There's clearly some serious history between Isshin and Uruhara. I'm interested to see why Isshin would blame Uruhara for his skills and reiatsu diminishing. Again, too soon for more than wild speculation.

Seems that Isshin knew that Grand Fisher killed his wife, and brings up an interesting point: Why couldn't he save her? He's clearly a shinigami of the highest order. Isshin's character development is my favorite part of the show at the moment.

The new Vaizard isn't alive but the old one with the ridiculous pageboy is, apparently? Is that poor translation or something that will come clear in the future? Also, the thing about being a virgin bride, was that a throwaway gag or something important? Interesting, but I don't find either character compelling, yet. We did find out that the Vaizard are not affiliated with the Arrancar, but Aizen is. It seems to me that we have three defined factions in this arc: Shinigami, Vaizard and Hollow/Arrancar/Aizen and friends.

I don't, however have a clear picture of what they're fighting over. Isshin and Uruhara discussed how the H/A/AaF faction plans to kill everyothing and take over the world, but is it really that simple? The various motives have not come clear to me.

New Captain's council. Promotions, perhaps? I'll be happy to see more of the Soul Society characters. I'd like to see some of them a little more fleshed out, especially the little white-haired dude. I like him. And more Zaraki Kenpachi is a must.

Finally, Ishida accepts his father's offer. I'll be interested to seee how this plays out. He clearly can't hold to that promise forever, or he won't be in the action much. Maybe his old man will get offed, freeing him from his promise. Ishida seems like too uptight and hidebound to break it under anything but the most extreme circumstances, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think you might be reading too much into one or two scenes. I do think sometimes the subs give slightly the wrong impression - not from poor english, but from too literal a translation from japanese.

I saw this as just a casual conversation about how it been ages since Isshin has used his powers.

What part was this in, I don't remember it - I might watch it again.

Also, the thing about being a virgin bride, was that a throwaway gag or something important?
It was a throwaway gag, because they were both poking each other in the crotch, similar to the Hidden Leaf Secret: Taijutsu Supreme Technique: Thousand Years of Death from Naruto. Apparently, Kancho is common kids horseplay in the far east (you learn something new every day...).

Grand Fisher fucked in one swing! Jesus, that was unexpected.

It seems to me that we have three defined factions in this arc: Shinigami, Vaizard and Hollow/Arrancar/Aizen and friends.

Don't forget the Quincy, of whom there are now two (that we know of). They're small but they have their own agenda and won't easily ally themselves with the Shinigami, although I'm willing to lay money that Ishida won't be daddy's bitchboy for long.

And don't forget the humans. Chad, Orihime and seemingly now also Tatsuki. I'll wager that these guys will side with Ichigo no matter what, but as we're still not sure what he's going to do in this situation then that's all up for grabs.

It's getting properly interesting. You can't trust any of the supposed factions to stick together, everyone has their own motives.

Already loving Hiyori. Suspicious about the amount of screen time Keigo is getting, and about how many of his lines are constantly about feeling left out...

Wonder which Shinigami are getting assigned to Karakura Town... that was the gist of the next episode sequence, right? Given that they misdirect you a lot with the closing and opening themes I don't necessarily think it'll be Hitsugaya, Matsumoto, Renji, Ikkaku and Yumichika.

Yeah! I was expecting a protracted battle but, y'know, Isshin rules.

Don't forget the Quincy, of whom there are now two (that we know of). They're small but they have their own agenda and won't easily ally themselves with the Shinigami, although I'm willing to lay money that Ishida won't be daddy's bitchboy for long.

What are the odds on Ishida's dad being actually evil as opposed to just a dick? I'd say 40%. He's clearly been disingenuous with Ishida since the get-go, claiming that he hated the Quincy and wanted nothing to do with them when he is clearly a fully-trained, powerful Quincy. I'm afraid this might turn out positively Faustian for poor Ishida. That boy's had a bit of a raw deal, really.

Incidentally, could someone refresh me on the fundamental difference between how the Shinigami and Quincy fight Hollows? I know there is one, but I fear Google and Wikipedia because they teem with spoilers!

And don't forget the humans. Chad, Orihime and seemingly now also Tatsuki. I'll wager that these guys will side with Ichigo no matter what, but as we're still not sure what he's going to do in this situation then that's all up for grabs.

