Hallo, Paper Spaceboy

These comics are always so much better when we write them, anyway.

Slagar, good eye. I just thought it was a giant overexaggerated artistic interpretation of a blood moon/mars imitator behind a busted streetlight. The space museum line went by me.

Mario, I'd guess the original Libra's story is more closely in line with Barry's state of being at the beginning of DCU #0. So if it's not literally Barry under the Libra hood or some dark Barry comeback tour, split evil Barry twin, etc. I'd say there's not a lot pointing to the Zoom theory within the story so far.

I can see the Barry/Libra symetry paralleling the Darkseid/Orion battle (I think) will be within Turpin's very soul.

After #1 many pointed out the MY FATHER USED TO SAY THAT line as being a clue to Orion's hitchhiking within Turpin. #2 Desaad recognizes Turpin as Darkseid. In the sketchbook Grant describes Turpin as KIRBT DRAWN BY MILLER. We're treating the New Gods in this tale as truly divine so I can see some form of metaphysical "battle for possesion of Kirby's/Turpin's soul" erupting soon. It can play so meta... the creations battle in/for the creators mind/imagination...

Only just read #2, and then allowed myself to catch up on the last 9 or 10 pages of this thread.

My thoughts are along the lines of yours, soup.
.. that Turpin's mind may become the theatre of war for a battle of New Gods.
I too am getting strong vibes of The Filth and of Greg Feely's own mental breakdown/ conflict, which is reinforces the theory for me so far.

(Having re-read the issue 1, I really didn't see any evidence for transfer between Boss Dark Side and Turpin (Turpin is the one who initiates contact, and Dark Side peels him off, and no burn or flash of light, etc.), but the later evidence does suggests that Dark Side may be within him.
Would it work to suggest that Dark Side has not 'transferred' into Turpin, but rather that Turpin has taken on/ been infected by an aspect of dark side, without Darkseid having entirely vacated the Boss Dark Side body?
Of course, I see no reason to assume that the transfer into Turpin was intentional by Darkseid. If we assume that aspects of Orion exist within him too, perhaps this was Orion's intention.)

So, is Turpin going to spend the rest of the series contacting/ experiencing further 'New-Gods'(or 'states-of-mind'), with the ultimate fate of the series (and DC Universe) resting on a decision to be made by him as the outcome of these conflicting emotions?

Well, I don't know!

The question may end up being... who's to say Darkseid can only inhabit one body at a time?

Doesn't Orion look a lot like his da', though? I mean spiritually as well as metaphysically. It's always been something he's struggled with. Couldn't they be confusing Orion for Dirk Seed?

FC Requiem:
Against my better judgement and the advice of this thread, I picked it up when I serendipitously found a comic shop as I was going to the train station.

Not much to add except that my biggest let down was that Tomasi seems to have decided that the efficient, quick, offhand death of J'onn wasn't 'big' enough...
...when surely the manner of his death was the whole point!?! Namely, that this is not the DC universe as it used to be.

Instead we get this mediocre, melodramatic run-around plus an emotionally-stunted clash of heroes and villains. We've seen it all before. I certainly hadn't realised that they would continue to be messing so directly with Morrison's work on FC.

(p.s. BUMP! So why is it that whenever I pluck up the courage to contribute to a thread, it starts to plummet down the list of recent replies? That's me straight back to lurking, well almost.)

As a data point, Grant verified that Darkseid (and only Darkseid) is in Turpin, over at Newsarama.

He also stated that the other evil gods are "emanations of his will", which should sound familiar to the Kabalists among you, and that Metron is the only non-Apokaliptan New God left.

Are we? This has almost completely dropped off my radar. I'm just waiting to see when the next issue of Patsy Walker: Hellcat comes out.

Preview for #3 up at Newsarama.

No shocking revelations, but we do see a scene from #1 from a different perspective.

FINAL CRISIS 3 IS HERE!!!

And it's awesome. The pace really picks up (it starts off with 9-panel grids that are used inventively--also, there's an instance of an 11-panel grid that's staggering) and this series really kicks into high gear with this issue. Lots and lots of story, tons of good moments and clues galore. Plenty of fodder for discussion.

Will wait for you guys to read it before I go into specifics, but I'm especially liking how the scenes are written.

