That is annoying. I don't use the ignore function for more than an evening ("Oh crap, so-and-so's flapping hir jaw again, better hit the ignore button till I'm sober enough to deal with hir") so I hadn't noticed, but the last time I checked I still had people on iggy from years back.

There is some sort of glitch because I am still ignoring Lord Switch from '05 I think, but have to refresh my current ignore weekly. One of those little things that niggles.

Even if ignore's still showing up it doesn't mean that you're ignoring people. I currently have Dead Megatron on ignore but can read everything he says.

Boboss: Darkmatter has been ignored in the past for similar behavior, and yet he's here doing it again. Even if we ignore him again now, there's a good chance he'll pop back up again in 6 months to a year and start doing the same damn thing.

We can stop it here, now. We have that power.

God, I love being unnecessarily dramatic.

Charrrelz, did you not say of the Fetch:

Not much important to add, just my two cents. Mostly, I just want to add another voice of support for the anti-censorship side. As dumb, inane, or innacurate someone's posts may be, that person should still be allowed to discuss it. To use Fetch as an example, perhaps his thread actually helped some see anti-semitism and the such in things they have read.

Any topic should be allowed for discussion on a discussion board. If someone has a problem with an idea, either look at a different thread or respond. It's not ideas we need to avoid, but people mindlessly spouting off offensive concepts in an offensive manner.

Has the world changed, or have you changed?

Actually Haus, a little of both. When I said that, it was before dribble drove me from posting and being active. Now, when I read the board I tend to get frustrated by the discussions and feel no desire to post, especially in the temple, which used to be my favorite part of the board (and still is, to an extent). I think Darkmatter's recent posts are an example--almost an archetype-- of the kinds of "conversations" I'm sick and tired of seeing around here.

If others feel differently, then they can vote against the ban, I'm not gonna hold any grudges, and will gladly accept the will of the many on decisions of this type.

Also, in the quote you put of mine, I want to point out this: "It's not ideas we need to avoid, but people mindlessly spouting off offensive concepts in an offensive manner." I'm not banning ideas here, I'm banning mindless spouting. (true, it is not yet mindless spouting of offensive concepts, but I think Darkmatter may be heading down that slippery slope when s/he brought up baby rape. Besides, I'll go ahead and consider myself offended by his offensive concept of how to converse.)

I think further discussion of this belongs in the policy thread just to keep things sorted and non-rotty.

Bannination is in the post.

What's annoying me today is a certain individual deciding that it would be cool to turn up here and plug his shit like nothing ever happened. What the everloving FUCK.

It's possible, DM, but I find the presentation of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion rather more offensive - hell, I found your thoughts on the evils of rap music more offensive, for that matter - than somebody spouting the kind of RAW/von Daniken/Grant Morrison conspiracy tosh that crops up all the time, with more spacing and better punctuation, around here. A case could very easily be made for banning quimper/darkmatter, but it hasn't been made, and it Barbannoys me that what could have been a pretty painless banning process has turned into a demonstration of the dangers of giving moderators banning powers. Thank you, the Temple.

To be perfectly honest Aunt Beast, I don't really remember Fetch all that well and therefore won't make a judgement till I dig through the old threads for a minute, if ever. I am still against the idea of banning in a way, and over use of banning especially, but I also still think it is a useful tool.

My reasons for asking for and supporting the Darkmatter ban include, but are not limited to, the fact that I think the inclusion of a lot of references to sexually violating small children makes this much nastier than the usual RAW/Von Danicakes.

I would not personally have put in the ban request at this point, but then again in the past I have been rather hesitant in asking for a ban of various people who I later realised I should have been vigourously trying to get rid of (including the Fetch).

There's a case for banning Darkmatter, absolutely, but it has not been made. Let's look at the babies issue. As far as I know, that has cropped up only twice, however - once at the start of a thread, and just now, after his starting post had received a deserved kicking.

So, that's one case to make. Another case to make might be anti-Semitism, although that would need to be based on a quote he took, I believe, from the John Cusack film "Max". Much less of a firm foundation than, for example, the Fetch.

However, neither of those cases were made, so now I find myself in the awkward situation of having to point out what appears to be precedent-setting mistreatment of a drain of time and will to post whom I would rather not have on Barbelith.

the fact that I think the inclusion of a lot of references to sexually violating small children makes this much nastier than the usual RAW/Von Danicakes.

