Sadly I'm not of much use towards piecing together the show's cosmology, as Iggy's currently got all my DVDs. I could YouTube, I guess...

Bah. I haven't been able to download any episodes since I switched to wireless. I've got no problems connecting to the internet and downloading music but the Bleach site keeps telling me that I'm not connected. Has anyone else experienced this?

I go to Bleach7 and download each new episode as a torrent via BitLord. I've never had any problems with that. Alternatively I could get my DVDs back and you can borrow those, although I only have the DVDs up to episode 100 and you may want to skip the filler altogether.

Yeah, I got this from Bleach 7 for two full days before I could get onto the site at all. It said "could not connect, too many users," or something. Bleach Portal doesn't even have episode 114 up yet, and they usually have the new ones by late Thursday night. I have no idea what's going on there.

It looks to me like 114 has been up on BleachPortal since Wednesday night... They have been claiming that their servers are down, so I don't know about the direct download, but the torrent is definitely up. Bleach7 does seem to be down for me atm, though.

Just out of interest, and completely off-topic, I started using Zudeo as my torrent app recently after hearing that the BBC are hooking up with them to distribute programs, and I really like it. What does anyone else use?

uTorrent, for me. It's pretty bare-bones, which is perfect for the dusty old laptop I'm using.

I didn't realize Bleach Portal had torrents. I always use their direct download thingy. Now I know better, thank you!

No worries. Just asked for their return, shouldn't be long.

If anyone's still having download difficulties then you can always go straight to the source.

Over the last week I've been increasingly coming to believe that the main reason for a lot of the current machinations in the series is to get Matsumoto in the same room as Chizuru. Stop me if I'm wrong.

Interesting. Although most of 115 is taken up with characters getting clued in to things the audience already know, it's sandwiched between two major revelations (with a bit of info on the Menos heirarchy along the way). Firstly, they have twice as many Arrancar as they need for the battle (nice to see Aizen again).

Secondly, Rukia knows Ichigo's little secret, and although there's a possibility that she worked it out by herself (his inexplicable power level, plus Hana witnessing the mask... there have been enough clues for attentive Shinigami if they start comparing notes) I'm willing to bet that she found out via Byakuya. I had a notion that he might tell her at the end of last week's episode. Whatever his motives are we can't be sure. He may be intending to help Ichigo, he may be trying to drive a wedge between him and Rukia. The Vaizard and Shinigami are enemies, after all.

If that's what he's attempting I think it's a gross underestimation of Rukia. She's crafty, bloody minded and very loyal. While she makes an effort to live within the laws of Soul Society and be a good little sister ultimately that's just not her. She's too utilitarian, too individual. She'll break any number of rules to get the job done if she has to. I have a hunch that when Ichigo-as-Vaizard is revealed it will split Soul Society in their opinions, and that ultimately Ichigo's main source of allies will have to be his friends. However, I've been known to be very wrong before.

I almost feel like I should be resisting the urge to speculate on this show and just go with it. Most of the time it's better than my speculations anyway.

Most importantly, the exposition-via-Rukia-scribbling is back!

Yeh, I really think he's either i) dropped a ball on Rukia or ii) is banking in some way on her behaviour.

And the families: I can't remember the terms they used but yeh, in the slums groups seem to form that follow traditional age hierarchies, corresponding to the dead's "physical" age. Or at least, this is what Cockatiel's family seemed to be like: a model I cling to despite Captain Hitsugaya, and the fact that Rukia's crew were more Borrible then familial. (I think the last isn't a normal family, though)

Once inside the Lethality Stone, there are yet more selective families, such as the Kuchiki's, who Rukia is asked to join, in the position of Byakuya's sister. On top these overlapping loyalties are the squads, which doesn't see to correspond directly to faily ties (unfortunately, a further layer, of secret bodyguard corps and research groups etc appear to have been diluted in the Bound stuff to being plain squads, which I should have seen coming with 4th, but I didn't).

