I listen to Radio 1 a lot. Radio 1 constantly annoys me. Radio 1 regularly angers me. I only listen because I'm stupid. I know this.

I am fucking done with that shit. On the way to work, Edith Bowman reading a text, I have never heard the word Chav said with so much palpable hate, she even left appropriate amounts of silence on either side of the word, and put on a silly italicised voice, for that word only.

Done done done.

Public service broadcasting? HAHAHAHA!

Last week they had a headline "4 soldiers killed in roadside bomb: Investigating possible links to Iran"

Good God.

So that's 'chav' and 'gay' that Radio 1 think are acceptable non-offensive terms to use...

State, this seems redundant and I feel kinda stupid for asking on the grounds that unofficial board policy, that the c.h.a.v.-word is persona non grata, seems to me entirely justified, but what was the context? If you don't recall, no need to reply.

Perhaps those of us who don't, like me, could start listening to Radio 1, purely in order to then boycott it.

It was segment on stupid things people do in shops.

She was reading a text from a listener about a... chav ...that asked for a refund because his trainer's got scuffed by a trolley

I think it's a wrong-headed attempt to be iconoclastic and querky just like he would have wanted by describing him as 'irrelevant' and his flavour of leftwing politics as 'pessimistic'.

I rather feel you'd need a more solid base in comedy and not-being-right-wing than Fox has to pull this off.

Actually, on Vonnegut... I know that it was a tribute, and, you know, 85 years old, good run, all that stuff, but I did get a tiny bit irked with everybody deciding that the best way to deal with his death was a blog, LiveJournal or Barbelith post saying, simply, "So it goes". Were I a child or grandchild of the fellow, I might find this ostentatious stoicism from a whole shitload of people who had not actually met their father/grandfather a tiny bit wearing.

You know, over time.

Me think it almost not as wearing as everyone deciding not to write like Bizarro when talking about old Bizarro comic that was not just released.

"So it goes"

But Tannhauser, it is a phrase he used *himself* in his work you see, so it shows that one has read Slaughterhouse 5. It's more about the social inclusion than remembering the man, bringing people together to say "so it goes" and stroke their chin wisely, it's what he would have wanted I am absolutely sure.

Although I could be wrong...

"And So It Goes" is a ballad written by Billy Joel in 1983, though it wasn't released until six years later. It appeared as the tenth and final track of his megahit album Storm Front.

"And So It Goes" is a ballad written by Billy Joel in 1983...

It's also a rocker written by Nick Lowe and released in 1979 or thereabouts, featuring one of my favorite opening lines in pop: I still remember the night the kid cut off his right arm. Complete fucking non sequitur.

The Nick Lowe song is a cracker - I was wondering why I'd been singing it in my head for the last couple of days.

Of course, the changes and melody are pretty blatantly stolen from Steely Dan's "Reeling In The Years," which is no slouch in the earworm department either.

If you mean me, MC, please bear in mind that you were one of about seven thousand people who did it. Also that it went here purely because of the preceding comment about Vonnegut, rather than because it actually occasioned headsick and rage - my line was "slightly irked", and because it was not unique to Barbelith. If I'd personally contacted everyone who had done it, I would a) be overreacting wildly and b) still be busy working through the list, which was sort of my point.

Actually, I felt something similar when Baudrillard died and lots of people offered some variation on "Jean Baudrillard has died... ah, but did he? Did he really? Ahhhh....."- which was worse in a way because rather than being a tribute to the resonance of his writing it was largely a throwaway joke about a man whose work they had often no real familiarity with - that is, his death was relevant primarily in terms of providing an opportunity to make that joke. At least the Vonnegut response was, I assume, sincere in all cases - it was just lots of people being sincere at once, in a line, on my friends view. Nobody to blame, nobody singled out for criticism, just a collection of environmental factors.

Yeah, I did mean you dude. I really did feel like you were having a pop at me, but what I should have done was step back, take a deep breath, and not been a wanker about it.

I'm taking everything insanely personally at the moment and I apologise sincerely.

Hmm. While reading this particular part initially makes me want to spit bile:

The judge criticised her for still seeming defiant. The three other defendants wept as the offence was described.

Defending the women, who admitted child cruelty offences, Rupert Taylor said they were not wicked.

The three daughters had never been in trouble with the police before. But they were ill-educated, had few advantages in life, and did not realise what they were doing was abhorrent.

Mr Taylor said that although they had treated the infants so badly, family was important for them and they were all very close. "They are ashamed and frightened," he said.

The judge said the "horror" of what they did meant it was tempting to jail them.

I also have to say that I'm really not sure what prison would achieve. It rarely does achieve anything much, after all.

I am however not saying that I have any actual answer - I'm just pretty certain that imprisonment isn't necessarily it.

You fucking arse. What the fuck is the underclass? What the fuck are you doing coming to my house and taking like that? You know what I think about that, about you and your opinions. It's my right to ask you not to do that, here in the place I live. Don't come here and say that stuff. If you do then I will argue with you. I have the right to say that, I have the right to ask you to go.

I am not a stroppy bitch. I am not 'difficult'. TBM should not be sad he is with me.

No.

Yeah, I can see the arguments against prison, but there should be some form of incredibly hefty punishment, apart from just taking away their kids, who they clearly couldn't give a fuck about anyway.

Hate your kids? Cool. Get 'em to fight until they get taken off you. It's okay, you won't go to prison or anything.

1) Fuck off BNP rally in my town centre.

2) Go away please, Mister Zionist and Mister Maltese Nationalist. Of your own accord. Because otherwise, because of your bullshit, loud, and unconsidered opinions, I'll have to throw you out, and considering that you're friends of housemates that won't be very nice. It will happen if it has to, however. You do not say "We should shell boats with asylum seekers in them" without justifying, and you do not tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, in my house.

Here is a quote from Mister M*** of ******** Cafe, a sheesha joint I frequent and where until now I have had good relations with the staff: "Hello sir. Please, may I ask, have you brought your Jewish friend? Because we have had complaints."

This is getting very annoying very quickly, but it's not really me I'm bothered about - obviously my two irritations have been pestering the locals as well.

As a straight line lobbed right smack over the plate, you don't really want a reply to that, do you? Because I'd have to stab myself for the first six glib remarks that would come up. And then bleach my brain to excise the Golda [fullstop] Meir [fullstop] stripped [fullstop] down [please, please fullandentirestop] image-extrapolation.

GARRRRRGH.

Our mortgage lender are holding up our loan because, get this, the name on our application, my legal name (John Feerick) is not the same as the name on my W-2 forms or my freelance paychecks (Jack Feerick).

What.
The.
FUCK.

Now I've got to, at a minimum, get a notarized document saying that yes, this is my nickname, and yes, my bank cashes checks written out to either name, and there's been no attempt to deceive anyone; I may even have to go to an attorney and file a d/b/a document, thus giving my own fucking name an independent quasi-corporate existence.

I can't help wondering if they'd do the same for a James/Jim or a William/Bill. Is "Jack" really that uncommon, that intelligent professional people don't simply take it read that "John Feerick" and "Jack Feerick" are the same fucking person?

Or is it simply that (as I suspect) the people at our mortgage lender are sadistic, power-drunk fucks, and, owing to our spotless credit rating and immaculately-kept financial records, lacking any legitimate reason to run us through the usual round of hoops, are simply seizing upon whatever ridiculous niggling detail they can find so that they will not be denied the pleasure of seeing us jump when they say so?