Correct, but they're kind of irrelevant, aren't they? Their spiritual powers seemed to top out at less than Lieutenant level, IIRC. Then again, I didn't watch the Bound arc, so who knows? Ichigo has been acting like kind of a dick recently, though, hasn't he? I wonder if the Hollow in him is starting to affect how he acts.

And Tatsuki is a mystery. How is it that she can see spiritual presences when she definitively did not before? Did someone tamper with her? If so, why? She's such a minor character. The character she's most associated with, Inoue, is also minor in the grand scheme of things (although she is a major character in the storyline proper). If she had dormant spiritual powers, why didn't hers awaken at the same time Chad and Inoue's did? Come to think of it, I can't actually remember how they got their powers and spiritual awareness. Did they appear at the same time? Inoue's power manifests itself through the hairpins her brother gave her, but the hairpins aren't the actual source, correct? Hmm.

Suspicious about the amount of screen time Keigo is getting, and about how many of his lines are constantly about feeling left out...

Yeah, he sort of came out of left field, right? I wonder if he will join Tatsuki in actually becoming relevant, if not developing spiritual powers.

I don't necessarily think it'll be Hitsugaya, Matsumoto, Renji, Ikkaku and Yumichika.

Seems like a fuck ton of firepower, doesn't it? A Captain, two Lieutenants (Renji being Captain-level, if on the low side) and two guys who are Lieutenant-level or damn near due to their being in Zaraki Kenpachi's hardass 11th Division.

IIRC the Quincy actually "kill" Hollows somehow, rather than banishing back to... um Hueco Mundo, was it? And this is why the Shinigami don't like them - they upset the balance of sould somehow. Revealed around the time that Ishida came out?? I'll have to go back and watch everything again, I think.

Same with the reason that so many friends of Ichigo's have spiritual powers. I think that was answered around the time that Chad and Inoue got their powers, but I'll have to make sure in case I'm spoilering.

Hee hee, I can barely wait for each episode to come out! (even though I know what's coming...)

No, I think you're right on both counts. It sounds correct to me, and I haven't read the manga. I've managed to get my partner to start watching it, so I'll rewatch the relevant episodes. I'm almost positive you're right about the Quincy. they destroy Hollows, whereas the Shinigami redeem them. No wonder they hate each other. I really want to see Chad and Inoue's origins again though, to relate it to Tatsuki.

The difference between Shinigami and Quincy is that the former are psychopomps and can perform the soul burial. Most Hollows get redeemed unless they were vile fuckers in life. The Quincy just kill 'em.

Ichigo's friends started getting powers because of Ichigo. The amount of reiatsu he had unconsciously was off the scale and it leaked into the people closest to him. It may also be that once the powers are active they aren't linked to Ichigo, as when Byakuya and Renji arrested Rukia they effectively destroyed Rukia's reiatsu that had trasferred to Ichigo, and Chad and Orihime were still able to train. Although he already had his own Shinigami nature that hadn't become manifest yet, so maybe their abilities are linked to that instead.

I can't see any reason why this process of powering up your friends can't continue with others. Ichigo came back from Soul Society hella more powerful than when he went, after all.

Bloody hell. It's all gone apeshit.

An untold number dead around Karakura Town (or with their souls sucked out, might be temporary, dunno), Karin has known about Ichigo being a Shinigami for God knows how long, the Arrancar arrive in force (and we're told that there are three, or approximately three, people with sufficient spirit power to act as a threat - reckon that'd be Ichigo, Shinji and Hiyori) and there's some lovely Orihime foreshadowing.

Poor Chad.

Looks like next week the ass kicking will commence.

They really aren't wasting any time making the Arrancar seem a major threat. I really hope they keep this crazy pace up. I'm rewatching the Bount arc with my partner, and in parts it's interminably slow.

What about Uruhara and Isshin? We have yet to plumb the depths of either of those guys, but I would bet they're both uber-powerful.

Another thought about those two came to me while I was watching today. They're both former Shinigami, right? And Shinigami are spiritual entities, right? Does that mean that they're in Gigai? Or did they somehow become human? And how the heck did Isshin father three wonderful children if he's a spiritual entity? I hope this is explained.

there's some lovely Orihime foreshadowing.

About how her powers aren't really healing, but space/time manipulation? She may turn out to be more powerful than we ever realized, although she didn't have much luck against the new Arrancar. I wonder if Tsubaki will be able to reconstitute himself, the poor little guy.