This doesn't explain who Rukia's identical sister is. And if I'm right and Rukia wasn't in a family outside, is this how she could enter a new one while in school on the in? Although really, I think we've been told Shinigami abandon many of their previous ties almost as a matter of taste, another think that marks Rukia out.

Yeh, I really think he's either i) dropped a ball on Rukia or ii) is banking in some way on her behaviour.

It's occurred to me that Urahara may have told Rukia, although I think it's much more interesting if it was Byakuya.

I'm finding it really interesting that we haven't seen Ichigo ask her how she knows. This is another one of those moments where Bleach seems to be choosing not to disclose something to us. Previous examples include us not being party to Ichigo attaining bankai, and Byakuya's seeming silence on the issue of Ichigo-as-Vaizard. Of course, two of these might be cleared up at once. He may already have asked her, and it may be dealt with via flashback. Hmmm…

Everyone's got secrets in this new story. Orihime is jealous of Rukia, and her powers aren't what they seem. Ishida is doing deals with Dad. Ishiin is keeping things from his son. Karin knows that Ichigo is keeping things from her. Tatsuki can see what's going on and knows that everyone's keeping her in the dark. Keigo has noticed that something is going on and that he's being left out, and now he's seeing things. Ichigo thinks only one person knows about him being a Vaizard, but so far he hasn't told anyone about being approached by Shinji. It's amazing, this storyline has been like a hundred and ten episodes of loose ends and fallout being addressed at once.

Something's gotta give.

Interesting speculation on familial bonds. Iggy still has my DVDs so I can't rewatch those episodes to join in the speculation. My memory ain't as good as the Pin Dude's. I'm thinking about having a rewatch soon because of the sheer amount of current payoff for things that have been set up earlier.

Because this isn't a point of anal continuity lore, can someone hook a brother up this vital piece of information:

Has somehting happened between Ichigo and Rukia to make them not really care about each other any more? Or something? I keep thinking there's a distance that explains his resignation to her knowing his half-Hollow state but I can't think why I'd assume this. They haven't seemed that close, and she's bullying him and berating his lack of knowledge like she sometimes used to.

Maybe it's just his general bullied demeanour and her sometime teaching style getting tangled up. Ichigo does seem to be rolling with punches and pulling his own right now.

I think it's actually the reverse situation, but I can understand why you might think otherwise. The writers responsible for the filler arc were much less accomplished at characterisation than Kubo and at their hands Rukia lost a lot of her nuances. She was reduced to simply being earnest and the occasional conflict between her and Ichigo reduced to Moonlighting style bickering.

What we're seeing here is tough love, and it's not something that Ichigo would accept from just anyone. Rukia knows Ichigo extremely well. She knows that he's not himself and that he'd dismiss or react badly to anyone trying to coddle him or look after him. So she deals with him by shouting at him and fighting him, because she ultimately she knows that's who he really is: a fighter and a protector. She can get through to him in a way that Orihime can't, and this is why Orihime is jealous of their relationship. The shouting and the kicking is actually something very intimate between them that they can't really admit directly to each other, and Ichigo's response, rather than resignation, is an acknowledgement of this without having to state it.

That he is so withdrawn around her afterwards when he apologises to Orihime is also less to do with resignation than it is about guilt. He's ashamed of himself. Ichigo can't openly admit that he needs Rukia because he's not the kind of person who displays weakness easily, so he acts affronted and annoyed at her when he knows deep down that Rukia is the only person holding him together right now. Rukia also can't admit openly how deep her feelings are for Ichigo and is embarrassed when Renji states that the reason she is on the assignment is because of her closeness to the old orange-haired lunk. She just can't have Ichigo know how much she loves him. Notice how disappointed she is that she can't sleep in his room any more.

I'm extremely glad to have Kubo's Rukia back. I am hopelessly smitten by her.

Well, it was "only D-Roy". That was another spine-tingling episode... it's been a while since we've been reminded how tough the 11th Division are.