Final Crisis #3 did it....

Slight spoilers for Final Crisis #3:

I really liked the layout of the few opening pages, especially the one with Montoya and Taleb, where the "meteor" drops. Also loved the return of our friends from Seven Soldiers.
The woman approaching Clark Kent in the hospital, who is she? Dug her dialog, might be because I've been reading the Fourth World omnibuses lately, but her dialog sounded like it was lifted right from a Fourth World comic. Not that it's surprising, considering the source material.
Also, who's the mysterious figure that lurks in the corner of the last panel of page 6, spying on our gloomy Monitor?

And I want to see Talky Tawny's adventures.. in a suit, with jetpacks.

In both instances, it looks kinda like Zillo Valla to me (the elder Monitor girl from issue 1, with the vaguely 90's Kryptonian headdress.) I have no idea what she's up to, if it's her.

Ah, ok. That makes sense.
I was about to ask if anyone else noticed the creepy, tiny hand on her shoulder, when I realized that in fact, it was her own hand and my eyes had been deceiving me. I'd hoped she had an imp or something following her around (no I don't).

I was kinda underwhelmed by the issue, actually. Nowhere near the page turner of #2. Biggest problem: everything that shoulda had some umph has been told to us in interviews for months.

Anti-Life taking over, Superman gearing up for his Beyond adventures... there were some nice little moments but kinda action heavy and empty for me.

And some of the coloring was washed out. REALLY washed out.

I'll read it again and maybe change my mind but it's not looking likely...

The source hand becoming that Macintosh pixelated hand cracked me up, I'll say that. Definitely an ominous sense at the very end of the issue... Morrison is good at making it feel like our heroes are Really In Serious Trouble, Truly.

Anyone else chuckle a bit when GA stares directly at the reader and gives his:

"If anybody falls for this authoritarian, militaristic crap, it'll prove I'm absolutely right about absolutely everything!..."
speech.

Kinda interesting given GM's thoughts on the fetish-ization of the modern soldier super-hero.

@Yotsuba: Great review! You crystallized my thoughts on how the scenes are being selected!

I have to add: I loved the hospital room scene between Jimmy Olsen and Clark Kent. There's a great exchange of dialogue between them (plus the subtle expression on Jimmy's face) that gets you thinking "Does Jimmy know? If Jimmy knows, does Clark know that Jimmy knows?" Great, understated drama with the li'l ambiguity. Kinda like what's going on between them in All Star Superman.

What really cracked me up was that a page later, we see that EVERYBODY "fell for it".

While I've been following (and mostly enjoying) FC so far there's a minor irritation now that I simply have to address:

There should be a comic book commandment for authors that says "If you have to resort to Nazi-speak and are not a fluent native speaker of the German tongue then - for GOD's sake - ask somebody who is! He will probably be glad to help you."

Usually, I have high praise for Morrison's work but the German speech balloons have been a real letdown this time round. Alan Moore has done it better and, yes, even Mark Millar has done better in that department.

I simply can't believe that 21st century DC lettering is unable to produce German umlauted characters. It should say 'Überfräulein' and 'Hölle'. BTW, the name 'Überfräulein' does sound rather ridiculous in German. If you want to have the appropriate Third Reich-associations it should have been 'Übermaid' (and I'm well aware that '-maid' will lead to slightly ridiculous assumptions on the part of English speaking readers, but trust me - it will do the trick.

And, even more unfortunately, the choice of 'Blutungen' is utter rubbish because part of the present progressive 'is ... bleeding' has been confused with the noun 'bleeding' so that now the German version implies: 'Is the sky having ... that time of the month?' which hardly conveys what's been intended here.

So what was being conveyed? The only German I know comes from Slaughterhouse Five and Wayne Newton.

Abraxas
10:46 / 07.08.08
Well, reverse-engineering to the best of my abilities I guess it originally said something like: ' I... I... I'm... Overgirl... urr' and 'No. Is the sky ... bleeding? Hell... is here.' with 'bleeding' perhaps alluding to the true meaning of the Bleed within/for the DC universe which Morrison has promised to reveal.

Then again, with Grant's penchant for "universe giving birth to itself" metaphors, maybe that WASN'T a mistake...
