Quizmania? Quizmania! I'll give you bloody Quizmania! Get the hell of my TV screen you con-merchants! I mean, TWO terrestrial channels with THREE hours of this shite is TOO MUCH. What happened to 'Renegade', 'Tropical Heat', or the much missed 'Sledge Hammer'? Late night TV schedules aint what they used to be. In the week BBC2 usually has the OU to save my brain, but tonight it's Ceefax with pan-pipes. Honestly, I despair...

Bloody Quizmania...grrr...

Sorry BBC2. I typed too soon. "Rough Science" with the lovely Kate Humble is much better. Thanks.

Still, I remember the days of 'Prisoner Cell Block H' and 'Married with Children'. Or all-night international animation shorts on Channel 4.

Grr...Bloody Quizmania...

Ha. As I can remember Reb was my first telecrush when we were wee Triplets. Putting the collar of my pjs up in imitation of her Reb-ellious* prison style. Then my TV broke and I didn't see her for years til she surfaced under an assumed name in Ramsey Street. But the love had grown old.

Grown cold.

Sledge Hammer

Sledge Hammer. Yes.

I still can't get used to Reb being a wholesome Christian mother and grandmother on Neighbours. I keep expecting her to pull up her collars and give a sneaky look to the camera, then (I dunno) knock someone's head off with a spade (I know, "That wasn't her in the classic 'Shed' episode").

For me, the best character by far was Bea Smith. My friend even had a band named after her for a while. And I'll admit, when she died* and they had that "Best of B" type episode, I almost cried... Oh alright then, I did cry...just a little mind...

And thanks for YouTube link. I'm smiling now.

*Off-screen, in another prison! Oh the cruelty...

The hate seems to be pretty strong recently! I hate aeroplanes and all who fly on them, because I live under a Heathrow flight path, because they may be destroying the environment, because this country is becoming Airstrip One, because people can say: “ well why live near an airport” to which I am forced to reply: “because I work in the area, I’m poor and the rent is cheap and because, due to the governments refusal to tax air fuel I pay about £300 a year in tax so you can enjoy cheap flights and indulge your pampered, arrogant, self righteous fucking lifestyles.” I would like to see all the planes drop from the sky, preferably with as many frequent fliers as possible on board.

For FUCK'S FUCKING SAKE!

YOU! My fucking employer! Why did it take you so long to get your fucking arses in gear and get my pay into my bank account?

Why the fuck did you fail to do it one week, then fail again the second week when i'd GIVEN YOU MY FUCKING ACCOUNT DETAILS FOR THE SECOND FUCKING TIME?!

AND YOU! My fucking bank! Why the fuck did you see fit to charge me when my direct debit couldn't get paid through?! How can you possibly justify CHARGING ME FOR NOT DOING ANYTHING!? you didnt give my phone providers, my landlord, OR my insurance company any money when their direct debits asked for it, so WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU CHARGING ME £35 PER UNPAID ACTION?!

Why, dear employer, did you FAIL TO PAY ME ON THE DAY THESE DEBITS WERE DUE?

Why, darling fucking bank, did you not cancel these direct debits to stop me receiving a total of ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FIVE FUCKING POUNDS WORTH OF CHARGES IN ONE WEEK.

Why, oh broken unsolved mystery of ineptitude of an employer, did you, when you finally did get round to paying me (THREE FUCKING WEEKS LATE) only pay me HALF OF THE WAGES DUE TO ME - just enough to cover the fucking ridiculous charges incrued due to your twatting fuckups?!

Why, my sneering bloodspiller of a bank, did you, when i came in with a letter from my emplyer stating that the late payments were in no way my fault, say 'We cannot return these charges'? Why did you say i would have to try to get the money out of my employer?

Why the fuck did you both spring this on me THE WEEK BEFORE I GO INTO HOSPITAL TO HAVE AN OPERATION THAT WILL PUT ME OUT OF WORK FOR AT LEAST THREE WEEKS?!