I wanted to ask about something else - you may have noticed that the strong Spanish theme with the bad guys (Arrancar, Hierro, Menos Grande, Hueco Mundo, the Arrancar numbers are all spoken in spanish). And this theme runs all the way through the upcoming arcs. Actually, if you count Sado, it's not only the bad guys. Is there a particular thing going on here that I'm not aware of? Are they "exoticising" Spanish? (OK, last question a bit tongue-in-cheek...)

I'm trying to avoid spoilers so I'm just going to drop a quick note. I read the first page of the thread and decided it had been awhile since I'd really enjoyed some anime. I guess the dubbed Cowboy Bebop was the last one and that was a few years ago. So, I bought the first Bleach DVD and a stack of the manga as well.

Holy crap!

I quickly downloaded a torrent of episodes 1-108 and separate torrents of the most recent episodes. I'm up to episode 45 or so and the series just keeps getting better and better as it goes. I'm hooked. Hopefully I can catch up in the next couple of weeks.

Anyways, thanks to everyone in this thread for piquing my interest. Fun stuff.

Right, that's it. I'm done with Bleach fan communities. I love them, they do a lot of hard work and help introduce the shows to a lot of people, but this is the second time in the last few weeks that they've disclosed an episode's spoiler filled title ahead of airing the show. From now on I'm only downloading from Dattebayo's page, where you get all you need to know: Bleach 118.

Stunning episode, stunning fight. It was a really canny switch to take up Edorad's perspective on the fight. Although Ikkaku hasn't been a exactly a central character so far we've "known" him for a long time, and so suddenly observing him from the enemy's point of view makes him seem like an unknown quantity… and what an unknown quantity he turned out to be. He's suddenly ripped through the ranks to a particularly insane bankai, seemingly bypassing the lieutenant stage altogether, which in turn makes me wonder about Yachiru Kusajishi and what she's capable of, as we've only had hints of her speed and the force of her reiatsu. 11th Division rule.

Looks like we'll see more of them in two weeks too, including the return of Zaraki Kenpachi. No episode next week, which sucks ass but serves to crank up the tension. This show is a real bastard like that. Grimmjow horribly takes out Rukia in an episode focusing on Ikkaku vs Edorad, next week is a depressing barren Bleach-free wasteland, the week after is a flashback episode that seems from the trailer to be about fleshing out Ikkaku, which while being tremendously exciting makes it at least three fucking weeks until we find out what happens to Rukia! God. At least when I was watching the Soul Society Arc I could follow through with the next episode straight away.

My (tongue-in-cheek) prediction: Chappy will save the day. I love Chappy.

Poor old Keigo is getting a bit of a crash course in Shinigami/Arrancar can of ass-whoopery. If you were him would you let Ikkaku crash at your house after you've seen what a fucking nutter he is?

Re: the now heavy Spanish references in the show… I have no idea what they're aiming for here, but yes, it does seem to be a little like an exercise in exoticising. I wonder about Chad's tattoo on his left arm for example – "Amore e Morte," meaning love and death – which I believe is actually in Italian and makes me wonder whether a similar phenomenon is happening here to the frequent conflation of Chinese and Japanese cultures by Westerners, or whether Kubo knows exactly what he's doing. Difficult to say, as in one of the flashback episodes I seem to recall Ichigo being set up for the mockery of the audience for his ignorance of Mexican culture (not seen it in ages so might be remembering incorrectly). Despite the fact that not all Arrancar have Spanish-sounding names their music theme is certainly Spanish guitar.

On that note it's nice to have some new themes in the mix, although I miss If you want to see some action/got to be the centre of attraction. I mean, it was just so stupid…

I totally understand your frustration regarding the episode title spoilers (Although I accidentally caught the title of todays episode about a fortnight ago, and rather than dissapointment, I've been feeling nothing but regular bursts of excitement everytime anything vaguely Bleach related is mentioned. I cannot wait till I've finished this essay). Does the Dattebayo site do direct downloads? My university doesn't allow BitTorrent.

