And I have to go to bed now, but no-one seems to be about, and I'm scared that if I log off there's gonna be no-one to argue the point. Shitting hell. I think you are doing just fine as well. But dang, why did Flyboy have to pick now to be having too much fun for Barbelith? Kinda give me a whole more appreciation than the already huge amounts I had for posters like Aunt Beast, Flyboy, and Haus, who seem to take point position on dealing with mopping up this kind of shit every damn day.

Thanks, Transfer. that's really appreciated. It's such a difficult thing to talk about, and I'm aware that I, as a recipient of male privilige probably have some crap opinions of my own that might come out throught stupidity rather than malice when wading into such issues, and all things considered I freely admit I'd be way more comfortable hiding behind Haus, so it's really nice of you to say that.

Speaking of appreciation, I very much appreciate that you guys take the time and fucking effort. I just wish you, and many more of the faithful, nay hopeful posters like your good selves (yadda yadda Barbelite) had more time to have fun and be genial.

Many apologies for this - I certainly don't see them as soley or even primarily such. I totally think it would be better if they never had to deal with any of that crap and could get on with other posting, and I don't think they have any more responsibility to deal with such shit than any other poster. My intent was just to acknowledge that they usually do ending up doing so, and from my point of view seem to be remarakably good at it, and to express appreciation and admiration for such. Apologies if I spoke out of turn.

Well, no, actually I do want to know that because I think this is something we do need to have out. I had mentally filed the Fetch issue under "well that sucked but at least everyone who opposed the ban on the grounds that bigotry is okay if it's magic bigotry either wised up or went elsewhere" and now I'm wondering if that is in fact the case.

In a broader sense I do agree. The circumstances which cause some of our best posters to have to spend much of their time firefighting rather than posting on other subjects are very Barbannoying. I can't see an easy solution to it though.

I mean ideally the rest of us would raise our games a bit and help out more, so it's not the same dozen or so posters who have to deal everytime, but for those of us who are basically cowards, and terrified of saying the wrong thing that's easier said than done.

I don't know if "relied on" and "typecast" are exactly the same thing, though.

I mean well, generally, but I'm a terribly wooly thinker, and usually make a dog's breakfast out of things even when I'm trying to help -- see the Daily Mail thread for an example of me making a flail at being decent, but spiralling into incoherency (and even being hailed as the Bad Analogy Poster Boy by Haus in a screen-long retread of a post from four months ago).

I certainly haven't "typecast" Haus and Flyboy as the heavies, but I do appreciate their willingness and talent for dealing with BS. Some of us just aren't as good at it.

Of course, the mere fact that for whatever reason they have become 'heavies' doing a lot of boundary-work may work as a feedback loop where increasing amounts of new and old posters come to see them as heavies, call on their services as performers of heavy duties and thus reinforce the typecasting.

Lastly, my bad if it sounds like I'm trying to blame any particular individuals for this. No crime has been committed, no conventions flouted. Noone needs to apologise, IMO.

And I hear ya on the woolie thinker bit, Matt. Gah, I could rip my own eyes out after reading some rather hasty posts made over the last year.

The funniest part being, of course, that in most of the recent bannination threads Haus has been one of the more conciliatory posters- not in a "putting up with idiots" way, but in a "let's not all rush for the torches and kindling JUST yet" way. I've seen him arguing AGAINST bans at least as often as for them, yet somehow he still has that rep.

Does Haus actually have a rep for swinging the Banhammer though? I would have thought it was less a rep for banhammer swinging and more a rep for being about when very stupid things are being posted, posting very smart things and thus brining the board average back up to acceptable levels again.