From the preview for next week, I gather that Ichigo is going to get a bit of a kicking. Dad to the rescue? Perhaps the Vizard? The Soul Society reinforcements (Maybe the stacked lineup of Shinigami we talked about isn't too much firepower, after all- these Arrancar guys are tough!)? Or will Hollow Ichigo make an appearance?

This show is fucking rad.

Oh, I reckon both are extraordinarily powerful. As is Yoruichi. We know that Urahara and Yoruichi have attained bankai and are both Captain class, and I think probably Isshin is just as powerful.

But the Arrancar specifically mentioned the number three, and taking all those into account plus the Vaizard we've met plus Ichigo we're looking at six. If anyone could stand up to the Arrancar then the only incentive for Ichigo to learn from the Vaizard would be to hold his sanity together. I don't think it's off-base speculation that Ichigo is going to be at least making an attempt at getting to grips with his Vaizard nature in this arc. He's shit at making choices to look after himself, hence his current paralysis and moodiness. As soon as he realises that he needs to learn to protect everyone I reckon the big old idiot will throw himself into training.

So generally I'm thinking that it takes a Vaizard to properly fight an Arrancar, hence my speculation that the three that the dude mentioned are the Vaizard we've met so far.

I wonder if Tsubaki will be able to reconstitute himself, the poor little guy.

I know, it's horrible isn't it? Every time Orihime fights and something happens to the Shun Shun Rikka I get really worried about them and need them to be OK before I can do things like eat and sleep.

That makes so much sense. I've been thinking "who's the most powerful" all evening in relation to that little quote, but that settles it all into place.

Mind you, I'd come to the conclusion that Isshin and Urahara were more powerful than Ichigo and the two Vaizard. They just have the air of somebody who fucks up the baddest of the bad guys before breakfast. I may just be babbling here, but they seem like they've moved beyond all the posturing of the other Shinigami and into a realm of Zen Badassery. Witness how cool and collected Isshin was when confronting the Hollow that killed his wife. And Urahara always seems to be ten steps in front of everyone else. They've moved past even being a Captain-Class Shinigami into being Forces To Be Reckoned With.

Every time Orihime fights and something happens to the Shun Shun Rikka I get really worried about them and need them to be OK before I can do things like eat and sleep.

You, too!? Tsubaki always seems to get the shitty end of the stick. I'm really wondering about Inoue's powers after this episode. It's already been established that the Shun Shun Rikka are aspects of her, so do you think that they might be destroyed, only to have her manifest the power they represent in a more efficient way? We saw in this episode that her current strength can't touch the Arrancar, so maybe she's due for an overhaul. Time/space powers means the sky's the limit.

I'd like to ask a question about the different worlds. In my view so far it seems that Soul Society is by no means a "heaven" (witness Rukia's childhood in the slums). So the impression I have is that Soul Society is like an extra, intermediate "world" positioned inbetween Earth and Heaven... and to some extent managing the balance of the flow of souls between those places.

It's not important, and not completely apparent/relevant from/to the storyline, but i just wanted to know if anyone else had thought about it?

Jake, Colossus of Clout
23:25 / 06.02.07
The exact specifications of the cosmology do seem a bit poorly defined at this point.

I'd always sort of figured the idea was "Heaven ain't all it's cracked up to be," but then what happens when a soul in Soul Society dies? Renji and Rukia clearly buried their three best friends, and Shinigami can be killed, so where do they go, if anywhere? And where do they come from, anyway? Is everyone in Soul Society the soul of a deceased human? Were Renji and Rukia kids who got killed, and then they aged in Soul Society? Or can souls reproduce?

Hollow can apparently reconsitute themselves (Grand Fisher) or be cleansed by a Shinigami (Inoue's brother). What does that mean? Does a Hollow "ride" a human soul? Is there a transformed human soul in Grand Fisher? If so, why wasn't he cleansed when Ichigo killed him? Are there two distinct kinds of Hollow, those that are transformed human souls and those that are all-Hollow?

And what's the deal with Isshin and Urahara "retiring" to Karakura town? I thought Shinigami were spiritual entities. Are they in Gigai? If so, how did Isshin father children? If not, how did Isshin father children? Even if it's possible for souls to make little soul babies, Ichigo and his sisters seem to be human. Did Isshin somehow become human upon retirement?