Why do I have to stress my fatigued mind and take a day off my relaxing holiday to travel by train with a broken collarbone in order to sort out my rent payments?!

Why do i know that this whole tale of bullshit will necessitate at least two months' more money-oriented stress and worry. Why do i know that i will ask every possible person, talk to every consumer rights organisation and write to every fucking manager, yet i will still never see that £175 again?!

WHY THE FUCK SHOULD I HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE SHIT THAT GETS DUMPED FROM THE ANUS OF OUR SOCIETY'S TWISTED MONEYMINDS?!

I just wanted to relax under a shady tree and maybe talk to a few cats. But no. Some motherfucker always has to spoil the fun.

That, and i seem to have returned too late for the 'burning down the haus' thread.

PISSED OFF!

I can't beat that.

I too have been victim of certain banks' ineptitude. It seems the whole system is set up to allow them to charge you what they want, when they want and however often they want.

And your employers should pay you back every penny you've lost due to their total amateurism. Demand it. Nicely.

Aw, man,... trampetunia, I thought I had it bad regarding wages owed, but your troubles trump mine hands down. My heart goes out to you.

Maybe you should change banks (if you can) in protest and cancel those Direct Debits - I've heard too many stories about Direct Debit fuck ups to understand why people still trust them out of convenience.

It's also shame you're not a journalist (are you?). I remember bumping into a friend in the Hackney Housing Benefits Office once after ze'd just been given a digital camera. Unusually for me, I let hir take a few pictures of me looking bored, as I'd already been there for an hour and a half, but eventually the time came for us to go to the booths and deal with our particular benefit problems. I was amazed: for the first time EVER the person on the other side of the booth was actually nice and helpful, and when I say nice I mean really nice. And ze wasn't a new face, either. Afterwards, my friend told me ze had noticed the same unusual behaviour with hir benefits officer. My theory: they thought one of us was a journalist. I swear, the next time I go down there, I'm taking a camera and a Dictaphone.

Oh, and best of luck for the operation.

.trampetunia: If it's any consolation, it might still be worth challenging those bank charges. Here's a link to the Govan Law Centre, who show you how to go about it and claim a good success rate. According to them, if the bank is charging you as a punishment, rather than to cover their administrative costs, they're probably breaking the law (As I understand it, a legal precedent has yet to be set, since most banks are much keener to refund your money than go to court and risk having this very lucrative scam dismantled).

Oh really. For Fucks' sake...

So my mobile has now been cut off due to unpaid funds.

Funds that the lady in the bank ASSURED ME HAD GONE THROUGH.

So i ring up the phone company and ask what can be done, and they need a direct payment with a card. So i say i'll ring back when i've checked my balance.

So i go to my bank's website and try to log on, but am told 'We are unable to log you onto your account, please call [phone number]'.

So i call the phone number.

'Hi, i've just tried to log onto my internet banking, but it didnt work and told me to ring this number.'

'Oh okay. Yes the reason you haven't been able to log on is that one of your accounts is £70 overdrawn.'

'So you stop people accessing their internet banking services when they are overdrawn?'

'Yes.'

'What number should i ring to complain about this?'

'It's just the way the system is set up. There's nothing anybody can do about it.' [I hate this one the most - 'it's just the way the system is set up...' - WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK SETS UP THE SYSTEM?!]

'So how am I meant to transfer funds between my accounts?'

'I can do this for you now. Oh I'm afraid your other account has no funds [Because banks, in their infinite wisdom and greed still see fit to makes us wait THREE FUCKING DAYS FOR EVERY FUCKING TRANSFER THAT GOES BETWEEN DIFFERENT BANKS, EVEN THOUGH IT WILL TAKE THEM LESS THAN A SECOND TO HAVE THEIR COMPUTERS SWAP THE NUMBERS AROUND!]'

'Okay. never mind. Thanks. Bye.'