Apparently (According to wikipedia) "Arrancar" is a spanish verb, meaning "to rip off" or "remove".

Yeah, I think Dattebayo does direct downloads. There seems to be a complex etiquette that goes with it though, it's worth reading the site. I've never downloaded direct so I have no idea what it entails.

I just hit the slump with the Mod Souls games and the Bounts. It's really dragging. How long does this last before it picks up in quality again exactly? I'm on episode 70 right now. I'm hoping the reappearance of Rukia livens things up a little.

I think it's around episode eighty, eighty-fiveish when it gets better. To be honest, all the Bound arc is a drop in quality, bar three or four episodes throughout the run that are fantastic. You can pick up the series again at episode 110 without missing anything really, as they so far have only occasionally made reference to the filler story. 110-118 are so fucking kick-ass it's untrue.

... and I can breathe again. Bleach 119 felt like rain after a two week drought, and poses some very interesting questions. In terms of chronology, it seems Madarame Ikkaku had attained bankai before he encountered Ichigo on the Rukia rescue mission, which means that he was fighting considerably below his actual strength for the entire battle. It makes me wonder several things. Did he suss that Ichigo was a basically a good bloke and would let him live if he purposefully threw the fight? Did he deliberately lose in order that his bankai remain secret? And is his cover for his bankai based on twofold motives, wanting to only serve under Zaraki Kenpachi, even to the death and believing that his captain has only contempt for those who seek to build a relationship with their sword, with the reasoning that those who cannot fight alone are weak?

I'm not certain that Kenpachi really believes that any more, if he ever did. I got the impression that the only reason Ichigo could beat him was that he had found the one gap in the captain's defence: that he could never acknowledge his sword. Do we believe that Kenpachi can't fight with his zanpakuto because he always believed it to be about weakness and as such never respected it, or do we believe that he just couldn't work out how not to be lonely and all his bluster about weakness is more of a defence mechanism to cover for how much he's hurting? I'm increasingly starting to suspect the latter. Notice how his temper flares when Ichigo starts fighting with Zangetsu, and his later aside to his zanpakuto.

From what we've seen up to now it seems impossible to fight Zaraki Kenpachi if you're the slightest bit conflicted. Ikkaku fared well because he wasn't. He's basically a thug, but he knows exactly who he is and what he wants. He accepts himself. Ichigo began the battle with Kenpachi with all kinds of fear and doubt, and as it progressed he faced a lot of things in himself. His victory, as much as it was down to the Hollow mask's protection, was about the psychological ju-jitsu he unwittingly utilised, thus making Kenpachi the conflicted one. At least that's what I reckon, and I think there's enough in the text to support it.

What about Renji, though? It seems clear to me that he was out to surpass Byakuya, but the vulnerability he displays in this episode is surprising to say the least. He seems to have deliberately picked Ikkaku because his skills are mere rumour, and private training with him would be less likely to attract attention. But where is this all placed chronologically? It seems just after he was kicked out of Aizen's squad to begin with, perhaps with him becoming Byakuya's lieutenant along the way. It seems increasingly like every major decision he's made concerning being a Shinigami is based around the Kuchikis in some way, specifically Rukia. This is all getting nastily love-triangular.

I'm going to go back over the manga to doublecheck, but a lot of this episode was not in the comic. That's the most of Yachiru that I've seen outside the omake pages/footage, I think! Unfortunately readbleach.com is down, so I can't verify exactly which parts are new. I'm glad they're using the anime to fill in some gaps, though. And it will delay (the probably inevitable) future filler episodes.

Was it just me or did Kenpachi blow up his own shawl because he couldn't be bothered to wait for it to fall away?

That was brilliant. I was going to say I'd gladly wait two weeks if every episode was that good, but thats crap, if I have to wait two weeks again I will suicide.

I'm such a sucker, I honestly Ikkaku had bought it.

Seeing Renji vulnerable like that was.... disquieting.

Slightly dissapointed Ichinose didn't sneak an appearance in.

