Those are some good points, Petey. Maybe I am being too hard on the Granny.

Comedy will buy you a lot of lenience, but I do worry about granny's massive power issues.

Petey: what you say has merit, but on balance I still want to shove Granny and Glenn off Beachy Head in matching bath-chairs.

(While a guy with an electric violin plays "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" in the background, obvs.)

I hope that my previous request not to talk about you, AG, like you're not in the room will not be taken to mean that I find your comedy stylings at all funny. I hope that nobody brings you up in one of the periodic accusations of Barbelitism because I have no way of explaining why you get to say Oh sorry, was drunk, and people who I'd expect to tear apart somebody else let you slide with at worst a Shut up, softened by being addressed to you in your character as an alcoholic old woman. As best I can determine, you post enough non-comedy that the resulting balance is seen as acceptable, but would I advise anybody else to try that out and see how it goes? No. I don't think you're a troll nor do I think you should be banned, but if you decided to quit posting while (actually or pretending to be) drunk I don't think the board as a whole would be lessened.

As for flyboy's comment about the top 30 posters, that is matter of personal taste and doubtless there are as many such lists as there are members.

Really? Often, I was aiming them just at you, in the hope that we might marry one day.

I guess that's never going to happen now. And you're absolutely entitled to your opinion, of course.

I think the best thing for everyone concerned is if I just stop posting. Except possibly in Comics, every now and again.

Manifestly. Perhaps if we draw a line, with funny and interesting posts about video games and comics at one end and troll-fostering in the Policy at 2 in the morning at the other, and go from there?

Yeah, that was kind of going to be my next comment. Look, I'm as bad about staying up till 3 after a long day and getting a bit shouty because I should be in bed, or just plain drunkposting (although I tend to find that Sudafed brings on the evil more than beer, and I've generally got a lot better at cracking open Wordpad when I find I've cracked open my 3rd cold one).

But there's this kind of aggressive thing that creeps into your posts, AG, and gets more aggressive the more tired and emotional you get. I've gone from "Oooh, that was out of order--but the poor guy's going to be biting his knuckles when he reads it in the morning so let's not give him too hard a time" to reckoning that you kind of don't give a toss if you give someone grief for being mean to your pet troll de jour, since it keeps on happening.

I personally have no desire for you not to post, AG, but I'd appreciate just a bit more temperance sometimes. And feel free to tell me if I'm being a dolt, I may not be able to tell sometimes.

Stop being a drama queen. I said you're not a troll, shouldn't be banned, and I don't think you should post drunk. Since you don't care whether or not I find your act funny, why can't you at least address the issue of the behavior that other people find troublesome?

one point, oh
01:23 / 20.10.07
kangourou boxeur, I recognize that you're dealing with a troubling influence here, but can I say that I dislike your use of the term 'drama queen'. Frankly, and to start with, I dislike the term 'queen' as a pejorative, and I don't see how adding drama to it is suppose to alleviate its offensive nature.

Now I realize that its theatrical roots might, to the common man, mitigate its negative connotations. Queens, and I identify as a 'queen', may sometimes be 'dramatic', but honestly I've met many fundamentally mundane queens. Therefore, this being the 'son of barbannoy' thread, today it is you that I find annoying.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
02:06 / 20.10.07
Well, this is a thread all about the Barbannoying things, Med -- and it's perfectly reasonable to flag the use of a particular perjorative (O, HOW I LOVE ALLITERATION) if it's bothering you.

Personally, I'm Barbannoyed that the Lith feels a little cranky the last couple days, though that's a very general statement and I'm included in that crankiness. I don't know. The Barbehive's sweet hum is a touch out of synch. It'll correct itself.

Dovetailed- I assume you are making a claim of homophobia? Just looking around the usual bibliographic sources I can't see anything that points to a particularly queer origin, indeed one source points to 'Drama King' as an alternative for the male-identified, and Scarlett O'Hara as the first drama queen of American cinema. Admittedly, I'm having less success in looking for the derivation of the word, to see if it comes from gay culture. I'll get back to you on that one.