So i now have to wait for the money to arrive in my account so that i can then ring somebody up and have them transfer funds to an account i have been trying to close for months, but have been unable to due to my lack of money and the growing overdraft it has on it due to - yep, BANK FEES. Once they have done this, I will be allowed (ALLOWED?!) to access my online banking services and sort out the rest of my payments.

I might even be able to get my phone working again.

Of course, this means my holiday will have to be delayed by a day so i can sort all of this stinky, stinky shit out.

I'm fucking sick to death of banking systems, banks, direct debits and money in general.

I. JUST. WANT. TO. SIT. UNDER. A. NICE. TREE. AND. TALK. TO. CATS.

Thanks, everybody, for the condolances and advice.

Metal hands: My employer should pay me the charges they caused, but i have only been in their employ for three weeks. And it's bar work. I figure they'd quicker drop me than have to pay me nearly a week's wages. I might ask quietly tho, and see what they say.

Paranoidwriter: I may well have to change banks. I'm sick of this shit. My problem at the moment is that I have a heaving £2000 student overdraft that is interest-free for the next year. I'm not sure many banks would be willing to take that on. But at the moment, i suppose it's costing me more to bank with *am i allowed to name them, or is there a risk of accusations of slander?* than it would to have an overdraft with interest.

The journo idea is an excellent one. I have a friend with an impressive-looking camera. I also have a friend with a video camera. But i suppose video stuff is more likely to cause a bit of a fuss...

The op went fine, thanks. It was just a simple bone-pinning thing - a hangover from my idiot student days of rolling down hills when drunk :-)

Pan: Thanks for the link; the site looks like it'll be a great help. It'd be pretty good to get that money back, really.

So, can anybody recommend a good bank in the uk? Preferably one that is actually a bit forgiving and not too excessive with its fees? Preferably one that doesn't market itself as 'ethical' while ripping off its customers?

Failing that, A bank with a good logo will do.

SICK OF IT!

Dear trampetunia.

I have been faced with a similar situation before by an employer.

As I believe teh law stands your employer is responsible for any charges related
to you being overdrawn/and payments missed if they have failed to pay you on an agreed pay date in contract.

At this time of night I can only find this link that refers to the situation that you are in

adviceguide.org.uk

It advises that you contact your nearest Citizens advice bureau for more information.

OK, for all you employers out there: when you employ someone to do some work for you and they not only do it, but do it bloody well, that's your cue to pay them on time. Telling me that the cheque will be posted when it won't be, and then that it has been posted when it obviously hasn't, simply doesn't count. The cheque was supposed to be here on fucking Monday! Indeed, because of your ineptitude I'm going to have to borrow more money so I can eat, which means I have now got take a 3/4 hour walk in a fucking heat-wave to get it! Oh, and here's hoping the bailiffs don't knock my door this weekend, eh?

Seriously, as people you seem lovely and personable, but as employers you make me want to scream, "oh cock-off you fuck holes!" and barge into your offices and commandeer a laptop or three.

"Don't make me angry. You won't like me when I'm angry."

fuck, Australian politics is very depressing these days. My (horribly emotionally abusive) ex is one of the right wing factionalist young Liberals, and it's pretty disgusting, what I saw of it (And that was five years ago, it's only become worse since).

I can only hope that the guy who said it'll tear the party apart is right (and that it happens state and federal), and that it happens before/during the next election, because even with the ALP promising to roll back the IR reforms, I don't think there's a huge likelihood of them getting in...

Not that the ALP being an unopposed major party would necessarily be great, but it'd sure be better for me (being a relatively impoverished university student in an industry where I'm about as valuable as a storefront window [i.e. very, but easily changed]).

And maybe the democrats would stop imploding, and the greens could become a viable political entity...

I don't want to let hateyness turn me into a hater, but this weekend someone broke the all-time record for 'I don't mind The Gays but why do they do this thing (which I do all the time but I've never noticed because I'm straight), they should stop' 300 metres freestyle.

Not Pride, not pubs, not PDAs but...

