bat logo - no title - it says "summer 2005'"

so there you go Harry - personally i think it looks fantastic - Nolan you da frickin' man.

Brundlefly out

And here we go, Bale as Bats:

I don't like it. I was hoping for more of a Mazzuchellish back-to-basics approach, and this is far too busy for my tastes.

Still, at least it looks like he can move in it.