I don't think ze is clear-cut bannable, but that particular bit was the hateful cherry on top that made my annoyance kneejerk to a frown and assume ze'd at least be discussed by mods (and I actually thought for a second it could be a fake just to test the ban function, or to see how the mods would act and behave with the new function -- I mean... 23, 2012, scifi-ish demiurges, Icke and lizard-people was just so beyond even the caricatures people joke about around here...).

I thought at first that ze could receive some form of helpful suggestion in a very lighter version of what Gipsy, Roy & others offered in the "tantric" thread (only not even near that much, since those people crossed up the line of guardian angels by far in their cool helpfulness). And, of course, address to his posting style and the way ze communicates (or the way he doesn't, really).

The other "meta" thread sounded a bit like a person almost begging for someone to tell hir to get away from those subjects for a good time. But this might be a bit overly "telepathic" from my part, almost saying it's someone needing Help (and possibly not all helpful to the discussion at hand). But nothing even near bannable (IMO, but people might have posting standards to which they could find that sort of thing undesirable, or at least wish to tell him that sort of thing isn't really what people want here).

I was never around to see this sort of thing pop up in the 'lith to be offended or annoyed about -- the fetch's or some others I only saw way later by lurking around on old threads. So this is way out of my depth to how the board deals with these things, but I'd figure people would at least try to talk to each other without much hurry and also talk to him first in some way they see fit before getting the chair ready.
(I suggest while knowing the board isn't here to be nice to assholes or even be nurse to loons, but still...)

I would have started to try to talk to him there if I thought I was able to be as helpful and constructive as I've seen people being in Barbelith.

(or ze could just be an undeserving asshole troll, what do I know... looking at past threads, it seems so. Asshole, at least -- usually trolls don't "talk" back, right? They just leave something and leave)

Some trolls talk back. Indeed, some will keep on talking back as long as you keep responding to them, lapping up the juicy flow of delicious attention for as long as possible.

Yes, I guess you're right.

It's only that at first, while reading bits of those threads where ze actually "talked" back, it seemed for a moment ze could just be genuinely (and unbelievably never-seen before) stupid -- but maybe not all that malicious.

But you're right. Reading some more drives home the desire -- hir being stupid or "not" (yeah right), malicious or "not" -- of not wanting any contact whatsoever with... it.

Yes, I was wondering about that.

Was he meaning that people on the Temple was academics-like (an "insult", for those without much brains making it simple for themselves that "it's all a wank" or something)?

Or was he fitting/deluding himself in with academics' circles (isn't that, like, another ass-hat version of teh trickstah's arrogance? Wanting the respectable glamour of something like Mircea Eliade, but being more like "The Secret"?)?

The 'ugh, academia' kiss-off was also vomited forth by Jason's #1 pal, best friend forev, ePop - I think the point is 'you with your useless quibbling about facts are not changing the world unlike I, teh magus'. Quite how the dynamic duo are doing so, mostly by patronising third-world traditions, propagating some remarkably dull and normal precepts about gender, and of course going on about rape as much as possible, is beyond me. It seems almost as if they are trying to make things stay exactly the same.

I'm also really sorry that Louv was a pal and collaborator of a large percentile of the few dudes I actively respect in the Temple, it really poisons the whole notion of magick altogether for me. I don't really know exactly why he and chummy make me so very fucking angry - possibly it's because they are such unbearable supercilious cocks.

Well, Jason may have been perfectly sincere in his posting - it seems like the UltraCulture project is a bit stalled, and a chunk of the people he has relied upon to provide copy for his books have withdrawn their inexpensive labour. His thinking may well be that, although a small number of members of Barbelith may be out of sympathy with him, he can still recruit from the broader mass of the Temple.

It's a shame, really - Jason always seemed a perfectly personable young man, and he does seem to have had some bad experiences and made some possibly unwise decisions lately. I imagine that Epop might have a similarly sad story, albeit one that had bedded down long before we encountered him. However, it seems like it's been a while since Jason added anything much to Barbelith except eBay auctions and aggravation. I hope he feels better soon, but I don't think this is a good place for his convalescence.

Ultraculture is not a project. According to J-Lo, it's his brand. Not sure how that fits in with the vision of UC as "a space in which individuals and groups can be free to dream on the social and global level, in the company of supportive others, and find the tools necessary for manifestation of those dreams" unless your dreams are relatively modest and logoed tote bags feature heavily therein.

And, while we're revising the role of moderators, can we change the title of "All-Star Superman" to "a small number of people want to keep bumping this thread to the top of Comics Books in case they are punished for insufficient devotion to the godhead?"

What would be best, I think, is if there are rumours of a film version.