ONLY NICE THINGS
10:34 / 20.10.07
Sorry, I'm slightly confused. Dovetailed, do you mean that you identify as a gay man, and find the description "queen" disrespectful to gay men, even when applied to somebody not so identified? Or do you specifically identify as a queen, and find the use of that specific term disrespectful to that identification?

Papess
11:45 / 20.10.07
I just want to clarify that what I find sad about Dovetailed's statement, is this: "...today it is you that I find annoying."

Rather than directing the annoyance at the remark, it was directed at Kangourou, whom I know to be a very thoughtful and sensitive poster. My bet is that KB, (like Lady and Haus), is unaware of "drama queen" as being a homophobic and derogatory term. Now, I am indeed confused by that as well. Even doubly so because Lady has gone and used "queer". So, now I have no clue what is derogatory or not.

Well, the term "queer" is in common use--on the board and elsewhere--to mean things, people and concepts which are not gender- or heteronormative; it's used in a neutral or positive way rather than as a slur. Someone using it in a negativ way would get pulled up PDQ, I hope, whereas talking about queer fiction or queer theory is OK.

Dovetailed, I'm sorry you found the term drama queen objectionable but I think you're going to have to make a rather better case for its being unacceptable and homophobic.

I suppose the closest precedent was probably Shadowsax calling the plaintiff in the Duke case an "amoral attention whore" - although that was rather different, since the term was being applied to somebody working as a stripper, and thus to someone who might be identified as a sex worker, whereas Alex's Granny is to my knowledge not an actor.

I had no idea that "drama queen" might be interpreted as homophobic (assuming that's what the problem is). I'm very sorry to have offended anybody, and really, I'm not too invested in being able to use the term.

Growing up in the seriously racist, sexist, and homophobic U.S., I fully expect that I will have absorbed some of those attitudes and that they will at times manifest in my speech. I would much rather have it brought to my attention so I can understand and examine it than be allowed to slide as a reward for my good intentions. I appreciate the credit I'm being extended, but if Dovetailed or others can explain to me what's wrong with my usage, I'd actually quite appreciate it. If it can be done without italics, even better.

I think I can rephrase my comment without use of a term that's objectionable to Dovetailed or anybody else. What I was trying to say was that I thought Bob/Granny was saying that he doesn't care whether I find him funny or not. If he doesn't care about me, then I think he should ignore my opinion of his comedy persona and instead address the issues that others have raised instead of saying that he'll go into some kind of self-imposed exile in comics, which is not what anybody has asked him to do, I don't think.

I'm still dubious as to whether 'drama queen' is a term of homophobic abuse, seeing as it has several uses to mean 'top of', as in 'homecoming queen' or 'Queen of England'. Sure, searching it on Google you find it being used in a homophobic context but they are thirteen year olds who also use 'gay' as a term of abuse. So which came first?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK

I dunno, I'd always thought of it as being in the Kenneth Williams "oooh" sense of both "drama" and "queen", but I'd always assumed, if I'd ever given it any thought, that that was such an archaic usage as to no longer be relevant. I guess I thought its roots referred to homosexuality but that it wasn't a term of homophobic abuse anymore (or never had been) or something.

(It occurs to me that perhaps the first time I heard it used was on a sitcom or something where the double-meaning of "queen" was being played on, which could have coloured my interpretation of its meaning).

Given that "queen" as applied to a gay man originates, like certain other slurs, with a term used to describe women being applied to men to indicate an "unmanly" nature**, wouldn't it make more sense to complain that "drama queen" is misogynistic? Bit tricky to stick one on KB, though.

*to the best of my knowledge, if I'm wrong please correct.

**X-ref womanish, old woman, and so on, along with much nastier terms.

The reason I haven't been posting much of late (even though I had a poor average post-count at best), was the fact that things seemed too heated, too agressive for my taste. I can't put my finger on it, but it seemed like there was too much agression being focussed on things that needn't have escalated as they did.

I know I maybe coming across as pointing fingers of blame at people, but this is not my intention.

Damnit, now I feel like Neil.
