First 20 minute of working day: discussion with highest-ranking female official in the entire organisation about why women really have it all these days, and feminism should be 'saved' for other places (one of which, to be fair, she comes from, and yes, it sucks a lot more than in the UK).

What infuriated me was that everyone chipped in to comment on a recent professorial inaugural lecture that they hadn't attended, saying that the findings 'seem a bit sweeping' and 'didn't really seem likely'. I politely pointed out that there may have been some FUCKING RESEARCH going into it, seeing as the speaker WAS A PROFESSOR OF THIS SHIT. But whereas other kinds of research are conducted rigorously and peer-reviewed, research about gender is obviously written off the top of one's head on a cornflakes packet, and can be directly disproved by an anecdote about your mate who nicked her husband's pension.

The really important thing to bear in mind is that men in the audience might have been vexed. Wouldn't want anyone to be vexed by social research.

ARRRG! I just found out that my parents don't want to support me this summer, and that in addition to an internship i need to find a real, paying, probably shit job for the other half of the week.

And I just checked my midterm grades, only to find that two of my classes (for which I was waitlisted), the teachers never got around to taking me off the waitlist, even though they assured me I am in the class. So now I don't have midterm grades for 1/3 of my classes. Midterm grades which are about to get looked at as part of my application to the only program in the school from which I have a hope of graduating...

Know what you mean, Mordant. It's annoyingly sloppy, that usage. I recently discovered that the venerated TS Eliot is to blame because of an article he wrote in the thirties (I think, can't immediately find the reference) where he used the term literally in its "split + mind" etymological sense in that annoyingly banal way, in an otherwise sound article he wrote.

Made me (just a little) more understanding, despite being in the trade, of the layperson's confusion. People do like to simplify, even if it's entirely bogus. I expect I do the same with terms associated with other specialties. Multiple Personality Disorder or Dissociative State are less user-friendly diagnostic categories, admittedly.

Then another friend suddenly has a seizure (something that's literally only started in the last four or five months, and which she's only just had diagnosed as epilepsy) and gets taken home. Then I get home, take Sheena out for a walk. Coming back from Stokey common, I see someone sat in the middle of the road, and am starting to run to see if he's okay, when I see him lift his bottle to his mouth and yell at his mate "I nearly got run over! I feel so alive!!!"

Fucking prick. So what if the guy who nearly ran you over is really freaking out about it, and this impairs his driving and puts someone else at actual risk of actual real injury or actual real fucking death? The fuckers who run the university I work at have hired a new basketball coach. The previous coach had a poor record and was fired, and the university had to pay him $600,000 to get rid of him (insane severance packages piss me off).

Even better though, the new fuckstick coach is going to be clear $975,000 PER YEAR to tell people how to play basketball. That is about 255 full ride scholarships and more then 10 professors.

To continue Iran annoyance. I'm really fucked off that the papers today were full of images of the female soldier who had been captured by the Iranians and who had been 'forced to wear a headdress!', because that is somehow degrading.

I just don't understand the argument.