Why do they get to call themselves gay and lesbian?

Not as in 'It was such a lovely word and they've ruined it', but Why do they get to have any name for their reality at all?
Because everyone from bungee jumpers to Marxists who shares an affinity with another person can call themselves by a name, but not the homosexuals.

Clue stick: If you're complaining about something that people of all sexualities do, but you mainly want The Gays to stop doing it, then you may be motivated by unexplored homophobia.
If you keep listing things The Gays either should have done (the useless cowards), or shouldn't be allowed to do (the show-off bastards), you may be motivated by unexplored homophobia.
If you keep doing it in a conversation with me when I have torn you off a fucking strip, you may be motivated by - I dunno, some kind of brain triple bypass? And I will just have to ask the fairies for assistance in rodding your synapses.

Here's an idea - shall we get every single straight person on the planet to acknowledge their bisexuality before we start in kicking The Gays? Yes? No? Fisty eye-poke?

WRT the bank charges thing of about a week ago, tread carefully. I've heard that the banks new wheeze is to cancel the account of anyone who challenges their ridiculous pricing scheme thing, unfortunately for the public, if they've got into that situation they have broken the contract they signed with the bank in the first place, and being blacklisted by that bank might give you problems getting another account with another bank.

I don't have a link, but I heard it on Radio 4 (therefore irrefutable).

Apparently they only do it if people take them to court over the charges. Their standard policy is to clear the charges but close the account of the person in disagreement with them.

They state 'commercial reasons' for this, as if the litigator was to win then that would constitute a test case, thereby setting a legal precedent and thus stopping them from applying these charges in the future - forever!

Their argument for closing the account is that the relationship between bank and customer is no longer tenable due to the lack of trust between them, and they are perfectly within their rights in doing so.

The gits.

TODAY:

4:20 am My alarm sounds and I crawl out of bed, head downstairs to make my customary strong, black coffee and sit outside, smoking, listening to the birds. Not happy, as I have to go to work, but a contented calm settles over me as I take in the dawn and enjoy the garden.

5:00 am I leave home and notice my fuel gauge is beeping at me - I need to fill up. No biggie, methinks - there's a Tesco on my way to work. I'll stop there and fill her up.

5:10 am I pull up at a fuel pump and notice the unleaded nozzle is locked off, but the two diesel pumps are working. I grunt, climb back into the car and reverse to the pump behind me, whose unleaded nozzle is OK.

5:12 am I fill the tank with over 50 litres of unleaded petrol at a cost of almost £50. I proceed to the till and pay, buying two packets of Smints in the process, which I am addicted to.

5:15 am I leave the forecourt and drive around the corner, playing the audiobook of Johnathan Strange & Mr Norrell on my ipod through the stereo. I love my relaxed drive to work - one of the few moments of total calm in my life.

5:17 am My head spins, my heart exits my mouth and I think 'I drive a fucking diesel and I've just fucking filled the fucking tank to the fucking brim with fucking unleaded!'. I stop the engine before any damage is done and course backwards in neutral to the side of the road. I call Green Flag.

5:45 am That was fast. They arrive and hook me up the pickup van and proceed to tow me away. En route the driver says his garage actually do a very cheap fuel tank drain - in fact it's so cheap it's only £192.33 (inc VAT)! I swear.

6:45 am My fuel tank is drained and 5 litres of diesel are put in. I have just sat through the mechanic regaling me with highly humorous stories of other 'dickheads' who put the wrong fuel in their cars. Apparently I was 'very lucky', as the last 'total twat' had to pay over £2000 as his engine needed to be replaced. Lucky me.

7:00 am I return to Tescos with an empty tank and fill her up with another £50 worth of fuel. This time diesel - I checked.

Total cost: approx £290

A friend of mine had something similar happening to her and it was not her fault:

The liquid she tanked and that killed her motor was...water! I don´t know, how she and the station settled this, but why did they have water in their tank? Years later, we still hadn´t found an explanation.