Did you get an answer on this? I agree that having the odd episode, or section of an episode here and there to flesh out the story and characters is a much more canny way of adding additional material than a whole fifty-plus episode arc. Still, once the episode has aired it would be nice to know what is from the comic and what isn't.

I was going to say I'd gladly wait two weeks if every episode was that good, but thats crap, if I have to wait two weeks again I will suicide.

Well, looks like we're waiting again:

Please take note that there will be no Bleach episode next week. Episode 121 will be airing on April 11th and is entitled, "Clash! The Protector vs. The Bearer." That episode will feature a new opening and ending theme. The title of the new opening song has not been announced yet, but it is by Aqua Timez, the group that did the Bleach movie theme. (No, the movie has not been released on DVD and therefore cannot be subbed, so don't ask) The new ending theme is "Tsumasaki" by Ore Ska Band.

So, any thoughts on Ururu's 'protection mode'? She always struck me as an odd one - but is she some sort of modified gigai?

I'm attempting to puzzle through what was comic adapted in this latest episode and what was added. It's clear that Ririn, Cloud and Nova's interference in Renji's battle with Ilfort was an addition, but I'm fairly certain that Ururu's violent dispassionate freakout was in the comic. This would account for why Renji's reaction to a tiny girl in pyjamas *doing-a-Shinji* and repeatedly mullering Ilfort's face with her fist was more of a stunned "What the fuck?" rather than feeling his Shinigami one-on-one fighting honour had been trampled. Not so with the Ririn, Cloud and Nova meddling, I would have expected him to register his indignation in no uncertain terms, and I think the writers dropped the ball on this. Renji has been the character to have suffered the most at the hands of poor writing in any additional material isn't he? Everyone seems to love him, very few people know how to handle him.

But yeah, that sequence simultaneously kicked ass and was fairly disturbing. I've been getting some icky Ayanami vibes from that "girl" for a while.

And Limit Release? 2007's Bankai?

It was my speculation that this might be a reiatsu limiter to avoid too much real world property damage. Yumichika has made reference to the Karakura Town repairs coming out of Soul Society's budget, wondered if that had something to do with it. But that theory doesn't seem to gel with the various Shinigami Division crests appearing on Hitsugaya, Renji and Matsumoto's respective chests, in that certainly seems to indicate the addition of reiatsu rather than its removal (one would expect the seal to disappear if limiters were removed).

There's no way that Ichigo can beat Grimmjow without facing up against his inner Hollow, is there?

Characters we haven't seen in a suspiciously long time: Ishida, Shinji, Hiyori, Isshin, Tatsuki, Don Kanonji.

Did you get an answer on this?

Manga #206 covers that episode. In fact it only features the very end of Ikkaku's battle, and flashbacks to the very end of his fight with Zaraki Kenpachi, and to the conversation where Renji asks him to step up as Captain. I have a niggling feeling that they might be taking material from more remote episodes, but Readbleach appears to have disappeared, and Bleachportal is very slow for me.

As for 120, that whole scene with the three stooges was just slotted in, and I thought was a little superfluous. The Ururu scene was in the manga (207), and the term 'kill mode' (not 'protection'), is used. The scene with her getting out of bed is extra, but the rest is almost verbatim. It's quite a shocking scene, more so in the manga with plenty of blood, foul language, what seems like a lot more power to Ururu's punches, and then she is very explicitly run through by Del Toro. Back on the Spanish themes, I thought the spanish guitar music when they released their zanpakuto was a little cheesey.

Poor Renji, I think he's in a difficult position as a character. His battle with Ichigo in the Soul Society arc was epic at the time, but is fairly tame by today's escalated standards, and yet he doesn't have any obvious direction to develop in. We will be seeing plenty of him in future, though.

Ishida, Shinji, Hiyori, Isshin, Tatsuki, Don Kanonji

You'll be seeing most of those pretty soon. Some a lot more than others. And there's a host of new characters in the wings as well!