So, ah, yeah, I have no idea, but I think about this shit. A lot.

eeeeeeeeeeeeee!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

That was totally fucking awesome. Ichigo is losing it, but his impossibly bad-ass, "You're the one who did that to Chad's right arm, right?" was just vicious. Orihime has noticed something is very wrong with him, even seems a little afraid of him now.

Yoruichi and Urahara! Yoruichi and Urahara! Yoruichi and Urahara!

So at least Yami has "steel" skin so charged with reiatsu that you'll get hurt even by touching him. No telling whether Ulquiorra also has this ability (that's one thing I like about this thread, by the way: the way in which you have to learn a character's name in order to post about them). An ability like Yoruichi's Shunkou may defend against it, but very few Shinigami have equivalents. While you could see the fight in this episode as some kind of early pyrrhic victory it's worth noting that these two have injured a huge number of people without even drawing their zanpakutos.

Ichigo's really racking up the torment. He can't go on like this, something's got to give. So far only Byakuya and Koga have witnessed his inner Hollow in full effect, as in the fight with Kariya Jin it was generous enough to just yellow his eyes a little. While Koga's silence is easily understood (he probably didn't understand what he was seeing and everyone thinks he's dead), Byakuya's is slightly troubling. He must have recognised the Hollow mask and the change in reiatsu even if he didn't understand that they were an indication that Ichigo is a Vaizard. Unsettling that a character with so many hidden motives and such antipathy for our hero is operating on an inexplicable need to know basis.

But most importantly:

Hitsugaya!

Matsumoto!

Renji!

Ikkaku!

Yumichika!

Rukia!

SCHOOL UNIFORMS!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

"Been a while hasn't it Ichigo?" No it hasn't. But welcome back anyway, because I'm in love with you.

I just assumed it was the product of some weird Arrancar attack, but I might be wrong. I can't imagine they're censoring blood when Ichigo lopped someone's arm off in the same episode. All Yumi's attacks seemed Kido or Arrancar based, or using his fists.

Loped off his arm, yes, but there wasn't any blood.

Also, death in Soul Society; I always thought Soul particles were, you know, soul particles.

And has he Ban kai'd, in canon, on earth before? I can't remember if he just Hollow'd on the Bound. But then I guess he wouldn't be bound / would really care if he was bound by Shinigami etiquette about unleashing, italics at the end of every sentence.

Took me forever to get this episode off Bleach 7, I couldn't even get onto the site for two days.

Great episode. Great arc so far, really. So much happens in every episode, but it doesn't feel rushed at all.

Ichigo's pretty much going to have to ask the Vaizard to help him, right? Not only will he get control of (or come to terms with) his Hollow side, but he'll probably also have access to an array of cool new powers.

I guess the teasers a couple episodes back were right on who was coming from Soul Society to help out. It's a good group, I've been looking forward to more Hitsugaya and Matsumoto, and the thuggish Ikkaku and his foil, Yumichika make for good comedy. Rukia and Renji have to be there as important characters, Ichigo's everything and the only guy as dumb as he is. I'm thrilled. The more characters, the better, as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure we'll see everybody eventually. There are still some questions from the Soul Society arc that need answering, like Ukitake's illness.

The Arrancar were suitably impressive, although I'm sure they're not the toughest of their breed. I wonder if Aizen will be all Hollowfied when next we see him?

Seth, I'm curious about Byakuya and Hollow Ichigo, too. Byakuya doesn't seem like the type to go spreading anybody's dark secrets around, though, whether he likes them or not. That's far too crass for him. He could already know about them, and be biding his time. Or, /wildtheory he could be one, himself. The design of his headdress is reminescent of a Hollow mask. /wildtheory

Ooh, nice theory. He did tell Ichigo to back to the real world because he didnt belong in Soul Society. Hard to tell how much of that was to wrap up the Bound arc tho.

Is everyone in Soul Society the soul of a deceased human? Were Renji and Rukia kids who got killed, and then they aged in Soul Society? Or can souls reproduce?

I'd got the impression that yes everyone was once a dead human and everyone aged but that Shinigami were able to slow/halt that process.

Renji and Rukia's backstory talked of them creating their own family from the kids of similar age in the slums because nobody had a family. Hitsuygaya had a similar childhood it seems. Upon arrival in Rukongai Chad met the boy whose soul had been trapped in the cockatiel in the real world. The kid definitely remembered Chad didnt he? Need to dig that episode out again, there may have been some exposition that helped.
